I first watched this clip when I was about 10 years old as a bonus feature on Tommy's DVD, I was infatuated by the character but he passed into memory for a long time. It turns out I ended up studying John's book 'Spectrum' for my Leaving Cert in 2013 without realising it was the same man. In 2018 I am now entering my final week of lectures of an English Literature degree after being on a long winding road here and have just rediscovered the soul who was guiding me all along the way. R.I.P John Moriarty. The most influential teacher I ever had but never knew ❤️
I'm so grateful to the person who uploaded this, and grateful to Tommy Tiernan because if i wasn't watching his videos on youtube, i wouldn't have known an amazing man like John Moriarty. I've been struggling with my own faith and beliefs lately, and john helped me a lot to reach a peaceful state of mind, and i'm not a Christian i'm a Muslim, so that says so much about John's profound wisdom. Thank you dear fellow human for putting this video out there :)
It was such a shame he didn't stay with us a bit longer. It's so sad the lack of teachers and characters of John's mighty spirit we lack in Ireland these days.
Thank you very much for putting this video up. John Moriarty was a truly unique man who shared a deep and wholly natural wisdom. He has left much to inspire us.
Oh wow such truth he speaks. He took a journey in life that I would not dare dream of. It's so wonderful getting to know his written words and listening to his talks whilst trying to understand his philosophy there is an old Irish proverb sense doesn't come without "before " age.
I love this interview...I had never even heard of John Moriarty before until i watch it as it was an extra on Tommy Tiernan's ''ok baby'' and I can watch it over and over again and each time feel inspired, knowledgeable and fresh minded on what life is really about. Everything John says is totally true(imo)-really rings home to me. Really seemed like a very warm, friendly intelligent, unique and magical individual. Wish I could have been as lucky as Tommy Tiernan to have gotten to meet him!! :)
Hi Conor i have just watched this interview for the 2nd time in 3 years and scrolled down saw and your comment. Well i feel moved to say i am so proud of you and your achievements. Yes Teachers can help us so very much along our way. Albeit they may have the certs though not all have the down to earth teaching ability if you know what i mean? Light and Love Along Your Way.
Thanks for sharing this, I only heard about John Moriarty last night and am so glad to have found this beautiful and profound interview. It is minds like his that offer the opportunity to reflect and re-connect.
His talks are meditative and his wisdom profound, his books are very philosophical and mythological which take a little deconstructing, but he is, in my opinion, a much neglected progressive thinker. I'm a great follower of his work and teachings. I'm delighted you've found him. 😊😊
The way he could draw on I guess biblical reflections and tie them into the now of that moment between Tommy and himself ..really enjoyed that on many levels .we need more of this speak
I have long heard about John Moriarty but this is the first time I have encountered him. What a deep and magical being. One of the old Celtic prest types of character, a bit like Canon Angus MacQueen on Uist who is as much "pagan" (i.e. "country dweller" as distinct from imperialist) as Catholic. Thanks for having made and posted this video.
If it was not for this posting I would not have found an interest in Moriarty's thinking, poetry and philosophy. As I've written in previous comments, there are a few people I would reserve the word 'genius' (in my area of theological philosophy) Kant, Wittgenstein, Cupitt; I would honestly place Moriarty very close to them. His book 'Dreamtime' is brilliant and intellectual, the way he weaves myth, philosophy, theology with a vision of how (wo)man can once again reconnect with nature.
would anybody be good enough to write for me the quote in Irish he said in reference to wildness, and translate it for me? I would be very appreciative. It seemed profound
@@Blainelyne Essentially it is 'Go out and be free" or 'Go outside in it and be the freedom' - The meaning is more nuanced but English doesn't really have those layers of meaning that Gaeilge does.
Divine Ground , our connection with God (whatever that means to people )or with something much larger than ourselves which is difficult to put in words and easier felt than intellectually understood
I always find myself coming back to this interview year to year, I've a feeling John would be disgusted by modern Ireland or more to the point the Irish government today.
There are all these monkeys on a branch trying to bend shadows with the delusional expectation of some inner change. Inner transformation takes courage, resolve and a resolute spirit and in so doing we transform the world - it's overwhelming wickedness, fear, greed, anger and foolishness to courage, wisdom and compassion based on profound respect for the dignity of life - showing what is delusional to be out of whack. "So rich is nature, that nothing it loses is a loss to it." Now if only human beings, and perhaps monkeys too, could be the same. Ashes, to ashes, dust to . . . . . the wind whistles by and the clock ticks . . .
Yeah laois and offaly , the landscape is kind dull , although still not bad . I wonder if you put moriarty in a place like Nebraska in the US what would he make of it .

This is so heart warming, lucky you for studying this great man's work.
How lucky you were
How beautiful. I hope the journey is going well for you.
Fair play
I never heard of that book "Spectrum" is it available to buy?
A huge amount of sanity being talked by a man with a mad haircut. Love this.
Ditto Ken Dodd, no?!
"If the wildness inside of you dies, like, I think you're finished."
"So rich is nature, that nothing it loses is a loss to it" Thank you John.
John Moriarty...poet..writer... philosopher.. Irish gentleman...a wonderful mind...god be good to him
I met John in Connemara as I was running around Ireland in "86 and over the years we spend countless hours sitting by the fire talking.

He mentioned Sufism in a few of his books and Islamic mystics, but it's been a while since I read his books. Hope you're well in these strange times 👍

Holy ground.

The territorial instinct is NOT more powerful than the sex drive.
"Where I am and who I am are hugely bound up in each other."
Absolute Bollocks.
Couldn't agree more...
Not true for either of ye but True for him
I'm not an arbiter of truth but I quite liked the enormity of the entire of the greatest Irish Philosophers work to "absolute bollocks".
