I use to be a childcare teacher for a chain and it was dreadful. The wages were abysmal, ratios were overwhelming, and the management didn’t care about protecting the children or workers. All they cared for were the money in their pockets. The parents paid A LOT for the childcare. I always wondered where the money went since the kids never got updated supplies.
That's why schools must be public!

I was about to say this: I am currently working at one. Really considering changing careers, I love working with children but not enough pay, plus my lazy coworkers are making me stress more is not worth it.
As a former worker, reason I would never do this again= Low wages, bad management , no background checks, parents that expect centers to raise their children from scratch , kids with violent behavioral issues being left all day at the center and the parents get away with it , then they come by acting like they don’t know why their child misbehaves and bullies others , some workers are sick and tired of this nonsense !

Breakdown of the family. People should raise their own kids. Childcare should not be the fallback, instead it should be used sparingly. Teachers and childcare workers were never supposed to raise people's kids!
@@meriani777at least in the state I live in and the facilities I applied for there are requirements for background checks. So not all of them are like this.
Too many people have no business having kids. Our society normalized having babies and 3 months later dropping it to somebody else to raise them from then on basically. It became somebody else’s job. They leave the kids to rot in those day care all day and we know not everybody truly needs all that time. I was disgusted once I had my own kids and went tour dozens of day care centers around orlando Florida. Truly horrible. On the flip side, I have friends who nanny for rich families and they’d have them working 24/7 if they could. So outsourcing child care is sort of a cultural thing now, it’s not just a day care issue.

I used to work at a few different preschools. I no longer do.The work is grossly under payed and you are under appreciated.The owners get rich, the workers and teachers do not.
Me too. I was a preschool teacher for 16 years. Now I have a home daycare. I will never go back to a preschool again

Yep…$10/hr for 40hrs a week…with no benefits. No 401k or PTO. Or health insurance. And this job you don’t sit on your butt all day. Bathroom breaks are a nightmare. Will never work at daycare again.

I stopped sending my kids to daycare once I realized I was missing out on every aspect of their lives. My youngest daughter took her first steps at a daycare and I literally cried myself to sleep that night. I quit my job, took them out of daycare, and now I work part time weekends so I can stay at home with my family. I vowed to never put us through that again, although financially it is overwhelming. My husband and I have to make do with less income, but I know my kids want to remember their childhoods with me.
As someone who didn’t have my mom growing up, I thank you for doing this. Your babies will remember this for the rest of their lives and they’ll grow up knowing you love them.
I'm the 2nd of 4, and before I was born my older brother did go to daycare. My parents had a very similar reasoning as to why my mom quit her full-time job to mostly stay home with us kids after I was born-they didn't want to pay an arm and a leg to have other people raise their kids. My mom instead worked part-time serving tables and made a LOT of sacrifices on herself so that we kids were raised comfortably.
Besides your paycheck would go straight to daycare, what's the sacrifice?
Missing your child's upbringing to pay someone else to raise them with you entire check?
Stay home with your children and don't feel guilty, bc I did the same thing. I hated going to work.
Don't get me started, women belong at home raising their own children and being nuturers.

When I worked at a daycare. We made it a point not to tell when we saw milestones. I thought that was golden rule..😞
My husband and I had to make the decision for me to stay home during the week and only work on weekends since I was a healthcare worker. It was cheaper that way vs having to pay childcare for 2 small children. Sometimes you have to make that sacrifice until your kids are older and in school.

My husband and I made the decision as well. I could go back to work anytime I choose but with the cost of childcare and having twins I would be working just to pay these astronomical child care prices. I was fortunate enough to find a wfh job where I can take customer service calls and make my own schedule so I can make money and accommodate my kids schedule especially now that they are in kindergarten
And there is a priceless upside... that time for your kids with their mom. This time with you would have benefited them immensely.
I worked in childcare for almost 6 years. 2016. I had enough. I had to quit. We were underpaid, ratios were out of control, always understaffed. it affected my mental health in the worst way. On top of that, I was exhausted. Parents were not willing to work with us when their child was acting out. We were always getting blamed for their childs behavior.
The owners did not care about us. Must of been nice to own two beach houses and a house on the lake, meanwhile I was still living at home and not making a damn dime
The early childhood years are the most important in a childs life. We were molding these children for the future, and parents treated us like glorified babysitters.
This is why I have so much respect and love for childcare workers.

I worked in my community college’s daycare center for about a year and my experience was similar, except that the parents/families that I worked with were wonderful. I worked primarily with toddlers. The pay was also low, and like you, our ratios were also off and we were understaffed. It was very rewarding, but draining work. I always worked hard to be 100% present for the children, and the connections I made with them were evident of that. But ultimately I was transferring and the amount that I was being payed wasn’t enough to justify the drive in a different part of town.
I haven't worked in ECE since like 2009. If it paid a living wage, I would have never pursued any other career fields. As you alluded to, only the owners really profit off of that.
Good for you. I quit too. I was a preschool teacher for 4ish years in California the pay was not bad. I moved to Texas this year and the pay is $7.5/h lower than my pay in CA and the ratio is higher. That’s ridiculous, so I quit this field. I was pretty good in doing the job and actually enjoy many things in working in the classroom but there are too many cons than pros. I will never go back to that field.
I think the government should not expect the population to have more kids if they can't afford them and they ( the government) arent willing to provide essential childcare for those who need it.
Well that’s the first problem with any country. We have to stop depending on the government

@@bigchonkerraccoon5046 Finland’s population is only 5.5M. Under 2% of that of the US. This is the equivalent of a small US State government. It’s much more difficult for tax dollars to make their way back to individuals when the government is so bloated and complex. Finland’s citizens have a lot more influence and power over their own federal government.
I made up my mind not having a child/children.
I have been looking after my younger brother and sister. I promised myself I don't want to have a child/children. It's very hard jobs... taking care of children, working full time and house keeping, cooking and being a teacher at home.🥴😭

As a childcare teacher who puts in a lot of extra time and money myself. It’s hurting all of us and we are scared. I don’t want my job to disappear
Exactly, it’s been my dream to open up a daycare one day! But seeing all these comments discourages me, some people are advocating for childcare systems to be shut down completely, which I don’t think is a proper solution, we should come up with a solution for everyone, the moms who can’t afford childcare and the workers who want to get paid for what they’re worth and who actually loves their job and want to make a career out of this. Lots of daycare teachers have went to college to get their degrees specializing in this and so for some people to advocate for it to be somewhat free or have it shut down completely is just plain wrong to me. Why should the working people who are using childcare still get to keep their jobs and careers while some are saying that childcare should be gone, hence, taking our careers and jobs.
As long as people keep having kids, and let’s face it, they’re not going to stop. Your job will never disappear. If the cost of living continues to rise then both parents will eventually have to return to work. Because one person will not be able to fully sustain the family. It would be impossible.
@@Liznvx yes, but the quality won’t be there. My state is talking about lowering minimum staff ages and increasing class sizes. Would you want your infant in a class with 2 teenagers that has 10-12 babies in it?
This is so upsetting, I want to cry for these parents. I'm very fortunate to work remotely with added help from my mom who lives with us.

I loved my job, but I have become a stay at home mom due to this issue. Everything is so expensive now, groceries, mortgage, gas, utility bills, daycare, etc.
I worked preschool for 5 years, i LOVE infants but the pay is pathetic, and always under staffed. I was constantly sick!
I want to leave my job and work with special needs children but the pay is so little. I'm hoping something changes
Our priorities for childcare centers aren't being considered. Many parents don't have money to pay for daycare.
And people ask why the younger generation isn't having as many kids anymore.
Me and my husband looked at our budget and I was working just to pay for child care. Finally we decided enough is enough and became a stay at home mom and best decision because we are able to afford more. It’s not easy but it’s the better way also I’m able to also spend way more time with my boys.
This has been coming for years!!! But no one would listen!!! And now it is a crisis. The overhead for child care owners is crazy.

Except MOST daycares make you pay weekly whether your child goes 1 day or 5 days... so having a family member watch your child one day does nothing.

That's exactly what I thought.
It’s because the law says you can only have X number of children per adult. Where I live it’s 6 children per adult, 2 per adult if they are under 18 months. Which means a center with 6 employees can only have between 12-36 children daily. If you decide to only come 2 days a week how do they make that work? They have to hold that space for your child for the full 5 days whether you come or not because it’s very difficult to schedule part timers that line up exactly with each other’s schedules. And they have to pay their employees whether you all show up every day or not.
@@luthen4464 I understand that but they are trying to make a point saying you as a parent can save money by having a family member watch your child 1-2 days per week. That statement isn't true bc I'm still paying for those days at the daycare whether my child is there or not.

I agree. It's sad that entertainers, athletes and mega churches get so much money for absolutely no reason. The real people who matter are our educators. I would recommend all families to consider homeschooling. However that is a very expensive path as well. Imagine feeding three meals a day and paying for curriculum. I wish our country was different and loved the people more than our politicians

Pretty much why Japan had low birth rates. Their government won’t fund for child care because it’s going towards the elderly which make up majority of the population.
And look where they are now? Trying to throw money at it and the young ones are not budging. Doesn't help that it's a very patriarchal society and the women are all like, I ain't about that life 😅

In Canada you need to be certified and go through a criminal record check. USA needs to apply this as too many daycare incidents happen.
It's quite a bit hard for parents who they have to working and need children carer.😢
Sucks to have this happen to quality daycares, and have to scramble to find someone that you can even trust! I remember when raising my kids, my husband worked during the day, and I work the night shift at the hospital. We did what needed to be done!
1.) Raise the wage starting with 20+ an hour
2.) Start making parents step up and actually discipline their children and if nothing changes, then come up with a written up suspension plan.
3.) Stop treating daycare workers like babysitters/nannies cause they count as teachers as well.
4.) Administration needs to step up and look out for their employees and quit dumping kids on top of more kids in classrooms knowing that it’s just too much.
Maybe then y’all will start seeing decent daycares with qualified/experienced teachers again.

Nannies cost more than daycare. Some starting at $20/hr and raising their hourly rate the more experience they get. At least in the U.S. and from what I looked at the nanny sites in my city.

I just had another baby. The cost of day care is $430-$500 a week. We live Den, Co. I work days and my husband work nights. We also have 2 older children. This was the issue when they were younger too. I worked and my husband was the stay at home dad. With no help from fam we had to do what we have to do. Day care is really expensive.

The cost for our two is $545 and daycare sent a letter they may need to do another raise in the new year 😢

We almost lost everything trying to afford childcare over the summer. Now one of our 3 children are 3 different places during the week while I work because the school cut preschool days from 4 days a week to 2 half days smh.
I am almost in tears most days. What are we to do as parents.

My children will be at home with me, Daycare is such a scam it's ridiculous. As a former daycare worker, they get treated so badly and underpaid. It's sickening.
I left my career after earning my master's degree. My husband and I did the math. Even if I was making $60K per year working as an adjunct instructor in my field at a university, $20K of that would go towards daycare for our 2 children, gas, and food costs. That would leave $10K for rent after taxes. Hiring a babysitter is $15/hr. So basically I would only be contributing towards rent and breaking even by sending our kids to daycare. Therefore, I am keeping my children at home and running a small business. I tried to find work in my field for 2 years before it was clear that the contracts would not hold up due to Covid. I tried to take on contractor gigs. There is not a sustainable way for women to work and leave our kids in daycare. The government knows this and it is on purpose. They don't want us to have more children. They want the immigrants to replace us, otherwise they would have stopped the illegal immigration from happening. Our country has already been weakened by Covid, this is just the next step in their plan for another country to take over.

Good for you!! I have stayed home ever since becoming a mom four years ago and while it is not without sacrifice, it has been the best decision we could have made for me and for my kids. Some days are hard, but they're worth it.

I would personally love to see huge reforms to child care programs. My house actually backs up to one, and I wouldn't put my kids if I had kids in it because of the way one of the workers talks to the kids and how she treats the kids. The reason I am saying all of this is that I have observed her from my bedroom window
You should report it and try to record it if possible. I was abused in daycare, and even at almost 50 yrs old, it still haunts me.

Most daycares in my area will only do “full time” meaning they charge 8 hours 5 days a week. Why? Because they know they can. Spots are limited. I went down to PT work about 5 years ago. It’s sad. Labor shortage lol
Definitely. My nephews' daycare had an outbreak of hand-foot-mouth disease, so my sister keep them out of daycare for a month. She still had to pay for the whole month to keep the spots. (The kid with HFM still attended the whole time despite the contagious condition...)
This is so sad, and such a failure when it comes to daycare workers and parents in this country. For years, my family lived paycheck to paycheck putting our 3 kids through child care; we didn’t even start saving until we were nearly 40. Parents are set up for failure. And these teachers aren’t payed anyway near a livable wage.
Only 10k a year?? What a joke. In Austin, high quality infant care can cost between 1500-1800 per month. Teachers have to pay that during the summer too to hold their place in daycare. With everything considered, my husband and I calculated that we would lose money every month if I taught elementary school instead of staying home with our two kids.
Average daycare here in Tampa is probably 15-20k per child here.
And they wonder why birth rates are dropping. My husband and I will not be having kids because the cost of raising just 1 in America is crazy!
Here in Brazil childcare is for free! Isn't USA the richest country in the whole world???? How come little children don't have public schools?!?!?!

It’s worse here in Canada. Parents have their children on wait lists for months, and the fees are as high as monthly rents. It’s a North American problem.

There is a fantastic commentator Suzanne Vekner who talks about kids in daycare. It's so tough that daycare is very expensive but maybe more families could use this as a wake up call to sacrifice one paycheck and the mom stays home while her kids are little. I know I'll take some heat for this comment but I think it's an option more families should consider. It may mean they need to readjust their lives- move to a less expensive home, one less vacation a year, eating at home more than going out etc... basically living simply like our grandparents did (and every generation before them).
You're on to something though. My husband is the one at home with our newborn since I was making more even when he worked (I'm healthcare, he was postal service). It's been pretty eye opening. I make 50k before taxes but we're in a low COL area, we have just enough to get by and we don't buy anything extravagant. A lot of people have gotten used to lifestyle creep from extra income or use work as an escape, so if you suggest staying at home they think you're crazy.
@Xiosoranox totally agree. The lifestyle creep is a big one. Couples spending too much on a lifestyle well a ove their needs, and then being shocked when kids come along and they are struggling has been a big issue amongst some of my friends. They signed up to a mortgage that requires two incomes to sustain, leaving them little options for the wife or husband to stay home and be a full time parent. I k ow so ma y people in their 30s who live very 'fancy' lifestyles- nice cars, couple vacations a year, bigger houses than the need, new clothes all the time, brunches and coffees out all the time. I think instagram etc have normalized this kind of lifestyle, but this has never been the norm in history when raising a family. Raising a family is sacrifice not only on one's time but on one's money... it's about choice. I think a lot more people who would happier and enjoy the parenting journey more too if they simplified, understood this is the time for spending less money and spending more time as a family.
I love Vekner’s podcast. My husband and I have decided that I will stay at home until our kid is school age. We know I can provide a better experience than any daycare

It really sucks that your either pay a second mortgage/rent for full time daycare or one parent stays home and cares for the kids, meaning you lose a 2nd household income. It’s such a catch 22. I thank God for my mother being able to watch my baby for me.
I don't miss paying $200 a week just for the daycare to watch my 6 month old and that's pre covid. I would not have another kid because of the finances/problems with the world.
They talk about a tax credit but that's one time a year when you get taxes back. A lot of parent(s) use that money to catch up on bills they were struggling for months to pay. Then the ignorant ones buying crap they don't need.
The government fought so much for women not to abort the babies but won't help more to help financially take care of them/do more to protect these kids. Allow rent prices and property taxes to sky rocket amongst other things that went up. A lot of women(married or not) would work if they had affordable childcare. Nowadays it takes two incomes to try and stay afloat.
And a lot of people don't have family that can/or even want to watch all their kids. Many grandmas are having to still work themselves, so it's not like back in the day where they were just sitting around watching grandkids/cooking all day.
People would say "oh you shouldn't have kids if you couldn't afford them." Now the same ones complaining about the low birth rates because people finally decided they don't want the financial hassle that comes with having kids

That right there. I am technically prochoice (I understand why people oppose it but I feel like making it illegal doesn't stop it and I have know women whose lives were at risk if they continued a pregnancy) I also support programs that help with child care like head start and early head start and I agree: it baffles me how many people strongly oppose abortions but in the same breath will condemn social programs like affordable childcare. That's not prolife, it's probirth.
@@littlesongbird1 I didn't believe in abortion because I was raised in the church. However, once I got to know people that were abused/neglected as kids and I saw unlimited crime stories of kids that got abused/neglected/or murdered by their parent(s)/or their mates and how so many kids never get adopted and even got neglected, starved, abused and murdered in foster care.
I became a firm believer in if these females don't want to birth children, then that's their right. I agree to disagree. What's worse a kid life ended in the womb or they were abused/life taken violently after they're born🤨
People always say put them up for adoption but then they go on about their lives not helping take care of these kids/even the moms. Yea there's some happy endings for some kids but for many they didn't have a happy family that adopted them.
Many of these kids that were abused turn into adult unstable creatures that make the choice to harm others instead of finding a healthier solution to dealing with trauma. We are walking around with ticking 💣 that find joy in harming kids/adults because they don't want to put in the work to process what happened to them as a kid. They hurt so they want to hurt others.
None of their "solutions" are solutions. Have a friend or family member watch your kids one day a week and don't pay them! Ask you boss if you can work from home so you can half watch your kids half do your work! Wow, and people wonder why younger generations aren't having kids.
Not every company allows their employees to work from home. Some of these parents work only on site. So what are you talking about? 🤦🏻♀️
What if you have no relatives or friends nearby, and you can't work from home?

I used to work at a daycare for a couple of years. The pay way awful , the turnover rate was high, management was bad, the parents were HORRIBLE AND RUDE. ITS NOT WORTH IT. They wonder why there’s a teacher shortage…. TREAT TEACHERS BETTER. Now, I teach overseas . It’s much better
Just resigned from child care last month. All the funding the Directors want for the school but teachers dont get a raise to deal with unruly students who back talk you , and parents who act like "My KId DoEsnt Do ThAT"😒🙄
The cost of childcare is exactly why me and my husband are holding off on our second, and most likely last child. It’s a decision that hurts but also out of our control and it’s frustrating.
It’s sad that either mom or dad can’t stay home with their kids….if not, a grandmother or other loving family member. It’s rough out there, and kids are being thrown into bad situations. Parents are paying big money to people who, in many cases, don’t care about their kids.

It's not always that the "can't". The true reality is that they won't because they see more value in working and staying active in the work force. Usually the majority of one spouses pay check goes towards childcare and it would make more since and they might save more money if they stayed home but that's not a sacrifice some parents want to make.

@@sbabywhine The thing is...if one parent stays home with the kids, then that will probably derail their career and hurt the rest of their lifetime earnings and even their ability to have much money in retirement, since not very many employers take too kindly to workers with yearslong gaps in their resumes. I've heard so many horror stories about parents, usually moms, who become stay at home parents "only until the kids are in school" and it turns into like 15-20+ years out of the workforce. There's so many SAHP, mostly women, who end up in poverty after a divorce and/or completely destitiute in old age because they gave their careers up to raise kids and take care of households with no compensation during their peak earning years.

But at the end of life that "stable" career only brought more debt, more time away from love ones and usually more overspending. They STILL end up with no retirement or security because that extra 15 grand a year (after the cost of child care) is STILL spent on a bigger home, a bigger tv etc.... all things that don't actually add lasting value to the family. It's not "that" challenging to re enter the work force after the children enter school unless you have a tech job but even then who's to say you can't continue to expand your education and stay active in the field in other ways at home?

It’s about whether people who don’t have children or who have a parent stay home to take care of children want to pay more taxes to subsidize others peoples childcare expenses. Yep it’s ridiculous. For my three kiddos it was almost $3000 a month. That’s more than my mortgage. I’m better off staying home with them instead of working. I thank God every day for an amazing husband who works hard for our family that allows me to stay home. I give all the praises to single mommas out there. Idk how they do it!!
As a parent of young children I researched high and low for a decent preschool environment NOT a day care center. Smashing majority of places are merely “kid storage” as I nicknamed them. But this is partly due to the parents who just drop their kids there all day as soon as they’re 3 months old and from then on it’s somebody else’s job to truly raise that kid. Big chunk of our society accepts this as normal. My husband and I made arrangements with our careers to be home as much as we could with our littles in the first few years of their life. We sacrificed A LOT of our own time, passed on job promotions, etc. But truth be told a lot of parents aren’t willing to do that. Like the lady in this video who admits the husband is the bread winner but yet she works too and kids are in there all day long. Why??? Why did we normalize this? It’s our jobs to raise our kids. These ladies raising your children for you are true angels and heaven has a special place for them. But they also deserve better pay and a cultural adjustment from our society. Not all these kids in there rotting all day in daycare centers have parents who truly NEED them to be there that long.
Nobody mentions this and its huge. It used to be that one parent would stay home because one income was enough to live off of. With companies capping wages a lot of people need 2 incomes to survive. On the other hand, you have a lot of people that actually do make enough on one and just want extra disposable income or get bored being at home. Either way this system we're in isn't sustainable long term.

They probably could have made do without her extra income, but it helped them give my sibling and I little extras and made sure we were never lacking. She told me recently that, if she were growing up in this economy/work culture she would never have had kids b/c it's financially near impossible.
You do realize there are parents that literally cannot afford to not go to work? Do you realize there are single parents? Do you realize there are families that have NO support bc of no family? You do realize that everyone doesn’t have flexible fancy career? Or that they’re able to work nights? You do realize that some ppl are barely getting by and need childcare and unfortunately have to sacrifice seeing their kids? Day care cost is an absurd, workers are grossly underpaid, and our economy scrambling hasn’t helped anything improve. But if you read my comment again you see that I was referring to another aspect of child care culture in America. Ask anybody who works in a day care facility and they’ll tell you how many parents leave their kids there way too long when they don’t truly need to. I also have friends who nanny for rich families and they’d have my friends working 24/7 if they could. They don’t wanna parent. Some people wanna outsource the care, and that’s an issue too. I’m not privileged at all, I’m an immigrant with no family around. But once I chose to have kids I made sacrifices to be there for them. Even if that means living a bit more frugally, not taking promotions because we cannot afford the time commitment, driving an older car, etc.

I did the math and after childcare expenses I would bring home $100 a month, to work 40hrs a week. This was almost 20 years ago. I figured I could do something from home to make that $100 and stayed home with my baby. I think many young moms are arriving at similar conclusions.
This is just one of the 100 reasons why I will not have children.
If I was in another country I would consider it but, in the US I will not.
Yup, I would have lost money a week after taxes were taken out of my check so it wasn’t worth it and I’ve stayed at home with my son since he was 6 months old,, I went back from maternity leave at 4 months and 2 months later I left my job I loved, and we get by

I worked as a preschool teacher for many years and I echo what most have said (poor wages, lack of management etc) The worst for me was I noticed some of the children under my care were on the spectrum (or had some kind of speech/learning disability) and one of the preschools I worked for the management commanded me to not tell the parents because they didn’t want to loose them as clients (plus they had siblings) I could not keep silent and not tell the parents…early intervention is key. Sometimes the truth hurts but i wanted to help this child and others have a bright future so I did tell them as well as another teacher talked to the parents too…the parents did get the child tested and my suspicions were correct. The child got services and the last I heard was they were thriving. Other cases too I’ve had children harm teachers and other peers(one child kicked and punched a pregnant teacher in the stomach) and management didn’t kick the child out (again due to didn’t want to loose the tuition) It’s all greed…I know there a probably some good preschools but very few and far between.
Yep and the FIRST things we learn is to tell the parents if we suspect something is not right. Then to have directors tell you not to tell the parents because they don't want to offend the parents and lose money, then the teachers suffer and it makes you feel outnumbered because the kid is like having 3 kids in 1.
Thank you for being honest with the parents. My son is autistic and there’s nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about. I’d rather go for an assessment and be wrong than sit on my hands and deprive my child of the help they need. It’s wild to me that child care providers would be discouraged from monitoring a child’s development and just communicating that to parents. Just proves that money means more to these places than the child’s actual well-being.

The amount they pay childcare workers itself is a crisis a well. We need to hold the government accountable for taking advantage of childcare staff.
As a childcare worker i can explain why.... We are severely understaffed, paid extremely offensive pay, we are taking care of others families but, can't care for our own due to the insulting low wages we receive, the physical exhaustion and mental exhaustion. Teaching is a 24/7 job. No time for lesson planning, no anything. People think we the teachers see that money and it's not the truth. The company sees that money. It's a matter of time before childcare no longer exists.
Daycare is an awful idea to begin with. I worked in one for years, and I will never put my future children in one. Children need their mothers. We need to return to one income households. Your career and lifestyle is not more important than your children.
I’m so happy I just stay home. I love waking up and staying with my babies. I worked just the weekend once and even that was hard.
I loved staying home too. Then inflation hit and my husband’s 45K salary doesn’t cut it for our family of 5 anymore. Now I’m forced to go back to work and I make $250 a month after childcare costs. It’s an impossible situation. I’d love to be home with my kids. Life is wayyyyy more stressful with both of us working. We work partially opposite schedules to cut down on the amount of time our kids spend in daycare and our budget is still so tight. We don’t have a car payment. Our mortgage is less than 25% of our income. We don’t go to Starbucks or eat out or go on date nights or buy anything extra. And it’s not like my husband has a “bad job”. He works as a chemist at a large university.

I understand that money was used to raise wages and give paid time off and some improvements, but they knew the money wasn't going to be permanent. It was supposed to get them through the time where people were pulling children out of daycare and things like that. The one thing I don't understand is when I worked at a daycare center, I was the only teacher in the room of 7 children from when it opened until when it closed. We had a floating teacher that covered for breaks, etc for the rooms and worked part time. So if there are 7 kids paying $800/week, that's $22K per month for 'my room' being paid. I made around $2,500/month before taxes. I'm going to assume the part timer also made around the same hourly so even if all her wages were attributed to 'my room' we're taking $3-4K in staffing costs, if I had qualified for insurance or something, maybe $6-7K in staffing costs per month. So the rest is either going to rent/utilities/supplies or profit for the daycare. Looking at a local daycare, the rent is about $9K a month. Just looking at that, my room covered 100% of rent, my salary, the extra salary and probably utilities as well. I know that there is liability/business insurance and other things as well. But if I was one of 5 rooms, with 6-7 'teachers' on duty, with a ratio average of 1 teacher per 9 kids, how are daycare workers not paid more? without having to increase fees for parents?
Insurance has got to be through the roof though.

They also have to pay for federal background checks for all employees, yearly. Turnover in daycare is high so every time you hire someone new you have that same cost. Plus everyone who applies and then doesn’t pass the background check as well. They also usually have to pay for continuing education requirements for all their employees too. Where I live I think they have to have 12 hours of training per year per employee. CPR recertifications every 3 years for every employee also. Plus the rent (which you mentioned), electricity, water, upkeep and replacement of equipment/toys/art supplies, paper for all the worksheets, food the children eat. Laundry if they provide blankets, towels, etc or supplies if they use disposable products.
They may also be paying for an online system to contact parents, a security system or camera monitoring setup for liability reasons. Whatever service they use to handle payroll and parent billing. Liability insurance which was mentioned in another comment. There’s quite a lot of overhead that goes into running a daycare center.

Yeah, I was paying $300 a week 8 years ago…I lasted 4 months and then decided to stop working when my daughter moved to the toddler room and I didn’t like the teachers there. This was one of the national daycares that was “high quality”. I think it’s better to stay home if you are part of a 2 income family and maybe work part time. Single parents don’t have a choice so I don’t know how they do it 🤷🏾♀️.
My mom had a huge roster of potential babysitters when I was growing up. 😂 I never went to daycare bc she couldn't afford it but I was always safe.
Really the cost of living should be reasonable enough that one parent can stay home.

It’s so messed up that a lot of people in these comment sections have had a bad experience with day care centers not only that but moms can’t seem to afford it due to the very high prices, from what I’ve heard the workers don’t get paid enough either for how much work they’re doing. A solution definitely needs to happen for both parties because while parents have had bad experiences with daycare being rude to the kids, not having a lunch for them already, the cost being high the workers have had bad experiences too with parents abusing the daycare program by picking up the children really late or coming too early, purposely not bringing what is required for their children, purposely not paying the fees either, blaming diaper rashes and bruises on the workers, not cooperating with the daycare workers after the workers worked hard in putting their child on a sleeping schedule, the parents go home and dont follow the schedule and so the hard work gets ruined, I think I can go on and on for both sides, but my issue is seeing some people say that people shouldn’t have kids at all, which I don’t think is the right solution and I see some people saying that childcare should be free or that moms should just watch their children at home, which is perfectly fine,Moms have every right to be stay at home moms and watch their children if they choose too, I’m just concerned about those who have went to college, worked hard for their degree and wanted to make daycare/childcare a career who really loves what they do. Do we not care if the daycare worker goes completely out of work? Why should those working parents who value their careers/jobs keep there’s while advocating for putting childcare owners/workers out of work completely? Not saying parents are the ones solely advocating for this, I’m just saying there’s people out there who’s saying these things. Being a daycare working is hard. (Was one for a short time) the pay is low and the environment is hard. Toddlers can’t regulate their emotions yet. (Not their faults at all!) so it is already high stress. Then you get parents involved??
I remember my worst experience. I was a substitute worker. Meaning I moved from class to class where needed any given day. I went to the infant class and there was one kid trying to pull himself up and learn to walk. The teacher kept removing him from the ledge and setting him back down.
I asked why they were doing that… they said the parents do not want him to be able to walk yet and there are cameras in the classroom. They can see when we aren’t following their instructions… so the teacher had no choice but to stunt the kid’s development… it made them and myself feel sick…

Legit I was walking my fur baby last night and I realized his daycare was 1/6 of a babies. His cost 180/week. Aaaaand that’s a small example of why I’m not having another child (only had one).
When our kids were younger I worked nights and my husband worked days. It was easier for me to work nights because I worked in healthcare and I preferred night shift. It was not easy though losing sleep but it was better than the price of childcare for 2 small children. This was in the early 2000’s and it was nearly $800 mo per child.

My parents did the same in early 2000s. I was never in day care and staying at my aunts filled the gaps in their work schedules. Nowadays thinking about having kids myself I am facing the fact I don't live anywhere near family, neither does my SO, with normal day schedules and fear making it work.

My older brother was the only one of us who was ever in daycare-mom quit to be a mostly SAHM when I was born, and started waiting tables part-time when I was 3 months old so my parents had complementary schedules to each other-dad was a restaurant manager. I teach my kids at home. My daughter is reading on a 4th grade level at age 6. Kids in my local school are at 30% on the standard test for reading. People claim that the solution is more school and starting younger, but my kids and I do "school" about11-15 hours a week. What gives? Public school in not educating our kids. Not at all.
You say that children receive a superior education at home; let's take a closer look at a few different factors. As a teacher, I am aware that, depending on their needs and/or impairments, a large number of pupils gain from home schooling. The majority of students who have professional parents are similar to the students who are more like your kids. One-on-one instruction is the best way to teach. But we simply cannot expect to assign individual teachers to millions of students. I think that education does really begin at home. as someone who works in childcare the cost is crazy for childcare looking at the tuition parents pay always hurts and for those of us who work taking care of the life someone loves and has created themselves with their own body feeding them changing them keeping them safe and happy so their parents can do the same and more at home we barely get minimum wage no PTO and hardly any time off; paid or not leaving us unable to take care of our families or even ourselves as we work during the time most health care offices are open.

I work in a daycare, another issue that we’re facing is the pay. Daycare’s are having trouble keeping employees because they can make more money working at home McDonald’s or anywhere else. The daycare owner has been in business 28 years. How was she managing prior to government pandemic funding? I was a preschool teacher and aid after high school and I loved my job but being severely underpaid and under appreciated made me quit. I would love at the preschool basically. I had my baby and am fortunate to stay home. Im in school right now and my mom watches the baby once I become and RN my mom is going to watch the baby full time and I am so thankful for that.
Man, I'm glad all my kids are school age and I feel bad for parents going through this right now. I remember way back when my two oldest were in daycare on a military base (which was much cheaper than the off-base daycares) and we were complaining about how expensive it was THEN! Then I was a SAHM for several years and went back to work when my youngest was around 4. He went to a home daycare just a few houses down from us 3 days of the week and my mom watched him the other 2. I was so thankful for that because even just the 3 days a week was so expensive!!
We need daycares. They should be federally funded and privately as well. We will always need people to get to work, and someone to watch the kids.
I hope this brings more woman home to care for their children . It would be good for woman for children and for society . Stability in the home. Spend less live cheaper and bless your family.

I say this could be a positive thing people would actually have to raise their children instead of just throw money at a expensive babysitter. This is why you really should look into the people you vote into office. If you don’t know the people who are in office, you don’t know what their true motives are. The US should have universal healthcare and childcare. We the people need to demand change and be careful of who we vote into office.
Universal healthcare will never work, I work in healthcare and there are not enough providers… the US is short one million nurses and thousands of physicians, if we open up healthcare to everyone, wait times will be even worse. Kids that don’t want to be working in healthcare, most are too lazy
It’s tough as your schedule is based off around your children’s when you have kids. Not everyone is able to get help with their kids from families. Even if you have a good paying job doesn’t saving money ever still matter? But I also get the more one makes the more one might spend.
As parents, we make sacrifices even if it isnt the hours/shifts we want. My husband works 3rd shift for the longest while I worked 1st and it isn’t forever and only a few more years until our toddler is in full time school and my husband can possibly work 1st or second shift again.
Hopefully our schedule will be better in a few years and have more family time again.

It's gotten to the point where 1 parent will HAVE to stay at home while 1 works 2 jobs to maintain dual income. And as scary as times have gotten, it's worth it to stay with your child(ren) to keep them safe.

Childcare is to expensive. I pay $630 a week for 2 kids. The center is always low staff because they don't pay a decent wage. So about 2x a month we are asked if we could keep our kids home.
