Intermittent Fasting Myths - Top 5 - ua-cam.com/video/MLxwtwYPkHU/v-deo.html
1. Overeating. Eat normally when not actually fasting.
2. Eating wrong diet. A high insulin diet will make it harder to stick to your fasting plan. 3:13
3. Doing it alone. 6:13
4. Triggers like emotional eating and other bad habits 7:05
5. Right environment 8:17
Some of the many benefits of doing occasional extended fasting: Blood clotting is reduced and blood clots and arterial plaque are reabsorbed into the body. Blood pressure is quickly and dramatically lowered. Fribrosis/scarring is reversed over time and telomeres are lengthened, which also helps with lung fibrosis. The hunger hormone ghrelin lowers with extended fasting and rises from dieting. Vitamin D plasma levels are increased, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy! Fasts from 36-96 h actually INCREASE metabolic rate due to norepinephrine release! Reflexes and short term memory are increased.
After 72 hours or more fasted, your body recycles large numbers of immune bodies and creates new ones, rejuvenating your entire immune system.
Weight loss from fasting only loses10% lean tissue and 90% fat compared to the typical 25% lean tissue and 75% fat lost when calorically restricting for long periods.
Blood sugar and insulin are lowered, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Ideal blood sugar is around 80. Some viruses activate glycolosis (the release of sugar in the body) and clinically it has been shown that decreasing glucose metabolism in the body weakens the influenza virus.
Losing weight through intermittent fasting shows greater reduction in waist size and increase in insulin sensitivity for the same weight lost and alternate day fasters were shown to lose fat while gaining muscle at the same time over a six month period.
When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins. This means the mechanisms needed by viruses to replicate are by and large unavailable when you are in a deeply fasted state.
What breaks a fast? Anything with protein or carbohydrates in it will break a fast, though if the amount is tiny you will go back into ketosis very quickly. Most teas and herbs are OK. Most supplements and meds will either break ketosis directly or contain a filler that will. Many medications are dangerous to take while fasting so you may have to talk to your dr. about discontinuing them during a fast.
Does fasting lower testosterone? No, it raises it when the fast is broken by increasing lutenizing hormone and helps build muscle by increasing insulin sensitivity!
The hormone Leptin is an immunomodulator that keeps the body from attacking itself and obesity causes leptin resistance. Fasting very quickly reduces leptin resistance and leptin levels and one day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again!
Does the body preferentially prefer glucose as a fuel? No, your body always runs mainly on fat except for brief periods of very intense exercise. Your brain also prefers to burn ketones at a rate of around 2.5 to 1 when they are available in equal quantity to glucose.
Fasting stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells. AMPK does many helpful things in the body including activating the body's antioxidant defenses.
Deep ketosis virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body. This can offset the life threatening symptoms of viral pneumonia which effectively kills you through inflammation. This also creates BHB ketones in your body, which also help your immune system and anti-oxidative system, especially in the brain. Ketones also provide an additional energy source during infection, which is critical when trying to fight off a bug. In fact you can have as much as three times the total energy available in your blood when you are in deep ketosis, or even more.
It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency and thereby making cells better able to fight off infection. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism and cancer prevention!
When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells. This kills these cells off completely. Senescent cells are responsible for the effects of aging and are the root cause of the development of cancer. If it were possible to destroy them all it would completely stop aging and cancer. That is not possible but fasting can help limit these effects by killing off many of the affected cells and limiting the future effects of aging.
Fasting also releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth, helping a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers.
In fact, the biochemical regulator of BDNF production is beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the same ketone the body produces to nourish the brain while fasting.
Fasting also increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level.
A fasting mimicking diet for 3-5 days in a row also provides many of the same benefits as water fasting. FMD usually has 200-800 calories, under 18 g of protein and under 18 g of carb.
Eating one meal a day can bring most of these benefits to a lesser degree, and adding a few entire days off from eating per week will have even more effect especially when starting to feel poorly.
Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or certain forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis. Those with Addison's disease may also be unable to fast without liberal use of exogenous ketones, depending on severity. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness then simply break the fast and seek advice.

Wow! There it is in a nutshell. Thank you. I’m going over to your UA-cam channel now. See you there. Maybe I can learn HOW to fast now that I know why I should fast.
I am reading this on day 5 fasting 😉👌
@@jamescalifornia2964 That's great!
I've lost over 50lbs with fasting and this is the best thing that I have ever done for my life. I even started a UA-cam channel to share my journey. I have a 50 more pounds to go and I know with fasting I will meet my goal.
whats your youtube channel as starting my own journey also on youtube ?
@@robertYoung-ut6bk I'm guessing it's fasting with Carla
Fasting saved my life iam no longer a binge eater iam very disciplined now and I love it all I eat is two meals per day no snacking
I did 40 days of one meal a day and dont know how to get out of it! i eat more and more in one sitting!
As well as the great feeling that comes after fasting. You have less cleaning of cooking utensils less energy used as you don't have to cook when you fast. Less shopping, more high quality foods. And you spend less dosh. Sound's like a plan. The Fungster has made a convert of me.
Wrong. Because you eat healthier, cost more on groceries, plus if during feeding time you have to eat enough as usually to prevent calories and nutrition deficiency and very important to eat enough to nourish the body..
Unless you have a family you care for. Then you're still cooking and cleaning.
@@larissaalcorn3406
My teen boys are better cooks than I am so they are well able to look after their own nutrition. While I am fasting.
@@Hippy2021
Well I dont stuff myself when I am eating my meals Otherwise it defeats the whole purpose of fasting.
Also if you buy good quality meat ,fish and butter, bacon and some veg it does not cost as much as crackers bread pasta waffles chips mash
donoughts cakes pies candies crisps and sodas.
I am sure that their is much more addictive rubbish that people call food.
Good luck Mary keep going at what works for you.
February will be my five year anniversary of IF and cutting out sugar.
One thing I've learned is that probably the most important part, even more that fasting, is eating unprocessed foods. That is an easy thing to say, but much harder to actually do. It is hard to overeat unprocessed foods. Food had never made sense to me, and the switch from junk calories to unprocessed food has shown me that when eating actual real food it does work, it does make sense.

At first, I fasted every other day. Then 3 days fasting, one day off. Then every saturday I eat. Now I fasted for 10 days. One day refed. I lost 30 kgs since august 3rd 2022. Feeling so good. Thanks dr. Fung
Congratulations!
What do you eat when you eat? After your fast?
I enjoy fasting!! Not being hungry or having to plan the next meal, etc. really frees up my time!!

They should give you the hero’s medal! Thanks! For years I had no idea why I kept gaining or couldn’t lose, seemingly eating less and less. It appears that cup of coffee with sugar, around the clock, had a lock on me! Gave that up and things are getting better day by day!
I started intermittent fasting 5 weeks ago. I only eat for 4 hours each day, except for coffee or tea. I have lost 20 pounds and my blood sugars are almost normal. The best part is that it’s not hard. Yes, I get a little hungry around 4 pm, but I find that I can make is to 6 or 7 pm when we usually eat dinner without much trouble. If I absolutely have to eat, I have some nuts. For my evening snack I have nuts of full fat Greek yogurt. I am feeling better that I have in years. Thank you, Dr. Fung!
Thanks for the info. I started a few days ago after a long time. Jus wondering how much do u eat in 4 hours window? Do u do any sort of exercise? I tend to eat afternoon then struggle at night. Any tips plz?? 🙂
I am also on week 5, but its different for me. I only eat one meal a day, but ive noticed if i eat some carbs, my weight loss stops. My goal was 20lbs but it stopped at 16lbs loss. Hard! Also I eat more in one sitting.
I told my wife what you said “ get out of the kitchen”. Trust me don’t say that to your wife.
😂funny how wives can give advice. But taking advice from us turns into putting us in the dog house.
Now you're sleeping on the couch lol.
🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣
It logically follows that your wife would be happy if you told her to "get back in the kitchen".
Hi, I just want to thank you for your videos on intermittent fasting,my wife has lost 8 kilo's I've lost 15.5 kilo's and my daughter has lost 22 kilo's.All in 3.5 month's.im now the weight I was when we got married 41 year's ago.i feel so much better and I feel it's helping me with my cancer. Your videos are inspirational and motivational.thank you again
Those first few months, are a real pick me up, but be careful fall and winter will mess you right back up
i started in December and i drank fresh orange juice first thing in the morning and went on with my fast as normal to help me with cravings
@@user-co9hx6gh4y
Don't drink your calories, stay away from juices and all processed foods, because fructose and sucrose go straight to storage.
You have absolutely changed my life, I will be forever grateful for stumbling across your videos. Have a fabulous 2023! ❤
Thank you for this. I've had to actually cook meals for my children while doing 5 day fasts. That's definitely a challenge.
You are much stronger than you think ! 😏👌
On point No. 3. For those who are alone in their pursuit of health, weight loss, reversal of T2D etc, refer regularly to video's which assist you in maintaining your will. The more you learn about how the body works and understanding the importance of a whole food lifestyle, the stronger you become, the easier it is to remain focussed without actually being conscious of being focused. Affirmation, steep yourself in the habits which promote health and longevity and be empowered by this pursuit.

I agree. It's not easy to have everyone on board. Watching lots of Dr. Fung and others to help keep me motivated. Plus...I just feel better!! We have to lead by example I guess.
I've been on 36 hr alternating days plan since I read Diabetic Code. This is only my second week but I've already noticed a major reduction in appetite on 'eat days'. Tuesday night I almost forgot to have dinner!
Happy New Year, Dr. Fung! Thank you for changing my life. All the best of 2023 to you and your loved ones.
My eyes tell me I ‘need’ to eat that particular food when I’m not hungry. 😠 I’ve noticed that boredom & the cold weather make me ‘think’ I need to eat. I’ve gained 8# recently & that is so aggravating to me. I need to get out of the kitchen! 😂 Thank you Jason again for your teaching! HAPPY NEW YEAR!🎆

Agreed, I do keto omad for my RA and it helps a lot with symptoms. I'm shortly going to start a 5-day fast - hopefully - to clear away the issues I got from eating 'badly' over the Xmas period.
A very Happy New Year, Dr Fung and all Fungsters! May 2023 be the best year yet for all of us with our journey to achieve and/or maintain health. 🎉🎊🎉
Happy New Year, everyone..
I am starting my my IF today .
Jumping right in as I done it before and lost weight and felt so much better in my own skin ...
My in-laws are visiting from China, you know how it is😂 I had to explain why i don't eat with the rest of the family because i am fasting for health reasons and they don't seem to understand. Elder generations think not eating three meals on time is a sin🙄. Anyways, my husband talked with them and they seemed to respect my diet but refuse to understand, that's why I have to do it alone. I am no where close to obese in BMI so diagnosed with pre-type 2 shocked me. I saw Dr Fungs video and thought to give it a try. I am losing about 1-2 pounds a week on a 12hr diet. My A1C went from 7.4 to 5.4 in 4 weeks. I am more energetic and sleep better already! I think i can stick with my routine forever! Thank you Doc!
Welcome to 2023 a happy new year from Johannesburg South Africa 👍💕🇿🇦

Lost 40+ pounds fasting and exercise with low carb ❤❤❤ never felt healthier in my life
Jumping back on the Intermittent Fasting wagon after the last 3 months and 30 lb weight gain.....I look forward to your videos for as much support as possible.
reducing portion size is actually really good imo
your stomach gets smaller over time and you get used to eating less with each meal
but maybe you have to eat a little more frequent and so you maybe you shouldn't do omad and go for something with a shorter fasting time
I remember I had 2 weeks at a school hostle with my class and I noticed the portions of food we got there were way smaller than what I used to eat
at first I still was hungry after eating but after a few days I got used to it and I actually lost weight
and even when I got home I still couldn't eat much cause I was so used to the small portion size but I also didn't need to eat much cause I was just satisfied
Yes, some people don't know how to think.
Thanks from Hong Kong
Thank you so much for all of your help. You have helped save my life. I appreciate you beyond words, Dr. Jason Fung.
This guy is so smart 👍🏻
Nice summary and reminder, thank you. As for the image at 0:42, don't give me ideas!!
Thank you for this video, it was just what i needed today!!!! I have type 2 diabetes and just started fasting last Tuesday. I ti unbelievable the difference in my blood sugars already
Welcome aboard! I found dr fung channel 3 months ago, I fasted and lost 15lbs. I used the app ZERO to track my fastjng and join the challenge in the app like fastjng for 16 hours a day 4 days a week. Etc it make me focused of reaching the goal of fasting instead of food. Now I am eating one meal a day no problem. Hope this help. And best wishes
Hi Dr. Fung! I'm new to IF. I was lucky enough to stumble upon a UA-cam video where someone was interviewing you. It made total sense to me. I'd like to thank you for your work, ur dedication to humanity, and for giving up your time so freely. I bought your book so that is helping me. My question is this (if you have the time to answer it - I actually have 2 questions 😁). My first is: I just turned 62, I'm 4'11 (barely) I weigh 139.9 on 12/27 @ my most recent doctor visit. I started IF on Tuesday 01/17. I fast during the day drinking coffee, tea and broth. I eat dinner between 5-6 & eat whatever I cook for my family. I don't go overboard or anything. Do you think I should increase this to IF to where if I have dinner on Monday at 5, do IF & not eat till Wednesday at 5, OR do you think what I have been doing, i.e., eating once a day should be sufficient? My second question is when I was at Costco, I saw a little box of 6 cans of Unsweetened coconut milk. I bought it, because it had zero sugar and only one carb per 1/3 cup and 12 grams of fat.... When I got home I didn't see this in ur book as an approved additives. I only would use a teaspoon or two. What are your thoughts. And thank you to you and All the Nepherologist around the world who took care of people like my Dad. You are the real Heroes/Superheros of the world. 💝 Thank you again, for your time.
Thanks for the great videos!
Of my 3 favorite creators on the subject of fasting your vids have the lowest amount of “triggers”
What I mean by this, is that you don’t show a bunch of pictures or videos of people eating or food items.
You did it once in this vid in the first few minutes, compared with your vid from about a year ago on the same topic; eating too much/ biggest mistake which I just watched prior, (thanks to the algorithms)
Any way, thanks for spreading the word, you do great work!
Thank you very much Dr. Fung #fasting the Fountain of Youth
Many thanks, Dr Jung. Yesterday I had dinner at 9:20 and I didn't eat again until 1:00 p.m today. As a result, I had good sleep and I feel so good today. I'm so grateful to you
Dr Fung is so awesome! Wish the MD I have to deal with were like him!
I didn't even realize I have been intermittent fasting for years. I thought intermittent fasting consisted of eating every other day. Oh well, I hadn't ever looked into it, so I never knew better. My brother and mom are diabetic. He decided to eat better to improve his health, he started eating the same things that I have always enjoyed. I'm hoping I will not ever be diabetic, but probably won't be because I am 51 and 135 lbs and LOVE the things that are good for me, don't like junk anymore. I did fast for religious purposes throughout the years, I guess that helped me unknowingly.
Eating every other day is a type of intermittent fasting.. but these days when people say "intermittent fasting" they sometimes mean time restricted eating.. The words "fasting" and "restricted" seem to scare people or make them jump to objections.. Tell them "eat no more than 3 times a day including any snack and don't eat at night" and they agree it's healthy.
Good on you for cutting out and no longer craving junk. That's more than half the battle for a lot of people.
@@AzaleaBee Thank you my friend! I have multiple sclerosis and I have definitely tried to make sure the stuff that goes into my body, including food, will not bring further damage. I have so much pain in my legs that I can't imagine what it would be like trying to walk if I hadn't eaten wisely earlier in life. One just never knows what the future holds and it's better to eat wisely than to throw caution to the wind.
Thanks for your kind words! God bless you and your family!
I'm about to start my post-Xmas fast (mainly for health/autophagy than fat-burning reasons), so thank you, Dr Fung. This is a useful and timely reminder. 😊
*Sooo, How's it Going????* From Eugene.
✨️ On day 3 of 5-day fast ...😚👌
I agree Dr Fung...
I mistakenly tend to overeat after my prolonged fasts or during eating windows of my intermittent fastings,
although it's NOT
junk-refined
processed foods,
but nevertheless
I do overeat on wholesome foods.
Obviously, I don't experience weight loss, but either remain in the same weight or gain some 🤷🏼♀️
Thanks for your help and greetings from Italy 😉💖

Hi Dr. Please make a video on what u eat on an average day. 😊
Finally a video less than 10 minutes :)
Dr. Fung - I’ve been looking for answers for type 2 diabetics who are thin and don’t need to really lose weight? What are they supposed to do? Can they still fast? I don’t see a lot of info for normal weight type 2’s and any special considerations for those kinds of diabetics in reversing their diabetes. Thank you!
Mistakes
1) Overeating after period of fasting. Could negate the benefit of fasting. Forget that u ve done a fast, eat normal as possible, normal amount.
2) Eating wrong diet- body use sugar or fat to burn energy.
3) Doing it alone- easier to do it with friends or family.
4)Triggers- emotional eating, go and do something else for example
5) The right environment- get out of the kitchen. Don’t work in kitchen
Thank u Dr Jason 🎉❤I’m currently trying to do IF 18/6 and 22/2 🙏
Could you make a video of the benefits of the different fasting windows?
Earlier in my fasting journey I used to be guilty of overeating when I broke an extended fast, which I would define as anything beyond 24 hours. Now, that I have been fasting for several years now, I have accrued more experience. I have been able to mitigate that gluttonous predilection, when breaking an extended fast, by eating a very lean high protein/highly fibrous meal as my first and second meal after an extended fast.
Yes it's the carbs that get you on that first meal. I like to eat just protein and fat that first meal. After a few hours I can eat more normally. I think that is the biggest issue people have with fasting.
Just came home from mountain hiking. I could never do it before. It was hard but I was able to do it. I believe this is because I have been fasting. I have just entered my 4th month and looking at photos taken today! I look and feel so different now. I becoming healthier❤ Thank you Dr.Fung! May God bless you!
