    A fictional reimaging sounds so cool. I don't read many books like that, but I love the concept.

    700 pages is a commitment! I don't know much about Marilyn Monroe but I have heard that her life was wild. And this sounds like a really interesting fictionalization of her life.

      So much of it was apparently based on actual events! Chaotic and sad life!

    Wow, that was a long book - great work! I kind of wish I was only reading two books right now so I could get through the chunky ones more quickly.
    Honestly, I would not put it past the Kennedy family to have had Monroe killed. They lobotomized poor Rosemary!

    This sounds really good, and I wonder why Oates only refers to Arthur Miller as "the Playwright." I have to look up the reasoning for this! haha😎

    Blonde is a very distinguished addition to the distinguished tradition of Hollywood novels (Schulberg, West, Fitzgerald, Didion).

    Hi Sandy, I was eight years old when Marilyn Monroe passed away. It affected me very much. Maybe because my name was Marilyn too and because I loved her movies. Most of what you mentioned about the book was true. Of course I don't know everything the Kennedy Brothers but I read quite a lot about her when I grew up. Low self-esteem Tempe very self-destructive. I know that personally great review. Aloha

    I’ve read a few Oates novels before, generally liking them, but I always dismissed Blonde because of the subject. I wish I’d seen this review before shopping at Powell’s. I did pick of Them by Oates and I would have pick up Blonde too. It will have to go on my next buying binge.

      If you’ve been there, take a weekend trip and go. You will not regret it. I did a Powell’s day trip once, but that was a lot of driving. It’s about 2 1/2 to 3 hours each way from our neck of Washington.

    Sounds a fascinating book. You missed the "e" in Oates name in your title, I often slip up with typos, I see I spelled "reading" as "reding" in one of the captions on my latest video. That is a chunker of a book. It sounds a tragic story from her childhood on....

    Excellent review, Sandy! You are chipping away at that 1001 list! 👏🏼Interesting that the author talked about her dress since I’ve always heard the windy skirt scene from the Seven Year Itch was what lead to the DiMaggio split. I don’t know if that’s true or if the timing just fit, but I have always heard there was abuse there. I will say he was the person who secured her release from a psychiatric facility and organized her funeral. He also encouraged her to stay away from some Hollywood types he thought took advantage of her. Famously, Sinatra was one that was banned from her funeral. Sooo many Kennedy questions I need to look into, but I’ll save it for the buddy read! 🤣 I think this will give us loads to talk about.

    • @MsReadsAlot
      @MsReadsAlot  3 роки тому +1

      It was an interesting read! I think she was very troubled 😟 looking forward to our buddy read! 💗 she took a lot of real facts which makes it difficult to differentiate between fact and fiction!

    If it's Joyce Carol Oates you can be guaranteed the story will be dark and gritty. 🤣 I love that about her. I haven't read this one yet, but your review makes me want to get to it. I'll be reading a couple of Oates' books soon (ish): We Were the Mulvaneys and The Gravedigger's Daughter.

      @@MsReadsAlot Nice! Good luck! And yes, midnight tonight in the UK!
      I’m with you there! My goal of reading every Booker shortlist (which is about 300+ books) is far less ambitious than yours (although there will be some crossover on our two lists!) and even then it’ll take me another couple of years at the very least!

    • @MsReadsAlot

      And yes! I have lots of books out for the library, so part of me is hoping I've read most of them already, but if I haven't read many/any, that's exciting too as there will be lots of new books to check out!

    My knowledge of Marilyn Monroe is pretty limited, but this sounds like a very interesting read. Do you think not knowing much about her background helps to read this blend of bibliography & fiction? 700 pages is a big commitment !

    • @MsReadsAlot
      @MsReadsAlot  3 роки тому

      The book made me laugh. 🤣 I am such a dork! I think not knowing much allowed me to read it as fiction! Knowing her history may make this a frustrating read especially if Oates took a lot of liberties
