- These are actual interviews, done for the Behind-the-scenes video for Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie (aka Race to the volcano). Thus making them official material.
Here you have Paul Schrier, Catherine Sutherland, and most importantly, Amy Jo Johnson, discussing Tommy being with Kat. Amy Jo, or if you will, Kimberly, says Kat stole her man. It's even implied that's why Kim kicked Kat's ass!
I personally think that too many people believe all of the rumors out there about this film, and treat them as SURE facts. I personally stopped believing the Jason/Kim rumors because of this clip and some comments from insiders and such, all pretty much saying the "facts" aren't all true, and alot are straight up fan conjecture.
Fact remains that they weren't and will most likely never be an item. I've seen tons of so-called "evidence", but fact remains that they never had plans for these two Pre-Tommy or post Tommy/Kat. In fact, that theory has been entirely shot down by the story editor and co-author of Forever Red. He flat out said since Turbo, Jason's been flying solo, doing his own thing on his Harley.
As far as Tommy and Kim, and Kat, the letter, ASTR, etc. No I don't think much of ASTR, or Tommy/Kat, for many reasons. I also think there are timeline flaws within Zeo which make it worse. I do however acknowledge that attempts to re-establish Tommy and Kat in more recent times have been made, but at the same time so have those with Tommy and Kim. Hell, Tommy/Kim were acknowledged in FR and Dinothunder.
I have the viewpoint that with any ongoing series, anything can be contradicted, even slightly, at the flip of a hat because different writers, producers, etc want different things.
I've said before that the show's former executive producer, Jonathan Tzachor, was said by insiders (confirmed ones who've provided some of the only real facts about the show) to have attempted to have Amy come back for Forever Red. So no I don't think some things are set in stone with this show, and really this show, you're lucky if continuity stays consistent within 2 episodes! Megaforce and Samurai both retconned aspects of the series.

Yeah. It's not meant to be taken seriously. Amy wasn't around when that went down, this is moreso her own reaction to finding out her replacement got paired up with Tommy. Though it is oddly hilarious they would even create this segment for the BTS documentary, and even go so far as to suggest Evil Kim attacked her over it, when in the film it seemed more about Evil Kim getting a kick out of attacking her, partly because she was ex-pink...hence the whole "Pink is out" line - as in it's out of style, and evil is in.

I think that the only way that the writers could get people to like Kat without doing too much was to have Kimberly break up with Tommy and in a horrible way. It seems like Tommy/Kat fans can only use the letter to support them, they have nothing else. Sorry that the writers didn't focus on the Tommy/Kat relationship as much as they did the Kimberly/Tommy relationship.
+BleuJay9 Very True. They had to throw Kimberly under the bus to prop the Tommy and Katherine pairing. That is just sad and lame. Tommy and Katherine didn't need to be a pairing. They really didn't have very strong chemistry and their personalities didn't really match. She would have been great with someone like Billy or Jason. People would have liked Katherine better if they hadn't had done this. It actually seemed to make people dislike her more. They should have just let her develop as a character without being Tommy's girlfriend. They dropped the ball on her character development.

Right. Because power rangers isn't notorious for not giving a crap about canon or continuity. Dinocharge brought back Dinosaurs followed by a season without a dinosaur in site with rangers who have no clue what power rangers are even though there have been rangers around for 25 years and there have been two full planet attacks. Zordon said the Wild West Rangers were the first rangers on Earth even though the samurai rangers have been around for centuries. That future shown in Zeo was compatible at that moment but the show has moved far beyond that. Tommy returned numerous times, once for an entire season, no Katherine. Is it still possible? Yes but far from set in stone anymore. Proud Tomberly shipper. 😊

Also according to executive producers, that future scenario with Tommy & Kat being married and having grandkids is still canon. ergo, Tommy & Kat are still married in the future! =p just because Kat hasn't returned in person doesn't mean she and Tommy are no longer together. And even IF that were the case, at least Tommy & Kimberley's relationship ended a long time ago. So even if you Tommy/Kim shippers just can't accept Tommy's relationship with Kat, you guys should at least accept the fact that the Tommy/Kim relationship is over and has been for a long time.
Linda L Catherine has said she was contacted about possibly returning for Forever Red, but talks didn't get far and she ended up doing a voice for one of the Villains Tezzla. Which executive producer? You know how they have changed numerous times over the years. At one time, one may have said that but recently? I haven't heard a thing. This isn't just about bring Tomberly fan, it's acknowledging that the series may have moved beyond a holiday special "future". They show through us Skull`s teenage son, which would have been born when? Zeo? Old Rita in Mystic Force even though she was shown turning into a young woman only 8 years earlier? Thrax anyone? RPM is a different dimension? Ninja Steel has no knowledge of power rangers. So which exact dimension or series does this future fall? Why is held so concrete by people? Other than to troll Tomberly fans? Plus what is with fans saying Tommy and Katherine could have been together in Dinothunder, she just wasn't shown. That makes such little sense. Where exactly is she?

kat/tommy was so barely focused on there was times i forgot they were dating. i mean they might as well have just been friends. i do think the letter was a very weak attempt to split kim and tommy up. personally i would have had them breaking up when kim left. she wanted to focus on her training and she didn't want to tie tommy down to her when her training could have taken years. tommy i could see accepting that and they stay friends. and then by the time zeo/turbo rolls around tommy/kat would have made more sense and could have been devleoped more. the end of tommy/kim and the tommy/kat romance in general wasn't written as good as it could have. i'm personally a tom/kim fan but even i can tell the 3 characters deserved better. and if amy wasn't watching the show how would she know her character even wrote a letter. she may have just shown up to the set and been like tommy' and kat are dating. that might have blindsided her a bit. xD

Seems like some producers, and definitely some of the cast disliked how it all happened. Catherine has actually been the most vocal about it, though I am curious to see what may happen next year. I mean the writer responsible for this mess was really desperate it feels like. Having Amy's name credited in the ep as a guest star, right before trashing her character, so they can try and make fans want to see Tommy with her replacement as the only viable option (nevermind what Kim must've been going through alone), and for Kat to finally get the guy she wanted from jump. It was a hot mess. Even had Tommy say, Kim never mentioned anything about anyone else until then...smdh!! I still smh @ Kat having the same Initials as Kim. Hardly any real effort put into that replacement relationship as it was. The actors didn't have the same level of chemistry either (one can even just see the panels with the actors today and see worlds of a difference). Kat definitely could've been given better focus in general. The whole thing did them all wrong for sure.
Didn't seem like Amy knew at all, let alone was told what they did. Heck, i would've asked for a check, since they claimed she was guest starring in the ep with the letter. LOL! It's odd to me they would even do this segment, knowing what they allowed to happen. They may have assumed Amy wouldn't be back (there's evidence that Kim was supposed to have pre-filmed scenes from Florida to be used in MMPR actually), thought fans wouldn't care either way, yet another one of the execs saw it fit to bring Amy back. Can't blame him as Zeo bombed big time...it's actually the season that nearly got PR cancelled, not Turbo.
That said, just look at history. Even after the letter. They tried to play on Tommy/Kim some in the Turbo film, tv specials, and special eps would reference Tommy/Kim, but not Tommy/Kat. Even before this reboot film hit, you could still see them selling Tommy/Kim as this iconic thing. From different/current comic series, dvd ads, merchandise being sold with them paired up, social media references etc. JDF finally got to do appearances with Amy again (he expressed wanting to do some with just them years ago), and he's already booking them into next year.
MMPR Pink comics (which follow their own continuity - even from the rest of the current MMPR comics) even tried to do Kim some justice, by letting people see how Kim's POV might've been, even in terms of being an ex-ranger, Tommy's role on the team, direction in life etc. It was pretty nice to see a series dedicated to trying to do Kim some justice over that horrible letter. I could go on... lol
i know kat was supposed to return in forever red (she was cut but still voiced one of the generals) and then later in dino thunder (but again her part was cut). it's a shame. tommy/kat was never really given a chance. in the end, ii felt like it fizzled out before it really started. the backlash of the letter and abrupt end of tommy/kim probably killed chances of a real tommy/kat romance just because it was done so badly. plus kat was a fairly new character. she'd only been in on the show for like 10 or so episodes in mmpr, then the 10 or so episodes for the alien ranger saga, and then about halfway through zeo they get the letter. so she'd had maybe around 30-35 episodes and 10 of them was played by another actor being her child self. so really only around 20-25 episodes. compared to kim who'd been on for nearly 3 seasons and had time to develop her character.
probably why the romance was dropped. i haven't seen zeo or turbo recently but i don't remember them mentioning dates or anything like that. for chunks of turbo and zeo tommy was either brainwashed, or off learning how to be a race car driver. or involved in the monster of the week plots. there was no real time to develop a new relationship. they could have put her with rocky or jason and would have felt more natural as well.
Yeah. I feel like if they handled it better, fans would've been more receptive. KAT deserved to have a fighting chance, instead of immediately being swept up into some triangle mess, that ultimately was a disservice to all of them.
I agree though. I saw the scripts years ago. A Season to Remember was written in the middle of Zeo, but intended to air last, so it was definitely a "vision" for the season's end. Looking back, it makes me think if they figured, "They are gonna end up married, so we don't really have to try." Why not show Tommy try to help Kat through something personal, rather than only giving her eps where she's focused on HIM or another random skill she was good at, before giving her something Catherine could actually do (ballet/dance). I literally just Smh @ Zeo. Kat finally got a tiny bit of decent focus in Turbo, and the insecurities she had in those eps, would've made more sense if they were when she was still new. Instead of Tommy being in trouble or under another spell, why not let her be turned Evil again?
Like they could've done so much, but wasted it. Kat literally get's a chance of a lifetime, this time, not even random like it was with Kim. She gets into the dance academy of her dreams, and Tommy while happy she got in, doesn't react to the fact this means she'd be leaving the country for who knows how long. After what happened with Kim, that should've been a red flag. Why not let him have even attend ONE audition, rather than just sitting at the juice bar doing nothing, or doing nothing that would go anywhere on the race track? I know there was production conflict (and JDF wanted out...even before Turbo), but it's like they didn't even try.
Tommy had too much focus in Zeo. Right after the letter mess, was the arc about his brother. He had the brainwashed arc as well, and other bits scattered throughout. I mean all that copy and paste of the Green Candle arc when Tommy suddenly becomes more interested in Kat, and when they go on a date, both of them just look awkward...forced honestly. Instead of having fun, they just sit and watch everyone else. It's even more laughable when you see Jason developing with Emily more believably. We have to be told they spent time together offscreen, rather than showing them bond. I mean even that King for a day arc...Kat put herself out there for Tommy, and at the end, you still see nothing meaningful for a buildup of the two. It was all on Kat. Turbo, "I wonder how Tommy's doing at the race track"...never see Tommy ask about her. He barely seemed to care when she was starving herself. A hot mess.

Zeo was too congested I felt. Two sets of villians throughout. Billy basically being a human Alpha, only to have the others coming in and doing things in the command chamber as well. Jason taking on the gold mantle. Bulk and Skull taking up focus (BOTH of them had one ep semi-romances) different relationships spread out all over, etc...season honestly could've used more focus. Felt like they were coasting until the next film. I know I was let down by the Machine Empire, given how they tried to hype them up.
i've seen the transistion done better in fanfics. When Fans write the story better than the actual writers you know yo'uve screwed up. either someone else wrote the letter that broke up them up. which results in kim & tommy getting back together. or kat/tommy are dating, married, etc. whether you're a fan of kim/tommy or kat/tommy it was just written badly. and in dino thunder almost felt like a repeat of the triangle. i mean you could see hints of tommy/hayley that never went anywhere and then elsa had a crush on tommy. personally i think if they were going to break kim & tommy up they also could have just had him be single.. the guy doesn't have to be dating someone to have a story. kat could have been paired up with billy, rocky, jason, skull, bulk, or random extras. they was really no reason for a kat/tommy storywise. could have shown kat move on from her crush . honestly tommy/heather felt more natural to me.. in 3 episodes and tommy kept canceling on her cause of ranger business. felt like zack/angela from the mmpr days.

One might've even felt like Kira/Trent was kind of playing on the Kim/Tommy too. There were some parallels with the characters.
I 100% Agree about Tommy not needing to be dating someone to have a story, and that's actually something JDF said. He said them immediately putting him in another relationship, made him feel like Tommy was a ho. LOL! He tries not to upset both sets of fans, but he's been vocal about his dislike of Tommy/Kat, and how it came to be. He'd already expressed when Amy left (and Karan even), he wasn't enjoying his time on the show as much. Said it was becoming too coporate, and he wasn't getting as much respect. LOL ironically he wanted to quit after the MMPR film like Amy. :P
Wow, it's actually nice to see someone who actually felt Heather was a more natural match than Kat. I actually agree. I liked that Heather said he could talk about Kim if he wanted to (it wasn't her business yet his peeps told her a bit about Kim and Tommy...which despite treating it like trash with this mess... the writing said was special), and she wasn't trying to force something. She also had a love for the outdoors, and would spend time in isolation to reflect and clear her head, which is exactly what he opened up to Kim about in s1 (and it was relevant when Kim was afraid of losing her powers too). And see, eventhough Kat meant well, her meddling in Tommy's personal life ultimately soured any chance Tommy had with Heather, but opened her up to be his "only" option...which is basically what the show was doing. Tommy said he hated leaving things with Heather the way he did, but it wasn't anyone's place to meddle with that, especially after Tommy said he couldn't stay with her because of his obligations as a ranger/in AG (MMPR Pink comics actually explore this). Even Tommy telling her he just needed "Time," after she said she thought he needed someone in his life. Like I can't. Even KIM allowed Tommy to have space to think and reflect on his own. I felt Heather got that. They seemed to have more in common.
People trying to force him into a romantic situation right after the breakup was dumb. I even dislike that BILLY, who's known Kim most of his life, is up there saying he hopes Tommy and Heather will be happy together, and is trying to help push them together along with Kat (eventhough she showed she was disappointed by it LOL). Like wth? I still cringe @ how miserable Tommy looks when he dances with Kat, while she's grinning all on his shoulder. Being told it was a happy ending by Ernie - as Kat just needed to wait for him to come around, and they were already falling in "love" according to the script. LMAO!!!!!...Didn't help that about the only thing Tommy would do to suggest he liked Kat afterward was say she looked good. Like none of the bigger things ever came up from Tommy.

I believe Kat and Tommy will be together in the upcoming anniversary special. I hope so, I really miss Kat as a ranger. People seem to forget that Amy Jo Johnson doesn't really wanna do Power Rangers anymore. She made her cameo in the movie but she won't dress up as the pink ranger anymore. She's trying to be a serious actress/director or whatever. I fully accept Kat as MMPR/Zeo/Turbo pink now.
We shall certainly see, especially given some views of those involved with the show, and how Saban Brands and affiliates still promote Tommy and Kimberly, and they even encouraged Lionsgate to put Amy and JDF in the film. Wouldn't be surprised either way.

Amy Jo Johnson is a union actor, who does union work as an actress (occasionally now), and when creating and directing her own projects now. Amy has said repeatedly, for several years now, she would do the show again in a heartbeat, but it has to be union. It's the same reason many others will never be on the show again, unless it's union, especially not those with actual/active careers in the entertainment business.
She's "trying" to be a serious actor/director? LMAO!!!!! Um she's one of the few American PR actors who actually has had a consistent/stable acting career, and even one of the fewer who had actual starring roles on series and films beyond PR. She's won awards for her work, both as an actress, and as a filmmaker. Unlike some others, her personal projects are properly managed, get completed, have had no issues falling within Union regulations (thus no actors/production crew having to abandon the project altogether), and are out in the time-frame she gives. She's not doing any of it for fame or wealth, but for a love of the craft...which is a reason why she's had longevity.
The woman was nearly electrocuted when she returned for Turbo, because Saban was too cheap to use lights made to be used underwater. She was also hung over a fire pit, having previously had her hair caught on fire early into season 1. So excuse her for not being desperate to run back for a bit role, on a show that doesn't have production values in place that truly work to benefit those making the show happen. Some actors have refused offers to return because of low pay (main issue they bring up), and non-union status - Catherine is one of them. Some folks simply aren't willing to risk losing the protection of the union.
Amy's already dressed up again as the Pink Ranger as well- it not being on the show is irrelevant. She even said after her cameo was revealed, in an open letter to Saban, she would love to do more than that cameo. The Reboot series was mentioned in her letter, because it is actually union, but again she has said numerous times she would be open to appear on the show. She's even said she'd like to also work behind the camera as well.

And which one would that be? From what I recall hearing over the last few years her saying that she didn't think she should wear spandex at her age, but then commented on the fact she did do it anyway a few years ago, despite how she and others felt even then. Heck even Catherine has said she didn't feel comfortable wearing spandex, but then brought up how Amy and Nakia have done it.
You seem to also be forgetting that people returning aren't necessarily always going to be wearing the costume to even play the ranger role. This has been the case since crossover ranger teams began appearing. Like you didn't see JYB in the ranger suit in In Space, but Adam still was the black ranger. In Wild Force, none of those teamups show the returning characters in the suits, they simply morphed/demorphed. Others have returned as their previous roles, and not morphed even. So, for all we know at this point, some of these people may not even morph up, or even if they did, it could just be an instant thing, not helmetless.
As I said, she has said she wouldn't mind doing a special appearance, but has also expressed an interest in directing for the show as well. One other actor has both returned and written for the show, in the same season, so it's even possible she could end up doing more than one thing as well- should the show become union of course. Amy even once began to say she almost started to get the chance to direct some eps of PR, but said something happened, and moved on from that comment. Other than that she's expressed an interest in playing a villian role in the reboot film series.

A lot of my friends who are polyamorous have talked about how the love triangle in Star Trek with Deanna Troi and Worf vs. Will Ryker could easily be solved with polyamory, and it has been pointed out that those characters would probably be up for it. I think that could apply here. I can imagine Kat and Kimberly being open to both of them being in a relationship with Tommy.
I will admit that I am still fond of a Kimberly and Skull relationship and a Kat and Justin relationship, when Justin is old enough. Admittedly, Kat is more of a motherly figure for Justin than a romantic figure, but wait six years.

This video was posted for other reasons, but I'll comment on this stuff. Did you even watch the show? Kat replacing Kim as the love interest, was already being set up before Amy left the screen. The girl was obsessed with him and tried to "get rid of Kim" out of jealousy while under a spell. Never admitted to it either, and then happily took Kim's place on the team (probably why Kat's origins are always ignored in recaps, even her being put under a spell was because she was "smitten" over some "boy" she just met, which was actually a Tenga in disguise smdh). She kept hanging around Tommy afterward as well, and even before Kim's letter they emphasized her interest in him in Zeo too. They were trying to condition viewers into seeing Kat as his love interest. It would be what ultimately defined her character, which is sad, because she could've been so much more than what she was in the end.
Like Amy's said, they had Kim do something "not nice" to try and sway the audience to like Kat more and accept the new relationship someone wanted to push--while also Claiming..."no one" wanted to see Tanya and Adam together...yet Jason also had a love interest...which doesn't make that Exec look good in the end, especially when one considers Tommy and Kat is not liked by most, ratings were tanking, and even the actors had issues with it. In the end, one of the producers asked Amy to return for the Turbo film, and he played up their relationship in his script a bit (even more in stuff not in the final cut), which is why Tommy shows alot of specific concern over Kimberly. Years, later, even after Kat started dating Tommy (yet ended up going separate ways), other producers/writers considered her appearing in Forever Red picking up Tommy, and had they not been cheap, wrote better scripts, had proper budgeting, and planned things ahead of time, we may have had Amy return years ago, but even if she did, it would've been them having to decide if Tommy and Kim got back together, despite the damage already being done in Zeo. They would've had to retcon the whole notion of Kat marrying Tommy. The only reason Kim broke up with Tommy was to push that pairing. Period.
I will say this too, these characters are all "retired" more or less (only popping up as rangers when needed), and they don't have to appear on screen to be attached in some ways. Tommy and Kim, as a matter of fact, began their relationship when Tommy was written off in s1. He was not supposed to return outside of his brief cameo in Doomsday part 2, which was originally the series ending, but he and Kim were still an item.
How about no on blaming the actor? She isn't the one who wrote the OOC letter in Zeo. They didn't have to break up anything, or write her out the way they did, AFTER the actor gave them a proper exit (the only one who did at that). They could've broken them up before she left, but they chose not to. They could've put more of an actual effort with Tommy and Kat, that also didn't try and trash Kim and her relationship with Tommy, but they did! We CAN blame terrible writing choices, we CAN blame them not respecting the talent and their worth as to the brand, and as union talent, them not planning for things etc for why certain people have not returned, and won't until things change (You can have a "Wes" come back, but you will never see a character like "Jen" unless things change, as like Amy, Erin has an active career, and knows her worth.
Hell the only reason we got Once and Always to happen, in the end, was they HAD to have originals. That is what people were tuning in for. David was necessary as he has no replacement or "suit filler" if you will. David forced them to make it union, he also had some creative input. That is the only reason we got him (and Walter). They tried to screw JDF over, and ultimately he opted not to return (finally realizing he was just a number to them and he wasn't getting gonna get his solo series), part of that including Amy not accepting the offer given either. David even said they didn't have a script when they arrived in NZ, from what I recall. I can respect Amy and JDF for not doing something like that. What Amy chose to do is better anyway.
