Absolutely LOVED this video. Melee duelling is completely unknown territory for me (or should I say foreign), but I love that there is a place where insane rare and crafted items have a home.
Because even though it was updated a lot recently, it's based on the original which was made when studios were trying to make games, not monetization models. And even in that golden era, this is a game that stood out. And despite updates, Blizzard has miraculously let this game off the hook without infecting it with monetization, probably thinking something along the lines of "we will leave this game pure so that it keeps our reputation somewhat intact". Today's gaming industry can't even hope to recreate such a masterpiece.

Yeah, this shows how awesome D2's itemization truly is! :) Oh, and the hit chance calculation.. level matters a lot less the higher in level you get, so for this end game dueling it doesn't matter much, but for the majority of players it's the reason they don't land their attacks

Watching this brings back memories and makes me want to play again... But I'm still pissed at myself for not selling my LoD items when I had the chance. 3x fully kitted characters with 451s and 32020s. 5x hybrid runewords and a ton of GG rare and crafted PvP gear. I'm not investing that all over from nothing, especially when I had the opportunity for a headstart by selling. Love ya Cooley. I'm gonna hop on this weekend just to see where I left off

I won the Season 2 PD2 melee dueling tournament. (yes, there's a melee dueling community on PD2 also) I've got a zealot on NL D2R if you wanna go.

Way way back in the long ago times I use to do stuff like this. Many things in this video are true. EDC is trash, always has been. Death runeword is a very good weapon but it drops you down to a lower breakpoint, as suggested in this video. Whatever RW went into the vortex shields were also bad. Phoenix was good. I remember doing the math and you needed to get like a 3soc visionary (120/45) for EDZ to reach the final BP. Still not sure if that's possible to this day, but I always remember 2soc visionaries being possible. This was also generally my experience though. There were very few things that beat the EDZ setup.
The thing is the reason why grief is banned in melee duels is because of the venom. . . Melee duels take a minute of swining. So if someone's poisoned and rng doesn't end it, the unpoisoned person has a massive advantage. It has nothing to do with it being 2 good.
This makes me miss my old fury druid from D2, I always ran EBOTDZ because I was way to poor to afford a decent rare fury weapon. Since fury only gains IAS from the weapon on a zerker 60ias was a must.
I just don't understand why Blizzard couldn't capture the essence of Diablo 2 with Diablo 4. Videos like these are great and show how deep it was for an ARPG. Anyway keep up the good content Coooley!

diablo 2 LOD has incredible itemization, leagues above d3 and d4, i played the crap out of d2 from 2000-2010’ish, it’s so ingrained in my brain that even without having played the game in nearly 15 years i still remeber how to build almost every character and spec , the game is incredible and has aged so well especially with the releasing of resurrected

I wonder from time to time whatever happened to the guys I used to grind with. We were some of the most dedicated people I’ve ever seen. If only I could manage that same application to anything else in life …
When i was 12 i joined a private server that was basically only melee duels with perfect crafter gear. All gear was "legit" but you didnt have to farm for them just roll for hours, good times
Man, this was awesome. My first ever character was a Zealer. Then years later when I was rich and good at the game, I made another with gear about 90% as good as this. Meaning like 10% of the value or less. Those last 10% mean everything XD
You cant have games like this anymore. Everything is constantly changing and being updated in newer games so none of them will ever be allowed to age like D2. If things aren't constantly changing people complain and devs cave to the cries of the masses. This is why D3, D4 and every other wannabe D2 will never see this kind of committed player base. D2 really is special.
It's amazing how much more depth this decades old game has compared to D4. This is peak itemization.

I remember (trying) to build a melee dueler back in 1.10, and man it was expensive. I gave that up and shifted to normal duelers pretty quickly.
D2's itemization remains unmatched. Been playing Last Epoch and it's absolutely amazing, but D2's depth is unmatched.

Specifically, it was implemented for BvB whirlwind fights, and it became standard across all melee duels over time.
Also vamps are considered bm. This build wouldn't fly in the actual ladder.

in all class melee leagues, yes. but today in zeal vs zeal it is unbanned in D2R
