I think ultimately what scared me the most about the demon behind dad scene was the fact that in your typical horror movies, nothing scary happens during the day.. You feel safe and protected by light and expect scares in the dark/night, but when he broke that trope, it shakes you and now you question what "safe" is in a horror film. Great job James. also: fuck you Hunter that jump scare actually got me
You know what got me about the demon behind dad bit? I was coming down the stairs and saw my mom and step-dad watching Insidious. I did not know it was a horror movie though. After all, they were a small family sitting in a living room talking. I asked them if it was the *local news*. They didn't respond. So for a few seconds, I thought they were watching some interview on TV. Then the fucking demon pops out from behind the dad and I nearly shat my pants.
@@samsizer2919 Jesus christ, I am so sorry you went through that LOL. My ass got a little sweaty just thinking about what kid-me would have done in that situation.

The scariest thing I remember when seeing the first one in theaters was the soundtrack, love how unsettling it is and that was nothing I was used to in the horror genre.
I loved the first one so much i saw it twice in theater. was really disappointed with the 2nd. But the way the first one lingered with jump scares, i really enjoyed. I felt like they built up to good portion of them well.
100% agree about the soundtrack. The composer Wan works with on most of his films actually plays a lot of the demons or ghosts or whatever in the films. He played Bathsheba in The Conjuring and the Darth Maul demon in Insidious. But yeah, that dude makes the most unsettling music.
I agree about the red demon. The thing that was scary about it was it lurking in the shadows and just being a dark figure with a minimalist design. the added details really made it look cartoony

Yeah. For very long time I thought Insidious was directed by the same guy as Sinister as both movies start up on very high note and completely mess up the last minutes. Same with Black Phone. It's so sad because both movies are my favorite creature horror movies till today but at the end I really feal grinding my teeth. The ending itself of Insidious is very good I think but that whole lipstick demon chase scene just ruins it. I really love the slow jumpscares of Insidious because they feel way more intense and well curated even having rewatches in mind, like the guy at the crib or the child standing between the jackets just to get scrolled over. But the lipstick demon lived from beeing shapeshifty and dreamy than beeing based on reality... Showing it in entirety as a CGI mess after they just tingled around it in the nail grinding scene is such a failure
I honestly think the first movie is a great horror movie, the jumpscares were pretty annoying, but they used a lot of good ideas with their horror, you can sometimes see entities in the background of a bunch of scenes that the characters rarely notice, i remember growing up and seeing the ghost behind the baby crib as the mother walks in, it terrified tf out of me
Her possessed dad who abused her growing up finally being able to break his possession just enough to protect her from the demon at the end was a much better moment than the mom coming out of nowhere and 1 hit killing the demon. And then Elise proceeds to talk so much about how her mom is some angel to her and not even mentioning the dad lmao. Like. . . Come on
@bunny-dl2fi The whole point of the movie was that the demon was possessing these normal men into doing it's bidding tho. It wasn't the dad abusing them, it was a demon. This is a horror movie
I remember seeing the First Insidious in theaters when I was younger and being absolutely *TERRIFIED* of that scene where the Red face demon with the yellow eyes is standing right behind the Dad hissing or whatever the f**k he was doing, Ngl nothing else in that movie SHOOK me more then that scene. 😅
If I remember correctly he wasn't making any noise? That is embedded in my memory because there was a lot of pulling away from monsters in like half a millisecond in other movies of the time. And they really even though it was still short they lingered a little longer than normal and it helped really cement the terror of that moment in my head.
@@notoriousgoblin83I came to the comments to say this. As soon as I saw him the movie immediately wasn’t scary anymore since he was just “Darth Meth” to me

So glad to see someone else with the Last Key being the top dawg in this franchise. I felt like it really hit its stride in pacing and also plot. The script and odd take choices are still present but I like the demon design and Elise's backstory is haunting as hell
whatever your preferences, 4th should never be first. Third is dumb but at least it has some funny moments, the girl is cute and the ghost is scary. "The last key" is some Lifetime afternoon movie with an old woman reminiscing about her childhood. I don't need that. Elise already had drama in her life, the tragic passing of her husband, i don't need her to have a messed up past. Also, it's super weird how Specs and Tucker, who look like they are pushing 40 to be generous, behave like 16 yo teens near Elise nieces and awkwardly flirt with them. Seriously? They were nerds with a somewhat succesful youtube channel in the third one, they've seen some stuff after they started working with Elise. They're not bumbling idiots. Where are those girls in the other movies? Never mentioned once. Elise's niece can go in the elsewhere too, ask for her help. The key idea is cool, but the demon is far from scary, it's just a tall guy with dirty hair..
I just watched the 1,2,3 and 4th movies (in a day yes i dont have a life) and i share the same feeling that the first 2 movies complete each other, and i think you should watch them back to back to enjoy the story, even though the movies arent perfect in anyway. As someone who watched them later, not in theater but after the 4th was already out, i really gotta agree with meat canyon with him putting the fourth movie as the best. I still gotta watch the last one but im not eager cause its about the lambert again and Elise is just the one that carried the whole franchise.
@bunny-dl2fi why? She was at least 18 at the time and she has the most screentime. Should i watch a movie with an ugly protagonist instead? Is there something wrong with being a good looking woman? It's not like the movie has much more to offer. The ghost is kind of cool, but the rest is very formulaic.

Hunter’s (what I can only describe as) Leigh Whannell erasure in this and the Saw video is comedic. “The frumpy guy with glasses” “Adam I forget his last name it’s not important” bro he’s like… James Wan’s bestie. he literally wrote this shit 😭
oh god i thought the same thing!! i think leigh directed one of these movies too 😭😭 i get james is the bigger name but both of them are attached to these franchises and they did a lot (most?) of the interviews for them together lol. and have talked a million times about meeting in film school and making the stories as a team and anyway. absolutely criminal erasure. there was this cute blog post where leigh talked about the years they worked together so fondly and it was really sweet give my man a name drop ☹️
Watching this made me realize something, ever since seeing Insidious my brain forgot everything about it, including the plot. If you asked me yesterday what the movie was I'd say it was about the monster wanting the family dead so he could take the kids. Sinister. That's Sinister.

The most scary part was when Hunters ,,what ever it was,, fell. I shit and pissed myself. Edit: you mother… the Jump-scare made me shit and piss myself even harder!
Papa Meat is a master of his craft. Knows what elements make good film, knows how to articulate his thoughts, and knows how to be naturally funnier than every late night show writer combined
In one of the podcast episodes he does with Noel they do mention him being in a band a long time ago, but he’s embarrassed by it so I don’t think he said the name of it. Lol I think he said it’s on UA-cam if you can find it.
I love James Wan personally I think he’s one of the best horror directors making Insidious, The Conjuring, The Conjuring 2, I believe he helped with Saw and also Malignant which isn’t the best film but it’s very unique he also did a great job with Aquaman so he is up there for me
I'll never forget when i saw the first one in the theater. When they first show the monster a guy screamed out "oh fuck darth maul with hair!" He seemed scared when he said it but me and my friend started crying in laughter.
Darth maul with hair, and a bunch of scabs lol Idk, maybe if I saw it in theater and actually felt absorbed by it, it would have caught me, but I recall barely even noticing it the first time I saw it, then when I went back later it looked so CGI'd in(I don't think it was, but it has a weird contrast to everything else) I could never take it seriously.
The best part of the entire series is in Insidious 2 when he chucks the tea kettle at her when they’re fighting in the kitchen and it nails her from across the room making the funniest *ding* sound
I think the bird dude was supposed to be someone who died in a fire in the apartment above her or something. Theres a lot of smoke tar and coughing with him struggling to breathe.
Part 2 made me physically ill. It was the church chapel filled with corpses. Something about the little boy and that insane screeching woman that I found completely disconcerting. I remember feeling horrified for real. Which is fairly impossible for me. I was in a coma for an extended period. Some of what they show I saw a version of before this movie came out. Maybe that is the difference. I was in a coma three years before the movie was released.

Mr. Meat has great humor and great talking voice. But the thing that really makes it all come together is the editing, the sound bites and video clips. It makes it extra good and funny. So shout out to the editor.
My favorite part of the insidious movies was when the boy tells him to turn around and then it shows a red building the demon sharpening the blades on his fingers while playing tip toe through the tulips
The first Insidious movie had a fantastic sound design and atmosphere. It had creepy violins and shit and it was really fucking loud. I thought it was fantastic. My favorite part was with the old lady with the weed stormtrooper helmet to communicate with spirits.
Insidious makes their heart beats raise so much because they fill the movies with cheap jump scares. If you remove the jump scares there is almost no horror.
Dude! I love Insidious 2! It’s my favourite! If anything 1 and 2 just flow into one movie, yeah 2 was stupid but in a super entertaining and fun way, I didn’t care for 3 and I completely forgot about the one you put as the best one 😂
Cool bug fact: the movie Red Dragon that @PapaMeat mentions is actually a remake of the movie Manhunter which is the first movie in the Silence of the Lambs series. Everyone forgets about that film.
My favorite series was Insidious because astro projection seemed creative as a form of horror. This was assessed well & fair. I still love Insidious & will watch The Red Dork when it comes out. I'm glad Papa Meat covered this series. :)

I love the concept, I loved the way it was filmed, and I loved the antagonist design. The whole time I was watching it I was thinking "this is fucking weird and I love it!"
Going back into the video catalogue here to watch vids I wasnt around to see back before i subed. And I have to say, really high quality editing and work over all back then too. He hasnt lost the ability to control fire even one bit!
I would love to see him do reviews for the conjuring series and Anabelle. Frickin halarious on his interpretation
Big Papa: "People can sense when a jump scare is coming" Me: Flying back in my seat
i could listen to daddy talk about horror films all day
I could stare into those hauntingly beautiful hazel eyes 👀 all day
He's your father too....?
im not religious at all, but i had a friend in highschool who's dad was a preacher, and he said insidious depicted demons in the most accurate way he'd ever seen. it still scares me to think about
Think your friends dad needs to be on some meds lmao. Religious or not he’s hallucinating
It's always a great day when Papa uploads.
The most scary part was when Hunters ,,what ever it was,, fell. I shit and pissed myself.
Edit: you mother… the Jump-scare made me shit and piss myself even harder!
I gotta know, where can I find the "yeah!" audio clip at 0:05?
It’s from the Eric Andre Show. Just lookup the yeah scream from that show
creaking door LOUD NOISE creaking noise LOUD NOISE VIOLIN SCREECHING is the most accurate description to the insidious stories
Papa Meat is a master of his craft. Knows what elements make good film, knows how to articulate his thoughts, and knows how to be naturally funnier than every late night show writer combined
As a public school teacher I can confirm we do make 7 million dollars a year and are haunted by a drag queen ghost with mother issues.
Keep these videos coming, dawg. We love them. Also, the editing is perfection!
6:30
Elise: Show yourself!
Demon: * Shows itself *
Elise: DON'T FUCKING SCARE ME LIKE THAT, GOD-
“I’m gonna do that again” killed me💀
I didn’t realize how much the old lady gets strangled in the movies 😂😂 now I can’t unsee the hilarity of it.
Idk if it’s ever been mentioned by him but is hunter the vocalist in a metal band? Or was he ever? His growls are genuinely good lol
In one of the podcast episodes he does with Noel they do mention him being in a band a long time ago, but he’s embarrassed by it so I don’t think he said the name of it. Lol I think he said it’s on UA-cam if you can find it.
watch?v=FMSuERp8Cp0 yeah i just looked it up, this is one
Hereditary was the scariest movie based on that heart rate thing I thought.
I love James Wan personally I think he’s one of the best horror directors making Insidious, The Conjuring, The Conjuring 2, I believe he helped with Saw and also Malignant which isn’t the best film but it’s very unique he also did a great job with Aquaman so he is up there for me
i’ve seen binged all these movies twice and had literally no memory of the third movie
I'll never forget when i saw the first one in the theater. When they first show the monster a guy screamed out "oh fuck darth maul with hair!" He seemed scared when he said it but me and my friend started crying in laughter.
Darth maul with hair, and a bunch of scabs lol
Idk, maybe if I saw it in theater and actually felt absorbed by it, it would have caught me, but I recall barely even noticing it the first time I saw it, then when I went back later it looked so CGI'd in(I don't think it was, but it has a weird contrast to everything else) I could never take it seriously.
The best part of the entire series is in Insidious 2 when he chucks the tea kettle at her when they’re fighting in the kitchen and it nails her from across the room making the funniest *ding* sound
I absolutely love these ranking horror movie videos. Keep it up papa meat!
Loving the Steve Harvey going 😟 in the background the whole duration of the video
I think the bird dude was supposed to be someone who died in a fire in the apartment above her or something. Theres a lot of smoke tar and coughing with him struggling to breathe.
The scariest part is that Darth Maul listens to Tiny Tim, that shit's terrifying...
Dude that beeping during the ad almost gave me a heart attack
6:20 that overused sound is a waterphone played with a bow, if you watch Hell's Kitchen it's played every 5 seconds
Malignant quickly became one of my favorite horror movies. A video about it from you would be amazing!
The devil guy is just straight up darth maul from star wars
How so?
The devil in the movies look like Darth Maul.
idk what scared me more, the actual jump scare or the Andrew tate jump scares 😂
22:30 I saw that Tate reference ;) Love ya Papa Meat, always love watching Tate get dunked on.
22:56 Didn't know you were going to do it twice. Vaguely embarrassed now.
As always his editors are on point!
Papa Meat is one of the few youtubers who’s takes I consistently disagree with, but i still consistently watch and enjoy.
I think Sinister is considered the scariest movie isn’t it?
That movie was way scarier than Insidious. Those old film reels were terrifying by themselves.
@@KerReeeee Definitely, the creepy music and audio really helped.
The “home movies” never fail to get my hair standing on end 😁
The alarm at Insidious going off made my heart rate double thinking it was time to wake up
I remember the first movie scaring the shit out of everyone and establishing really cool rules for the ghost realm but then they just blew it
Thank you for pointing out the super expensive house for a public school teacher with a family. I watched it with my family and none of us could get past that. We had spirited debates about home values in California. Someone even broke into Zillow.
I LOVE INSIDIOUS THE LAST KEY, I sat down on a rainy night to just watch it and fell in love with the old woman actress. I also love how to it ended ❤ Made know that they were going to make a sequel 😊
Mr. Meat has great humor and great talking voice. But the thing that really makes it all come together is the editing, the sound bites and video clips. It makes it extra good and funny. So shout out to the editor.
We finally understand the reason of Steve Harvey in the background
My favorite part of the insidious movies was when the boy tells him to turn around and then it shows a red building the demon sharpening the blades on his fingers while playing tip toe through the tulips
The first Insidious movie had a fantastic sound design and atmosphere. It had creepy violins and shit and it was really fucking loud. I thought it was fantastic. My favorite part was with the old lady with the weed stormtrooper helmet to communicate with spirits.
Insidious makes their heart beats raise so much because they fill the movies with cheap jump scares. If you remove the jump scares there is almost no horror.
You should do a video on Dead Silence. I think it would be hilarious to watch you review that since it's another James Wan movie.
After watching the Red Door and hearing Papa Mest say "it can't be worse than 3".....oh buddy
I would love to hear Papa’s all time favorite horror movies ranked
"You can exist with half a soul I'd imagine"
-Papa Meat
My favorite series was Insidious because astro projection seemed creative as a form of horror. This was assessed well & fair. I still love Insidious & will watch The Red Dork when it comes out. I'm glad Papa Meat covered this series. :)
Astral projection, dude. It's not an old minivan, lmao
@@Hawk7886 I'm so sorry I mistyped, thank you thank you
Forgive me Father for I have sinned, it's been 8 weeks since my last confession... lol
That Jay Cutler foot stomp clip was so pleasantly unexpected
Now rank all the conjuring movies .
3:57 “it’s big mama’s house: the horror movie”😂😂😂
Meat is like an uncle who visits you once in a while, cheers you up and gives you gifts
this literally has nothing to do with the video and y’all don’t believe he’s a bot?
The devil from Insidious 1 kind of looks like Darth Maul but has crippling addiction to Crystal Meth.
bro that’s what i thought the guy from star wars especially when he was behind the grandmother
The "frumpy guy in glasses" is Leigh Whannell who screenwrote both Saw and Insidious 1 & 2.
