  • In episode 230 astrologer Jessica Lanyadoo joins the podcast to talk about astrology and relationships, and some of the work she has done in adapting the subject to the realities of modern times.
Jessica is the host of the popular Ghost of a Podcast, and is the author of the forthcoming book Astrology for Real Relationships: Understanding You, Me, and How We All Get Along:
    www.lovelanyado...
    amzn.to/3309YWG
In the first part of the show we sat down to talk about her new book, and to address the question of if astrology is always a reflection of the culture, social sensibilities, and time period in which it is practiced, then in what ways did astrology need to change recently in order to adapt to the sensibilities of practitioners living in modern western times?
Later in the show we answer some questions about astrology and relationships that were sent in by listeners.
This episode is available in both audio and video versions on the podcast website:
    theastrologypod...
    -- Relationship Astrology Questions --
Here are some of the questions we answered from listeners, most of which came from Twitter:
Catherine Urban (@AstroCatherine): Sometimes couples think it would be fun to get a reading together. Thoughts?
Diana Rose (@ddamascenaa): WHEN is it actually beneficial to look at a beloved's birth chart, synastry, composite, etc.? I feel like a lot of people will pre-emptively investigate these things -- like before the first date -- and end up making wildly incorrect assumptions before they've even met.
Advice Astrologer (@AdvAstrologer): I would love to know what you guys prefer to use (Davison or composite) and why. I'm [also] curious about what you all think of, "twin flames," …
Richelle Steyn (@roshbon): How to identify and navigate ‘soul mates’ and karmic relationships.
Rob Bailey (@oldschoolastro): How do you feel about the concept of “sister signs” as it pertains to relationship astrology or synastry?
Allyse (@ayyy_lease): What is the biggest mistake most people make with relationship astrology? What are the common place myths that too many people fall for?
MagicalForge (@OfHadad): Manifestations of relationship inequities in "knowing someone" when an astrologer/student studies the chart of a potential partner before they form a deep relationship.
💫 (@astrogrIz): I would love to hear more about relationships in astrology specifically looking at queer relationships! This is more of a topic than a question but I hope they are able to touch a bit on it
    Ash Bash (@astro_ashley11): Marriage elections!
𝟟𝟚𝟙 (@ayanatheoracle): Could you talk about the history of whoever decided that astrological compatibility was strictly based on the element of the sun sign
chelsea (@aeslehcothtrae): i’m curious about what is in store for those folks entering their saturn return single, in regards to relationships! should we avoid dating? or do you have any tips/suggestions for dating during your saturn return?

Hello! I live in France and would love to order this book but I am boycotting amazon because they sell real fur (here in France anyway, but they have also been caught selling real fur as fake fur in the UK). Is there anyway to order the book in Europe that is not Amazon? I can order from Barnes and Noble in the US but shipping is very expensive... thanks in advance if there are any European websites, like astrology booksellers, that sell it.

I entered into a 12 year relationship during my Saturn return, with someone who has proven to be a very Saturnian influence on my life (his moon is in Capricorn and his natal Saturn is in my second house. My natal Saturn is in the 4th. We moved in together six months after meeting. I also have Capricorn on my seventh house, which Saturn is NOW transiting, coincidentally signifying not only that relationships end but its....transformation. ANYWAYS. Such a delightful episode, I want to buy a copy of Jessicas book for my nearest and dearest!

I’m late coming to the comments. In regards to Jessica’s opinion about not looking at a partner’s birth chart placements until you actually know them. This makes sense, but here’s my rebuttal to that: I have had terrible and dead end relationships for decades. Now that I’ve discovered astrology, I feel like I now have a guide to avoid the pitfalls that I couldn’t seem to avoid before. Thoughts?

I greatly appreciate the points raised in this discussion pertaining to the ethics of astrology readings. In my process of learning to read charts I gathered birth data of friends and family and stumbled across some of the situations mentioned in this discussion early on. My experiences caused me to come to the decision that despite the popular disclaimer “for entertainment purposes only” I still need to always heed caution and move in wisdom with the information provided during readings. I accepted that the information I provide impacts lives resulting in an ethical responsibility that I never need to forget.

I didn't like it at all. I love Chris's videos. This was one of my least favorite episodes. Chris I love you to pieces, but clearly this was a Scorpio Stellium and Scorpio in the first house with Pluto. Sex for me is about intimacy. It isn't about an animalistic activity. I am extremely uncomfortable about how she is framing a woman's sexual role. These ideas are what is shaping todays culture. I ASK YOU ARE WOMEN HAPPIER TODAY THAN THEY WERE 30 YEARS AGO! A true answer, are women happy because they are having random, non monogamous sex? Does sex make a woman happy or does connection, intimacy and a covenant with a partner bring her happiness.

My personal perspective is that all of the major house systems are valid and show different areas or different levels of people and their lives. My experience has been that different house systems will resonate for me at different points, and it's because there's something there for me to learn or heal at that particular point in my life, so I say, "If it resonates, it means there's something there for you." And that can change. 2:12:58

Hello there...both of you are great!!! I like what's coming out of this conversation here. At 57:59 Chris just finished saying something quite interesting...regardless of the chart placement's due to the free will the native has the choice to manifest differently according to his or her experiences and/or even other factors; reading your crush birth chart's a fool's errand.
That's a good view on what healthy boundaries should be like!

I have a big opposition in my chart with five personal/social planets in it, and for years, I tended to get involved both romantic and friendship-wise with people whose charts create grand squares or T squares with my big opposition in synastry. It was difficult but spurred a great deal of growth for me! 1:04:53

1:00:00- I disagree here. What's wrong with looking at the birth chart after the first date, for example, and saying "ok yeah, we kept misunderstanding each other, that's mercury square mercury...but mars and Venus and Pluto have nice angles, so that explains why I want to see him again"? It's just nice validation for what you're already feeling. You can hold that information lightly. We don't necessarily always hold chart information in a closed-fist, pre-deterministic way.

Rsp astrology for me is also proof checking the rsp for risks of abuse and violence like being tested for stds before entering bed together. So I'd have to agree to disagree there.
Check composite etc and do make more calculated rsp decisions. That one case where someone found the love of his life is not a reason to not advise people to not take chances when potential for abuse shows up as a theme in the rsp
I'd look at the outer planets and how they interact with inner planets for that.
That was my one note. I agree completely with mostly everything she says.

If I was an astrologer this is probably the biggest topic I’d call a big convention for just to say what Jessica is doing which is this needs to be less romantic/sexual astrology and more general/broad. If there’s romantic/sexual interest you don’t need a chart evaluation to state what you already know if you’re looking at charts. It’s an area (due to that) I never bothered to care about until someone else showed me a different angle; to me all charts are compatible, but you can’t predict if the individual will care enough to make it work. I agree with Jessica in that it’s more about the individual charts. I just look at it as other people are intense transits. What I learned is that you don’t need direct personal involvement with a person to get the chart dynamics. If my right wing uncle is coming up from florida for Christmas I may want to get a general idea on how to make it as pleasant as possible, I don’t want to know anything about how sexually compatible we are. Synastry, overlays, etc.. great. But you often can’t look into it without throwing up in your mouth a little if you’re not looking into it that way.
This is the most/longest I’ve allowed myself to engage with astrology because I quickly go to the “meh” mindset sometimes just due to determinism/free will debates where if it’s true reading/studying astrology isn’t doing anything. This time is different, there’s an approach which is the only one that’s ever resonated as having a point where I’m more or less looking at overlays/synastry to pinpoint why that’s different. The Tarnas family archetypal struck a chord, I finally started reading cosmos and psyche. An early review is it’s beautifully written where I could read it front to back in one day and not notice I did. I’m not learning anything, I just know this even though the focus and how it’s explained is different. I can understand it’s a difficult read for some so I’m interested in why it’s not hard for me to read despite it being written on a focus I don’t know/care too much about while also making mental notes with how it can be explained differently for those not the target audience. Astrology wise, estimating Becca’s chart, what stood out is the nodal flip and this is the same with Richard, but not as strong. I didn’t care for the interpretation so I intuited it’s that the south nodes are beneficial to the north nodes. Reality, virgo north node with Mercury retrograde, I have trouble taking these subjects and rationally laying them out. When I get to looking at Becca’s work because that aspect is stronger, I may relate more to her method where it’s probably noticeable by my reaction to her LotR’s explanation. My gripe about the Jungian angle is it dwells on the past where now is more relevant. Greek myth, beyond core archetypes it’s “meh” to me. Modern archetypes and their evolution? Bingo, Becca seems more that.
My point is I’m testing these method out and I really don’t know or care that I’m more romantically and sexually compatible with Richard and it’s ridiculous that’s so focused on.
I agree “synastry” should be more about how natal charts interacting are developmental plus can be beneficial.
I’m a Venus in libra, not in Taurus. My mars is libra, not aries. Pluto is conjunct both in libra, it can give perspective. Plus south node is in the 7th, if I decide to have a relationship I’ll point those out. Those libra placements are conjunct moon, chiron square moon in the 8th chiron opposite Uranus. Factor in 12th sun, merc, etc.. I’m a big bottle of confusing. I’m a guy, I’ve never pursued a relationship, I don’t initiate sexual relationships or acts where I’ll turn them down 90% of the time.
This is long, but this was a 2+ hr cast.
Twin flames.. this is from plato, it’s just an alternate to soul mates where soul mates became more soul contract.
Easiest interpretation, the 7th house is the house of other which is the shadow cast by the ascendant. It’s a self experienced by other which is next to the house of enemies. It’s a spiritual enemy that’s a partner, as opposed to 6th and 12th. Your interaction and experience with the 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th are founded in that experience/attitude of the 7th. Toxic 7th, toxic houses after. Relationship with self defines relationship to other, romantic or commitment wise be it that or business. If you’d stab your spouse/partner in the back, you’d do it to anyone. Soul contracts/soul mates are people who support and push us, a twin flame is more a person who completes the circle where one feels whole and where the ideology falls into self abusive fallacy is it’s used to be codependent on toxic relationships and the key detail of twin flames is the relationship isn’t about buying a home and having kids or just hot sex.. it’s actually not caring about that and being at service to humanity for some humanitarian cause. The relationship is in the back seat. When people reference their twin flame I make note they’re not at all interested in solving world hunger or anything spiritual with a love for humanity. There’s no Jesus and Mary where a church to care for the underprivileged is set up to radically take down rome and established religion. 😆 in my case, I have Ketu in the 7th with Jupiter in the 11th cancer and Ketu causes detachment from the 7th, 3rd, 11th. Even choosing Neptune as ruler, same result and I use the twin flame ideology just because my chart has it set up plus my first love brought it up that I liked, rejected it, then reinstalled it at my Saturn return which just defines the relationship I want.
In synastry, with what some look for, it’s a problem are because nodes play a big theme and this is a weak area in astrology. Reading cosmos and psyche, I can say it resonates easily not just because of the close nodal flips but (looking) quick glance: my Venus, mars, and Pluto are conjunct south node mars, Neptune with his Mercury conjunct my moon. The few interviews I’ve watched/listened to I make mental notes on how he’s more graceful in criticisms than I which is likely my Pluto conjunctions. Node contacts are what I look for because I feel them right away. One astrologer I despised for no reason which caught my attention because it’s not uncommon to disagree with an astrology these days. My Saturn is directly on her north node which was triggered immediately, but in terms of synastry she’s the most “compatible” chart I’ve ever seen. It’s just that Saturn. Discomfort is when using chart interaction it’s almost always romantic and sexual in interpretation which is often inappropriate because very few people well meet or come across will fall into romantic and/or sexual. That needs pulled back on and separated more clearly. I may wonder why I was bothered by a astrologer and I’m getting Kama sutra positions. 😆 I wonder why I’m so strongly open to another astrologer where it sets off a more kind/caring side to read “they love each other but can’t karmically consummate the relationship”.. that needs toned WAY down.
That was too long. Synopsis: build on what Jessica is doing so people don’t read romantic and sexual compatibility with their newborn children which is gross. I can guarantee this has happened where people never look into synastry ever again.

Relationship astrology is possibly my least favorite area of astrology just because the emphasis is on sexual/romantic, but my weekend was marked with suddenly (for whatever unknown reason) I started throwing up composites being blown away by the accuracy. Now I’m revisiting a topic I never cared much about. 😆
I’m tempted to start showing the quintile’s and why casting a horary suggested conflict through misunderstandings; we’ll see.
I think you have to fully analyze all charts, but the composite is fascinating because it could show if something is headed in a direction the other charts suggest isn’t a great fit.
Mars in Leo is my favorite planetary placement to make fun of, but it’s not entirely serious. There’s a definite pattern with it which is easily understood in having mars and Venus in libra where I prefer women who assert themselves. Libra is masculine, but it’s a passive one. As long as it’s balanced. I skimmed some others, it’s an interesting pattern mixed with other things. Best fits are often mars in leo which is somewhat difficult for women to deal with that shift. Synastry can be handy with that because any leo placements will be in my 12th and what can test confidence is the awareness of the sun/Mercury in leo in the 12th where it’s in the 12th. Knowing synastry can help in many ways like individual dynamics along with what’s/why’s. Composites are a fascinating layer I ignored.
I’ve mentioned in comments about a person I had a dream about that ended up an actual person. Composite is applying Venus and Neptune 5th which is what you’d expect in that scenario, but there’s also a Saturn 1st which is why I’ll openly joke about it because there’s also that sort of mitigating placement. There’s very much a Saturn tone. An unusual thing said that was strange to me was something she probably picked up on before I did, she has caution about loss of freedom which is shown in the composite where there’s a HEAVY 4th house focus. She’s a person who works around the clock and likes freedom to travel at will. With that part, there’s an 8th house moon that would definitely be circled to be analyzed. However, the 11th house Jupiter is actually my favorite composite placement. We both have natal Jupiters in the 11th. My own is exalted in a day chart, hers is ruled by her sect benefic in a night. It’s actually easy to see where those 8th moon issues would be. Casting a lot of composites, I do pick friends well. I don’t like having many, but I do a good job on that front.
I sort of wonder if, someday, I should write down a full delineation on where some of these ideas come from with karmic relationships, soul mates, twin flames. At some point they shifted to self abusive ideologies which is bizarre, but in my deep dive into astrology a detail I found that my mind flagged was a period where there was a neptunian shift that will probably be balanced out as Hellenistic gets more traction. I have a heavily aspected Neptune, but also a 1st house Saturn. I often get into ideologies I don’t often instinctively agree with because the counter balance is, well, balancing. A person who’s a strong proponent of free will may find a release in determinism. The same Vice versa. Feeling you have to impose your will and all good and bad in your life doesn’t leave any opening to just accept what is and see what’s good in it. If someone is saying their karmic relationship is hurting them and they’re focus is on them and not themselves, there may just be a reason for that karma.
That could be an interesting topic to-one day-write about. I have the “twin flame” ideology by coincidence and I like to joke about it. I actually threw in a composite where it was actually a “hit” and it’s a person I don’t know, so I just had me “god d*mn it!” moment. It’s just a composite with certain placements that match my 7th house delineation, the reality of whatever that is would be unknown. What’s on paper is just on paper. May explain why I had an initial hatred at first.
Quintile.. individuation and democracy are incompatible and in direct opposition of each other while also being in an extreme codependency. It’s like astrology, whenever you think you got it you find out you don’t. Democratizing is raising numbers, which being within a group decreases individuation because individuation is breaking the dependency of needing group acceptance. It’s in interesting thing in terms of astrology because there are so many ancient texts that may describe something we view as a negative judgment when they themselves may not have actually viewed it that way. It just may have social consequences. Like, having a mars in detriment, it can create a social outcast which creates a strange paradox.
It’s extremely easy to misunderstand, especially with that detriment placement. It’s also a good place to remind that I have a preference for more “masculine” personality women while also there being a balance which is often difficult for women because it’s still a new social norm developing. I absolutely agree that some people will have natal charts that are more “pleasure principle” than others. My own is self control based. A lot factors in which is difficult to interpret. If I went into astrology, I’d be near impossible to not accidentally imbue my natal placements into interpretations which is best to just call a “style”. I was revisiting some plato writings related to the death of socrates and his view on life where my own is somewhat similar. That’s not for everyone, but there’s a form of astrology for pretty much anyone. It still works.
The quintiles are .. sort of like a ping pong match that never ends that can be nonsensical at times.
If I ever end up with a person with those mentioned “twin flame” configurations, I may see an astrologer and being it up just to see if they see it as a joke. “I’m kidding, it’s just my 7th house and the composites just happen to show that.” It’d be a goal oriented composite. I have a lot to do, but I’ll likely test out composites next year.
If I recall correctly, that whole thing is from The Symposium. If you’re kinky and into quadrupedal dual sex humanoids, I’m sure it’s exhilarating.

Straight passing privilege is a bit of a misnomer though [edit: in some cases, I'm not about erasing someone's gender identity]. Bi women for example the stats on the health outcomes and abuse and sexual assault they're likely to experience is higher than straight women, but it is also statistically higher than gay women. Please take note.

She is more of a rebel than an astrologer in my humble opinion. All about breaking the boundaries of society’s established standards. And it’s ok to do so but that’s not what I look for in a good astrologer.
