1. The mouthpiece used is a Theo Wanne Durga 8* metal gp mouthpiece, which comes with its own ligature that fits onto the mouthpiece and is adjustable by a specific tool supplied by Theo Wanne when you purchase. The reeds I use can vary, but I tend to favour either of the Argentinian brands, Gonzalez or Zonda but I am happy using Rico Jazz Select, Hemke, Rico Grand Reserve, Vandoren blue packet or ZZs.
2. You will find that many of the different types of reeds will give different sounds and sometimes, especially if you are in a recording studio, you may find a producer or client asking for a specific sound and there are variances between the brands. It's often worthwhile speaking to your online reed supplier as they often do selection packs with, say, half a dozen different styles in them and that way you can get to try various and see what they can do for you.
Thank you. Gotta new book, 'Creative Saxophone Improvising' and it helped.
Great advice. Thank you!
Thanks great help for me
That's a great lesson. I learnt so much. Are pentatonics and scales the same?
3 Strength wise, i would always use between a 3 to 3.5 reed. Just as an interesting point and if you happen to be watching future videos on this site, you may notice that I have just changed from using this tenor mouthpiece and have actually commissioned a hand built solid silver Morgan Fry mouthpiece. This is not a reflection on the Theo Wanne as it is an excellent mouthpiece but I changed the sax that I use professionally to the Andy Sheppard Autograph series saxophone in the last year or so
4 There is a whole tonal pallet of colours that I wasn't reaching in the saxophone with the Durga mouthpiece, hence the change. As for the ligature, I am busily trying out different models to go with the new solid silver mouthpiece and am trying to decide between the excellent Marc Jean Ligs, made in Canada and available online or the BG universal alto/tenor metal MP jazz ligature. .
To store all the scales in all the keys is essential
5 Both of these brands come in various finishes ie silver, gold plate, metal etc and there are differences in the sounds they will give you. I have always, for many years, been a lover of Rovner ligatures but have found with this mouthpiece that the fabric wrap style is too dark and that's why I am looking at the metal options
Yes Graeme is actually playing a bespoke Signature Custom Raw XS
interesting :D Thanks
Do you have a video on now to subtone on tenor sax?
what's his mouthpiece/reed/ligature?
Is his sax a Mark VI ?
