Thanks, I followed your instructions and it was very straight forward. only difference I made was to have the flames on the sword facing upwards. My Balrog is undercoated and ready for finishing off. I really appreciate your post!!!
Along with the balrog I have always wanted to paint a mumak from the Lord of the rings range too. There was always a bug grin on my face when they appeared in the films.
Fantastic work man, it's an epic focal point for the project and the conversion is absolute class. Taking notes about the paint job for my fire giant :)
Great work bud, the end result is absolutely superb! You definitely got the best part of the project to paint up.......... Poor Elston got the "short" end of the stick 😉
Inks through the airbrush is always glossy, so a matte or preferably a ultra matte varnish. Or you can do like me and have some ultra matte varnish in the ink while i thin it in the airbrush cup. Just a tip
Looks amazing, just wondering how you managed to get the sword and the whip on? On my model, both the whip and sword have the right hand joined. So if i put on the other hand, it will be backwards.
@@ThePickleJar Ahh yes you sure do, sorry haha I clearly skipped to the finished product without watching through. Serves me right! I will definitely watch it fully now :)
Such an awesome model, you did a great job! I've got thousands of figures I would love to tackle ... some day! Looking forward to seeing the other videos!
Great video mate. The mini looks stunning. I still need to get round to the stormcast dragon and the LotR Moria display stand. Too much to do, too little time. Keep up the great work
It'd probably actually be a good one to start with. Plenty of space to try different techniques and different textures. Especially if you wanna paint flame/fire :)
@@ThePickleJar Ah cool, I need to get some of those for my green stuff experiments. He came out great, all that salamander practise paying off. For the glossy paint one thing I learnt from vincy V is that you can hit it with some matte varnish and it will bring the gloss way down. Then you can just paint right over the varnish like normal. I had some minis which were super glossy from priming with rattle cans and I tried out the matte varnish and it really worked out.
@@ThePickleJar that's awesome 👌 I'm from Rawmarsh in rotherham. Love the channel mate. Been working on a lotr display for a while so I wanted to get some tips for a balrog. Absolutely top notch stuff. I've done a few dioramas for 40k there's a coffee table I've done on my channel and since I'm back into the middle earth pieces I'm looking to making a minas morgul diorama 👍
@@ThePickleJar yeah I can spot a South Yorkshire twang a mile off ha. Have a good one pal 👍 might send you a link across if I manage to finish the diorama for you to have a peak. 👍
NO NO NO Balrog does not have wings....from memory 'shadows spread around it like two huge wings' if that does not convince the nay sayers....it would not have fallen when the bridge collapsed and the book would have ended there in Moria....sorry to rant/rage there superb job despite the glaring departure from the story that most balrog models have...off to lie down in dark place....no sorry in a bright sunlit area free from goblins and ork kind
Just checked the book, here’s the section “The Balrog made no answer. The fire in it seemed to die, but the darkness grew. It stepped forward slowly onto the bridge, and suddenly it drew itself up to a great height, and its wings were spread from wall to wall; but still Gandalf could be seen, glimmering in the gloom; he seemed small, and altogether alone: grey and bent, like a wizened tree before the onset of a storm.” Definitely had wings :)
@@ThePickleJar sorry but earlier paragraph dispels that 'it was like a great shadow, in the middle of which was a dark form, of man shape maybe' and 'Glamdring gleamed, cold and white his enemy halted again, facing him, and the shadow about it reached out like two vast wings'
@@ThePickleJar lol absolutely, see this is how disagreements are settled, i still think balrogs do not have wings but your reading of the book convinces you of the opposite, part as folks should in harmony.... still a great book and your treatment of an inaccurate (see what i did there lol) model is still fantastic
@@ThePickleJar If you've seen the film as many times as I have you'd notice that his wings don't have any membrane or the flesh between them that's why every model or toy of the Balrog based on the film has never been accurate.
Dude, thanks so much for getting involved with the project! The Balrog turned out great !! Mind you don't go blind from shaking up your paints lol
😂 thanks for having me involved dude.
@@ThePickleJar Any time you need something doing let me know ;)
Matte varnish would maybe help. Looks great in the end though, great job

not just a fantastic paint job but the conversion with the sword is brilliant and certainly one to copy! Class!
Thanks very much!

This one is standing ready to be primed and painted.
Best video so far on how I won't him to look 👍👍👍
Wow, thank you so much :)
Sometimes inks go glossy. No idea why, they just do. Matte varnish usually works to bring it back into line.
Nice work on the whole thing.
Thanks very much!
Thank you , Josh ,
The Balrog ,(from Ral Patha ) , One of the first minis I painted , Just a fyi there ,
Old school, I see. Was that the "fully functional" Balrog, or the PG13 neutered revision? =^[.]^=
Nice! I’d love to see photos if you have them?
Wicked paint job on that “mini”. Turned out great! Time to make another one for yourself! 🤘
Cheers dude! Glad you like it!
Nice paint job on the flames.
I've got the metal version, trust me your not missing out unless you like filling massive gaps on a model.
hahahaha, I do not envy you

BAHAHA. that opening tho! Nice paint job that lava detailing is insane.
Haha, I was shaking paint!! 😂
Cheers man, I’m really happy with how it turned out :)
Epic paintjob! Though you turned the sword upsidedown :P
I did it that way round as I imagined him running forward so the flames would be behind
@@ThePickleJar makes sense then! Looks epic none the less!

If you dont want a glossy finish, why not just apply a clear mattle top coat at the end?
