So glad I found this channel. Do to unforeseen circumstances, I rescued a baby albino Leopard gecko last night. I got a text, and went after work to pick him up. So far, I’ve got a tank with a wire top, a lamp that sits on top, a rock type hiding thing, which I believe is his warm hide. Along with a sort of felt pad at the bottom. I’ve ordered the heating pad, a “cool” hide and a thermostat. All I have for him right now are freeze dried crickets that were given to me. Are those okay to feed them? Would you recommend worms instead? Where can I find those powders? I also read that they like plants, would you recommend live plants or artificial? I have SO many questions, 0 experience with lizards of any kind. I’m not sure how old he is either, or how to tell if he’s stressed out or about to drop his tail? I looked for the videos you recommended and clicked the links but they wouldn’t load for me, any advice ANYONE could offer me would be heeded and sooooo appreciated
Don’t bother with the freeze dried crickets, most geckos refuse them and they have hardly any nutritional value. Live insects are a must. Mainly live crickets or Dubia roaches with worms sometimes (there are many different types of worms you can use, the more variety the better). You can find calcium and multivitamin powders at petstores and on Amazon. Dust with calcium every other feeding and vitamins every three feedings (one must contain d3). You can either use live plants or artificial plants. If you go with live plants, succulents and air plants are good. They need LED lighting, though, and succulents need soil (such as reptisoil or organic top soil). I’d change the substrate. Paper towel would be good for now. Paper towel, non-adhesive shelf liner, or textured tile are all good solids. It’s best to offer digging enrichment with reptisoil, organic top soil, or a bioactive substrate. You could do full loose, half and half, or full solid with a dig box. Also be sure to get a digital thermometer, a humid hide, and a 20 gallon long or bigger
Fiona Shepley I ended up getting Gizmo live crickets, a cool hide to go with his humid one and different mosses. Since then he seems much more comfortable. He’s not as timid and comes out of his hide more, last night he slept in his cool hide which was really cute! Thank you for the advice, I appreciate it so much 💜
4 months ago, I commented I was going to get a leopard gecko. I got a bearded dragon instead because of personal reasons. Now I am actually going to get a leopard gecko as in the original plan, and I plan on building a vivarium for her that’s 3 feet 3 inches long, 1 feet 7 inches tall, and 1 feet and 7 inches wide. I am so excited! However it will take some time, and the gecko will move in, in the next 1-2 months :D
Hi c: so I jus wanted to take a minute to thank you for all of your work. I was talked into taking in four leos a few months back (never even handled lizards before then), and your videos have given me a bit of confidence when I'm feeling unsure. They don't seem to particularly enjoy certain things that your leopard geckos do, but almost anything's better than how they were treated before. In any case, my problem is that I don't have an income, and so have to do everything as cheaply as possible without sacrificing too much in the way of quality.. I'm currently on the lookout for seperate cages (the leos grew up together in a 20G long and I haven't been able to house them individually yet), and that means heat mats are my priority. I don't think your brand comes with US plugs, which is a shame because I trust your judgement more than some random online reviewers; do you happen to have any tips for me? What are your thoughts about the chance of scorching/overheating when a heatmat is placed directly inside of an enclosure?
Nope. They also need: -the enclosure (ideally 40 gallons or larger) -calcium and multivitamin supplements -climbing enrichment/plant coverage -a suitable substrate (after quarantining on paper towel for the first three months, a soil/sand or soil/sand/clay mix is best) -to elaborate on the thermometer part: you need a temperature gun to measure surface temps, and a digital thermometer/hygrometer combo to measure ambient temps and humidity -dimmer or dimming thermostat to prevent the lamp from overheating -it’s recommended to have at least three hides: warm, cool, and humid -tube UVB bulb (they can live without it but it’s very beneficial) -spray bottle -feeding tongs (optional)
your voice reminds me of @jossers jungle ... or hers reminds me of yours. lol whichever it is, she is the ball python to your gecko. Both of you have the best vids on proper care for these animals, and I ALWAYS take both your advice on care sheets. Thanks for all the help!
wow. You know what's funny, I never knew that leopard geckos lived in rocky grasslands until I watched your videos. My geckos are currently in an aquarium, they live in our very cold basement, and they absolutely hate the sand in their tank. Thank you so much for the information :D, none of the pet store "experts" have ever told me any of the stuff I have learned here
probably the reason why they haven't bonded with me over the past 4 years is because of their setup. It's really sad to think that i've been doing it wrong for all these years :(
I live in America and I was was wondering what heat mat, thermostat, and thermometer I should use because I can’t get the Habistat one here. I have a twenty gallon tank and am working on improving it!
Zoo med and Flukers heat mats are good. I power is a good thermostat on Amazon. Any digital thermometer is good. Either one with a probe or a temperature gun, or ideally both. You can also look into overhead heating from a ceramic heat emitter or, even better, a deep heat projector from lightyourreptiles.com.
We roughly know what to do as I did hours of research, and our local reptile experts sell kits with the lights, thermostat, thermometer, heat mat and carpet, we also now own the terrarium, two little caves and we have had many tips from the staff, and I hope my gecko is happy with it’s surroundings when we get it on December 27th.
Carpet is not a good substrate. It catches their teeth and claws and harbours bacteria. Quarantine on paper towel for the first six weeks. Paper towel, non-adhesive shelf liner, or textured tile are all good solids. It’s best to offer digging enrichment with reptisoil, organic top soil, or a bioactive substrate. You could do full loose, half and half, or full solid with a dig box. It’s best to have at least three hides: warm, cool, and humid. Is the thermometer digital or analog? And what types of lights?
Fiona Shepley We have a reptile place near us, and they have things like, pythons, corn snakes, bearded dragon, crested geckos and leopard geckos. So I’m really hoping that the staff know what they’re doing, and the kit that we got from the place for the gecko Is good for now, as it came with carpet, and all the other reptiles there had carpet, but when we go and purchase the gecko I will ask if they themselves have had issues with carpet, so I hope it’s ok
Thunder Shock! You can use paper towel, it’s extremely cheap. Or you can use your own money (get a job if possible). You cannot trust everything the pet store employees say (I used to co-op at an exotic petstore, I would know). Carpet is not a good substrate.
Lovvve this sooooo much seriously hunny I and ur whole following needs more of this amazing so helpful love ur vids sooo much!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hi, I have a question! In the process of setting up a leopard gecko enclosure. I have a heat mat, a thermostat & probe thermometer. Been monitoring the heat for a few days before I bring “yoda” home! Here’s my question- the liner I put down for now is temporary, I don’t care for it it’s a faux moss mat so it’s like a fleece material and I’m finding it’s shedding fuzz all over, which I feel will be unsafe. so I ordered reptile carpet instead. But in the meantime I have the probe under the liner on top of the heat mat. The thermometer is reading a temp of 90, however I am curious to know if that heat is coming through the liner. Because when I put my hand over the heated area I barely feel any heat coming through. This liner I have is quite thick so maybe that will change when I get the new reptile carpet but my concern is that even though the heat pad seems to be omitting enough heat if my gecko is laying on the heat pad in his hide will he be actually feeling the adequate heat from it. Let me know what you think..I also have an analogue thermometer & hygrometer on the opposite side of the tank, they came with the tank so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to have more readings and they are on the humid side. Just want to ensure yoda has everything he needs! My other question quickly is that the tank I have came with a terrarium canopy for light, & didn’t come with bulbs. I know the light is solely for viewing purposes, but I have no idea what bulb would be appropriate. I’ve been watching video after video & researching as much as I can, but I really want to make sure I get the right bulb that’s not going to create any more heat or be too bright or harm him in anyway. Any recommendations would be appreciated the tank I have is an exoterra 12 x 12 front closure tank, and the canopy is considered “compact mini” and claims to take a 26w fluorescent or 25w incandescent bulb. Are those safe? This enclosure is temporarily going to be used until he gets larger & I can find a better spot to set up the tank with adequate electricity & day light etc. I know the small size is not ideal for long term.
It’s normal for the warm side to feel cool to you considering humans have a body temperature of 98. I don’t recommend reptile carpet, it catches their teeth and claws and harbours bacteria. Paper towel is good for quarantine for the first six weeks and under six months. Reptisoil, organic top soil, or a bioactive substrate is good over six months for digging enrichment. Analogs are very inaccurate. LED lighting would be fine
If it’s bioactive with a cleanup crew, you don’t need to change it. If it’s not bioactive you can get away with going several months without fully changing it as long as you spot clean.
Heat mats are not a good heat source, overhead heating is much better for them. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option, Arcadia’s deep heat projector is the second best option. They produce infrared A and B like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue and heats them far more effectively. Whereas heat mats only produce IRC, which only heats the surface of their skin. Also, I’d get a bigger enclosure. 90x45x45cm or bigger is ideal.
Bianca Alina there’s no size limit if you have enough hides/cover. Only similarly sized females can be housed together, and even then it can end badly.
Hello! I just recently bought a leopard gecko and the Zilla Desert kit with an additional UTH and hides, I'm worried something is off though because he doesn't seem to be eating the crickets or mealworms I gave him, and I'm also concerned about the temp because the kit comes with two domes and bulbs, 1 for day and 1 for night, but they are 50 watts and I'm worried it isn't warm enough. He is constantly in his warm hides over the UTH. Thanks for your help! Janae
I'm looking into getting the Arcadia Shade dweller for my daughters setup. She has a 25 gallon enclosure (30" L x 12" W x 16" H) and I was wondering if the Shade dweller 7% is a good one for a tank that size? Thank you
I’d upgrade to a 40 gallon or bigger. And with that bulb, the basking spot will need to be 8-13 inches away (assuming the bulb is on top of a mesh lid).
Were learning a lot from you and the knowledge you have. But I have a question now about your setup though. Where do you get the side walls and background wall?
I have a 20 gallon aquarium, meaning it opens on the top. I’ve always wanted one that opened on it’s side, but I’m hoping I could do that with what I have. My question was if you could flip an aquarium on its long side, so that the top faces out like a side opening tank? Then find a slide-on mesh door that you would use for a snake?
ELLAnimations I don’t know. I have a snake and I don’t do that. You could get what she has if it’s available in your area or get an exo Terra. Make sure to elevate the aquarium for air flow :)
They can survive with just LED and d3, but not thrive. I strongly recommend using a tube UVB bulb and a PAR38 halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat. They’re the most natural and beneficial options.
@@nightinggale6470 Thanks so much for getting back to me. If I'm providing the UVB bulb and dimmer do I still need to include d3 in the Leopard Geckos diet?
In the wooden vivariums where do put the heat lighting? And do they need a heat light in the day and a heat mat over night? And do they need a light on he cool side ff their tank? Pls if u have answers tell me soon cuz im doing some reasearch into getting one so.....
so as for suppliments, the earth pro a should be used every other feeding, and the calcium & magnesium should be kept in the tank? if so what should i use for vitamins? sorry im getting a leopard gecko soon and i want to get this all right XP
No supplements in the tank. Dust with calcium every other feeding and vitamins every three feedings. You can use the Arcadia vitamins, or another brand. Keep in mind one needs d3 unless you use UVB.
Sorry if you've answered in another video but do you just put the heat mat inside the vivarium and your eco earth on top? I'm moving to a wood vivarium from glass and just trying to sort out how to safely use a mat. Thanks!
I know this is an old video, but I had questions about lighting and flooring if anyone knows the answers. I have an adult female leopard gecko with a pretty good overall enclosure (She has 3 hides, a water bowl, calcium dish, a fake plant, heating pad, and a wooden climbing thing). For lighting, she is in a room that almost always is lit up naturally during the day and dark at night. I used to use heat lamps (one day and one night) for heating, but now since I use a heating pad, do I still need non-heating lamps? Thanks! Secondly, I haven’t been able to find some of the flooring mixes, so I typically just use paper towels and moss. I know I have all of the bare-minimum necessities down, and even considerably more, but I wanted to make sure that Lilith Lillianna XLIII is living her best life 😌💗 Thanks!
She doesn’t need any lights, natural light is fine on its own. Linear UVB is beneficial but not completely necessary. You could look into overhead heating from a deep heat projector, it would be beneficial as well. For substrate it’s best to offer digging enrichment with reptisoil, organic top soil (without fertilizer or perlite, Scott’s is a good brand), or a bioactive mix. Half textured tile half soil is good as well. I’d remove the calcium dish, it’s unnecessary (dusting every other feeding with it is enough) and can actually do more harm than good. Do you have a digital thermometer and a thermostat for the heat mat?
OK, I've got paladarium, and two geckos, my smaller one isn't eating(that I've noticed) the larger one loves to hunt crickets. The one that won't eat, I've tried hand and tweezers feeding him meal worm, reptiboost vitamins, and I'm starting really worry about him/her (can't tell). Do you have any suggestions?
I'm trying to make a vivarium myself, since I can't find any that will ship to me, and I was wondering what the exact dimensions of yours are. I've been keeping my leopard gecko in an aquarium but really like the functionality and look of vivariums.
Do you have aby advice on transporting leopard geckos? I am going to a University only about 40 minutes away from where I live but any advice on how to properly transport my geckos is appreciated!
Larkin Willis use a Tupperware container, big enough for the leopard gecko to turn around and move a bit. It may seem small, but putting it in a large container is dangerous as the gecko can be tossed around and get injured. Obviously make sure that the lid has plenty of holes and use paper towel as substrate in the container. Hope that helps!

Love ur videos keep it up!
thank you :)
I have a leopard and a crested and I've had my leo for about 4 years and he's so sweet. My sister just got a baby leopard and he is the best they definitely are special creatures and they all have different personalities! By the way love your channel so much!!!!
aw thats so cute :) yeah they're each very different. Thank you :D

Jack and the derby boy yeah but a updated one
I think we can all agree, Her tanks ARE GOALSSSS
Are the tanks you use for your leopard geckos sold in the USA? If so could you send me a link to where you get them? I really want a 15-20 gallon tank for my Leo and I really want one where you open it from the front... Also can you send me a link to your light you use during the day? I think my gecko needs it sence she for some reason is always out on the day
Sara Crawford I Dont think they sell them in stores,Most people buy them online or in expos.Im pretty sure she uses a VivExotic, however i use a Terrapod vivarium and by far the best vivarium brand i've had.I got mine off of Ebay but im sure you can get them on different websites aswell
I have an exoterra terrarium that opens in the front too that I bought at Petco. It’s the medium wide/low size and works well for my single male leopard gecko.
I bought on swell reptiles or a shop called little hamptop exotics maybe check them out idk?
Look on Petsmarts website. There is a 23 gallon kit, that opens from the front, and has a foam background. Dimensions are below
23.6” x 17.7” x 12.6”
or u could just search terrarium on Gumtree
Thank you so much! I have watched tons of up to date videos across your channel and they have helped me give my gecko the most healthy life I can. Thank you! XOXO
Any recommended sites to get heat pads? Next video should be on how to install one just so nothing burns down.
yeah I did a video on how to install a heat mat with a UK plug, but also I have a video on where or not heat mats are safe (you'll find it in the FAQ Friday Playlist), and i talk about properly installing them, or you can watch some of the setting up tanks, or tank builds, videos as you see me installing the heat mats in them.

Getting a super giant (first reptile).Cost me a pretty penny.Your vids help out alot when it comes to caring for Leos.
StarShine SoBright the super giant gecko's are the most expensive one and that's the downside of keeping them. If something goes wrong then you lose all that money.
Joseph Bennett That's what I'm afraid of.Even thinking about her going through shipment scares me. Hopefully all goes well.
StarShine SoBright I hope your Leo is happy and healthy when it arrives. Did you get tracking info for it when it gets shipped so you can see where it is and when it will get to you so you can be there to receive it from the shipping company.
i read somewhere that giants and super giants are extra docile - so really nice :) Good luck!

Thank you so much! I'm interested in getting a gecko and this helped me work out roughly how much it will be.
Thank you for the advice, I appreciate it so much 💜
You're the one who inspired me to make my own channel
aw brilliant! Well good luck with it :D
I’d get Zoo Med, just get a thermostat. The heat pads go underneath the tank :)
Fiona Shepley: I don't think putting a heat mat underneath a wooden terrarium would work... I've only seen inside
sunshine ley ah sorry you’re right I just assumed it was glass because they usually are. Usually I mention to put it inside if it’s wooden
Fiona Shepley: Well .3. glass is also more expensive; I'm currently looking into wooden enclosures, possibly diy, thus my worry about overheating.
sunshine ley I wish you could buy wooden tanks in Canada. I’m lucky I got a exo Terra tank for a cheap price on kijiji (Canadian website)!
Thanks to you I might get a leopard gecko! Can't wait!
for the things he needs i got
1. a lamp
2. food
3. 2 bowls for food and water
4. 2 hides
5. a thermometer
is that everything?
Nope. They also need:
-the enclosure (ideally 40 gallons or larger)
-calcium and multivitamin supplements
-climbing enrichment/plant coverage
-a suitable substrate (after quarantining on paper towel for the first three months, a soil/sand or soil/sand/clay mix is best)
-to elaborate on the thermometer part: you need a temperature gun to measure surface temps, and a digital thermometer/hygrometer combo to measure ambient temps and humidity
-dimmer or dimming thermostat to prevent the lamp from overheating
-it’s recommended to have at least three hides: warm, cool, and humid
-tube UVB bulb (they can live without it but it’s very beneficial)
-spray bottle
-feeding tongs (optional)
your voice reminds me of @jossers jungle ... or hers reminds me of yours. lol whichever it is, she is the ball python to your gecko.
Thank you so much for the information :D, none of the pet store "experts" have ever told me any of the stuff I have learned here
I'm going to try and get the geckos moved upstairs ASAP, change their sand out for eco earth, and add some rocky formations :)
probably the reason why they haven't bonded with me over the past 4 years is because of their setup. It's really sad to think that i've been doing it wrong for all these years :(
It’s great that you’re changing things! With the aquarium, just make sure there’s a gap between the tank and the surface it’s on for air flow :)
Also, are they both female?
yup. One is named colonel spots, which is a name I kind of regret. The other is Leo, but we just found out it's a she, so i'll be renaming her Mila
Finally, I am changing my gecko's tank thank you so much
no problem :)
I'm getting a Leopard Gecko today and I'm both excited and stressed. I don't want to be a bad owner and its just stressful 😂
How is it going?
@@ryliefox1905 Its been going great! We got another member of the reptile family back in August, he's a Yellow Nigerian Uromastyx
Fiona Shepley thank you!
Thank you so much leopard gecko!❤
your videos are so informative
Hi! I love all of your geckos, but ziggy is my fav. Why is she so cute?!
Fiona Shepley I know that, the only problem is my parents do ‘t want me buying other substrate because they don’t want to spend money....
Fiona Shepley you win, I’ll refund my stuff and won’t get a gecko until I can get new substrate.
Awesome video!!!
Thanks for the info!

I love your channel
thank you :D
When should I usually change out the earth mix?
If it’s bioactive with a cleanup crew, you don’t need to change it. If it’s not bioactive you can get away with going several months without fully changing it as long as you spot clean.
Best channel ever for leopard gecko and more I have a leopard gecko rex
How big heating mat should i get for terrarium 60*40*40 cm?
42*28 or smaller 30*20?
Heat mats are not a good heat source, overhead heating is much better for them. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option, Arcadia’s deep heat projector is the second best option. They produce infrared A and B like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue and heats them far more effectively. Whereas heat mats only produce IRC, which only heats the surface of their skin.
Also, I’d get a bigger enclosure. 90x45x45cm or bigger is ideal.
im going to get my first leopard gecko over the spring break!
nice!
Hi thank you for your videos! So informative and yet not overwhelming! Question, what tank size would you consider too big for one gecko? And for 2?
Bianca Alina there’s no size limit if you have enough hides/cover. Only similarly sized females can be housed together, and even then it can end badly.
Thank you very much for your answer!
Janae
Janae Moran I’d get rid of the lights. It’s normal for new geckos not to eat :)
how would you suggest heating the warm half of the cage enough and keeping the other half cool?
Janae Moran ceramic heat emitter
please either do a video or tell me how you supplement using the D3 tube light
I C supplementing is the same, just without d3 :)
watch my video about UVB & UVA, i do a review about the Mini UVB Kit, and in that I talk about supplements
By any chance does the website you have in the description plan on shipping to the US I really want to buy from there
Hi what is the background is it actual stone ? Where can you get the background from? Very nice may I say 👏
Were learning a lot from you and the knowledge you have. But I have a question now about your setup though. Where do you get the side walls and background wall?
thank you so much for this video
I have a 20 gallon aquarium, meaning it opens on the top. I’ve always wanted one that opened on it’s side, but I’m hoping I could do that with what I have. My question was if you could flip an aquarium on its long side, so that the top faces out like a side opening tank? Then find a slide-on mesh door that you would use for a snake?
ELLAnimations I don’t know. I have a snake and I don’t do that. You could get what she has if it’s available in your area or get an exo Terra. Make sure to elevate the aquarium for air flow :)
Fiona Shepley do you know what she has is called?
ELLAnimations I’m pretty sure it’s only available in the UK, unfortunately
Fiona Shepley oh okay. Thanks for your help, though
Fiona Shepley I’m 99.99% sure she has a Vixexotic wooden Vivarium. Not sure the size though

Excellent video you just answered my questions. Did you say you can just use a LED light & offer d3? Instead of getting the UVB light?
They can survive with just LED and d3, but not thrive. I strongly recommend using a tube UVB bulb and a PAR38 halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat. They’re the most natural and beneficial options.
@@nightinggale6470 Thanks so much for getting back to me. If I'm providing the UVB bulb and dimmer do I still need to include d3 in the Leopard Geckos diet?
@@mitchellrobertson1222 nope, they’ll be able to produce their own d3 with the UVB
@@nightinggale6470 thanks so much for your advice
In the wooden vivariums where do put the heat lighting? And do they need a heat light in the day and a heat mat over night? And do they need a light on he cool side ff their tank? Pls if u have answers tell me soon cuz im doing some reasearch into getting one so.....
Hetty B it’s best not to use a heat lamp, use a heat mat connected to a thermostat and measured by a digital thermometer 24/7.
@@fionashepley478 thankyou
so as for suppliments, the earth pro a should be used every other feeding, and the calcium & magnesium should be kept in the tank? if so what should i use for vitamins? sorry im getting a leopard gecko soon and i want to get this all right XP
No supplements in the tank. Dust with calcium every other feeding and vitamins every three feedings. You can use the Arcadia vitamins, or another brand. Keep in mind one needs d3 unless you use UVB.
Great video! Awesome info for newbies lol
thank you :)
They are sooooo cuteeeee

Sorry if you've answered in another video but do you just put the heat mat inside the vivarium and your eco earth on top? I'm moving to a wood vivarium from glass and just trying to sort out how to safely use a mat. Thanks!
dancedancellamapants yep :)
Ey, where did you get all ur geko stuff? Nice vid btw
Yeah I have a thermometer and thermostat hooked up to the heating pad. I’ll also take the extra calcium dish out, thanks!
Very helpful ❤️❤️❤️
thanks :)
Hello! I was just wondering where I can find the tank you have?? Is there someplace online? If so, link me to it??
Bump
I'm trying to make a vivarium myself, since I can't find any that will ship to me, and I was wondering what the exact dimensions of yours are. I've been keeping my leopard gecko in an aquarium but really like the functionality and look of vivariums.
Mia H 24x18x12 is good
Do you have aby advice on transporting leopard geckos? I am going to a University only about 40 minutes away from where I live but any advice on how to properly transport my geckos is appreciated!
Larkin Willis use a Tupperware container, big enough for the leopard gecko to turn around and move a bit. It may seem small, but putting it in a large container is dangerous as the gecko can be tossed around and get injured. Obviously make sure that the lid has plenty of holes and use paper towel as substrate in the container. Hope that helps!
yep what big pee said :)
Shit. I’ve been doing everything wrong for two years. Some dodgy pet shop didn’t even tell me the correct stuff (btw I had researched a lot before buying the gecko) I’ve also been trying to save up money to buy him new stuff but now I realised I need to spend more than I thought. Thank you so much. I feel so bad for my gecko I hope it’s not too late.
