One of my aspirations for this project is to create an essential guide to Waterdeep, covering each ward in extreme detail. Which ward would you like to see me do next?
Please consider supporting my work by becoming a Protector of the Realms. This community is what allows me to continue working on the Realms every day and allows me to continue creating new stories for you and your games: patreon.com/EdGreenwood
Not a ward but would love some Yawning Portal lore.
Dock Ward!
Walking Statues!
Blackstaff Tower (or maybe Trades Ward). Overall, I think we all would love a nice Waterdeep guide, not only the wards, but different famous (and maybe some not so well known) locations, sights, people and customs, too.
I'm excited for this series! I will be running Waterdeep: Dragon Heist for the first time soon, and I don't have nearly the experience with Forgotton Realms as a few of my players do.
Whenever you hesitate on pronouncing names, I like to imagine you aren’t struggling with pronunciation but are, instead, a storied wizard pausing to reflect on some secret personal history with the characters themselves. What remains unspoken even amongst such outrageous people might very well give even Elminster pause. 😂
Love Waterdeep! I wished for a detail official guide to the City of Splendor for a long time. Now the creator of the setting is getting me one! 🤯🤯🤯 Thanks
A big chunk of the water deep dragon heist book is a guide to the city.
@yesmilord2350 Yeah I know, I have that adventure 😌 but it focus on the "here and now" (Volo write it for the adventures in the 1492 DR) and most of the history is not explained. One example is - and I really want a video about it - the origin of the Walking Statues of Waterdeep: we really know very little about them, and it's fascinating when you are the player, cause it add mystery. But as a GM, I'm very curious about the truth about them. I can always improvise, but I would also know how the writer of the Sword Coast imagined it
In older editions there are half a dozen of rulebooks focused on Waterdeep in detail
@@ritckar1434 any suggentions?
Volos Guide To Waterdeep is a second edition book my gf got me to add flavor to waterdeep. Made by the man you're watchin. Absolutely a good pick up
I don't know if you'll read this Ed but I hope it finds your attention. You sir, are an icon of modern fantasy. In my eyes rivaled by few, and easily on par with Tolkien and other classic world builders. Your great work has inspired much of my life, even before I was introduced properly to dungeon and dragons. There are very few IP's that have captured my attention enough to want to learn the histories and mysteries of it's lore, and fewer still that I know as much about. I thank you for your passion in creating, and dedication to sharing, this beautiful universe. You have enriched my life and made my world a more beautiful place to live. Your legacy is grand and well deserved sir. May it outlive us all.
Thank you! Yes, may it outlive us all! I still work on the Realms every day!
Who is this handsome wizard? OMG it’s Ed Greenwood!
Finally - Waterdeep videos 🤍
These longer videos are awesome. Can't fall asleep to 8 minute vids.
The Loremaster position is still safe in your hands. I am reminded of the Aural history told around the fire to prepare the listeners for the future with wisdom of the past.
Thank You Good Sir.
Finally!!! I love Waterdeep!
Awesome I can’t get enough of this!
Been a realmsman now for 30+ years but only found this channel recently.
I think I must’ve read volos guide to water deep 1000 times 😂
Keep up the amazing work Sir Ed of the Greenwood
Uluvathae!
Haha, _yes!_ I was hoping for a reference video/series to Waterdeep!
Ed is an ABSOLUTE treasure. Love me some Edlore for Waterdeep.
This was amazing. I would love hear more about the Sword Mountains!
As someone who has played Dungeons and Dragons since '87, and have been in love with the Forgotten Realms for almost as long, I'm so glad that Dungeon Dad pointed out that you have a youtube channel, and sent me over here
Excellent!
I love this channel, I always appreciate a little Realms Lore
More of this please 🙏 waterdeep is awesome
More lore! I love this!
Thanks Ed. I always enjoy the fine yarns you spin!
I love how the editing is getting increasingly unhinged! :D
Amazing work as always Ed, love you
Always loved Waterdeep, my players visit it every time they need a shopping trip, visit a tavern, or meet their Patron
Another golden video from Ed!
Amazing!! Next time it would be nice to cover the Dock Ward!!
That was fun, thank you so much!
Been playing a campaign starting in and around waterdeep for a couple years now ❤ love this place like it's my own
Love the Lost Skeleton reference! Great Movie
Very well timed vid for me! Next game my players will be attending a ball at Lady Jalanvalos's manor on the evening of the Dragonsdown festival 😁
So many deep and interesting tidbits, I love it!! It would be awesome to get more videos about the other wards in the city
How the heck did I just find out about Mr. Greenwood?? My nerd friends have failed me! Subscribed!
I wish Volo's guide to Waterdeep had a sequil. It's the best Rpg supplement ever created.
I never expected to see you on youtube. Seeing your name here and there over the years has made you an inspiration of mine. Its like listening to a celebrity lol. Thank you sir
This was really cool! I'm looking forward to the next one
I'm so glad I stumbled across you I'm working on a 3.5 game where the party starts basing in Waterdeep.
Ed is a master Storyteller. I cant wait to see him again, hope to at Gary Con
YESSSS! Thank you so much! I can't wait to absorb every tiny detail for our current campaign! So exciting 🤩
Not a ward strictly, But i'd love to see more on Mistshore, and the Docks Ward. We've been playing a very modified WDH for about a year, and my players just LOVE living in the city. I dig deep for details and getting them straight from the source is just wonderful.
It’s like stumbling on a long lost secret this channel will blow up ⬆️
Love the architecture details here, really brings the world to life
This is the kind of write up that I used when I posted this video on a Neverwinter Nights Extended Edition server:
"Watching this video, alongside others, I find myself conflicted in how I should feel about Ed Greendwood in general. As stated previously, I'm of the opinion that any place is just the way you need it to be - as a DM - to serve your setting and story. Yet, especially when it comes to persistent worlds a common denominator is important to keep the setting consistent.
I really like how in his videos Greenwood combines broad themes of the the areas he describes with very specific and narrow plot points that players might come across as long as the DM is capable and mindful to drop the right hints.
Maybe it's my own bias, my disregard for overarching story arcs in general, that makes me ignore part of Greenwoods thought process here, because I rather have my own, more dynamic process happening instead. Yet I can't argue against the intricate ideas that he brings up in these videos (referring to the books he wrote or at least took part in) that flesh out the setting in various ways."
The server is in closed beta phase currently but aims to offer a persistent world with a focus on Waterdeep and Skullport in Neverwinter Nights Extended Edition. Hope I'll be able to post anything more official about it at some point!
Ed, I recently found a copy of your Silver Marches campaign setting in a used bookstore and I find it superior to modern publications on the setting.
I’m sure you’re under certain restrictions, but please continue to do all you can in documenting the lore for this game we all love so much!
Awesome video! Love the unique oddities and characters in the North Ward! I'm definitely want to have my players encounter the clutching skeleton!
I love the Waterdeep content. Is there any information on the gnomes of Faerun in other videos?
I'll get to gnomes, I promise!
DUDE! this is what we want to see!
I’d like to see your world. All of it in one fat box set. Maps. Everything. I am blown away by what you have released over the years.
The Silent Nine sound awesome.
i wish you were my grandpa, and tell stories of toril before bedtime with my other siblings and cousins
Would love to hear more on the Temples of Waterdeep! Both the official big ones, and the makeshift shrines to evil gods hidden from view O_O
I hoped you would give more information about Dancing Haven? Looking forward to your Castle Ward video.
I'm not doing "a video a ward," I'm poking around Waterdeep when I can snatch the time to do so, so there's still hope for Dancing Haven...
Do you think you could talk about Chessenta? It's one of the more interesting old empires but it's hard to find up to date info about it
Damn impressive
He has the perfect voice and the perfect look for fantasy story telling 💕
I kinda had a backstory of my Half Drow Bard (a child of a Human Noble and Eilistraee Priestess, former being more of a “new money” and latter who also operate Halfway House for Drow escapees to adjust to non-Lolth life) who came from there before getting into Waterdeep Dragonheist Shenanigans. I kinda had fun with her since she is basically mascot/negotiator/“part time legal attorney” on the group along with getting monetary support from her Drow mom for the Tavern…also maybe serving Prairie Oyster to customers with hangover.
Hey, Ed, havent seen you since Paul closed the bookshop. I am one of the people who took the occasional shit kicking for playing AD&D in the 80's. Sure am glad my efforts were not in vain. Seeing as the company held the line and didnt let outside forces control their product... Oh, wait.
Ed needs to do just a bunch of Forgotten Realms lore videos. Who else could be better to listen to on the topic?
This is awesome, is only WotC could give us such resources... Running Dungeon of the Mad Mage at the moment.
A masterful commentary on his creation.
Getting to hear about Waterdeep from the creator himself is a treat. I've just completed Watedeep: Dragon Heist and it has to be my favorite pre-written adventure I've ever played.
Perfect timing as I am really getting into Waterdeep campaigns now
Ed sir! You are a gem.
I'm so glad Trollskull gets some coverage. It'a become kind of an important locale in our Isekai Realms game XD
Which, by the way, thank you for that ;)
Waterdeep is the best and most interesting city in ALL of swords and sorcery. Mister Greenwood beat them all moorcock lieber all of them. Excellent video thank you and have a good day😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊.
I have a feeling that Dorlen Spikeshield was actually one of the Silent Nine with a humanoid alter ego form of Barok Clanghammer, and that the gemstones found in his sculptures were actually his distributed Dragon's horde.
Maybe his disappearance coincides with Dagult Neverember's employ of Aurinax to guard the embezzled gold horde in the Vault of Dragons, do he was hoping to keep his personal horde safe by distributing it throughout Waterdeep, hidden in his stone sculptures.
One thing that wouldn't quite fit would be why he would need the Dragonstaff of Ahghairon if he already had a draconic ward pass token, but maybe the staff is more powerful than the tokens.
The Dungeon Dad says hi!
My current campaign is in the Feywild and the players eager to return to Waterdeep to check in on the businesses they have in Dock Ward. Things must be right for when Mirt inevitably arrives for a stout and Volo attempts to sell books and increase his tab. Such stories in the Ultimate Guide to Waterdeep are swapped but the sailor patrons tell none more than the deep water legends of mermaids, ghosts, and even a treasure horde of the Bitch Queen herself!
Maybe one day Elminster will set the story straight in our very tavern by the docks.
Ed Greenwood looks EXACTLY how I imagine him
Does anyone in Waterdeep or other cities use continual light in their common rooms?
A few, but driftglobes (glowing globes) are preferred because their intensity and hue cab be adjusted and they can be netted and towed elsewhere (i.e. into a darker room when you want to repaint it).
Thanks Ed. Very cool !!!
I like smoking that Shire Kush & listening to this guys lore, I’m about to embark on my First Baldur’s gate play-through & I’ve been working on a backstory for my character
Thank you for the details. 1st and 2nd story field stone, upper floors Tudor style. I'm surprised that the fill is still "wattle and daub", aka clay, lime, and dung. But hey, its easy and super cheap. Roof cisterns, internal W/C or "jakes". Servants sleep in the kitchen and maybe one at the entryway (the traditional porter, an elderly servant, usually a retirement position, often deaf if the owner is not the social sort). Two sets of shutters, one exterior and one interior? Now that's a detail that rogues are going to have to deal with. How most North Warders are not very close socially-wise with the immediate neighbors. That sort of detail helps paint the scene in my head, and by narration, into my player's heads.
Im liable to have to call on the laughing wyrm later in my campaign so keep the waterdeep lore coming it will help when we visit the softclaws lol
It's so nice to be taught D&D lore by a real life wizard!
Your awesome and awesome video be safe out there big fan of dnd
Do the Silent Nine know any of the Lords of Waterdeep?
Hi Ed. Could you please explain what a "dredge-screen" is? 16:50 Thanks for the vid.
how these dragons have been able to enter and stay in Waterdeep with the dragonward being active ?
Hey Ed, is this the only video on this on UA-cam? I am running a Waterdeep campaign using a magically developing Guildhall(Bastion mechanic + guild reputation) and am looking for more to use
In my homebrew town/small city of Othrond -o Goldarn Glenn- with population of 80,000 that created for Adnd2e. For players that just want to have humble beginnings together before becoming adventurers. I had a great wrym gold dragon (for the life of me I can’t remember its name anymore) that founded the place after witnessing a human stage play drama. While in human form it was captivated by actors skills. a”After learning everything that dragon could from the actors. The dragon with its almost unlimited sized horde decided to build the ultimate stage for it to play multiple roles over time and switch the characters out every 50 to 60 years. For the naming of the town I tried to an elvish anagram of gold dragon. How did I do? I was 10 at the time so I never checked on the correctness lol
@edgreenwoodofficial I keep thinking about Larloch. I feel like this guy could be a major shaker. Surely he has the power and smarts to take Baldur's Gate at least. Is there going to be a time where Orcus comes to collect?
I just like liches.
I wonder what Ed Greenwoods thoughts on Tharizdun are, if any?
Great video! I am waiting for the day when Ed gives a character a boring name such as Sam Smith.
Do Mistshore!!!
19:14 Manspider is interesting. 😊
"I spat out his boots" 😂
Man, when is Waterdeep getting it's own game? This is undeniably the largest city on the Sword Coast and yet the only city of the big three (Neverwinter and Baldur's Gate being the other two) that we haven't got to explore in a video game.
Yah, it's called Dungeons and Dragons 😂😂
do silverymoon
Master Greenwood, I know that the subject I'm about to ask you has nothing to do with your video here, but I couldn't find any references to my doubt. Were there any wizards among the ranks of the Hellriders? Or better yet, was there any magic school or stronghold of magic in the kingdom of Elturgard or even in the sacred city of Elturel?
I have a player who will be playing as a wizard, and he mentions in his backstory that he was trained by wizards from the High Sorcery of Elturel, so I'm looking for any reference from you to enrich this story. Would the master of masters have any solution for me in this case?
I appreciate your help in advance.
Your humble pupil:
-Theophilus Alphonsus Sampaio, Master of Archaeology at Candlekeep. For the more intimate: Phipho.
As I understand, Waterdeep is one of the biggest city in the whole world setting. Yet for us players here in the real world, It's not that big. However, the realms is such a war torn and destabilized place. The only big cities that can exist is condensed inside protected city walls. Mr. Greenwood, is it fair to say besides the unprotected tent city slums outside of Waterdeep's walls, there isn't much in the way of buildings outside of the walled section of Waterdeep (other than farms)?
Is the original Untheric pantheon still worshipped in Unther and if not, are they still alive and worshipped on other worlds?
ED WATCH OUT!!! There's a skeleton behind you!!
Dont forget to SUBSCRIBE!
Ed would it be possible to chat with you about my background and up bringing near the dockward of waterdeep.
Thank you

Wizard of Waterdeep
Is Haldrin Methland involved in the drug business?
DnD is over... It's finished... The Luminous being above AO is dead, the Universe's run there meaningless clock out till Oblivion.
Where is all the intermixed video clips come from? They're bizarre

The annoying zoomer is gone. Praise Lathande!
Forgettable Realms: The least interesting setting, imaginable.
I play BECMI, out of The Rules Cyclopedia. Many reasons why.
I don't ask for "Character Concepts" Start with every Player (depending on group size average of 5) who wants to play a Character... To start from the same; Thorpe, Hamlet, Manor, or Village. Provide a description of 3 other families, (as well as their own), whom theirs knows, an ally, a neutral or competing family, and one in opposition to the Character's self-interest. That's 30 households of families, 90 to 120 individuals altogether. With established inter- relationships, share that before session zero, so the Players can draw their own conclusions as to what that would mean. Then make Characters together, they've known each other as Characters all their lives Make your own world, start locally, a few Knights on Mamorial estates, dividing up among them the following settlements. A lot of Homesteasds, a scattering of half a dozen Thorpes, a few Hamlets, a central village alongside each Manor, and a distant, unappealing City, with a Baron.
