I love the way Gavin introduces the awesome model Clovey. Make the model feel so comfortable, proud and valuable. In fact, so much depends on a model. A good model can make ordinary photo look extra ordinary. Clovey is one of them.
High Key and shadow play (your last video I watched) was exactly what I was looking for today. Thanks for making great videos. I would like to see Low Key color n BW..
So much preparation left off-record. What an amazing background! As always Gavin does a terrific explanation on how to get a nice photo. I also wait for flash-on-location videos as the summer weather allows
I like your ATTITUDE! I learn so much from your videos. You're the BEST presenter on this channel. I love it! Can you please do a step by step on how to shoot tethered? Thanks for teaching! 🎓
Hi Marcus. Thanks for the kind words. I made a tethering video for Olympus UK a year or so back. The trouble with is tethering (other than the USB cable bit) there's a lot of camera specific variables.
I like that idea. I've always just made it 1 stop brighter than the main light on my subject. That makes sure it's definitely going to be white, but not so bright it blows out my subject. I'm gonna try this way though to see which I like better. :-)
Gavin I will add that Art in general is not a set of rules that someone needs to follow rather existance of guideliness that help build the basis of it
Hi Josh. If you mean the front and back of head flash readings that's what years of practice and countless hours of experience looks like in one clip 😁
Is it weird that I waved back at Chloe when she waved? When someone waves, I wave back... Until I realized that I was alone hahahaha. I definitely need to take more high key portraits. This should be fun! Maybe I'll even tag you on IG when I do it Gavin!!
Thank you for such useful advice! It would be great to know how you shoot tethered with Olympus and iPad and which other options are available. C1 isn’t an option unfortunately :(
I'm curious what monitor/tablet that's on the stand in the background? Is that an iPad or something else? I can't see anything in the gear list in the description.
Most likely not, unless your speedlights got 200W/300W power :) Lets say your speedlights are 50W, then the 200W @ 1/4 would be 1/1 for the speedlight. So when he says 1/8, that would mean 1/2 for you and 1/16 would be 1/4 for you. But everything is depending on your speedlight power. Ad200pro: 1/1 = 200W 1/2 = 100W 1/4 = 50W 1/8 = 25W 1/16 = 12.5W 1/32 = 6.25W 1/64 = 3.125W 1/128 = 1.5625 1/256 = 0.78125W But my best advice would be to meter your own light if you dont have a 200 or 300. Another thing is you can match his 200W with your 50W if you turn your ISO up to 800. Then the 50W will in theory work as a 200W, but then you might get ambient light aswell. Another factor that plays a huge role is distance; how far away your lights are. There's a lot in play, so when he says 1/8 and 1/16 its all relativly.
the glasses was you worst touch Gav....sorry... must admit tho you are the best by far. I am doing portraits as you teach and they are coming out FAB.. thank you...
Hi Pooja. The Sekonic L-308 supports any flash as they're no radio system built in. All you do is press a button on the L-308 to prime it, fire the flash with the test button and take a reading.
@@GavinHoey Sir, when buying, the distributor says that these meters do not support for godox ad200 and godox flash, for that you have to buy sekonic l-858d.
@@poojabakery8735 It depends on what you mean "supports". The L-308 doesn't have any radio transmitter built in so it doesn't "support" any flashes. And yet it works with every flash in its own basic way.
The Sekonic L-858D-U with RT-GX module offers radio triggering for Godox and it offers high speed sync metering as well. It is pricey. That said, for basic functionality the L-308 will measure the flash output of any Godox (or other) flash when the meter is used in cordless flash mode and when the flash is not in HSS mode.
Sir my studio has different lights like simpex 300d and elinchrom rx400 and godox ad200 pro, so suggest me light meter that supports hss support for all these lights.
You cannot use a hand-held incident flash meter to read H.S.S. It will not work because the strobe lights will flash many times, not just once. You can only use the hand-held incident flash meter to measure the light WITHOUT H.S.S. If you are using H.S.S. on your strobe lights, set your camera on T.T.L. mode.
The Sekonic L-858D-U supports HSS. It's an expensive meter, but so far as I know, it is the only one to date (Spring 2022) that does HSS. As I look at it, the L-858 is a long term investment. It has both incident and spot metering, allows for profiling to individual cameras, visually displays dynamic range and also measures flash duration in both T.5 and T.1. If you're a video shooter it also has a wide range of video options as well. Many, myself included, view this as a lifetime meter.
I know you are probably too busy to read all the comments and less to answer, but I'll give it a go. I tried to replicate this kind of portrait, but in post, the outcome was little bit like dead body skin tone, or it wasn't washed out at all. What might be a problem?

A question about how you tether to your tablet, what software do you use ?
Hi Gregory. I use Olympus capture to run the tethering from my OM-1 Mark iii to my Lenovo Miix
@@GavinHoey Thanks
Thanks Gavin. But how do I get the white background to appear crisp white if I don't have a second light?
There are workarounds involving backlighting and reflectors at the front. But in my experience it's really a two or more lighting set up .
@@GavinHoey Ok fair enough. Thanks for the prompt reply Gavin
How big is your home studio, I was not sure if it was an extension garage or a separate room being used for your home studio?
The studio is 15x17 feet but some of that space is taken up with a kitchen area. Factor in the space for the video gear and I'm around 15 X 12 feet.
