At 17 he was hired as an office assistant at Timely Comics that would later evolve into Marvel Comics. At first he had the most mundane job. He would fill the inkwells, go down and buy lunch for everyone, erase pages and proofread. But He soon became an interim editor for the company.
And slowly Stan began building a universe of characters that everybody loved, including the Fantastic Four, Thor, Iron Man, the Hulk, the X-Men, and many more.
But one time he almost quit.
His publisher asked Stan to come up with a new superhero.
And he started thinking..
One day he saw a fly on the wall and though what an amazing thing it would be if this superhero could stick to walls and crawl on them. So spider man was born. But He wanted to do something different with this character. He gave him personal problems and made him a teenager. So excited and armed with great ideas Stan lee ran into his publishers office to bring him the great news. But the reaction was:
"Stan, that is the worst idea I have ever heard"
But, something incredible happened. The magazine didn't sell well so it was about to shut down. They were releasing the last issue and nobody cared what would be on the last cover. SO just to get it out of his system he put Spider-Man on the cover. And it became so popular that his publisher fell in love with Spider-Man .

If there is something that you feel is good, something you want to do, something that means something to you. Try to do it. Because I think you can only do your best work if you're doing what you want to do. And if you're doing it the way you think it should be done, and if you can take pride in it after you've done it. No matter what it is. So don't let idiots talk you out of something that you think is good. Just do your thing. Do it as well as you can. That's the important thing. Whatever you do give it your best shot. You'll be glad you did it" - Stan Lee

Spider-Man is a character I can definitely relate too. Five years ago I made this speech in my Speech class titled: Nerd Pride: Geeks and Nerds Now Positive Terms. I wanted to type the whole speech but here's the basics, Popular films and TV shows about adolescents and school usually include a certain type of teenager who is frequently ridiculed and rejected by his or her peers. They are often portrayed as awkward, intelligent, , shy, unattractive social outcasts with unfashionable hair and dress style. They sometimes attempt to get revenge on their peers who shun them. They are called "nerds," dweebs, dorks, geeks, brainiacs, and computers jocks. Terms like geeks and nerds have been conceptualized by researchers as social-type labels that shape the content of adolescents' identity. Today when people think of geeks and nerds they might as well name the likes of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs; whose imagination and grasp of technology have made them billions. The word nerd is a noun as in slang meaning either stupid, irritating, or unattractive person; or an intelligent but single-minded person obsessed with a non-social hobby or pursuit: a computer nerd. Nerds may spend a large amount of time on unpopular or non-mainstream activities either highly technical or relating to topics of fiction or fantasy. They have difficulty participating in sports. Nerd is a stereotype term that has been reclaimed and redefined by some as a term of pride and group identity. They are described either by their hobbies and interests or abstract qualities such as personality, social skills and physical appearance. These interests and activities are technical hobbies, topics related to science, literature, and technology. Games and activities that are described as obsessive and immature, such as trading cards, comic books, fantasy and science fiction novel s TV shows and movies, video games and anime. Other interests are A.V. Club, and the Renaissance Fair. Over time, an activity can become less nerdy. This is because of availability, better applications for the general public because of a shifting image of the majority of people taking that interest. Examples are computers, video games, the internet, books, movies, and television. With the rise of the computer industry, this has allowed many nerdy people to accumulate large fortunes. Nerdy interests like superheroes and science fiction works are now popular culture hits. Some measure of nerdiness are now considered desirable, a person who is intelligent, respectful, interesting, and able to earn a large salary. The appropriation of the word nerd was a battle that got won. It was a term that was originally intended to offend but the team that was offended took it as its own as a badge of honor. The new century has brought with it new demands and those often best equipped to deal with it are nerds. The era of nerds are upon us. The computer and internet (now google) have helped in this. Many see the nerd as intelligent, interesting, and socially acceptable. So be proud of what your interests are for there is no wrong. As Stan Lee said "Don't Let an Idiot Talk You out of Doing What you Like".
