Poor Planning, Beautiful Outcome! - Wood Turning

- This is a piece of FOG (Found On Ground) wood. Maybe some of you recognize it and can let the rest of us know what kind of wood it is.
I made a mistake early on and then had to cope with it and adjust all the way through the turning of this bowl. I hope I can remember to be more careful with my next piece! Finished in shellac.

If there's ever a guy that consistently can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, you're it! Outstanding save!!!
Thanks, John! 😊
Bradford pear. This was the base cut-off of a sucker branch which grew tight to the main trunk, so not truly a crotch piece. It came down in an ice storm several years ago and was at the curb, free to take. I sent it to Phil because I knew there was something gorgeous and unique in it, but I couldn't see it. He discovered what it wanted to become!
Thank you, Phil, for revealing what an ugly chunk of firewood can be! Much like Cinderella and her Fairy Godmother...... 😜 😉 Thumbs up 👆
I never would have guessed that, Dave! Thanks for the info and cool story to go with it! Oh, and the wood! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Man, I'm here for ya! Just can't do videos.
It’s always impressive when you show us how to work through mistakes. We all make them but as my first woodshop teacher said “the mark of a true craftsman is how they work through the mistakes”. YOU sir are a true craftsman!
You can always count on Phil to make a silk purse out of a pigs ear!
"It's going to become something, let's find out out what it is". That's what I like about you. You don't have a preconceived idea of what the wood should be. You let the wood become what it's supposed to be! Thank you for your talent!
I wish more folks could understand that, Paul, thank you! 😊
Once again you have turned an ugly, odd-shaped piece of mystery wood into something useful and beautiful. I am never disappointed with your videos.
How nice, thanks John! 😊
You take on the most awkward pieces and always seem to get something nice out of it. Well done, brave sir.
😊
Phil, you don’t have a bowl, you have a dish!😀
OK
It looks like your followers are trying to challenge your wood turning abilities. You saved another piece of wood from the fire pit. Great job, keep up the great videos.
😊
Gorgeous. A holiday candle with holly and mistletoe as a side piece.
😊
If this was a mistake , it was a fortuitous one. this is a beautiful bowl, and I love it, pin hole and all.
Great, thank you, Charlotte! 😊
Phiul, ever since I started watching your videos I've looked at my firewood pile in a completely different way!
That is awesome, David! I like to say, there is no such thing as firewood if you have a lathe. 😊
Good morning, Phil.
Phil, "If your tools aren't this sharp, you're not having any fun." Very true. This is a great video, a suspense thriller with a touch of humor. Your laughter is contagious. I really enjoyed watching this piece of art being created. Excellent.
Thank you, Ray, I'm glad we could spend some time together! 😊
Always a pleasure to see what you can find in a piece of wood - ANY piece of wood
Thanks for the visit, Joseph!
Hi Phil,
I hope you get feeling better. I'd like to tell you that I miss you're pretty face but it's really your voice and demeanor that is anchoring. Thanks for that.
Life gets tough sometimes, and your channel is a nice, safe, entertaining and positive place to rest for a while.
I don't miss you yet cause you have enough older videos but you are missing...
I hope you feel better.
Wow, thank you, Kyle! I've had my final chemo treatment a couple days ago. Now just have to wait for it to wear off and maybe I'll be much better. 😊
Also, with the wings on it I'd use it as a lap fruit bowl. Call it designed that way since you're keeping it yourself 😄
😊
Part of the charm of this community is that everyone is so willing to admit their mistakes, show how they fixed them, and move on. It makes me feel better about my (many) failures 😂. That is a lovely bowl Phil 🌞
Thanks, Ray! 😊
You never cease to amaze.
Great to see you doing what you love.
God is great 💜🙏

My brother once said; "when you make a mistake, just say oops and things will turn out OK" (there's a story that goes with that, too long to tell)
You said oops, and look what happened. It proves his point. '-)
OOps! LOL
I bet you have hundreds of silk purses by now!😃👍🏻👍🏻
A few for sure, Mike! 😊
Phil does it again.. I held my breath every time you took a little more off on the inside.. :)
😊
Boy oh boy ... I've never been so nervous watching someone else turn a piece. You've done a sterling job ... again. I look forward to your artistry every week 🤩
Thank you, Denise! 😊
You had me on the edge of my seat. So many times I felt like yelling at the screen: “Stop Phil, stop”. But as usual you turned a piece of firewood into art! I can see why you want to keep it for yourself. God bless.
Thanks, Michele! 😊
Phil, with your luck, you should go buy a lottery ticket. Mine usually turn into funnels! Good job, pretty piece.
Good idea! 😊
Now Phil, don't let it be known that you as human as the rest of us. I have a number of bowls/funnels waiting to be fixed one day...Maybe you could do a video of correcting a bottom blow out. Keep up the amazing work
If I get a blowout I'll do just that, Chris! 😊
I think Dave just send you stuff and thinks “ha I’ll get him with this piece!” But as usual you bring out natures beauty!
Close! 😁 I sent him this one because I had no hint what it wanted to be. He's never failed to impress. I just have impressive fails.
😊
You ended up with another great piece of art. You can't mess up a piece of art, Phil, you're an artist! Best,
😊
Thank you for the real time pieces. To see the tool jumping about helps a lot. As a newby I thought it was me not working correctly.
😊
An excellent example of both perseverance and skill, a wonderful looking piece Phil and a great video.
Take care
Mike
Thank you for stopping by, Mike! 😊
Phil, I was anxious along with you on this one. I'm glad you stopped when you did, with only the tiniest of pinholes. Love that there are still several woodpecker holes in the bark.
Thanks, Brock! 😊
Phil, you are to hard on yourself!! That bowl turned out beautifully, it is exactly how it should be, holes and all. well done sir!
Thanks, Fred! 😊
Phil my friend, I think just about every turner has said “we’ll, I should probably quit while I’m ahead”, just to turn the lathe back on to see if they can push the envelope a little. Lol.
Never ever make the final cut. 😊
That is one beautiful bowl. The colour contrast between the bark and wood is just perfect.
😊
You met the challenge and as usual the results were grand.
😊
Another nice save Phil. Glad you got to keep the holes from the woodpecker!
Me too, Laura, thanks! 😊
Lovely piece Phil. I can't believe you took that funny shaped bit of log and made such a beautiful bowl. But that's what you do. Inspiring. Thank you
Thank you, Barry! 😊 Cheers!
That was a nail-biter. I can never get over how some Sand-O-Flexing and finish changes the look of the bark from something kind of nondescript to a fascinating area of your pieces. I can see why you like it so much.
It's that contrast between the bark and the turned parts that I love and yes, the Sand O Flex definitely makes that possible! 😊
I actually really like that it's on a little Pedestal this is one of my favorites
😊
For a peace of FOG Phil it turned out another great looking. bowl. Thanks Phil
Thanks, Bob! 😊
Phil you’re modest your vision and skilful turning created another masterpiece. Even the pin hole 👀🪡🔍
😊
Well, when your were about halfway through turning I thought, "Well now, Phil is human." Then you finished the piece and I thought, "No, he is Super-human." Nice job once again.
Haha, thanks, Ken! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I thought you would reply, "Truth, Justice, and the American Way!"
Feel what I like is the combination of nature going on there it's all of the what's remaining of the woodpeckers art work. Being here in the Pacific Northwest we love our trees the birds that nest in them the birds that can alter their appearance and the humans who enjoy them in different art forms. Enjoy watching you create works of art Phil. Thank you for sharing!
I lover your appreciation of nature, Marguerite! 😊
Phil.
I think it has been a month since your last posting and if I am not mistaken you had mentioned that you are dealing with some health issues. Gotta tell you that I miss seeing your posts as you have been a real inspiration to me and my wood turning. I hope that you are healing and am looking forward to once again seeing you at your lathe. Best regards.
I appreciate that, Rob, thank you! I think I'm getting better! 😊
A very small pin hole but so what. It’s not like you’re going to eat cereal out of it! Very cool looking piece. 👍🏼👍🏼
Well, I was going to! LOL! 😊
Nice turning Phil. I think this dish needs to sit on an end or coffee table with some nice mints in this delicate looking dish.
Thanks for the show!
Joel
😊
Intrepid! 1/16th of an inch..."plenty of room". You Crack me up and impress me at the same time. Beautiful work as always. I've seen you turn a wooden sieve and now a bowl with a drain hole. Good job making the Bradford pear Beautiful. Thank you Phil
Haha, thanks a lot, Steve! 😊
Love watching you Phil, you are a fantastic time filler, when I get time I watch you, absolutely great, I'll have that when you're done. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
😊
Nice onePhil! Always cool to see you poke at a problem until you solve it. Cheers, Rick
😊
WOW. Why do you always have me on the edge of my seat 👏👏👏👏. Please stay safe, healthy, and blessed 💜💜
That's my job, Jo Ann! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop a work of art as usual. Thanks for brighten my life 💜💜💜
I like it. I just found out a friend of mine is turning bowls. Now I have someone to talk to about turning.
:)
Phil, I truly enjoy your turning nature's art. As an aside, my wife heard and approves, your "mask and faceshield on" PSA. Thanks
Cool, thanks, Ward! 😊
You have a great imagination for turning wood. Oh well a little boo boo. It happens. Great piece, thanks
😊
Small world! I worked at Fred Meyer in Hillsboro Oregon at the beginning of 2001. I worked primarily in the garden center but I covered the paint department as needed. I kind of regret not accepting the offer to go into the management program but oh well. That is a gorgeous piece!
Interesting, thanks, Michael! 😊
The woodpeckers and I approve Phil.
😊
I like it. Every time I see you tackle a interesting blank I am amazed at how positively you move forward. Inspiring. Thank you.
😊
My Sandoflexes and refills arrived yesterday. Now all I need is a denim shirt and my turnings will come out beautiful, Phil. Going shopping tomorrow.
LOL! Sounds great, Hubert, have fun!! 😊
I’m amazed how you can turn something that you would never believe would look good and it turns out awesome
Thank you, Don! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop your welcome phil
Came out better than I thought. Good job Phil.
😊
Boy you sure do know how to challenge yourself sometimes Phil. Great work.
😊
Thank you Phill I enjoy watching you work while having my morning cigar on my deck. Interesting piece you made there.
😊
Looks beautiful, Phil. It's so nice that you should make a stand to display it vertically.
Bill
Great idea, Bill! 😊
Phil, you are a true inspiration. I learned don’t give up keep on turning. Thanks.
Rock on! 😊
Beautiful Phil, yet again, you pulled a lovely rabbit out of an old hat! Another gorgeous bowl! I just love it with all its bark in tack with the wonderful speckled contrasts throughout its layers framing an exquisite pale cupped vessel within its frame. You certainly finished the woodpeckers job with a stunning result in this unique bowl, Phil! Thank you for inviting us along with you, have a great week and take care.💛🫂😊
Thank you, Sian! 😊
You are one of my woodworking heroes Phil, great stuff and thank you.
😊
This is a Cool bowl! Thank you for turning "art" bowls. It has helped me have the courage to try pieces, which others would discard.
Wonderful, Stephanie! Once you get a few of these odd, or "art" bowls under your belt, it's hard to go back to just plain round. These are so much more fun, interesting and rewarding! 😊
This turned out much better than I thought. Infact it's WONDERFUL!! A keeper!!
😊
Looks good 👍 you turn firewood into treasures
😊
Thanks, Phil, for finding beauty in firewood.
My brain was saying, "mark the tool rest", just before you attached the tape. Great minds running on the same track? Weak minds running in the same rut? Hopeful minds running with the same prayer?
It's a good Thursday again because Artist Phil shared his art!
Great minds no matter why, Crystal! 😊
I need to go and check the wood pile now. Don’t want to be burning potential. Another great job from near disaster, moving into impossible but you did it.
Potential in nearly every piece, Stephen! 😊
I love it. At the end when you held it up I thought of an owl cozying in or playing a game of what ya git there. It’s a beautiful piece. Well done.
😊
Well that turned out pretty good Phil. An excellent rescue.
😊
Had a heckuva time getting rid of the belly button. Gorgeous of course. I work with wire, I would have added a stand with four strands of 4 gauge coming up to a bronze wrapping and a finger hook dropping down and out to go through that woodpecker hole to hold it up. I love that you always get me to thinking about your guest-star wood and how you make gorgeous all the time and ‘what would I do’ if it happened to me. Thank You so much for that. such a gorgeous piece, I’m envious. Thanks for the video as well.
Wire art is very cool, me thinks! Thank you, D! 😊
Turned out really nice for a difficult turn. I love your artwork and creations. Great videos. 💕🤗💕
Thank you, Joalla! 😊
Thanks for leaving the woodpecker holes.
😊
Lovely bowl Phil and it certainly took all your expert knowledge to create it and it certainly is a thing of beauty, well done and thanks!
Cheers Al
Thank you very much, Al! 😊
It turned out beautiful Phil. I would use it as an anything bowl. Throw your change and keys in there and you will never see that tiny hole.
😊
A great nutbowl. Some pecans would look really good there. As always, great stuff.
😊
I like it . Its an optical illusion bowl . Looks thin but is actually pretty deep. Nice save
Thanks, Steve! 😊
I like it! The artistry and craftsmanship are super tight as usual. Great work, Phil!
Thank you, Sabrina! 😊
Love it Phil, it looks like a big foot bowl. Brilliant 👏
😊
Turned out great Phil, intricate bit of turning towards the end. Stay well, John
Thank you, John! 😊
Hey Phil, I would have guessed Crab Apple but definitely knew it was a fruit tree. If Dave says it's Bradford Pear then that is what it is I'm sure. You really did a beautiful job with it Phil. Yall have a wonderful day.
Thanks, Allyn! 😊
Best piece of FOG wood I have ever seen.
You are awesome.
😊
Thank You PHIL, Thank You Dave from Calmwood Creations...Mistakes?? BooBoo's?? Problems?? It all matters NOT with me Phil. I LOVE watching your turning adventure wither or not you feel you are happy with the finished turning or not. I enjoy sitting back watching each and every episode you offer!!! Love the drama with this turning in particular Phil. LOTS of strategy /compromise involved. It is not as much fun without the drama. FUN ONE PHIL & UNTIL NEXT TIME.....TM...P.S. ..Oh yea I believe that FOG wood is called "Woodpecker (plus tiny little hole in it's center, ha) wood"...
(peckerwood!) And it's Bradford pear. Forgot to indicate before mailing. Glad you like it!
Thanks a lot, Tuffy! I love that you take your creative time and spend a little of it with me! 😊
yes, i was cheerin you on Phil. you just couldnt hear me cause i was on the computer, and its not signed in for comments like this tablet is! i knew you were gonna do something amazing with that piece, and you did. pretty, pretty, pretty.
Thanks, Dave! 😊
Beautifully recovered ❤️
😊
Pin hole?! Blind man woul be glad to see it!! Lol We could call it drainage eh?! Beautiful as always! Glad to see you still muddling on , see ya next week with more beautiful wood! Take care of you n thanks for sharing x 😁😍
😊
Looks like an eagle in flight.
😊
Boy, was I concerned ou were going to go through the bottom. Excellent job!
Sometimes ya get lucky, Denise! 😊
You sure brought out the best of that FOG wood Phil . I was on pins and needles watching you go down that bowl . That was a great save using the tenon .
Ha, embarrassing to be stuck using the tenon but, it worked! 😊
Great recovery Phil. Thanks for sharing, stay safe, Jules, Droitwich, England
Thank you, Jules! 😊
You could always make a stand for it or turn it into a wall hanger. As an art piece it doesn't need to do anything except be displayed the way you like it. In my experience, the decision between "firewood" and "useful" wood depends mostly on the battle between the imagination of the artist and his need to keep warm :)
Haha, good point, Jim! 😊
Hi, Phil. I kept waiting for the whoopsie...but all you did was cut and adapt, cut and adapt. I know, there was that little thing with the wormwood screw, but you worked around it. I don't suppose we'll ever see you take an unfinished piece off the lathe, then walk across the room and toss it into the woodstove, then say: "How cool was that?" or "...for all to enjoy." Now, that would be a "whoopsie!" Haha!
Haha, I wish that could happen, Paul! I love the comedy in it! 😊
It is beautiful Phil. Held my breath a few times near the end tho. I knew you could do it proud.
Thanks, Sue! 😊
I love the bowl, Phil! I also very much enjoyed the journey you took to get there. I, too, like the vertical orientation, but I like the wider part at the top. You could always build a little stand for it, drill a hole for the tenon, and hide the tenon in the stand. No one would ever know but you (and the thousands of people who watched the video). Thanks!
Oh, I like the idea to hide the tenon, Greg! Heck, I guess I can just drill a hole in the wall and glue it in place! 😊
Just burst out laughing as you turned the lathe back on right after saying you should just quit there and call yourself lucky! 😂 Now back to the video to see how it comes out. ☺️ I don't know why, but your commentary this time really tickled my funny bone! Second favorite was the 1/16 of an inch left on the bottom being plenty of space! I never doubted your ability to take it from firewood to a beautiful bowl. I especially like the woodpecker holes! 💖👍☺️
Haha! I had to edit out a TON of material on this one, Robin. I was just being so weird I didn't even recognize myself. Must be the drugs. Glad some of it was funny! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I would rather have you weird on drugs than normal but not able to tolerate them. Keep on keeping on. 👍☺️
@@robinrummel1359 AMEN TO THAT! WEIRD IS GOOD!
I did the same thing!!
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop yeah we like weird. Another beautiful piece Phil, even though you were feeling odd your talent and skill shines on.👍👏
Well that nearly ended up back on the firewood pile, and would it have mattered, not at all, nothing ventured nothing gained. Turned out a nice piece. Take care Phil👍
😊
Nice job I love that you leave nature to be you pallet. Beautiful work as always. Thanks for sharing 👍.
