- The Ultimate Games Workshop BALROG KIT BASH / Upgrade!!
I made a Diorama of the scene where Gandalf defeats The Balrog, Durin's Bane, on Durin's tower from The Two Towers movie, for the Two Towers 20th anniversary. I converted the Games Workshop models of Gandalf and The Balrog from the Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game to include LED'S, inspired by Fantasyset85 and @Boylei

This turned out great! Thanks for giving me a shoutout, you definitely outdid the scale of my project. Well done!
Thanks Caleb!! There where so many potential problems with this build that I just didn't have to think about.... because you solved them already haha. I watched your video quite a few times, especially when I was wiring up the Balrog. I just did exactly the same, no point in reinventing the wheel. Thanks again for helping me with choosing the right noodles etc I loved every second of this build. This was pure hobby for me :D
Gandalf vs Saruman at Orthanc Set I think 🤔
Nailed it ;) Well spotted :D
That is by far in my opinion! The best depiction of a Balrog I have ever seen. Well done.
WOW ! Thank you so much :D That really means a lot to me !! I just posted a new project today, Mirkwood. I really hope you enjoy it. Thanks for the encouraging comment!!
This is just beautiful... 😄
Ps. 5:10 Even though the Balrog does have wings in the movie the reason it can't fly is because
the wings dont have membranes.
which you can clearly see when it falls of off the tower ☺
So this is actually really freaking faithful to the movie😆
Thanks so much! I tried hard to get it to match the movie... I wish I had a few extra shots and angles to work with in the reference material. I paused and rewatched that 1 clip from the movie like a 100 times ... or more 😅
id say they did dradon style wings as smoke wings would be difficult to print
What a righteous conversion! Outstanding build all around…
Thank you so much!! I am very proud of this one... although my wife hate the site of it now. Sitting on the side in my kitchen lol
Hey Michael.
Wonderful. In my opinion your best model always. I love it. The lights are unbelievable. Really cool. It was a pleasure to me to send you the foam.
Best regards Chicken
Thanks so much mate!! I think it is my favourite project too :D And I love that foam you sent. It takes texture so nicely!
The editing in these videos are perfect. The gollum one I found particularly funny 3:09
haha Thanks :D
Incredible as per usual! Your strength of character to be able to destroy a build that in its own right is a masterpiece, to make a realistic ruin is always inspiring! I've no idea how you do it 😁
haha that was painful.... I was almost tempted to make a second one for the ruins haha
Wow!!!!! One of the best builds I’ve ever seen! Beautiful!!!
oh wow! Thank you so much :D
@@Nat1videos you are welcome 😊
Awesome build! Best Balrog I've ever seen!!!
Thank you so much :D
Absolutely Amazing!
Thank you so much :D
This is absolutely stunning!
Thanks so much :)
Awesome Tower and finished model.
Thank you very much!
Your attention to detail is truly incredible! Absolutely stunning piece and love the spin you used!
Thank you so much!
Absolutely incredible. I wish I had this in my house.
Thank you so much!
completely bonkers. love the smoke effects.
Thanks so much :D
@@Nat1videos I literally subscribed cause of this video. Too good with the light effects ^^
That's badass! Nicely done!
Thanks Knarb! Much appreciated :D
Fantastic video. I love my Balrog in this game. the way he manipulates the board by his mere presence .
Thanks!! Yeah, Balrog is a beast!! Literally lol
Love your videos! Thank you. So chill. Such great ideas. And great execution…of terrain and of vids!
Thank you kindly Paul! That is very encouraging :D
Yes! It looks perfect!!
Thanks so much :D
Watching again. Loved it and still love it.
Thanks so much Alan! Really appreciate that :D
WOW!! Such a beautiful piece. Well done!!
Thanks so much Ron!
Absolutely epic dude, paying homage to boylei’s and also making it grander and your own.
Well played !!
Thank you :D
I love the discussions about whether or not a "real" Balrog has wings! 🤣
Nice build - wish I had the space to do things like this.
Cheers!
Thanks !! The way to get around the space thing is make smaller things :D Maybe check out some N-Scale stuff, you can still make some awesome things at a much smaller scale :)
Incredible mate! Absolutely love it and what a huge piece of terrain to make too, you blew my mind a bit with the 3 Balrogs that fell to their death and having wings thing 🤣
haha cheers Dave... yeah it is a bit big. Not sure what to do with it now lol
Wow! Incredible build!!! Well done!
Thank you :D
That looks so cool and turned out amazing with the flickering lights.
Thanks so much :D
that Balrog is so dope, what a great build
Thank you :D
damn. this is crazy good! i have to say the montage of you destroying the build was too funny. painful, but funny.
The pain was real haha But it had to be done.... for the sake of realism and film accuracy :)
So much detail. I am impressed.
Thank you very much! The devil is in the detail
Amazing build! Love watching your vidoes with my partner and learning new things !!
Thanks Frankie! Happy Christmas by the way ;)
The ruining of the tower hit me right in the feels! I can empathize with that pain!
This turned out beautifully! And what a great bonus colab! Dafydd’s suggestion really highlighted the build nicely 🔥
Yes ! It was a perfect stroke of serendipity when Daffyd came over. Having a way to get those LED noodles to flicker is priceless
That turned out so amazing! Well done! Love this so much!
Thanks so much Emma! I loved making this one, every step was enjoyable :D
Absolutely awesome build! That snow looks so good...
Thank so much!! Yeah, make sure to check out Mels tutorial ;)
I’m at a loss for words. This is stunning. Amazing job, sir!
Thank you so much!
@@Nat1videos you’re more than welcome!
I'm glad I stumbled across this, excellent video. I am of the wings of shadow party myself, this interpretation is a nice medium that suits both the movie and books.
But, my reason for bring glad I watched it is because I was working on a mine build and had been going with a natural stone look which didn't seem right. The moment you showed the texturing you did to make it look like the stone was carved with pick axes, my mind suddenly flashed back to a tour we did of the Zennor tin mines during a hiking tour of Cornwall in the mid-2000s. I'd seen exactly that pattern of parallel gouges in the walls of the mine.
I think my subconscious mind had been trying to tell me I what I needed but seeing it in your video brought it all back. Thanks for that literal moment of inspiration.
wow that is so so cool! i am so glad you found this then haha I kind of felt the same when I came across that technique it really does create the perfect texture :D
Excellent!!
Thanks so much!
Wow, excellent work! 🤩
Thanks so much :D
Loved every second of this build, was a pleasure seeing it come together on discord and the Patreon updates. Both the scenery and the electronics are amazing!
Thanks Karl! A long build but I really enjoyed it too!! Very happy with the result :D
@@Nat1videos labour of love, man. 💪
@@Karlmakesstuff Will probably never build it again, so might as well get it right the first time :)
Just a thing of beauty…. Truly amazing work.
Thanks so much buddy! One of my favourites. I hope to get back to the crafting table more regularly soon, I have some cooler ideas I thinks :D
Super Arbeit 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🧝🏽♂️🧙🏽♂️
:D
Incredible work! This is awesome!
Thanks mate!! This one nearly broke my brain hahaha
Looks fantastic, great job.
Thank you! Glad you like it thanks for watching :)
Stunning dude really beautiful
Thanks :D
To be fair on the whole wings or no wings; I was surprised when I re-read the Fellowship not long ago the only to discover that it says both 'like wings' and also a few paragraphs later it says 'its' wings. So in truth Durin's Bane has wings; wings of shadow...
'His enemy halted again, facing him, and the shadow about it reached out like two vast wings.'
'... and its wings were spread from wall to wall...'
But i can certainly see why people think of them as physical wings, the way it is written.
Thanks for the comment !
:D
This came out great dude - really felt for you when you had to destroy part of the tower!
Cheers Dene! Yeah man, but had to be done! The scene just wouldn't look right if the tower was not in ruins :)
Absolutely sick bro💪😎
thanks so much :D
😱 fantastic job
Thanks so much Zach :D
I think this is my fav diorama of all time. Nailed it
Cheers bud! Might be my favourite thing I have ever made... toss up between this and the Zorp tower :D
Oh shite, glad that you linked this video to your latest video, I definitely missed this one. But holy shite, a double shite, that looks awesome!
haha thanks! Yeah, this project was intense but I love the result. Shame UA-cam didn't tell people about it...
Your editing is so smooth. The entire flow of the video feels so natural. So many camera angles, different type of shots, talking heads, timelapses. So much effort, but you make it look so effortless because it all fits so well. Great job on both the video and the diorama 👏
You have no idea how happy this comment made me lol 🤣🤣🤣 Yeah... its a lot of work. My wife thinks I'm crazy lol. Thanks so much for watching!!
Coming over from your TikTok! I love your spin on it!
ah ha!! Thank you Patrick! I remember your comment on Tiktok. Thanks so much for coming over to check it out! I really appreciated it :D
I absolutely love it!
Thanks so much Patty :D
Beautiful, love that stonework and how it blends so nicely into the rock.
Thank you!! :D
As a writer myself I believe leaving things in vague sense & leaving it up to interpretation for the readers is part of the fun & excitement of being a writer when creating worlds, you’re not answering questions but leaving questions behind for people to theorize about your work.
Though I do respect your take on the Balrog not having wings I however do enjoy them simply because they look great on the creature, overall I’m not a big fan on debates simply because they cause a divided fan base amongst many beautiful people who all love Tolkien’s work.
But overall I absolutely love your work my friend & respect your opinion fully, you always do beautiful projects.
Thanks !
Nice build!
In my memory Balrogs don't have wings. Think GW made them so we can use these in conversions of other minis we try to build (dragon, demon prince). -->More people will buy the balrog because of the wings.
Yeah I think we are on the same page with that :D
Amazing work!
Thank you :D
Gandalf is from "Escape from Orthanc" set (I believe that was the name, it was my very first lotr set), it also came with Saruman, Gwaihir and the Palantir
Spot on!
Looks amazing!!
Cheers Tim! :D
💯 % badass!
Thanks :D
'You cannot pass"... 'I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame of Anor. You cannot pass. The dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udûn. Go back to the Shadow! You cannot pass.'
The build looks absolutely stunning. I love the level of detail and the heart you put into it. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you dude!! I enjoy your content on Tiktok mate. Been loving your traps ;)
The effort matches the result. Just jaw droppingly beautiful.....whether the balrog had wings or big, floppy red shoes......you nailed it. That is screen worthy FX you've done. Amazing!
Thanks so much! If you know anyone who would give me a job in that area please let me know lol😂
“They fall. That just doesn’t make any sense if they’ve got wings”
Ostriches have wings. Penguins have wings. Emus have wings. A lack of ability to fly does not preclude the possession of wings. Perhaps a Balrog is just a flightless winged demon!
Ok ... so I concede the Balrog could just be a big angry penguin
I can’t even… this is too great. So proud of you bro. Also you need to send this to your GCSE English teacher… to hear you explaining literary tropes I almost teared up! Mrs Heaney and Mr Ramsey would be so proud right now! 🙌🏻
Thanks Joy !! haha I wasn't too bad at English literature and I really liked both Mrs Heaney and Mr Ramsey, great teachers. Was actually on track to study English literature at Canterbury University before I decided to "Be in a band" 😂
Haha! Maybe I have the wrong idea about you! I thought you chose the music path because you hated mainstream academics! Lol! Either way, proud sister x
That turned out amazing, well done on the conversions and the LEDs. The gandalf is from the orthanc set Vs saruman
Thanks! Yep, you nailed it .... I love that pose
Oh boy, I’ve been saving this since I saw you upload so I can have something fun (awful week with no heating and a flooded kitchen ceiling!) and it’s everything I needed!! Thank you for sharing this!!
Thank you!! That comment has made my day, it is awesome to know that people get something more than crafting tips out of these videos :D Sorry to hear about the kitchen, hope you get it all sorted soon !!
@@Nat1videos I both hurt for you while you were breaking your beautiful tower and laughed with the way you presented it, so yeah, it's made my day. Love your content and I'm so happy I found your channel. Hopefully I'll have some heating soon, otherwise I might take a pickaxe to the garden and see if there's a friendly balrog deep below the earth who can heat us up a bit XD (Also, not to fuel the wings debate, but @indeepgeek did a good video on that topic: ua-cam.com/video/3MoXKa9dz0Q/v-deo.html)
@@goblincavecrafting haha Balrog's are a good source of heat ! Thanks for the video, gonna watch it right now :D
Tu Truly amazing !
Thank you :D
What the heck this is amazing
Thank you :D
Realmente increíble! Eres un auténtico crack!!
Thank you so much :D
Amazing. I like your builds. If you search more ideas for builds, I have some. Make a Karazhan build from Warcraft or the Great Gate. There is a lot of little details, you can build these for a tabletop game scene and it would be awesome.
Thanks!! Those are some great ideas for sure. I have an ever growing list, I hope I get through them all haha
wow this came out soooooooo good !!! congrats !
Thanks Tine :D
My dear sir you look refreshed. I love seeing you work on projects that feed your passion. So so thrilled with how this project turned out. Love you dude
Thanks Zane!! I really loved this one, something I have always wanted to build and finally had built up enough techniques to give it a shot! The feeling is mutual ☺
Not only are the build’s getting better, but the editing! My goodness do you make it easy to follow along and understand yer method. I’m going to have to see that snow tutorial now too! Merry Christmas nat 1 videos and fam! 🖖🏻
Thanks Zach! Are you doing a build for our next craftu challenge...? The theme is Dangerous Scatter terrain ;)
I am always too scared to start working on builds like this, but when I see you work on stuff, I feel motivated and it gives me a lot of encouragement to start working on big projects myself. Amazing build!
Just give it a shot! You will find that once you get the ball rolling you can figure out the problems as you go!! Really worth just getting started ;)
Woah, love it
Thank you so much :D
Spot on diorama, the conversion work on the Balrog is pretty epic & matches description of it quite well.
Thanks mate!! I think to get it even closer you might have to just cut the wings off all together, but the bone structure makes a great armature to work with :D
Looks epic mate
Thanks man! Appreciate it :D
Even if it was the right choice, I would not have dared to destroy such a piece. Bravo!
haha thanks! Yes... it really was hard to break it down, but I'm glad I did in the end :) My next big build coming out in December wont get broken gladly :D
Amazing looking 'diorama' ! Am into LOTR at the moment and this is great inspiration.
Awesome!! Glad you enjoyed it :D
This was a great watch! Awesome build and paint job on Gandalf and the Balrog 🔥 🙂
Thank you so much 😁 I'll be checking out your Balrog in a little bit too, its on my watch list!
Splendid build, Michael. I've been enjoying seeing you go through the process, but the end result is still so much better than expected. Super sweet dio
Cheers Cross! Was fun hanging out with every one during the process of this build. Need to get back in and hangout again soon!
So glad you always take your time (and risk your nerves!) to make such epic builds like this Michael! I love the intricate layered details on the tower and obv the fire & smoke FX. The splendid snow texture only adds to the pile of awesomeness! XD
Thanks so much Martin!! I need to learn how to do epic, on a much smaller scale lol
amazing, great job, thx for video👍
Thank you!! And thanks for watching :D
This is amazing
Thank you so much ! :D
Incredible build michael. And loved the editing and the humor you use. Great video ❤
Thanks so much Wouter :)
Amazing work
Thanks so much, if you like this you will love my new video ;)
Nice build
Thanks Zachary :D
Mind blown! This is epic. That Gandalf model is from the Gandalf vs Saurman set, nice conversion by the way. The Balrog conversion is brilliant, love that flickering effect. Handy friend to have "just passing through"
Thank you! Yes thats the one, well spotted ;)
Beautiful build, and you convinced me that the second reference to “wings” in that chapter was a Tolkien literary trope 😊 this video, like your others, deserves waaaay more views 😎
Thanks Phil! Woo hoo I made a convert lol I would love more views.... no idea what I am doing wrong, think UA-cam hates me haha 😅
BTW love the font you used to display the Patreon names! What is it? 😊
@@philwilson4221Yeah its cool! So the title is called Hobbiton Brushhand and the scrolling text is called Luminari :)
Thank you! 😊
@@philwilson4221 You are welcome ;)
Looks crazy good man. The whole craft is impressive, but I love the shadow wings espacially, these turned out great!! Almost everything looks pitch perfect. Just... Glamdring has a cross guard and a pommel, man! >:D
Thanks mate! Yeah I did consider that, I may end up adding those details later... I'm sure I have a mini sword lying around that I can butcher
I'm a huge Lord of the Rings fan, I even have full sleeve Tattoo from the movies. Your model is outstanding. I've helped create with a friend a studio scale Star Destroyer. Your model captures that moment in the films so well. I'd give anything to own a Lord of the Rings diorama like this. I do have an 8' cave troll I made though. Have a great Christmas 🎄 🎅
Thanks Christian! I have considered some LOTR tattoos myself.... just can't decide what to get. Do you have Sauron ...?
I’m clearly on a hook to make a short video on how to do the electronics! Gimme a week!
That would be great! I'll post it out on all my socials when you do :)
Balrogs are Maiar which are shapshifters,if they want wings they can have them.
Thats a good argument! But you would think they would have shape shifted to have wings in all the cases in Tolkiens writings that they fell to their deaths... wings would have come in handy
Love it, quite the epic build & excellent video. Bravo, sir
Thank you kindly Steve! Had some fun with this one :D
Been looking forward to this one! Everything turned out awesome; especially big fan of how you decided to visually interpret the 'wings' to fit your vision of the book's description while still representing the movie 😄 My heart hurt a little for you watching you break the tower apart, but it was all worth it in the end!
Thanks Ali!! Yeah finding the balance between the books and the movies is always the tricky part. I'm glad that part worked out so well :D Thanks so much for the support, as always !!
Do you need to stop being so f******awesome because you're making the rest of us look s***! Big loves 🤘😎🔥
lol cheers Kev... not true but I appreciate the sentiment ;)
This is the coolest thing I’ve ever fucking seen. Period.
I'm always so impressed with your level of detail. Another amazing build
Thank you !!! Theres always room for more detail. The hard part is knowing when to stop lol
The exact quote is "... and the shadow about it reached out like two vast wings." But soon after it says that "suddenly it drew itself up to a great height, and its wings were spread from wall to wall". Verdict: it definitely has wings, but their substance seems to be mostly shadow.
Thanks for engaging in the debate!! Did you watch the bit where I talk about these passages specifically ? It comes at 13:15 in the video... but, this is a technique that Tolkien uses a lot in his writings. He first lays the seed with a simile or a literary trope to give clear indication that the thing he is talking about is "like" something. A comparison. Moving forward from that, because he has established it as a comparison he then refers to it in a metaphorical sense. So the second time round he mentions wings I believe he is actually using a metaphor. This would explain why Durins Bane falls instead of flies at the bridge of Khazad Dum. It also explains why Gothmog the Balrog falls instead of flying when he faced Ecthelion. Or when the people are fleeing Gondolin and are attacked by a Balrog and Glorfindel fights the Balrog.... again the cause of death, falling from a great height. Also in these 2 earlier passages where Balrogs are mentioned the Balrogs are not described as having wings, which would be mentioned as those texts predate The Bridge Of Khazad Dum so you would be describing the creature. Generally creatures with wings fly they don't fall. Unless you come to the argument from the premis that there are flightless birds that exist so there for the Balrog could be winged and flightless... Which would make the Balrog a giant firey penguin. Without flight the wings are pointless. Why would Melkor create creatures with wings that could not fly?
@@Nat1videos All excellent points, and I did watch the whole video. I always felt that the speed with which the Balrogs apparently responded when Morgoth was assailed by
Ungoliant, crossing the wide expanse of Hithlum fast enough to come timely to their dark lord's aid, suggests a speed of movement only wings could provide. But that is of course open to debate. As for the falling argument, Eagles and Dragons were also slain in battles and crashed spectacularly to the ground, and they definitely had wings. Alas we cannot ask the master himself, but I suspect even if he were still with us he would not have been inclined to answer this question to anyone's satisfaction. BTW, superb build, you are one of my favorite terrain crafters.
@@bradcraig6676 You make excellent arguments for your point of view! This was a pleasure to read this morning :D hmmmm it seems I will probably not leave you convinced...One thing that is for sure though is that wings do look cool. I really like the way Peter Jackson kind of went half way , with the bone structure there surrounded by shadow smoke and flame... I think he did it justice. Makes for a fun debate though! Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to write down your thoughts !! :D
@@Nat1videos I agree that Jackson arrived at a great compromise solution with the skeletal wings. I also enjoyed this interaction! Looking forward to many more awesome videos and possibly some more informed debates.
@@bradcraig6676 Awesome ! I'd like to include more stuff like that in my videos in the future... need some good ideas that could also tie in around craft projects. Any ideas ..? lol
