Just a correction: Persia didn't become Iran after the revolution. The king, Reza Pahlavi asked other nations to call Persia, Iran (which is what Iranians called their country for centuries) and they agreed to do so. Persia is a western alteration of Pars, referring to the tribe of Cyrus the Great, the Achaemenid Empire, and the region they were from. This name had been around in western books since before Alexander the Great even though it is not the country's name, Iranshahr.

Agree. But in fairness. If this regime went down, while the current dynasty on KSA is still in power. Something very bad will be happen. Both of them need to go down, altogether.
It was until the Genghis Khan's sons came about, after that it was always in a decline, a bit of a revival in Abbas's the second regime during the Safawid era, but he was mostly just: "kill everyone who says no" typa guy, so it went back to straight decline after that. The Islamists didn't turn Persia into Iran. Persia has always been Iran. The Shah changed the name internationally in 1935 while the Islamists merely made it official cause some people still called the country Persia.

@@fanzy1338 Educate yourself. Azeri is Iranian language descended from old median language and has nothing to do with us. We speak Turkic which is close to Turkmen and Turkish language.
Just one note: Persia already changed its official outwardly recognized name to "Iran" by 1935. Shah Reza Pahlavi was getting buddy buddy with Nazi Germany and as a way to promote shared Aryan ties between the Persian/Iranic peoples and Germanic peoples changed the official name of the country to "Iran" (land of the Aryans). However, "Persia" and "Persians" were always terms used by outsiders to describe the country and its people (starting with the Greeks). Internally, the country and its people was always known as "Iran" and "Iranians" since ancient times.

9:11 Persia turned into Iran in 1979??? Where did you get that exactly??? Our people have always called our country Iran and the request to the international community to refer to our country as Iran instead of Persia happened in 1934 though it didn't became the norm until after world war II. Also you underplayed the role Safavids had in Iranian history. Safavids were the first time in almost a 1000 years since Sassanids fell to Muslim Arab invasion that Iran had unified under a native dynasty and the Safavids were the first after Sassanids to call their domain "the state of Iran" and thus can be considered the foundation of the modern Iranian state. Also Safavids, Afsharids and Qajars, despite speaking Turkic dialects, were quiet different from Seljuks or other nomadic Turkic tribes who conquered Iran. Afsharids and Qajars had assimilated and mixed a lot to the point that they became Iranian and Safavids had partial Kurdish ancestry and were native Iranians not nomads, though they had two generations of political marriages with Aq Qoyunlu Turkomans and relied on tribes, many of them Turkic for their military.

@chad iranian Yes and no, the people of Iran are largely decended from those who have been here for thousands of years since genetic studies on the modern samples and comparisons with ancient DNA shows little change. But those people (the most famous of them the Kingdom of Elam) share little with modern Iranians in language and culture. The modern identity of Iran begins with the migration of Iranic tribes, a sub-branch of Indo-Europeans, they mixed with the locals and gave their language and culture resulting in the creation of the Iranian tribes the most famous of which were the Medes, Persians and Parthians. However the early Iranian dynasties didn't call their realm Iran. The Achaemenid empire called itself Xšāčā (Khshāchā) which simply means the empire, in those days Iran was a people and a civilization not yet a state. The first dynasty that created the Iranian nation state was the Sassanid empire. They called their land Ērānšahr, they had an state religion and language which was middle Persian. Meanwhile under the Achaemenid and Arsacid dynasties Persian or Parthian weren't even the official language, they were the court and royal language, the official language of both empires were Aramaic. So we can say that the Iranian race is about seven to five thousand years old or maybe older, the Iranian civilization, ethnicity and languages is three thousand years old and the Iranian nation is about 1700 years old. However, after the fall of the Sassanids Iran was divided or occupied for 850 years the Iranian national identity survived but it was dorment until it was brought back with Shiaism added to it when Safavids created their state which unlike the myriad of states in the 850 years called itself Iran similar to Sassanids. So we can say that the modern state of Iran is about 500 years old.
That's the most cope answer I know from debating with Persian Iranians. Azeris are ethnic Turks and the emperors of your Safavid dynasty and later on actually spoke Turkish as their mother tongue. Even diplomatic correspondence with Ottomans was done in medieval Turkish. And that's been the last 1000 years. So, no, your civ just ctrl c+v'd Elamites, rolled with it for another 1000 years and then were later on ruled by others, by Greeks, Arabs and of course even since by Turks. As a Turk I never cease to be amazed of how much Turkish TV shows are watches in Iran and how good the language is spoken over there. Your analysis of Iran's future heavily relies on a continuation of the current government. It doesn't even entertain the possibility that it could see a revolution and switch back to a Western aligned nation. In that situation Iran could rapidly claim a seat amongst the great powers of the world. It would become the West's most important ally in the Middle East, it would have a booming economy and would spend far less resources intervening in military disputes in it's neighbors. The revolutionary government is one of the most mismanaged in the world, far worse than either China or Russia, having completely run out of reasons for its population to support it. Crack downs will become increasingly ineffective as more people can not buy bread. Security forces will become increasingly disloyal as they are forced to harm friends and family and the regime has nothing to offer anyone anymore. They need a carrot alongside the stick but all they have is the stick at this point. Even if these protests don't overthrow this government, which they absolutely could, the protests that do are coming soon
The theocratic regime will not be toppled internally unless the basij and revolutionary guard power structure, whose existential fate is tied to that of the regime, is removed. The way I see it, even Myanmar's junta has a greater chance of being toppled as compared to Iran's regime, due to the alliance of ethnic armies and majority Bamar rebels. At least there's some form of military resistance. The protesters will have a good chance only if the conventional Iranian Armed Forces (Artesh) side with the common people, but the ensuing civil war will be long, catastrophic, and bloody.
@@touchdowne8522 We power groups betray their source of power all throughout history whether it's Khosarou and his new middle managers, the Ashanti Empire and their freed slave tuned bureaucrat class or Athelred and his newly minted noble families. All these entities bit the hand that fed them because the realities on the ground changed. As the situation gets worse and more and more basji and RG forces are isolated turning on the regime will become more enticing. Security forces and clergy are the only two power bases that the regime has backing left backing them. They have lost the rural poor, the urban working class, the intelligentsia, the bazaaris are neutral with low ranking bazaaris joining the protests, they have lost the middle class, what little remains of the landed class are still Shahists. If they lose either of the two that are backing them they will fall and every day these protests drag on the chance that one of these power bases switches sides gets higher
The Seleucid empire was a Hellenistic state that was founded by one of Alexander's generals. They might have controlled Iran and used a similar bureaucracy as them since Alexander mostly just took out the Persian leaders and actually wanted to govern in a similar style as them, but they were still definitely Greek
Also Persian is older than Seleucid empire as they use rule large empire but Funny thing is anyone who try conquer Persian only find themselves be conquered by Persian from Alexander the Great to Timurids That why there is no Arabisation in Persian/Iran is because Persian absorb them into Persian, they only adopt Islam and nothing else
the one thing that does not unify us at all is religion. what unify us is the shared hatred toward the ruling regime which took iranian people hostage for the last 40 years, and after that although iranian people might not all be persians, they all consider themselves iranians despite the different backgrounds that they have.
The narrative in this video is somewhat simplified. It is an interesting interpretation of the Persian/Iranian history. In Iran, we studied history from middle to high school and each grade just covered an epoch. There was no overlap. Only significant events in each epoch were covered in detail. There was simply not enough time to cover it all in six grades of schooling. There were kings and rulers whose names were just rattled off without any explanation of what happened during their reign. I remember thinking to myself why are they ignoring these lesser sovereigns? Surely something important must have happened during their reign!!😄
@@michaelstone5298 No. Sorry about not clarifying the context of my experience which happened under monarchy. The Arab conquest was portrayed positively even under monarchy because it made Iran Islamic. As let's say January 6s there is a radicalization that happens when someone's telling you what you want to hear. Not necessarily. What is the truth?
as an Iranian who lives in Iran, I must say your information was so true. But the thing is our current government isolated our people, making global economy so difficult for ordinary people but themselves. they can easily import industrial goods and sell them at any price they want, which is very expensive considering average salary of Iranians, but makes the government more and more powerful each day, which is not beneficial for us. Islamic Republic (Islamic Dictatorship to be honest) was faced with so many protests back in the 70's, but they were able to win over. now in 2020's, they face a much more difficult situation, as they're not likely to change their policies because they're bound to their Islamic ideology, but the majority of population, especially the youth, don't believe in any religion and demand a democratic, secular government.

Iranian people should fight for their freedom, like their past they should continue to stay unit and try to make Iran the power hub of Middle East.

Nice video. I hope you will make one about Italy some day. Personally I have no sympathy for the Iranian government, and I find sad and disappointing that a country of such ancient and noble civilization is ruled so badly. Despite this, in politics one should never create empty spots without knowing how to fill them. I think that the government of Iran should reform itself, abolishing its most backward and unpopular policies, and follow the example of China towards modernization. Iran could become a democracy, but it could also end in a civil war like Syria. This is a dangerous moment. The future scenario you prospected is quite realistic. Historically for the last two thousand years the Middle East was divided between two empires. One was based in Iran (Sasanians, Seljuks, Safavids...) and the other in Anatolia (Eastern Rome and later the Ottomans). Between them there was a network of client states, like Armenia, Georgia or the Ghassanid and Lakhmid kingdoms of Arabia, fluctuating between the orbits of the two empires. I think it is very likely that future developments will mirror this ancient scheme.
@@ShubhamMishrabro this is what I said: the example of China. It seems to me too the most likely option. If the mullahs want to remain in charge they will have to change something. At the end they could end up earning from this too.

As for my country I can describe Iran in this way: a country with great potential and great problems. From geopolitical standpoint, life in Iran is doomed to be like a roller coaster. Just one note:
Persia already changed its official outwardly recognized name to "Iran" by 1935.

So you just wanna be western ally, like Saudis?

I pointed that out too in a few other things.
This was under the theocracy I take it? And they portrayed the Arab conquest is a good thing if so?
@@michaelstone5298 No. Sorry about not clarifying the context of my experience which happened under monarchy. Not so much due to any specific reason, but as a kid I was pushed into the Bible and church and god and religion and as a psych major I've always found people's actions and mental states when it comes to religion is sometimes the same.
Islamic Republic (Islamic Dictatorship to be honest) was faced with so many protests back in the 70's, but they were able to win over. now in 2020's, they face a much more difficult situation, as they're not likely to change their policies because they're bound to their Islamic ideology, but the majority of population, especially the youth, don't believe in any religion and demand a democratic, secular government.

every iranian person i’ve met are super educated and very secular. It’s awful how that government treats its people. An amazing nation with rich history held down by a religious dictatorship. Maybe im bias since i’ve only talked to ex-pats, but most of them detest the government.
As an Iranian I agree… they’re abusing us and banning internet
We’re basically a North Korea with food and houses
well it makes sense if you've only talked to expats, those who dislike the government leave or are leaving en masse, those who do like the government stay
@@mahmoodshariat9069 and dont forget! we can still travel and internet, atleast better then Nk lol.
I think iran will follow what gulf countries did especially Saudi Arabia. Dictatorship but modernization.
@@ShubhamMishrabro this is what I said: the example of China. It seems to me too the most likely option. If the mullahs want to remain in charge they will have to change something. At the end they could end up earning from this too.
But normally pretty much all revolutions or wars in the mountain fort settled quite nicer than others. The syria situation had outer influence which I don't think it'll ever happen to Iran, most of the people rather be democratic and... I don't think Europe and USA wouldn't want another rich oily ally that actually thinks like them.
@@ariamh823 I don't think that this is a concern, because nobody thinks like us. I don't expect Iranians to overthrow the mullahs and suddenly become Westerners. The only Western-like country in the region is Israel, and even they are very different from us due to their peculiar situation. I don't know much about revolutions in mountainous countries, but it's a fact that the most famous revolutions happened in plain ones, see France and Russia.
Agreed
since your discussing Iran’s uncertain future, could you do one with discussing Afghanistan’s fate, possibly?
Well they are in most problems right now in terms of moving up the ladder. While other countries are figuring out measures to secure their future, Afg still has the task of building the proper concept of the nation itself. Hate to say this but it is just a region at the moment up for grabs for many influencers.
This was great observation by you, great video.
There was just one point that Iran has always been Iran it didn't became Iran in 1979 ; what happened was that "Imaperial state of Iran" became "Islamic republic of Iran".
Those songs man, very funny and nostalgic 🤣 good job man, enjoyed it 👍🏽
3:51 It's actually Persian gulf.
But it's surrounded by arab countries and it's not persia anymore it's iran
@frayze5142 1- The country that has the most coast line of Persian gulf is Iran
2- "Persian" refers to a region in Iran not the name of the country
3- historically and officially it is Persian gulf and nothing can change that.
@@ARMAN-rv1er The Gulf is Arabian regards of what anyone think because every place is known by its people, and the Gulf is Arab because Arabs live on its eastern and western coasts, while the Persians are historically residents of the Iranian plateau and do not exist on its shores!!! I love Arabs for three reasons: because I am Arab, because the Qur’an is Arabic, and because the language of the prophets and Muhammad (pbuh) is Arabic
@frayze5142 It's internationally known as Persian gulf. If you go to school in literally ANY country they will teach you it is Persian gulf. That's officially accepted in the world. Such a thing can't be ignored because "arabs live there".
By your logic it should be called Isreal because Jews live there.
@@ARMAN-rv1er Keep dreaming. Arabians are there from Morocco to Arabian Gulf. Izrael is illegitimate anyway
Considering that protests are still going on in Iran, it is very uncertain.
Legendary music selection you definitely did your homework.
Hey it might being interesting as you did it with Sierra Leone and Bostwana , a comparison between Dominican Republic and Haiti.
Absolutely! This would be a perfect topic for h0ser
The DR is doing good by caribbean standards and alright by Latin American standards, haiti is…well you know.
People like to think that Alexander the Great conquered an amazing amount of land but the truth is he just conquered the Persians land as other empires had done before him.
Iran has a history of people just coming in and making themselves at home.
Persia did the same. They conquered Mesopotamia and built there culture and writing systems based on them

The Greeks really just used the roads already built by the Persians to conquer the same exact lands, then they immediately collapsed when alexander died, they didn’t contribute much to the region.

clarification: iran isnt 94% shi'a islam, thats just the governments statistics
other polls that get the peoples input shows a drastically lower number
personally I think less than 30% identify as muslim, atleast in urban areas
@@knotdead5783if 70 percent are not Muslims then they are the majority? Why can't u do anything about it then? After decades of protests, one would think u would made progress. But I literally see no changes.

@iambatman.5894 you have no idea how a religious apartheid works. The minority has guns and the majority are the people. I live in Iran and have seen plenty of progress from the 2009 protests to 2020
@@knotdead5783 can u name some. All I see is doom and gloom. And I researched a bit. No of Muslims is like 96 percent and the study is backed by CIA. Funny thing is Countries do need Iranian oil, the problem is the US is trying their hardest to break the economy of iran which also means denying Iranian exports.
Awesome video, you explained everything just right
Can you make a video about countries with the best population pyramid ?
The theocracy is our fault. In the west, especially UK and US, we should acknowledge that we’re significantly to blame for their current horrible theocratic government. Our western leaders were motivated by greed to support the Shah against the will of the Iranian people, and that led to the theocracy as backlash.
Please learn history-
educate yourself before spreading woke crap like that about the Shah.
and don't forget Afghanistan too.
Without US intervention in the 80s by funding jihadist groups, there would be no Taliban in the first place.

Without US intervention, Afghanistan would have been another Soviet bloc state like Ukraine and the Baltics. Never mind the rest of Central Asia.
@@shauncameron8390 that would be much better than having a religious nutjob roaming around the city to find women who don't cover their bodies and stone them to death. Did you see that incident happening in former Soviet bloc states like Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and other -stan countries where Muslims are the majority?
Iran is just a Tragic Story. They have a very rich Culture, a very interesting history and the people are usually very kind. Even if Pahlavi was a dictator, what happened to this Country now is just tragic. Still Iran will be in my heart, even if i am not iranian. Greetings from Germany ❤
