  • It's finally time to drive my RX28K on an RCP track. I picked this one up 6 months ago and never had a chance to visit a track during all this time. That's not ideal obviously. But today I'm going to visit Brooklyn Hobbies which is about an hour away. Can't wait!
Before getting there, I need to prepare the car first, starting with some 35000wt grease in the side dampers. I basically refresh the side damper grease before each track day. I'm also taking my reliable Reflex GLR-GT. I put 15000wt grease in PN side dampers with metal pistons.
Recently I learned that Richie and Brooklyn Hobbies have been around for 20 years!
As usual, I try to pack as compactly as possible but still pretty comprehensive with tools and supplies. The new track layout is quite a fast one. Last time I was here, there were more chicanes.
RX28 with the KISS frontend is finally on a track! Let's see how it does with its current configuration. Front tires are the usual PN KS medium low profile, around 22.4mm in diameter, on flanged Reflex Speed Dish rims. Rear tires are 11mm Marka 15 deg slick. I usually like the OG GL 1.2 sensorless ESC but it doesn't fit on the gen 1 RX28 chassis, so it's got the sensored GL-SD-ESC-010T. Powering the car is a 3500kv GL sensored motor with a 13T pinion. Servo is AGFRC A06CLS. The ceramic bearings installed on this chassis are also getting tested for the first time.
The first impression is pretty solid! It's not showing much traction roll tendency at all. This means at least the tire setup is decent, and that the body is not rubbing anything during the run. I remember for example the first time I tested a GLR here, it was pretty much undriveable. As mentioned before, I'm not a good driver but I've improved each time practicing at a track like this. After several laps, I'm able to develop more confidence and push the car more. I can still feel good stability and precision. Powering out of a corner seems to understeer a bit. It's probably mostly a skill level but I will need to investigate that later. Overall, the RX28 is behaving very well on the first run, much better than my first runs from GLR-GT or GLR.
After an hour or so, I noticed RX28 became a bit harder to drive. I thought I was just getting tired. I then discovered the frontend had become loose. I guess I didn't put enough loctite there. Silly me.
Under the yellow Jomurema body is my GLR-GT modded with a bunch of Reflex parts. I've had the GT for a while now and I was able to drive it quite a bit earlier this year at the LEMO Mini-Z track. Since it's already had a few iterations of testing and tuning, it's running better than the RX28. I have more confidence powering this car out of corners and down the straight. It steers consistently through the entire turn. I just want to say that GLR-GT with the RX505 mod is a great chassis. It's true that RX28 and RTA dominated the recent PNWC RWD classes, but for regular people like me this car is spot on.
On this layout, my best lap of the day was 5.3 seconds. I'm quite happy with that! I turned in many sub 6 seconds laps. The car is running with PN KS med front, 11mm Marka 5 degree slick rear, prepped by Roger. The power system is a GL 1.2 sensorless ESC and 2500KV GL motor with a 13T pinion. It's running with yellow front springs (medium) at the front. Those are quite soft and working well on this smaller track.
It was amazing to finally get some track time with cars that felt quite good and with my improving driving skills. With this Reflex GLR-GT, I felt I could reasonably hang with the other drivers on the track today. Of course, I was eager to test drive the RX28 finally. I was impressed by how driveable it was on the first go. The front lenses popped off after too many crashes though. They need to be CA glued for the next trip.
I also bought a couple of things at the store on the way out. These are the relatively new PN 19mm flanged rims, smaller than standard rims at 20mm. Supposedly they should help reduce traction rolling further.
This is Sammy and thanks for watching!

Thanks Roger! With my track visit frequency, this set of tires can last a while, but at some point I will need to learn how to prepare them like you do. I'm interested in hearing your findings from your recent tire testing!

just noticed Roger set your car up, I bought his old GTR that him and EJ Evans raced. I'ts super dialed. Can't imagine how much better the Reflex is.

The understeer is probably from your droop in your center damper. easy fix. I have a GL GTR that's dialed and I'm building a bad RX28 v2 for Mod. Can't wait to run it. I was in NJ about 2 weeks ago and wanted to stop by Brooklyn Hobbies to meet Richie but didn't have enough time. I did check out the Hobby shop in Aberdeen NJ and got quite a few laps in.

Thanks for the tip! I'm going to try that out in the next outing. I've never driven a GTR but I really like the older GL cars. What's your RX28 build going to have?
