- The Patee House Museum and Pony Express headquarters and Hotel in Saint Joseph Missouri.
When John Patee opened his luxurious four-story brick hotel in 1858, he knew it was an innovation for its time, but little did he suspect that 134 years later it would still be attracting visitors from across the United States.
Patee built it as a hotel, a role that was not to be because of its location more than a mile from downtown St. Joseph. Yet it was a hotel three times, a girl's college twice, and finally a shirt factory for more than 80 years.
History of Patee House
Patee House is a National Historical Landmark for having served as headquarters for the Pony Express in 1860. It was here that Pony Express operators Russell, Majors and Waddell had their main office, and it was at Patee House where Pony Express riders stayed.
During the Civil War, the Union Army took over the hotel, and Patee, who was backing the Confederacy, decided to sell the building in a nation-wide lottery. When 100 tickets came back unsold on April 28, 1865, Patee bought them himself and won back his own hotel.
It was called World's Hotel in 1882, when outlaw Jesse James was shot and killed a block up the street. The next day, the family stayed at the hotel while it served as the center of the investigation of Jesse's death. I got this info from their website below.

Thanks for watching today’s adventure. Too bad I only at 50 minutes to checkout this amazing museum.
Nothing worse than time crunches while traveling
So awesome, they preserved this Building and it's glorious history.. It's a walk back into time, a time much more simple..
Yep 👍 pretty cool 😎
Love the history in this old building 👍❤️👍 Thanks for sharing Brian 👍
This was pretty cool. Thanks for watching 👍
I love seeing these types of historical museums where you feel like your immersed within the setting 😊
Yeah, this is a nice one. The small town museums are always the best.
We could literally spend HOURS poring over everything in the museum!
Yep 👍 definitely need more than 50 minutes 😂 thanks for watching. 👍
What an eclectic museum. There is so much cool stuff crammed in there. Pony Express, the city jail, trains, cars, historic furniture, old radios - it just keeps going on and on. I can see why an hour isn't nearly enough to see everything here. Thanks for the tour!
Thanks 😊 I few though that museum and still took an hour 😂 She was reluctant to sell me a ticket 🤪 but I'm here now and it's only 10 bucks 🤪 cost more to drive back later 😂

Hello from 🇨🇷 Costa Rica. Mo has so much history. I don’t know why that place reminds me of one of my favorite movies. The outlaw Josey Whales.
That's cool 😎 I think Jesse James was killed in this town. Thanks for watching
I can imagine these hotels and stop in the Pony Express were probably some pretty welcomed sights along the routes!! Indeed, I do remember tube TVs!
Yep 👍 and this was the town were it got started 😎

I've heard the top two floors are completely crammed with more stuff they alternately display on the first two floors open to the public. Incredible place, thanks so much for your vid!

Thank you too 👍
Quite the place, so much to see. Definitely need more than an hour to tour the place. I liked the old TVs. I remember going with my dad to the hardware store in the 1960s to test tubes from our set. It was the only way to find out which one was out and then could buy a new one. Cool video.
Yeah 👍 we did the same. My dad worked as a TV repair man and every time were at someone's house he would end up tuning up the TV 📺
Hello from Naples, Florida. Very nice! An awesome place to explore, for sure. Thanks for sharing the amazing views with us, have a great weekend 👍 💯 ❤

What a huge and fascinating museum of the American west!!! Yeah, you could spend 3-4 hours there. You’ll have to return someday; maybe a collaboration, ;)

@@SomeplaceOrAnother I saw! So many neat artifacts
This looks like a fun place to explore. 🐸
Thanks 😊 it was fun
This was an interesting experience to wonder through this hotel setting and see how it would have looked all those years ago. I love the arcade machine and jukebox too :D

We enjoyed the tour of the Patee House Museum, Brian. Lot's of history and I was going to say parlour when you remembered it. The Ladies went to it after dinner while Gentlemen like us went to the smoking room to enjoy Brandy. Or in this case, the saloon! Some nice cars and even a train. A little bit of everything here. Carrying around the big camera would make the videos harder! Shame they never got their moneys worth on the gallows. 🤔But, get Snoopy back out on the dog house! Fun tour.
Oh, yeah 👍 they used to that when I was a kid. The guys would gather after dinner for a cigar and a drink. Life is so boring now 🤪 Thanks for watching 👍
wow a covered wagon kitchen as a cook that is cool to see
Yeah 👍 very cool 😎 thanks for watching 😊
Interesting history in this museum, but 50 mins is very less time to look at. Thanks for showing us around
Thanks 😊 I ran out of time it was a long day on the road 🤪
Like 52 do seu amigo do Brasil 🇧🇷 Very good
Thanks 😊
What an awesome, awesome place! Was that cake in the bakery real? 🙂 I could spend hours in that museum. So many interesting things in there. That was quite a pump organ in the house. Beautiful! ❤ That fire apparatus is incredible too. Hey, I could use some of that twine for my garden 😅 A cool covered wagon. Oh, those vacuum cleaners. Can you imagine having to lug them upstairs & back down? 💪 Gotta be strong. This was fun, and thanks for taking us along 🙂
Thanks 😊 this is an awesome museum with fake cake 😂 I can only imagine how tough people were back then and strong.
@@SomeplaceOrAnother That’s the best looking fake cake I’ve ever seen! 😊 No calories too! lol. Yes, we used to have a wonderful farm museum a few miles down the road, and I always loved going there. They definitely worked harder back then. They had saws and drills that were operated by sitting on a seat and pedaling like a bicycle in order to operate. That would make for a long day! It’s so interesting though.
The old victrola was cool
I think so too 👍 thanks for watching 😊
Nice one Brian, those spurs looked lethal, I remember my very 1st Guinness book of records way back in the day featured Robert Wadlow, he was an absolute giant… great museum you found there 👍🏻 snoopy looks out of place though 🤣
Thanks 😊 I did a video on Wadlow many years ago. It ended up being pretty popular.
That hardware store was a blast. They had a case of dynamite for sale on the shelf
Yep 👍 very cool 😎

Brain freeze 🤪 Thanks 😊
I do remember tube TVs 📺 🤔 😅 🙃
😂 I used to get in trouble for turning the tv on too soon 🤪 Needs time to warmup are you miss the beginning 😆 thanks for watching. 👍
@@SomeplaceOrAnother oh those were the days.
