Race 3: BMW M240i vs Jaguar F-Type 400 Sport vs Aston Martin Vantage N430
Race 4: Exhibition lap with the McLaren 570S and Ashley declares his driver's car of the day
In one of our most ambitious video projects yet, we worked with the city of Cape Town to close an incredible road in the farmlands beyond the city. It's always been one of our favourite pieces of tarmac to test cars and now we had it all to ourselves.
We lined up 8 high-performance cars, fired up our very own race-ace Ashley Oldfield and staged three races - this is the second head-to-head featuring the new VW Golf 7.5 GTI and the newly facelifted Toyota 86. For a recap of the first race - The Fiesta ST200 vs Renault Clio RS Lux, click here: • Hillclimb Race 1 - Fie...
The new Golf 7.5 GTI features a small power upgrade to 169 kW and a few exterior tweaks to the bumpers and lights. The inside has been revamped to feel more premium and it exudes a sense of luxury that's hard to match. We hadn't brought it to the hill to look at it though, we wanted to see how fast it could get to the top of our course.
The Toyota 86 is on a hiding to nothing, it can't match the GTI for power and lack more than 150 Nm of torque - critical for climbing hills. But, it's arguably more fun to drive and represents what you could get yourself for R50k less than a GTI.

Totally missing the point... hillclimbs are supposed to be tight and twisty.
This isn't a victory for front wheel drive or hot hatches, it's a victory for turbocharging.
Hill climb with an average speed of over 150km/h? Me thinks not a very good hill-climb
It‘s a drag race...
@@Simon74 not a single tight turn
Not bad for 86, non turbo and no dsg box, of course GTI will be quicker of the mark, Type R?
As a 2019 GTI lover and owner, I was like go GTI go go go you got it baby... the entire race
Twat. 😂
Curious to see the results if the race was on a more twisty, technical course.
04:56 GTi and that country back drop.... Love!!!
GT 86 is a drifting car for driving lovers and pure style.
It is a legend of technology, all japanese cars And it does not have anything to do with a gti because mainly GTI is a different car .
Gt86 is an special car because of its nature, not because of its quantity as owner of a brz I must say that Im very glad and get enjoy of it a lot
Regards
i like both cars but to say they're completely different is wrong. People shopping for 1 I'm sure most often have interest in the other. Both are small cars (same exact length, the 2022 86 is only 200 lb more)
@@ValFinale I’m interested to know which has better reliability in the long run? I know the car with a turbo will be faster but does that accelerate engine wear?
But Dave is just across the road, why does he need a walkie talkie?
This is my favourite comment!
Gti for the W good on ya! Turbo goes a long way vs the N/A 86
Probably the best lap record with natural track.
If only Takumi was driving the 86 with some tofu
Good !. For the chrono, i would like that the Golf was in Manual gearbox rather than a DSG (to be more equitable), and not using the Lunch Control, c'se this this will impact the time, surely you can gain a clear one second or two, may be more.
The race was over even before it started. Just look at the torque figures
I suspect the GTi will end up costing alot more to keep running than the 86, if you look at the money-pit nature of previous GTis
Have owned both... 86 is a fun, balanced, chuckable and very enjoyable drivers car.
The GTI Mk 7 have the best chassis, suspension set up of any small car I have driven, even with the same power and a tighter course i doubt the 86 would trouble the Golf, they just aren't nailed down in the same way.
That said a turbo'd 86 would really get me grinning : )
Great vid
This shootout is a good idea but was horribly executed. This "course" is the equivalent to an airstrip. Hardly any handling requirements and all about top speed. 86 had no chance as on the limit handling is not required on this straight course. Most hp will win. Shock.
And the jcw??
I suspect the difference would be a lot less an a more technical course. But unfortunately...as fun as the 86 platform may be to toss around, it needs more power. 50-75 more HP wouldn't destroy its ethos of being a tossable momentum car. Doesn't need to have Cayman S levels of power but it would be more enjoyable more of the time. You can't carve canyons or tracks every day...but having a more linear torque curve could make your commute more enjoyable.
D Lombana i personally believe it needs an engine with a similar character to the s2000, higher revving and more linear.
Guys you got this completely wrong. A tighter track with more bends would even the playing field and allow the 86 to exhibit the handling performance synonomous with RWD cars. Nevertheless it was good fun to watch.
Oh Baby... I love GT86 style and layout, but it needs more POWER! That spread in crono-time il concerning, makes me think the even the GTD would have won! :O
You only need more Power, if youre an average driver.
the gti should have used michelin primacy hp tyres to be fair :P these tyres slide sooo easily compared to any oem tyres that come with the gti / r. p.s. i own both golf r and 86 and previously owned a gti.
Tires.
I want to see the polo aw gti doing this.
I'm pleased with the 86 performance because most people thought the GTI would win by more time than 3 & 1/2 seconds...
clearly you know nothing about times, 3 and a half seconds is a huge time difference
Ali Makhutle on this very short hill climb, 3 1/2 seconds is a murdering. If it was a real track, the 86 would be lapped after 5 laps
I'm not sure about that... But I'm just saying this because people predicted around 7 seconds, the GTi didn't come close to that prediction at all. I accept that it (GTi) is a very fast car compared to the 86, but I'm very happy with the results.
the answer is torque
Get a new sound editor the audio isn't in sync when the car is moving
been telling my mates my 200 is faster than a toyota from day 1 🤣
That GTI is no joke on the road, what a monster!! Good lawd!....vrrrrrrrphaaaa indeed
Me encanta el Toyota. Propulsión, coupé, bonito...pero tuve el gti mk2, el gti mk2 16v, tengo el mk7 gty y...no lo cambio por nada, ni siquiera por otro más rápido. Si es una leyenda, es por algo
All you guys proved with the front vs real wheel drive match up, was that a front wheel drive hot hatch with more power and way more torgue will beat an under-powered rear wheel drive coupe up a hill. Does not settle anything, come on, I thought you guys were better than this?
Joey Van Der Ross most people in the comments dont know any better unfortunately. The test is heavily skewed in favour of gti.
sounds like a couple of butthurt brz scrubs lmao
86 needs come with turbo, it would gain a lot of customers
Where is the video gti vs clubsport s drag race?
Vey nice my favourite car vw golf i love it
Immigrant? 😂
@@stevenhearnden66racist it will be report it and taking action
@@irfantai3564 guess I was right then? Statement of fact.
Both sound like lawnmowers though.
C'était évident
But what is with this thing of you guys making us wait.. i wanna see how to M240i does, as i wanna get the M140i
Also kinda sucks when you put together Manual vs Automatic cars, where the automatics always has an advantage and we already know who is gonna win, by how isnt all that important to be honest to me.. :D :D
I ddnt think that the 86 would lose this bad!
They manual transmission did not do it any justice. :D :D :D :D
Abulele Kufa I guessed a 1m17 for the Golf, the 86 could have any gearbox on the planet, excluding those with hybrid electric systems in them, and it wouldn't stand a chance. 200NM vs 350NM, even a low pressure turbo on the 86 would give it a fighting chance.
Rolivhuwa Muelelwa the manual transmission is the fastest on the 86 line
Love both these cars. We need to remember that they target different markets. I would love to see Toyota develop a proper hot hatch. Maybe based on the Corolla platform? Come on Toyota you know you can do it ;-)
I feel that the 86 is overpriced for what you get (perceived quality): I think that might be due to the economics involved (supply and demand). It is still a lovely piece of engineering though.
If I had to pick a daily driver between the two I would not think twice about the GTI (apart from the equipment I would pick LOL). The 86 would sit tight in the garage for playtime on the weekends :-)
Thanks for the video Cars.co.za.
Doesn't Toyota have the Corolla Hatch?
Yeh that's not a hillclimb.......
The only thing I would complaint is that the GTI did not get the manual/6 speed gearbox. I know the DSG fanboys will scream their heads off, but nothing beats, nothing is better than a manual gearbox if you want to race. I could have asked my 93 year old grandma to drive the GTI......
Well that was obvious...
And this is why I bought a VW. Who cares that it costs more to maintain or the check engine light comes on at the slightest inconvenience? It is faster and that is what matters.
Ahh thats not fair 86 isn't meant to do that, why didn't you guys do a downhill section with the 86 and see the results that's a momentum car it doesn't have enough torque to overcome the hill.
It's a hillCLIMB, not a hillfall
I like the 86 and I would take that over the GTI every time. Rear wheel drive are still the best near or on the limit. Thanks Cars.co,za very good video. We want to see more please.
Cheslyn Owens 86 is more fun. At the SA festival of motoring I had a passenger lap in the fwd Kia Koup and the New 86. You could feel how well the 86 handles even from the passenger seat, the Kia struggled at the corners. A Gallardo came flying past us on the top straight but in the corners after that we were keeping up on its tail in the 86!
Its one of the best handling cars money can buy. It was developed by Keiichi Tsuchiya. A very respectable and well known race car driver in Japan. He is also the owner of a classic Toyota AE86 the Hachiroku. The new 86 is the spiritual successor of that car. Most people in South Africa are just interested in front wheel drive turbocharged hatchbacks that can race each other from a traffic light. Unfortunately they all missing the point of what a drivers car is suppose to be. Front engine, rear wheel drive.
Gti wil take 86 it no way near that
I have both, the 86 is by far the more involving drive. If you don't need the extra practicality, an easy choice.
Good ! for the chrono, i would like that the Golf was in Manual gearbox (to be more equitable), and not using the Lunch Control, c'se this this will impact the time, surely you can gain a lear second or two, may be more.
GTI for the win!
but if everything is straight, it is unfair to put a 2.0 n/a against a 2.0 turbo on a straight and uphill lol
money on the gti
Toyota 86 needs boost man
The 86 needs a turbo /end
Couldn't agree more
Ryan Smith That's not the POINT of this car
It will make the car beter with supercharger
But again it doesn't need it
Ahmed Moosaji Ahmed Moosaji A stock GTI would still murder a supercharged 86.
WeekEnd133 I doubt it a supercharged 86 can make 200kw easy with more definitely possible
The power to weight ratio would be better than the GTI the 86 is rear wheel drive can put the power down more easily and the weight distribution is also better
unknown name I was actually kidding. But i will note that even with a supercharger, the 86 doesn't really gain that much power. Not even 300whp. The engine in the 86 is the worst engine in the sports car market, even for tuning. It's best to just bag the 86, and buy a used sports car like an E46 M3. The M3 would be way better stock, than a 86 would be with every mod. It would cost the same if not cheaper too. That's what I would do if I was sticking to a RWD driven sports car.
Wow... GTI so bad performance 😲 (for stock base)...
Only similar performance than a Clio RS 200 (in 1st video).
Clio RS 200 : 1mn19s43
Gti (+ DSG !!!) : 1mn18s59
WTF ?
Hmoobthoj Frenchnraug exactly, clio punches way above its weight, and the clio trophy will prob beat the gti
Clio is no Joke ! I purchased the RS Cup couple months ago, amazing car. my 0-100kms/h is quicker than what renault suggests. The Trophy is insane!
FWD hot hatches > RWD
That's not a hillclimb, should be far more twisty..
Clio and Fiesta beat the 86 by 3 seconds. All the excuses aside maybe it's time to turbocharge the 86..
3 yeas later, no. The Clio, yes, the Fiesta no, it was slower...
the 86 is fine the way it is my mate has a GTI I have a 86 stock and my car is faster 90% of the time he is not a great driver and im much better than him at driving the key to the 86 is learning how to use the power it has. I have driven mine hard from day one and it has enough power when used right I can keep up with most V8 holden in a straight line. the GTI is a quick car the 86 is a fun car every time I get out of it I think to myself that is a fun car im glad I own it I have had it since 2014
I love RWD cars and I know you guys chose the wrong car to represent the RWD cars. A BMW 125i is a better pick.
Elisha Mukumba I think they chose the 86 to prove how shitty it really is.
DSG vs Manual? C'mon. And this is not a hill climb lol
Fwd vs rwd
zuger
same price but faster lol
86 is so much bigger of a number than 7.5, and yet it didn't win. That's why I don't buy Toyotas.
You're an absolute imbecile!
thats pathetic for a golf to just marginally beat a clio 200,cant wait to see how the new megane rs eats the gti up using an 1800 turbo engine....
The course is embarrasing. No turns.
It's fat... But it's fast....
What's the point of buying the Toyota 86? Not fast, no engine upgrades. why is it new?
I think the point is not to buy it at all
Siyanda Madlala that's not the POINT of this car
But it would be better with a supercharger
But again it doesn't need it
I'm guessing the negative comments are mostly from robot and straight line "racers" who will never see a track or a twisty lowveld road. They won't get it, they are not the target market and should stick to vrrr pah and park-offs.
Johan P you hit it on the nail
whats the point of paying R500k for a gti? overated and not so fast, not fun to drive, useless as it cant offroad, why not just buy regular golf? or the superhatches A45, RS3, Focus RS if you want speed
no surprise, the Toyota is slow everybody knows that.
first to comment!!! MAMA I MADE IT!!! :D
Every 86 fan argues saying that it doesn't need extra power and its a track car but not everyone can or will go to a track if they buy this car, yet majority of the 86/brz drivers try and race in straights because they see the look of the car an assume its fast (also all 86/brz drivers you see try race you are over confident assholes that always loose) . The people saying they will choose the 86 over the GTI are delusional, the GTI is a better daily, a faster and more luxurious car.
Face it they 86 is an over priced 4 cylinder with no punch but has a good track time, which in everyday driving means fuck all
Jayden Merenda Once again it's all about the handling on the twisties! Who the hell cares about a boring dragrace? Oh maybe drivers that aren't as skilled maybe...
As Colin Mcrae said " Straight roads are for fast cars, turns are for fast drivers". The gt86 got so much better handling around turns while the shitty golf just plows forward cuz of understeer.
clearly havent driven a gti
Jayden Merenda I have driven a fucking golf R and it is quick in a straight line sure, but you don't get the same driving pleasure as in the gt86...
The gt86 got as low or lower center of gravity as a Ferrari 458 which helps a lot in the corners.
The golf gti/R is just a economy car with bigger engine/turbo and stuff to make it go faster. You still wont get a perfectly balanced car around turns.
Seems like you haven't driven the gt86 because everyone that drives it loves it. It's a petrol heads perfect car. If you still cry about power you can easily slam a turbo on it but the original power is plenty enough to have fun.
if you've driven a golf r and a Toyota 86 and you still believe the 86 is better you're 100% delusional
Jayden Merenda You can't really be into cars if you like the golf more... The golf is just a quick economy car while the gt86 is a real sports car. The gt86 got everything you need to have fun...
You are a fucking joke thinking a shitty golf is more fun than a gt86! You can't beat a rwd car with perfect 50:50 weight distribution. Especially not in a front heavy understeery golf...
People don't understand the point of the 86
Only real enthusiast understand it's PURPOSE
Only they know the value of cars of these nature
Ahmed Moosaji there is no value in the 86. Only little kids want them. Go drive a real car and you would hate the 86
WeekEnd133 seems you are the little kid
unknown name just from your response, I know for sure that you've never owned or driven a real sports car.
WeekEnd133 so you're saying a 86 is shit and talk down others who like it just because you have a preference, based on real life or not, doesn't matter. I actually own both of these cars (actually a Leon Cupra with another 120hp on top of this sister GTI) but as a driver, I still prefer the 86 by far, it is far more involving and fun. The original comment is well worded and correct in my eyes. But some just value speed over anything else and it is ok to not like or get the 86, you can just say 'it's not my cuppa' and then we all just get along and life is more pleasant, it's just a car....
PS: I'm 39 years old, and the 86 has owners of all ages, some of them have owned cars you wouldn't believe, so the facts speak against you here too.
onehorsepower it is shit, and I only talk down those who act like the 86 was gods gift to the car world, which seems to be about 70% of 86 owners. People got to be woken up every now and then.
I repeat to all the reluctant americans, europeans and SOUTH AFRICANS, fwd>rwd
More like 246hp>205hp lmao
Actually, more like
bespoke design driver focused sports car >> hottet up shopping trolley
if you listened to the driver comments and are interested in an involving drive rather than stand beside the road staring at a stopwatch....
GTI Thats bad !! for for a normal aspirated car to do a few seconds later than you. 86 keep it up Toyota all the way !! //TRD
Toyota is boss IN GENERAL. EVEN THOUGH ITS A SUBARU BOXER 2L 16V Vs. GTI 2L 16V + TURBO + DSG + SOFTWARE DRIVE OPTIMIZATION. Sorry Germans . Rocket bunny . Its weak
even a 1995 sti 200 sentra will kill this mk7.5
Why are you always comparing uncomparable cars? They are not priced and powered evenly.and worse you brought a gti with auto trans...it doesnt make any sense at all.the gti must be compared to ford ST or Renault Rs or Opel Opc(2.0FWD cars)..guys cars.co za wont go international with this vids..and you only hit what 100k subscribers and you celebrate?please get a new producer or something to boost this channel.
Possible the worst test channel Ive ever seen
Toyota are just kak. Boring as fuck, not made for speed made for the economy!
Dean Mohamed Haha you got it all wrong! The Toyota is a pure sports car while the golf is an economy car with bigger turbo...
The Toyota got 50:50 weight distribution which gives it excellent handling. Beats the golf in the turns easily! This test was only about top speed which offcorse the golf will win because of the turbo...
Johnny Walker lol lol, it is cheaper than the golf, but jeez it feels so light, I just dunno, it doesn't turn me on I'm afraid! Now the gti, well that gets me all hot and bothered! If you know what I mean! Lol
Dean Mohamed The other way around for me... I mean you can't really use the power on the streets without loosing your license.
The 86 is fun because you can play around with the back end and have fun in corners. The 86 kind of is the perfect car, only thing is the power that some people complain about. Good thing is that the car is tuner friendly and you can add turbo or supercharger.
If the car would had turbo from the factory it would be way more expensive which would mean that less people would buy it...
