Hi Johaness! We, here in Russia, always thought that you are true champ, and you are for honest competition. Please speak up on ban of Bolshunov and the rest of Russian sportsmen: they have no influence on current situation. For me personally, it is not interesting to watch you winning another Norwegian guy with no hard competition from Russian side. We still have stereotype the Norwegians are a sort of vikings and they don't need special conditions in order to win. Good luck, Johaness. From Russia with love. PS. As Putin is so proud of sport and Bolshunov, I don’t think the world will lift the ban. The war causes so much suffering. I don’t think any of the skiers are happy with the situation. It will be less exciting for audience. But If Klaebo asked this it would mean he thinks his competitions are more important than the lives of children. So I don’t expect competition with Russia this winter. It is all very sad. Let’s just hope it will be back to normal as soon as possible. All the best to you PT.
Bolshunov is an officer in the Russian army, no way sanctions will be lifted for someone like him. As long as the "military operations" (or invasion war as the rest of the world calls it) in Ukraine continues, so will the sanctions - which are more likely to be tightened and expanded, than eased, the longer the war in Ukraine lasts. Putin really has shot himself in the foot with this war. Not only has he set Russian trade back decades, caused anything from sport to culture to be closed out from most of the rest of the world, he has exposed serious weaknesses in the Russian military structure and strategy - and as a result the overwhelming force of the Russian forces has failed to take control of Ukraine, and instead aimlessly fires thousands of missiles and gunfire all over the place. Hitting mostly civilian structures from houses and blocks of flats, to hospitals and schools, killing civilian babies, children, women and grannies alike. There has even been blatant war crimes, from rape of girls to executions of tied up civilians. It is the worse European war since the second world war. That is a far more significant factor than a few athletes being shut out from competing internationally.
I'm sorry but that is a weird thing to say, for most of history people have been at war, that doesn't mean life around the world must stop. Would you ask the same question before the war in Ukraine started, when the people in Syria, Iraq or Yemen were the ones suffering?

Any country has the right to decide for themselves which countries they want to cooperate with, and which international organizations they want to join. Whether Ukraine wants to join NATO or the EU, that is their decision - not Russia's. Or rather Putin's. He runs Russia as if it should have been his personal piggy bank. Norway is one of the richest countries in the world because the Norwegian government began investing the Norwegian oil revenue on the world stockmarket. It is called the Norwegian pension fund. Imagine if Russia had done the same, how much better off financially both Russian pensioners and other ordinary Russians would have been, if the oil revenue had been invested and spent to their benefit, and not just to enrich oligarchs?
