Do I understand correctly that you can enable V log recording and see a picture with superimposed loot via HDMi? Or does it not work in recording mode?
@@ggdfggdfgdffgfddg34 That's a good question, I don't have the S1 or S1r but I *think that the S1 got it in a firmware update but I don't think the S1r has it. Don't take that as gospel though. It's certainly not a newer feature as I have it on my GH5.
Great vid Steve. Do you have any others on shooting v-log? l'm looking for something that shows the whole process from shooting to setting up in editing. Thanks man
Thank you, appreciate you saying that. I don't at the minute but I am currently working on one that covers the luminance spot meter tool which is really useful. Out of interest, which editing suite do you use?
Hi, I mostly use Premiere Pro, so I am using Lumetri Color. But you don't actually need a 3rd loader for Final Cut X nowadays, you can see how to load them here - support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/final-cut-pro/ver24f966423/10.6/mac/11.5.1#vera3cdf74a5 Hopefully that helps.
I'm sorry for the question but when you apply a lut in vlog... its just applying the lut. Its not actually filming the shot with that lut applied correct. Its just giving you a preview of what it will look like when using that lut in post... am I correct?
No problem at all, yes that's correct, it is just an assist tool for white balance, exposure etc and doesn't bake the LUT into the footage. The final footage will still just be flat V Log footage.
@@laurentiudll That's a very good point, if you are recording over HDMI it can apply it to the footage. I didn't really cover external recording in this video but I probably should have mentioned it.
Great stuff mate. I am a new by to VLOG....been using 'natural' profile up til now. Just wondering your thoughts on trying/ learning VLOG? Um....when I first heard about VLOG and filming with the grey flat profile.....while good for post editing/ grading......was harder to shoot with 'realtime'....with talk of having to change exposure settings/ easy to get wrong etc. I am wondering tho....with the input of the LUT 709 filming in realtime....is VLOG is much the same as filming normally (eg. natural profile) and nothing to be afraid of? Any thoughts? Cheers :-)
Cheers. I like the Natural profile, I feel like it gives a good base image when you don't want to do a lot to the image. I would only really use V-Log if you want to create a specific style in your footage as it is more work. I quite often will shoot in V-Log for client work if the budget allows, as it gives a lot of flexibility in post. If you are going to use it, I would certainly recommend using a base Rec 709 or similar LUT to preview it on the camera. There are links to the free official ones in the description. Also, take a little bit of time to learn how to set the white balance correctly and use tools like the Waveform Monitor and the Luminance Spot Meter. I have a few videos in the works covering some of this. Certainly, nothing to be afraid of, if you are not comfortable using it just play around with it until you get a grasp of exposure and working with it in post. The only thing I would say is if you shoot it with bad exposure and white balance then it is quite hard to recover in post, so just make sure you do have some time working with it before doing anything crucial. It's worth learning as it can really take your footage to another level, I am no V-Log master but you can certainly notice the difference.
@@stevelitton cheers again. ok...its on the radar....but for meantime....i will just get in the swing of things I think with natural. im more focused on storyline/ what shots & framing/ conveying emotion.....than an extra (small?) gain in color grade? ive already stepped it up to 4/5k prores lol! cheers 🙂
@@royaboat5315 No problem. Nice, that's some hefty files! I think if you don't need to really stylise the footage beyond how it looks out of the camera with slight tweaks then I would just stick to the main profiles for now. It does add another layer to your workflow that you may not even need.
Interesting video, thanks to share it. I hope you can answer my precise question. Everybody talk about GH6 and V-Log but no one can tell me how many ISOs it is best to use to get the highest quality using V-Log 4K 10bit 4: 2.2. Thanks for your info.
No, usually only for clients that want a specific look or if I am doing personal projects. I usually stick with natural for quick turnaround projects. It's too much extra work for me to justify just rolling it into costs if the client doesn't want or need it. You can do a lot more with it though and it can look really good if you spend some time working on the files.
@@lnuponom2678 I actually really like the normal profile but sometimes things look a little too over saturated. I feel like natural gives a really clean image and then you can always add a little more colour to it in post if needed. It's all just down to what you are shooting and personal preference. You are spoiled for choice really on profiles.
@@stevelittonmy camera lumix s5 and normally lumix s5 will support import lut to camera, but my camera cant do that just grey out. I tried my own lut color grading from davinci and convert vlt and cant import
In terms of compatibility it looks like it just needs to be 8 characters long for the file name and saved in a compatible file type. Maybe format the card in the camera before trying to add the LUTs? Obviously back it up first. "The following LUT data can be used: - The “.vlt” format, which meets the requirements specified in the “VARICAM 3DLUT REFERENCE MANUAL Rev.1.0” - File names consisting of up to 8 alphanumeric characters (excluding extension) 0 Save the LUT data with a file extension of “.vlt” in the root directory of the card (the folder opened when the card is opened on a PC)."
Thanks for the Video. A few ?s. Are you using auto ISO and exposure compensation? If not, how are you keeping the image on the LCD from blowing out if you are +2 stops as is suggested for V-Log?
I use a 180 degree shutter and then dial in the aperture and ISO manually. If I am shooting V-Log I will be white balancing to a grey card and then using waveform monitor to make sure nothing is too far either way in the main portion of the footage. Hope that helps
@@stevelitton Thanks for reply, followed your vids leading up to the release. I tried one 709 from the links here and exported a custom lut from Davinci in panasonic format. Hey, no problem. Thanks, hope you found them helpful. I am not the best person to offer advice as I don't really use Resolve.
