  • Gripping modelled on a chameleon’s tongue: by inverting its elastic silicone cap, the FlexShapeGripper can pick up, gather and set back down the widest range of objects in one procedure - without the need for a manual conversion.

    I was skeptic in the start, but when it picked up that Iphone, I am sold. Hehe. Nice griper, lighter than the granule type universal gripper.

    If they combined this with their Supramotion superconducting stuff, you could have an elastic silicone *torus* (like a "watersnake" toy) which can turn itself inside out and out and out to completely surround an object. The torus itself would be suspended via the superconducting magnet, it could thus spin constantly like a wheel, no limit, it could suck up a 40 foot pole.
    It could even be used as a pump with no need to seal the rotational element.

    I was laughing, I love those sound effects. Only thing better would be "NOM". Love your videos of these clever makings.

      As someone who works in automation industry, FESTO is just about as far from 'just decorative' as is humanly possible. Pretty much anything related to automation which uses air pressure in any way has a FESTO option for when you need precision and speed, and money is not a massive issue.

    There comes a point in the video...probably around the peanut, where it's like BUT WAIT, WE CAN ALSO PICK UP ANOTHER THING! BUT HANG ON, THAT'S NOT ALL! - can you pick up anoth- WE CAN PICK UP ANOTHER THING!!!! AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT - let me guess, you're gon- SHUT UP, WE HAVE ANOTHER THING TO PICK UP.
    But seriously, it's pretty neat.

    • @robviously-rob0ts
      @robviously-rob0ts 9 років тому +1

      I'd just like to say that in all seriousness, this could be amazing for people who live with prostetics and need a better way to go about their day to day tasks.

      thats probably true too often prosthetics focus too much on imitating the lost limb rather than on funcionality. the result has in most cases limited gripping ability compared to what could have been done and can even fall into the uncanney valey if they try to hard to make it look like a regular arm.

    Could the pneumatic actuator pulling the "tongue" center inwards be replaced with a mechanical or electrical actuator? This sort of gripper could really be something in prosthetics design. Let's say if a person has lost his/her hand, this gripper could be actuated with the very muscles and tendons that control fingers.

    • @ixcutamp8059
      @ixcutamp8059 2 роки тому

      Or use a sort of piston to convert mechanical movment to pneumatic?

  • @MrJdsenior
    @MrJdsenior 9 років тому

    As always, look to nature, Think how tough it would be to come up with this design from scratch. Looks like a real advancement in gripping extremely varying objects, but it seems you would need some video feedback and software to determine orientation, if for example, you wished the robot to place parts from this "tongue". Very cool.
