  • How to attach spaulders to a late 14th, early 15th century English style arm harness.
Spaulders are something that are easily cheated and skimped upon in the construction of the harness. Seen as simply the shoulderthe defence, they are so much more, properly made they look elegant and enable the shoulder to rotate and move through its full range of movement with no hindrance; improperly done they look awful and impinge movement making many movements impossible to do.
This video is Part 2 of a series based around the English arm harness and it's attached spaulders, but for some reason the firt part has been lost from my camera as I transferred the files, so I will need to do the construction part again on the next English arms I do .. not sure what happened there.
There's still enough of a skill attaching spaulders to warrant a video, at least in my opinion. :)

Who are the other 3,000 fools that watch this and don't like it?

Great as always, however I just assembled a shoulder in the same style, incorrectly, was wondering how I should fix it and I'm now cross as to how easy it is.

Thanks for the awesome video. I'll use some of these tips for my next set of shoulders I'm about to make.

Thanks! This is a process that I can easily get confused about, so I appreciate your clear, calm approach, without getting caught up in tiny measurements. (Also, I was doing this process backwards, starting with the spaulder plate and working down! This makes so much more sense.) Gav

I know that some folk enjoy the measurements game and make nice armour doing it, but with care and experience the eye can be a good measure ... in a lot of cases.

How do you normally go about mounting these things to a shoulder? (to wear it)

What's the thickness/type of the leather strapping you're using?

Off the top of my head, but I tend to use 4-5mm veg tan for the straps. I will dig up the real details later and try and post them here, if I haven't in a couple of days, give me a nudge :)
