Kristoff Bjorgman Even on black and white film Diana’s hair should be black. The original comment is referring to the incorrect casting for the character.
I have always loved Anne of Green Gables. I think it is very sweet, touching, romantic and old-fashioned. It portrays times past when values and character mattered and when tradition and culture were appreciated and honoured and it really touches my sentimental, overly romantic heart. I have never seen this film but I would love to since it seems very good!
+Ivan Walters An earlier silent version of Anne of Green Gables (now lost) actually set the story in the United States and had Anne mistake a skunk for a kitten! It makes me think the producers in both cases read the book and just elected to pick and choose what they wanted (why??). See anneofgreengables.wikia.com/wiki/Read:Is_This_My_Anne.
I love this version ! The actress changed her name to Anne Shirley as her stage name in real life. I appreciate all versions of this movie ! I think Anne Shirley the actress plays Anne of Green Gables perfectly !
Tom Brown (Gilbert) and Anne Shirley aka Dawn O'Day both began their careers in the silent era. They made a cute onscreen couple and they were both talented actors. It's hard not to compare this film to the Sullivan miniseries but it was made in the 1930s and sensibilities were different.
Lucy Marous split ends I think to significantly or represent how she was neglected as a child (no one put in the effort to help her get properly groomed or cared enough about her to teach her how to properly keep her hair healthy) before coming to Green Gables.
This is the second best version after the 1984. The actress was perfect. Not just anyone can play Anne. She reminds me a little of Elizabeth Taylor in Little Women 😊
Hannah Chun it’s interesting you say that, because I actually said earlier “what if Judy Garland had played Anne and Mickey Rooney had played Gilbert”.
I didn't know there was a 1934 version, i only knew about the 1985 version which I love. It makes sense when I think about it though, the book was written in, 1908 i think, so it makes sense that there were earlier screen versions of such a popular series.
Courtney Reeves thank you. This would be my ideal cast... Judy Garland as Anne Shirley Lana Turner (in a black wig), Deanna Durbin, or maybe even Heady Lamar as Diana Mickey Rooney or Jackie Cooper as Gilbert
1:51 That reaction is as hilarious as the 1985 adaptation. However, a single hair pulling hasn't ever done unto her. The novel says otherwise. Also, a Diana Barry being so blondy makes me sigh so hard that I can say "haaai" while doing so.
2:52 gotta like that annoyed smirk that Anne gives Phillips right there. And her erasing all that writing after filling up the whole board. And good thing she corrected his misspelling of her name. That also happens in the 1985 version. Plus, though this doesn't actually happen in both films, there's when, in the original story, Phillips criticized Anne's bad spelling. But here, it should be that due to him spelling her name incorrectly after she had just told him how it's supposed to be spelled: her spelling is bad? What about yours in that regard? You're a Teach and should know how to do these things. That's a comeuppance towards you if I ever saw one.
Omg I know this comment is 2 years old but I was thinking the exact same thing. Though Rob is way better looking and I think they seem to look alike because of their noses, they’re kinda similar
This is pretty much the same as the Megan Follows version, the girl playing Anne in this 30's version sort of looks like Megan Follows too. I still prefer Megan Follows though, she is the only Anne Shirley IMO. :)
Exactly. A lot of this film's plot is what the 1985 version actually copied from this one. So in a way, that version is a remake of this film. I also like both versions.
That crazy moment when that teacher is speaking about my country, and i am listening to him instead of watching Anne and Gilbert....Wow geography of Europe seems to be really different back then
there were actually many versions before the 1985 one. Including a 1979 anime series. I recommend it. It's available on here in Japanese with English subs. And it's known to be the most accurate to the original story.
If you look it up, the actress who played Anne in this version was 15/16 when she played her, so she’s still a teenager (although quite a bit older than she should be) however, the person who played Gilbert was 21...😬
That’s how he was at first in the books though. Even in his first introduction, he was picking on a girl in class. It wasn’t until after Anne smashed her slate over his head that he changed
I was reading a manga about this story and no idea it’s a popular story from a book and has few films. I will go watch all those films if I can find, I have Netflix so I can watch the new one .
Enjoy! You will find that the adaptations are all quite different, though still entertaining. In particular, the 1985 miniseries with Megan Follows is very popular. I recommend reading the book too, since there's a whole series!
It would make sense for Diana to be blonde back then. And Gilbert Blyth In this classic is so handsome. I've seen the later version with Megan Follows I'm it and its wonderful.
Like McHobbit said, Diana was written specifically as a raven haired girl. That's one reason Anne admires her so... because Anne wishes that her hair were black or at least dark brown. To stray that far from the novels is very odd, and I really don't know why it would make so much sense for a girl to be blonde back then than it would during any other era. Maybe I misunderstood what you meant. Anyway the actress who played Diana in the '85 miniseries was perfectly cast, in my opinion. :) I like the Anne and Gilbert in this version and in the '85 version. Overall I prefer the '85 production. :)
I can see what you mean by this. Beauty standards change over the years, and Diana is meant to be conventionally beautiful. In the 1930s, when this movie was made, blonde hair was exactly that.
+Mc Hobbit exactly. Also, Diana having dark hair was too important in the book's storyline to have it be any other color. Anne makes a huge deal out of it.
You've got a point, especially because Anne ends up with green hair because of it. Mind you, if when the movie was made dark hair wasn't considered beautiful, it wouldn't work, because Diana is supposed to be beautiful.
Seriously they couldn't even cast Diana as a brunette??? It's a black-and-white no one would even be able to tell the difference.... But blond? AND light blonde at that too SMH
@@crazysingingchick precisely. If there was one thing Anne hated, it was her red hair being made fun of. And we should be aware of when she lashed out at Mrs. Rachel Lynde for doing the same similar thing to her (in this film, though, she is changed to Mrs. Rachel Barry, Diana's mother. They literally combined both those two characters into one in this film). What Gil did was worse than that part.
