Early In Flames had the best melodic riffs. Check out Artifacts of the Black Rain, Jotun, Moonshield, Dead Eternity, Episode 666, Pinball Map, Only for the Weak... there's just so many. Pretty much anything from The Jester Race, Whoracle, Colony or Clayman albums.
This is not their first album, it's their fourth full length album. Their first full album is "Lunar Strain," but they also released an EP after that, "Subterranian." It is, however, the first track on Colony. (They also released another EP between "The Jester Race" and "Whoracle", so this album is fairly deep into their career... Also around the time I became a fan back in 99.) Personally, this is my favorite In Flames album but as another poster noted, all their early work from "Lunar Strain" to "Clayman" are great. "Lunar Strain" and "Subterranian" are very different from the sound of this album, almost black metal with a heavy focus on guitar melodies and Stanne embraced that ethos with his vocal style. "The Jester Race" and "Whoracle" are more akin to this album but that was back when Anders actually did a vocal style that was akin to most death metal bands. Even though I prefer Anders' vocals on those albums, I think "Colony" works better as a whole than either of those... It's a tough call for me, though, as Whoracle and Jester Race are basically considered melodic death metal classics and some of the founding material for the genre, along with early Dark Tranquillity, early Arch Enemy, early Soilwork, early Opeth and At The Gates before they broke up for over a decade. Often that early iteration of melodic death metal is called the Gothenburg sound because so many of those bands either lived in or around Gothenburg, Sweden. I'm not a fan of what came after Clayman, which is a lot more generic and with far less emphasis on melodic guitar leads, which is exactly what had them stand out in the first place. The entire line-up of this band on this album minus the vocalist and one of the guitarists are no longer in In Flames and started their own band, The Halo Effect. The Halo effect also features the original vocalist of In Flames on their first album and EP and current vocalist of Dark Tranquillity, Mikael Stanne, and another former guitarist of In Flames. They write songs a lot more like this era of In Flames; probably due to In Flames firing their guitarist, founding member and lead songwriter of this time, Jesper Stromblad, who is now in The Halo Effect. They just released one album recently and it is quite good; if you like this, you'd probably like them as well. Stanne's vocals are more akin to what he currently does in Dark Tranquillity than his performance on the early In Flames' releases, and he even does some clean singing. In all honesty, Stanne is one of the few vocalists that can do both so well and I actually want to hear him sing more than he does... Usually it's the other way around! He did a lot of clean vocals on the Dark Tranquillity album "Projector" which is from the same time as "Colony"... Both bands used to tour together quite often and toured for both those albums together across the US and Europe! I happened to see them live back when they were touring with Nevermore in 2000! That was one of the best shows I've seen to this day. In Flames haven't been nearly as good live every time I've seen them since that era and Nevermore... well, you know that story. Speaking of Nevermore, despite UA-cam changing my handle, I still want you to react to "The Learning" by them!
@@eversteal My mistake! I love that track too and know that it is the first track... Not sure why I brain farted when writing that comment. Thanks for the correction!
@@eversteal it may be the 5th on the album, but it's first in my heart. (for real, it's my favorite IF song and my favorite guitar solo of all time, and is a major reason I play guitar today)
Great reaction. If you want more of this then December Flower (best solo ever) most definitely should be next but then again almost anything from Jester's Race, Whoracle, Colony and Clayman albums is phenomenal. Both of you will also love My Sweet Shadow from them, guaranteed.
Not just jester, Bjorn co composed all the songs on this album except for beyond space which wasn’t even a new song for them. I enjoyed the halo effect but it kinda just sounded like modern DT, sounded way more like DT than in flames.
Colony has some great work on it! Scorn would be another pick on there for me! Otherwise Trigger off of Reroute haaas to be a must for most (right??? just me? surrrrely not). The chorus is hypnotising for me
u guys funny :D nice reaction I enjoyed it whole. If you will continue reacting to the In Flames - I suggest - System or My Sweet Shadow. Some older and cooler Flames songs :)
I'll assume the singer always sings like that. Please tell me if I'm wrong. If he does, then this band could be one of the greats with a better singer. It's rare for keyboards to sound good in metal. I appreciate bands than can pull it off.
It's the biggest melodic death band in the world, so I'd say they are pretty big already. Dunno what exactly you mean with the singer, if you dislike growling in general then thats just a matter of taste, its part of the genre. If you just think he sucks at growling then yeah, I also think theres better ones.
@@epicadventureturtle1363 What I mean is, their music is so good, that with a singer, rather than a growler, they would be more than "pretty big," they would be an all-time great.
@@killermonjero Dunno man, there are plenty of bands with more complex melodies and clean vocals and they neither appeal to average people nor to metal fans. Imo In Flames got this big because of their niche, not despite it.
@@killermonjero Just no. Singing actually turned off alot of fans. And full singing would be the worst thing you could do to this band. Anders has one of the most unique screams/grows in the genre, but he convinced himself, that he's a great singer adn proceeded changing the flow of the band. If you want more singing, then listen to their newer albums, like "I, the Mask". You should be happy with it, casue it has more singing, than growls. Also creation of band named The Halo Effect(former In Flames members) actually forced In Flames to go back to their roots in terms of melodies and heaviness of their songs. All of the 4 new singles, that they released were very good. Even the latest one "Foregone pt. 2", that had more singing, was still very good, cause of melodic riffs and growls carrying it. Old Jesterheads were waiting for a good album for more than a decade and we finally might get it, if Anders won't ruin it with forced singing parts.
Lol this is the most legendary band of an entire genre, this album and the 2 before it and the one after it are all iconic melodeath albums. They don’t need a new singer, the vocals go perfectly with the music. It’s fuckin melodic death metal what type of vocals are you expecting lol. This music would be way worth with singing clean vocals, the band themselves started doing clean vocals and it wasn’t received very well and the music in general declined. This shit is peak melodeath it just might not be for you.

Thanks for the write up! Yes we need to get to more nevermore and after this, definitely more in flames!
This is not the first track on ”Colony”, this is the fifth track. The first track is titled ”Embody the invisible” and is an absolute banger!

Subterranean EP vocals were done by Henke Forss from the amazing melodic black/death metal band Dawn.
Now this was when In Flames was great!
This has been my favorite song for about 20 years now. This always amazes and will never get old.
Check out dimu borgir, children of bodom and Amon amarth. If you like Harvey with a great melody
Colony live at sticky fingers. Awesome track.

Same 😁
First album!? "Colony" (1999) was their fourth full-length...
Yeah I don't know why I said that.. my mistake!
Really good. Good riffs and lots of switch ups.
Its Sooooo Jesper Strömblad.....wich is fantaboulous!!
And NOW The Halo Effect!!!

you need to listen to cloud connected live at sticky fingers, you havent seen what in flames is capable of yet
Colony is the bomb, though I prefer reroute to remain and soundtrack to your escape the best. Sounds of a playground fading is a great album too.
Colony live at Sticky fingers, please 👍
Colony, Clayman, and Reroute to Remain were always my favorite albums from In Flames. It's been along time since I listened to them.

You should listen to Man Made God from the Colony album
This is by far not their first album
Hey, can you please react to "As The Future Repeats Today" by In Flames from the album Clayman (2020 Remastered)?
