I was hired specifically as a Walk Around Character at Chuck E Cheese in 2003 when I was 16. At that time, at least, we didn't have people switch off randomly. There were two of us with this specific role. We also only had one costume. I'd been acting and doing puppetry since I was a little kid so it was a dream job. On busy days, it was 20 minutes on the floor, 10 minutes resting. They were very serious about that rest time being taken. On slower days I'd spend less time on the floor and usually worked the prize counter in between costume sessions.

My main memories of going to Chuck E Cheese as a kid are dad pulling a bag of leftover game tokens from my older siblings out of the kitchen junk drawer so he wouldn't have to buy me any. Poor Mr cheese...if that was me I'd feel HORRIBLE and I'd honestly talk to the parents out of costume...and apologize and make sure the kids ok. (Yes I'm that kind of person....I would feel horrid!!!)
"Do not approach a frightened child" Oh boy! I may have been the cause for that rule change! The CEC era I grew up with was the late 80s/early 90s Chuck with the tux and bowler hat so that's the version that will always be CEC for me. But I remember always being afraid of the CEC animatronics since childhood. There were a few different locations I visited with my family growing up over the years, and there was one that still had the little windows for the Munch's Imaginary Band in their showroom, and the bathrooms would be on the other end of the room, and I remember having to psych myself up and sprinting from one end of the showroom to the other when I had to use the bathroom, and looking at the floor of the empty showroom-- just trying to avoid eye contact with the animatronics out of fear that if I looked up at the wrong time, one would come to life, lock eyes with me and reach down and snatch me and pull me up to them and kill me. My family knows I had a fear of the CEC showroom my entire childhood, and my parents would constantly give me shit for it, telling me I was being ridiculous and overreacting, and low-key gaslighting me. (This was all happening in the late 80s/early 90s, so long before FNAF came along with its niche concept of killer low-grade animatronics.) And I never knew why I had this traumatic fear, until one day my mother told me the story of how they hosted my 2nd or 3rd birthday party at a CEC (so 1989/1990), and the party was in the showroom having a good time-- apparently even I was having a great time, not yet scarred from creepy, busted Disney knock-off animatronics, and when it had come time for the presenting of the cake, singing of "Happy birthday" and for the birthday kid to blow out the candles, the kid wearing the CEC costume and holding the cake brought it over and tapped me on the shoulder to get my attention (I don't know if he was standing behind me or to the side) but according to my mother, I turned around to look at him and apparently something in me just snapped because the moment I saw this giant rat that looked like the animatronics standing right next to me and I guess realized "Oh shit, it's alive", I began to scream bloody murder! I was so deeply afraid of this CEC that I immediately darted under the table to safety and continued crying and screaming believing I was in danger. The poor kid tried to coax me out from my hiding spot but it just made it worse that my mother had to order him to just leave the cake and go! My mom said that for the rest of our time there, I stayed under the table out of fear and refused to come out for cake, ice cream and presents, I just hysterically sobbed the entire time. Even my paternal grandfather, who was just the most patient and calm man I have ever known, tried to gently coax me out from underneath the table and I refused to budge. It wasn't until my mother finally told me that we could go home and have my birthday party there that I came out from underneath the table. And I didn't just get out from the table and waited for my parents to grab everything so we could leave, as soon as I heard, "Okay we're going home" that I bolted from underneath the table and clear out the room to safety. My grandfather had to chase after me and keep watch over me near the entrance of the restaurant while we waited for my parents and other guests to grab the gifts, party favors, and everything else. From that day forward, I could never handle being in a CEC showroom without experiencing panicked anxiety and a nagging feeling of "I am not safe, I need to leave, NOW." Heck it was because of that incident that I was also frightened of animatronics at Disneyland, mostly the PotC and HM ones, and not say, the Small World ones. And the funny thing was, I loved Chuck E Cheese! I loved Disneyland and still do! But growing up, I was always fearful of animatronics. Not to forget to mention that CEC was also scary for a 90s kid because of all the child kidnappings that were occurring around the mid 90s. And of course because -idiots- people are too obsessed with FNAF and *really* want to believe it was real or based on real events, there's some assumption that kids were actually being kidnapped and murdered by CEC employees at that time, but that wasn't the case. I remember it seemed like every couple of days to a couple times a week that there was a story on the news about a child being abducted from a Chuck E Cheese in a different state, often perpetrated by adults wanting to do harm to children being able to leave the establishment with the child victim by lying to the hostess running the front, claiming to be their parent or other adult family member, and the CEC employee allowing them to leave because there was no way at the time to prove the adult was lying or telling the truth. Heck, that's why it became mandatory for adult and child guests to receive matching black light hand stamps as a means to prevent child abductions from happening, because instead of just taking the adult at their word, the hostess could check the adult's and child's stamps to see if they were the same group or not. (To the unfortunate employee that was working the walk-around Chuck costume that fateful day on July 26th, 1989 or July 26th, 1990 at a San Diego CEC location, if you remember this event and are reading this: I apologize if my traumatic experience caused you to get in trouble with your supervisor(s) or if I just made that day hell for you!)
Please, let’s all put some F’s in the chat for The Rock-afire Explosion, Chuck E. Cheese’s roots and undeniably better predecessor. They receive so little credit. 🥺❤️
Listen, I still love Chuck E Cheese pizza because above all else, my favorite flavor is nostalgia. Did you hear how they secretly rebranded as Pasqually's Pizza and sell the same pizzas with slightly thicker crust, more sauce, and more herbs and stuff on the cheese? I really liked it! Also, as someone obsessed with Pirates of the Caribbean and obsesses over all the costume differences in the films, I'd love a Distory on Captain Jack's outfits! From the original with the black/brownish hair, the piece of eight, and the reindeer femur above his bandana, all the way to part 4 Jack with the blonde streaks and the bird's head in the back. Should be fun!
< Did you hear how they secretly rebranded as Pasqually's Pizza and sell the same pizzas with slightly thicker crust, more sauce, and more herbs and stuff on the cheese? I really liked it! Their ghost kitchen? I thought they lost money with that.
I miss 1989 Chuck E. Cheese! I wish I could say the older I got, the more time I spent there but we all know that's not reality. Annnnnnd it was so shocking and alienating to see his appearance evolve into what it is today as well as what the experience is for the kids when they visit the restaurant post-90's. Like I distinctly remember mazes with tubes, a pit of balls to jump into, a ton of video games and of course SEVERAL animatronic shows. The restaurant was DARK and I loved it. Now it's all bright with no animatronics and probably zero balls.
I was a Showbiz kid, so I didn't experience any Chuck E. Cheese till 5 nights a Freddie's made my son get interested. The animatronics have really been moved aside.
Awwwe he got to see what we had as kids. I met chucky when I was young...when he had the backwards hat and vest. The animatronics didn't really do much...and mostly stayed behind the curtan offline. But I did peak behind and it wasn't scary....it was just sad. Also chucky liked to give the nastiest side eye.... ×_×
I want the evolution of Pasqually next. He is my absolute favorite of the Chuck E Cheese lineup, and I've only ever been to Chuck E Cheese's like 4 times in my life because it terrified me as a kid. You know who didn't terrify me though? Pasqually. He's awesome and I want to know his story.
Yes, please do an evolution video on all the Chuck E. Cheese characters. I remember going to a big Chuck E. Cheese here in Canada and having fun there. They had an arcade, a small ball pit and a big theatre area. I don't really remember what the animatronics looked like (this would have been the early 2000's) but it was amazing.
I was deathly afraid of mascots as a kid (I don't know why) so chuck e cheese was basically hell for me, like the thought of going there still makes me panic to this day, so if someone dragged me there and the walk-around character came near me I'd just start screaming and crying and hide under the table
Every CEC fan here knows probably that the Cool/Avenger Chuck logo and face of the company has to do with Phase, in 1994 when the cool chuck era began, the 3rd Phase (golden era) was born and brought us amazing 90s artwork which is just as good, we also saw parody movie and album posters in Showrooms. Avenger Chuck's run as the face from 2004 to 2012 (he first appeared in 1997-98) was known as the well hated Phase 4 of CEC which replaced the showroom parody posters with Emotion Posters. We all also know that 2013-2015 were the final days/years we saw Cool Chuck Awnings on Phase 3 Stores before almost all of them were removed while remodeling. Sad 😭
In the 80s we didn't have Chuck E Cheese where I lived, we had Showbiz Pizza. And just like you said, to me it was like going to Disney with the animatronic show. I did get to go to an old Pizza Time Theatre once in the 80s when we were out of town and I spotted one. I begged and pleaded with my parents to go. It took a LOT of persuasion (and the threat of a meltdown), but it worked. So I got to experience both.
I remember going to so many birthday parties at CEC. The play area was filthy, the food was awful, the prizes were cheap crap, and the animatronics were terrifying. I loved it.
As a kid, the avenger Chuck/Cool Chuck was part of my childhood. Since we didn't really go to theme parks often, I visited my local location in Moreno Valley. (it's still there but after visting in 2016, it just didn't feel the same, a lot of older ticket redemption games and attractions were removed or sold.) It was huge! For a small child in the late 2000's and early 2010 decade, this building felt big. (after I became a teenager, it wasn't as big as I remembered, and that made me a little sad) I remember eating a nice pizza there on that iconic black dot pan and playing with the games and attractions with the gold tokens. I remember getting a green glitter ball as a prize, children playing in the indoor playground (that thing was so loud and I tried to crawl through it but it felt very claustrophobic as a kid, it wasn't until again I was a teen and I fully explored the playground with no children inside but again, I had to slide my body through the enterance like a snake and it felt weird) and playing with all the cool gizmos and gadgets around the arcade.
i remember early 80s- early 90s chuck E. my favorite memory about that place was, when i was 4/5. my mom and dad took me to Chuck E Cheese after being a good girl at my family party. but I wasn't feeling to well. I was crying because we had go home. i want to stay. it was a cast member heard me crying. they were in Muchey the monster (Its been very long time. I don't remember his name). he actually stop what he was doing and walk up me and hug me. stay with me until, we got to the doors to leave. while hold his paw. he didn't even let other kids. come up to him yet. he want make sure I"m ok and in way of mascots can. since they can't talk. to let me know its going be ok. he hug me one more time and we left ^^ so yeah that memory will always be in my head. every time someone talk about that place.
I’ve seen Avenger Chuck a lot since I was young and had couple of birthdays at Chuck E Cheese, also casual dining as well. He’s incredibly awesome with the yellow, green, and purple outfit. The pizza was great too even if its frozen and not fresh dough like traditional pizza. I just love the smell of pizza in the air while also having fun.
@@NintegaDario Oh. I always thought they used frozen dough but thanks for letting me know that they now used fresh. But I'll bet the pizza isn't hand tossed like a real pizza but still tastes like a good pizza pie.
Yeah I will say this about concept unification. It was basically making all Chuck E. Cheese restaurants combine elements of CEC and Showbiz. For instance, they kinda kept the Rock Afire Explosion alive with Munch’s Make Believe Band, because before that they were just the Pizza Time Players and didn’t have an actual band design.
I was born in 1993 and I went to Chuck E Cheese often as a kid but I swear I can remember his old design from when I was really little even though it should of been out of use by then, maybe the one I went to just never updated their costume until later. I even remember being taken aback when he switched to the purple costume with sneakers because it looked so different then what I was used to
Always used to go to Chuck E Cheese when I was a kid. I actually recently watched a video of the characters dancing to the song Bad Romance 😂😂😂 I can't lie, I love the video and I love the song
I have been going to Chuck E. Cheese's since I was a baby in the late 90s. Hard to believe back then, I was scared of Chuck E. until the early-mid 2000s. I still go there today!
I would love to hear the insane tales of other Check E. Cheese characters and costumes. Also I am imagining Check E. Cheese when he quits smoking with that vest just lined with nicotine patches...
My favorite Chuck era is probably the original Pizza Time Theater look. I mean the aesthetics and his whole personality in general is just amazing and a bit funny too. Also the Rockstar Chuck backstory is wild lol.
This is the first time I’ve ever heard the Portrait show chuck E’s voice and he better have said “I would say I’m walking here, but that’s not happening” Get it, cuz he only has a top and no legs 😏
I love CEC, but I now have a problem with the CEC at my home. It's not that I had a bad experience there. It's because I basically was told from ages 2 through 18 that Helen Henny was Chuck E.'s girlfriend. They always showcased those costume videos with them together whilst a song about falling in love played in the background. They made me think that crap was canon and I believed it for my entire childhood. It's just Helen having a crush on Chuck. I feel robbed.
I grew up with the cool/ avenger chuck. I do and will always love the purple and green shirt and cap. It was very good. I did not know about they were in picture frames in the animatronic forms in the first Chuck E. Cheese. But yeah I grew up with that Chuck E. Cheese. Good video by the way!
Lol the fan art omg 😂 I was a toddler when avenger Chuck E. Cheese appeared in ‘94so that’s the one I know and love. My local Chuck E. Cheese still had the 80’s version animatronic for the show though and I was super confused. He was creepy and didn’t look anything like chuck on the floor. I didn’t know why he looked so different.
My favorite is definitely tuxedo chuck! Especially with the avenger chuck mascot head! Scott Wilson had my favorite voice, but Duncan Brandon has the voice I grew up with. Avenger chuck always has a special place in my heart for sure
I don't know if you like Barney the Dinosaur but I think you should do a evolution of the Barney, Baby Bop and BJ costumes. Cause they have a incredible history in costume designs.
The Chuck E Cheese I remember was the 90's Avenger one. I went all the time as a kid and when we drove by my mom would have to distract me otherwise I'd beg her to take me to Chuck E Cheese's. I don't really remember the pizza. I remember the tokens, tickets, games, and prizes. I would save my ticket receipts hoping to get a big prize which I unfortunately never did get anything super cool.
I remember one time when I was little and I didn't take medication yet for my ADHD, I ran around stealing kids tickets. My parents made me give them back and I haven't stolen anything since XD
The founders of Dave and Busters were big fans of Showbiz Pizza, which was also located in the Dallas area. They invited my dad (the founder of Showbiz Pizza) and I to have dinner with them one time (1984).
I'm surprised the "turn of the fruitcake dog" clip wasn't used, or that he didn't bring up Chuckster CEC. I do wish CEC Entertainment would redesign Chuck's outfit to give him the best of both worlds: the shady carny look and his avenger outfit.
My childhood Chuck E. Cheese experience was wild. The walk around character was avenger Chuck but I remember the Chuck animatronic was still wearing a suit when I was young, roughly around the year 2000.
Born in 1997 here. I literally had my 4th birthday party (so this was Jan 2001) at Chuck E. Cheese and had a blast there...and then screamed, cried, and ran away when I saw the costume version of Chuck. The sheer terror caused me to not form ANY memories of that day, which SUCKED because I loved Chuck E. Cheese as an older kid!
OMG Thank You Thank You so much for mentioning me!!!!!!! I honestly knew you would do Chuck eventually, and I think you did better than me at explaining Chuck's history. Also that guy in that one picture is Tim Burton.
The worst thing is that now since the pandemic started, in my local chucky cheese there used to be tickets and when chucky came out he gave out so many tickets but now they can't give tickets cause of covid so when he comes out he just stands there like a statue and no one comes to see him. So sad 😞
When I was little I used to be terrified Chuck E. Cheese like I was terrified of the animatronics and even the walk around. I was so terrified back then.
I SERIOUSLY do not remember Chuck E Cheese being as well lit as it is in your footage. I feel like it needs to be dark to cover the dinge and kid germs.
I’ve only been to Chuck E. Cheese twice in my life so, I’m very jealous of your multiple experiences. I remember the first time so well! Going there to celebrate the completion of second grade. Loooooved Chuck E. Cheese and my favorite part about it was the make believe band. it kinda bummed me out when they took away the band and just had chuck
Growing up in my area we didn't have Chuck E. Cheese We had GattiLand/GattiTown. That was where you wanted to go every Saturday. When I was about 9 we got a Chuck E. Cheese but it was kind of small and I only went there once, for like my mom's friend's toddler's birthday. It was just alright. Meanwhile Gatti had giant movie rooms that were always playing Cartoon Network, and BUMPER CARS!!!!

Their ghost kitchen? I thought they lost money with that.

i was born in 03 so i grew up with avenger chuck i miss it aww
Same
same!!!
I remember those print out photos! I still have some lying around of me and an old friend. Great video Dan!
Same bro i have one hanging on my wall with my sister from 2014
One of my earliest memories is of being terrified of the band so my mom dragged me screaming closer to the stage.
She tried to do another Bite Of 87?
Your mom is evil...Nah, I'm joking, are you still afraid of them? Or have you conquered your fears...When you were probably a toddler something
@@solaris_knight99 No I'm not. It's still a crazy memory for me though
@@wendymccoy1093 That's good to know :)
Oh hey! That’s my art at 12:16 ! That’s awesome, thanks man :D
Nice art
I was a Showbiz kid, so I didn't experience any Chuck E. Cheese till 5 nights a Freddie's made my son get interested. The animatronics have really been moved aside.
Awwwe he got to see what we had as kids. I met chucky when I was young...when he had the backwards hat and vest. The animatronics didn't really do much...and mostly stayed behind the curtan offline. But I did peak behind and it wasn't scary....it was just sad. Also chucky liked to give the nastiest side eye.... ×_×
Big YES to a Rat Pack evolution video! 🧀🍕
The Pizza was amazing I Grew up going to CHUCK E CHEESE
Me too
Same in jaida birthday in 2019
Amazing...ly shit. I loved it, though, lol.
I love Chuck E Cheese, so many of my birthdays were spent there...
This video is absolutely my lane. I can talk about Chuck E Cheese history for hours.
Sad 😭
PLEASE DO EVOLUTION OF PASQUALLY, HELEN HENNY, JASPER AND MUNCH!
that would be great
Yes
I can't wait to see that
In the 80s we didn't have Chuck E Cheese where I lived, we had Showbiz Pizza. So I got to experience both.
i wish i could've grown up with showbiz
Okay but which one did you like more
i suggest the chuck e cheese rat pack evolution next
@Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza Time Theatre i think they mean the other band members
I miss the Chuck e of the late 90’s and 2000s. They should have kept with that style
Back in my day, Chuck E. Cheese’s would be sponsoring with PBS Kids
i agree i miss tha 90's and 2000's version
Early 90s Whenever Chuck E came out, I was the one hiding under the table! Lmao. He scared the crap out of me! Lol
I remember going to so many birthday parties at CEC. The play area was filthy, the food was awful, the prizes were cheap crap, and the animatronics were terrifying. I loved it.
oh childhood
Not many people realize this, but Chuck actually became a mouse in 1994 with the Cool Chuck redesign
I loved this video . I watched it with my mom and she enjoyed the video . She laughed and she learned new things ! You’re commentary is hilarious
The art and pictures in this video were just beautiful! I literally could not stop laughing😂
i remember early 80s- early 90s chuck E. my favorite memory about that place was, when i was 4/5. my mom and dad took me to Chuck E Cheese after being a good girl at my family party. but I wasn't feeling to well.
It's not frozen, the pizza is the only thing freshly made at Chuck E. Cheese's.
@@NintegaDario Oh. I always thought they used frozen dough but thanks for letting me know that they now used fresh. But I'll bet the pizza isn't hand tossed like a real pizza but still tastes like a good pizza pie.
Pizza time theater and showbiz pizza merged in 1985 and the Rock Afire explosion was replaced in 1989
Man this brings back 90s and 00s nostalgia
Yeah I will say this about concept unification. It was basically making all Chuck E. Cheese restaurants combine elements of CEC and Showbiz. For instance, they kinda kept the Rock Afire Explosion alive with Munch’s Make Believe Band, because before that they were just the Pizza Time Players and didn’t have an actual band design.
4:17 That's a young Tim Burton and I Googled it to double check.
Thank you for this 🙏🏼
Mickey mouse and chuck e cheese are both my favorites
Imagine the power goes out and then Chucky's behind you with a music box playing.
I'd rather that than ua-cam.com/video/iLvGRgIhcXo/v-deo.html.
*Legit made my stomach turn.*
I actually recently watched a video of the characters dancing to the song Bad Romance 😂😂😂
I can't lie, I love the video and I love the song
I worked at Chuck E Cheese for a year in high school. I will never forget the small of that costume
Pls make a vid on the evolution of the other characters at Chuck-E-Cheese’s Pizza Time Theater
This is the first time I’ve ever heard the Portrait show chuck E’s voice and he better have said “I would say I’m walking here, but that’s not happening”
Get it, cuz he only has a top and no legs 😏
Lol the fan art omg 😂
I was a toddler when avenger Chuck E. Cheese appeared in ‘94so that’s the one I know and love. My local Chuck E. Cheese still had the 80’s version animatronic for the show though and I was super confused. He was creepy and didn’t look anything like chuck on the floor. I didn’t know why he looked so different.
I worked at CEC for 3 years it was so fun!!! I loved being the Big Cheese!!!
My favorite is definitely tuxedo chuck! Especially with the avenger chuck mascot head! Scott Wilson had my favorite voice, but Duncan Brandon has the voice I grew up with. Avenger chuck always has a special place in my heart for sure
I never thought this would happen! I needed something like this
I don't know if you like Barney the Dinosaur but I think you should do a evolution of the Barney, Baby Bop and BJ costumes. Cause they have a incredible history in costume designs.
Oooh yes. I was definitely a Barney kid (late 90s-early 2000s) now my kids are obsessed with all my old VHS tapes 😂
My friend and I took a deep dive into Chuck E. Cheese’s origin and lore a few years back, and I’ve been telling everyone I know about it since 😅
I miss Duncan Brannan as the voice of Chuck E. Cheese.
Can we say barcades like Dave and Buster's and Round1 are just the grown-up version of Chuck E. Cheese
The founders of Dave and Busters were big fans of Showbiz Pizza, which was also located in the Dallas area. They invited my dad (the founder of Showbiz Pizza) and I to have dinner with them one time (1984).
Chuck E. Cheese is not a disney ripoff, it is a superior version
The walk around character was avenger Chuck but I remember the Chuck animatronic was still wearing a suit when I was young, roughly around the year 2000.
chuck e cheese singlehandedly murdered the entire rock afire explosion and i will never forgive him for that
Yes but actually no.
@@ElKaelo516 it's a joke
The PFP works too well with this comment. 🤣
@@NintegaDario i just changed it a few days ago ahaha
Born in 1997 here. I literally had my 4th birthday party (so this was Jan 2001) at Chuck E. Cheese and had a blast there...and then screamed, cried, and ran away when I saw the costume version of Chuck. The sheer terror caused me to not form ANY memories of that day, which SUCKED because I loved Chuck E. Cheese as an older kid!
I Miss Him Even Tho I Have Never Been To Chuck E Cheese I Miss Him
OMG Thank You Thank You so much for mentioning me!!!!!!! I honestly knew you would do Chuck eventually, and I think you did better than me at explaining Chuck's history.
Also that guy in that one picture is Tim Burton.
That new Chuck design is so damn awful and generic. Looks like a rejected video game mascot.

He should of started smoking again

Avenger chuck was my Chuck E. Cheese , I wanna even own a plush of them thst was probably 100000000000000000000 tickets
This has so far been a good one. It’s real genuine energy. I love it
The worst thing is that now since the pandemic started, in my local chucky cheese there used to be tickets and when chucky came out he gave out so many tickets but now they can't give tickets cause of covid so when he comes out he just stands there like a statue and no one comes to see him. So sad 😞
i wouldnt mind seeing evouluions foe characters like jasper and mr munch
When I was little I used to be terrified Chuck E. Cheese like I was terrified of the animatronics and even the walk around. I was so terrified back then.
Who remembers growing up in the 70s knowing that Chuckie used to call crusty the cat a jukebox
It was so fun and whimsical and made me very happy! I love 90s Chuck best for sure! Great video Dan! Nice to hear from Kevin in this video too! He is terrific at reading backstories! Please do more videos with Chuck E. Cheese someday!
High key want one of those bite me shirts.
Disney Dan, I agree with you about Chuckie Cheese looking good in a tuxedo I would love to see this today, by the way I loved Chuckie Cheese as a kid, I even celebrated my 13th birthday there! It's so much fun!
Loooooved Chuck E. Cheese and my favorite part about it was the make believe band. it kinda bummed me out when they took away the band and just had chuck
The deviantart fanart that you used throughout the video is SO funny you've reached your target audience

Growing up in my area we didn't have Chuck E. Cheese We had GattiLand/GattiTown. That was where you wanted to go every Saturday. When I was about 9 we got a Chuck E. Meanwhile Gatti had giant movie rooms that were always playing Cartoon Network, and BUMPER CARS!!!!
