As a veteran Vietnam Huey pilot, no doubt the Huey is the DC-3 of helicopters. Reliable, reliable, reliable and still flying today. Miss it. Wish I could pilot it once again today.

The sound of a Huey would sometimes bring tears to my dad's eyes. He didn't talk about Vietnam much, but when he was lying in an LZ with his guts riddled with shrapnel waiting for a medevac to Nha Trang, he said the sounds of the Hueys coming in was the thing that gave him hope. Salute to all the brave men who flew into Hell to save lives!

Welcome home all you bro Vietnam vets. We rode out in 4 of them, 6 men in one. Rode one down as it spun, from a few hundred feet. Repelled in about a third of the time. I always look up when hear a chopper, and some few times its a Cobra or Huey. To this day I'm honored to have been in that 2/17th Cav unit, out of Camp Eagle. Blessings to the families who lost someone. Great job, to those who fought. Thanks for showing this beautiful masterpiece.

When I hear the sound of an H-model, I get flashbacks, I was a Crew Chief for C-troop 1/9th. Cav. 1st. Calvary Division Airmobile, stationed at Phuc Vihn Republic of South Viet Nam, from August 1969 to August 1970. I started out crewing LOH-OH-6's, flying hunter killer teams, after 6 months in country I began crewing Huey H models, we inserted and extracted LRRP's, both US and South Korean, inserted our own contingency of Infantry recon soldiers. Our main job was reconisance. I crewed 2 different H models and one LOH, I loved flying in the Helicopters That I crewed, the Huey never let us down neither did the LOH, there is no other sound that gets my heart beating faster, I know that every one who crewed a Huey fell in love with this Iconic Helicopter.

Michael, your name sounds familiar. I was Cav44 in Charlie Troop at the exact time you were there. I can still remember some of the slicks' tail numbers (definitely remember Tommy C.'s 056, my own ship 094 (Danny was crew chief), and one we called "Gunky", 617. I don't want to mention full names in public space. Can you believe it's almost 48 years ago? And you can still hear the sounds and even smell the smells some times...

I remember getting a ride in one of these back in the early-80s when I was maybe 8 or 9 years old. We were at an airshow in Germany and they were giving rides in the Huey and the Chinook helicopter. I got to ride in both, being my first rides ever in a helicopter. Back then, the Huey was still very prominent in the U.S. Army. We lived in Germany for a few years and these Huey's were everywhere. The Hueys and the A-10 Warthogs were always flying overhead. You got used to it.

Australian Army has gone to Black Hawks but the Huey will always be my fav. Top work on the Huey boys.

Great job on the restoration - looks and sounds as many of us easily recall and will never forget. Nice also to see my former unit on the nose - 1st Cav, 1/9 - only thing missing was a yellow triangle, square or circle on the front door panel to indicate A, B or C Troop. I flew D & H models in 67/68 with Charlie Troop Lift and was a Contact IP at Hunter for the remainder of my service - early out in Dec. 69. Way to go Army Aviation.

This video fostered a re-birth of appreciation for the Huey. In A&P school we had to work on a Huey, which always had stuff going wrong with it and even the instructors were dumbfounded many times at how to correct various problems. We had to do basic electrical diagnosis and correction and the Huey has many, many miles of wires and was a circus of electrical confusion. We also had to do rotor work, engine, structures and systems work and once a year we brought it into "flying" condition (barely), with our reward being watching it start and hover for a minute or two at the hands of a grizzled, old, but Huey-loving Vietnam Vet. Getting ready for that annual hover was true crunch time at TSTC & we often had to work late, with many problems whose solutions proved difficult to find, again, even for the instructors. Most of us ended up hating the Huey, but as proven by this video, it is really a spectacular machine when restored, maintained, flown, and loved properly. Such was not the case with a bunch of A&P students just trying to pass a course.

Absolutely beautiful! Winnebago County has Rescue One, A Black with a Blue stripe H model here in Northern Illinois. When She leaves Greater Rockford Airport (Chi-Rockford Airport...sigh) Her flight path carries her directly over my home when she flies to Midway Airport or the Chicago area. I hear her from the time she gains altitude (approx. 15 miles) and Day or night, I am outside to see and salute the sexy lady. On the return path, I hear her about that far out...and the same pattern happens. The crew has seen me AND my wife many times...I have taught her to LISTEN for the sound of a Huey. WHERE it is at, and HOW FAR it is out...and if it is OVER US already. Reason? If I EVER need a rescue, and they call out a Huey....I KNOW I am going home. NOTHING is as beautiful sounding...and NOT ONE aircraft makes me still feel 5 years old like these old girls. I am a HUGE railroad buff, and other than the sound of a Electro-Motive Division SD40-2, especially hauling heavy load in run-8 (full throttle, amp meter in the red) The Huey will beat it out in my heart. I wanted to fly them, but my life took another path. About the time this video was uploaded, in fact, in August, my Wife and I went to Volk Field in Baraboo, Wi. and I achived a lifelong dream...a flight in a real Viet-Nam Combat Vet Lady of the Sky. As the Aircraft began to come to life, and the rotors began to beat the air into submission....I cried like a baby and I'm NOT ashamed of it...I realized the flight crew were all Viet-Nam Vets, and had served together, plus the countless missions she faithfully served all who flew on her into Combat, some to Hospitals, some to their somber final flights to the hereafter When the "Magic" happened and the ole' gal lifted off, I SWEAR I could feel the presence of those before me. As we flew over the Central Wi. area where I worked for the RR. I wondered just how many had looked out the open doors down into the woods, and could still see the flick of a Deers tail or even people on the trails. As we flew, I heard EVERY pitch change, every different "slap slap slap" of her continuing to win the battle over gravity, until once again, she landed safely for us to get off and the next batch get on. I "petted" her and told her 'THank you sweetheart!" to which the Crew Chief asked me "Did you serve?" I replied, No sir, but my best friend who is more my brother than anything has been a Crew Chief on a Jet Ranger (OH58) when the Wall Fell (actually IN berlin to pick up two of them..that's another story) and a Huey for a week, a Chinook for a Month...where he constantly pumped hydraulic fluid into it (joke) and then, for many years a Blackhawk. We had a constant ribbing about a REAL Helicopter vs. what HE flies in....and the whole Yea, I seen your "Real" helicopter on a Pole....while mine flew all weekend! THe Crew Chief laughed, then asked me why I had gotten so emotional? I told him how much their service means to me, and I had thought of Mark, my friend who was on duty that day. I then Told him and all of the crew there THANK YOU for your service...and the beautiful lady they keep alive for all to enjoy and learn the lesson that Freedom IS NOT FREE!....It was a dream come true for me....so I wanted to share with you that If I ever need a Search and Rescue....I pray to GOD what I hear is what almost Four generations have heard....that SWEET SWEET sound of a Huey beating the air into submission, saying "I'm Coming...just listen to me, and I'll get you home!" THANKS so much!.

The H was a D that was given a better motor when they rebuilt it back in the states. In Bien Hua they took the Boom off turned it around and crated the bird for return on a ship. They'd stack'm up like beer cases 4 or 5 high, and Uncle Sam didn't do that till the thing almost couldn't fly anymore. Never dis the chopper pilots 'cause I can attest that a lot of us were in hospitals in minutes of getting hit thanks to the risks of those men took landing those beat up old contraptions in places no one sane would ever go. When you didn't make it, the hospital threw your carcass into a conex container along with all the other uncleaned unclaimed meat, I once had to root through them to get the dog tags from a few of my buddies it gave you a strong stomach for the full Vietnam experience, there was no Top Gun music playing while you did that, but the stink got ya attention pretty good.

Nice video sir. In the early 80's we lived outside an army base and my first memory of seeing a Huey was on my little brother's baptismal celebration. The loud thud of a Huey that flew over scared all kids running into the house while I stayed out and marveled at the sight and sound of this war bird. I was hooked ever since. Now at 37 whenever I hear an approaching Huey I would still stop at whatever it is I'm doing and I'd run out to catch a glimpse of the passing bird.

Apparently, the story goes, when they arrived into service in Vietnam they were shipped in crates and assembled on shore. The crates were mistakenly marked "HU-I" rather than "UH-I" (Utility Helicopter series I) so the name HUI (later Huey) stuck. When I visited the perfume river in Hue, central Vietnam, in 2017 I sat on the bank of the river and soaked up the serenity. I quietly hoped one would whiz by....one can but dream.

Jimmy Hendrix, Machine Gun. Stepenwolfe. Most popular song, as you know, We Gotta Get Outa This Place, If It's the Last Thing We Ever Do. Girl there's a better life for me and you.

My father maintained Hueys at the Niagara Falls NY Army National Guard base for over 20 years. He restored as an SSG. I spent a lot of time at the base with him watching the Hueys being maintained and taken out on ramp so the guys could start them up and the pilots could take them up for a flight.

That distinctive blade sound that the UH-1 made meant two things to two different peoples. To the enemy, it meant a world of hurt was coming. To our soldiers, it meant home.

    • @NaYawkr
      @NaYawkr 5 років тому

To the NVA and VC it meant they needed to take careful aim 'cause they knew we were nearby, to the poor dumb bstds riding them we were bullet stoppers by trade commuting to work in a big noisy slow moving target.

So its not the chopper, or the sound, but the memories they illicit. I have seen allot of TV pin Stress, bad memories, and PTSD to the Huey. Largely due to its iconic image, role, and sound. I always thought that was the stuff of movies. But now I have learned that was accurate, more so for the boys inside of em.
      Thanks for your service.

Hanchey Field,Fort Rucker,Alabama,,,up until I retired 2 years ago I was a civillian helicopter mechanic. At least 2 or 3 times a week Flatiron Huey would bring precautionary landing victims back to the field,so they could drive their POV home, after writing up a report.19 out of 20 times I would stop whatever I was doing to go bathe in the rotor wash as it taxied by hangar 209.I love the Huey aircraft, the sound it made and remembering that it was my fathers helicopter!

@Hugonorge08 Actually, No, since this Huey is an original Vietnam issue. Moving the tail rotor to the right side was only incorporated later after the war. Moving it to the right side was done to increase the effectiveness of it. If you look most original war Huey's, the tail rotors are all on the left side.

Infantry Grunt here, in 68 and 69 we flew on D model Hueys the H was what the brass parked their butt in so they could orbit above, get in the way of our ground support, and gawk at us getting shot at. I was in the 82nd Airborne's 3rd Brigade and like almost everybody who served with me, we were all Draftees with US Military ID numbers not the RA' s that proved you volunteered for this like a dope. Some of those old birds were decrepit, and some couldn't even take off with a full load even after the doors had been stripped off them. No heroes in any of this, we just did what we had to, it wasn't like we had a choice. After 25 combat missions they did send me an air medal after I got home because if you survived 25 times you should have proof your luck held out that long. The REMF's didn't get those shiny metal thingys because they nevertook any chances. In fact we were told that for every bullet stopper like us in the field there were 8 of those REMF's eating the hot chow all day. That sounded about right and they gave the CIB's to everybody so don't let having one fool ya, tell'm you wanna see their air medal. when they can't you know you got yourself a REMF pretender. R=Rear, E= Escheon, M= Mother, F = . . you can figure that one out yourself.
