Kurt Vonnegut was a great writer and human being. The world could use a lot more of people like him. The decency in his heart which he squeezes out between bouts of wry humor and biting intellect make him a hero to me. I contribute much of my conscience to this man.
Kurt Vonnegut, what a mind , thinker and writer. Yes, a hero of mine. THANK YOU. ♥️
What does he mean when he mentions “Viamar” at 1:32?
@@seanfrance3182 He's referencing Weimar, as in the Weimar Republic which was the government formation that eventually became Nazi Germany.
I saw Salman Rushdie speak at a university in 2006 or so. He used the phrase "When the excrement hits the ventilation duct" and it got big laughs. Shoulda known Kurt said it first because Kurt said everything first. Love that man.
Rushdie strikes me a bit of a hack. Sometihng about him I don't really care for.
The shit has hit the AC Kurt
Kurt Vonnegut: a free thinking, free acting and free creating man.
Too Scary !!!
So very very relevant in 2020

"Only longterm thinking will save the world". If it can be saved, we should have started in 1987.
Standard of living has gotten exponentially better for vast majority of humans since ‘87. What are talking about?
MN purp standard of living, perhaps. But depression and anxiety is on the rise, our country engages in useless wars, our environment and economy is going to shit, and big corporations are corrupting our political system and our news system.
@@Clandsom And they've become weaker, sicker, and more depressed - those are facts. Many will also claim they've actually become poorer, refering to economics or not [time stamp refering to one year ago, i.e. 2019, when it was like there was actually more wealth around than what the world has to offer to spend it on].

What does he mean when he says “Via Marte” “Via Maris” no closed caption. 1:32 he talks about a prelude…
He said "Weimar" as in the Weimar Republic, which was the name for Germany in the period between WWI and when Hitler assumed control in 33.
SDI = the Regan "Star Wars Program". 1983-1993. Interesting note, It was such a bad program in terms of waste that the whistle blower was actually protected by then Sec. of Defense Dick Cheney.
I studied engineering at a large state university. Such an oath would have been a good idea, and most of my classmates would have rejected it.🙄
He was haunted by the apocalypse because he had already lived through it
The sound is garbled
Welcome to the garbled 80s
This video is old technology.
What's with the underwater audio?
Have you checked the the date stamp on this video. Videotaped almost 35 years ago on analog equipment.
It was recorded in 1987
High quality audio was available and commonplace way before the 80s. There is some other explanation for the awful quality of this, the date this was created has nothing to do with it.

Kurt was able to see through the SDI ruse, but the Soviets were taken in by it.
What Kurt misses was that the ruse of SDI caused the Soviets to spend capital that they didn't have to counter a fake weapons program.
SDI is still impossible, but deception around military capabilities is not.
What does he mean when he mentions “Viamar” at 1:32?
@@seanfrance3182 he's talking about the Weimar Republic, which was the system of government in Germany that was replaced by national socialism.
Can’t hear it.
Reupload with > volume.
We're almost there, Kurt. Are you watching?
People do bend and compromise in the end. And seems they do it these days from the very beginning
I had to view this again because the earth never stands still, though it's people would desire too. Especially the wealthy.
A sense of values in education theme.
SDI was a political tactic to bring the Russians to heel. And it worked. What finally forced Gorbachev to capitulate was What Reagan said to him in their final nuclear arms talks meeting for which Gorbachev confirmed, Reagan said that he would build SDI no matter the cost and when completed would share technology with every country on earth, friend or foe, making these weapons completely obsolete.
The nuclear arms race and oil price manipulation (US/Saudi collusion), Afghanistan, plus a failed bureaucratic command economy.
SDI?

Is the hypocratic oath perhaps a dangerous play on words? If one says one will not willingly do an act of harm is not one also saying one will surely make errors beyond their control? It is both unavoidable and paramount to practice.
Is modern medicine doing well?
@@DSPHistoricalSociety I'm a Vonnegut fan and I'm not a furry although I am an artist. I think Vonnegut drew some cats and cattle as well. I'm not a sicko either. Where are your manners?
@@LogoDojo jfc my mistake- i don't know where any of that came from! My apologies. I'll delete now. Also your art is pretty.

@@LogoDojo no. You were completely in the right. Honestly not sure where that comment came from.
@@DSPHistoricalSociety to be fair I used to read Furlough and it ruined my brain
Most of this comment section can take a flying fuck at a doughnut, a flying fuck at the moon, one of the first things he said was short term thinking and all of you focused on the beginning of the video because you feel implicated by linking economic collapse to political turbulence and scapegoating. This was 1987 and based on the values held by the majority of careerist politicians, including the one you are playing devils advocate and vicarious victim for.
If you can read Vonnegut and support the current cruel circus you must have missed something along the way. Vonnegut was an avowed believer in social democracy.
He also said this;
"A purpose of human life, no matter who is controlling it, is to love whoever is around to be loved. Here is a lesson in creative writing. First rule: Do not use semicolons."
Watch the video again, what you people fixated on was one part of a much larger scoped speech.
How noble of you to expect the majority to act on principle instead of emotion during Clown-Yuga.

So you are that guy!

Very insightful man. Are we entering a Weimar Republic stage?
I think we've been in the Weimar Republic since, maybe, 2008?

Perhaps but the stab in the back came with the Mueller Inquisition, Pelosi’s impeachment and fake news derailing Trump’s re-election.
The country is divided and angry. An American Hitler may well be in our future. Most likely from the military.
No, the main drivers aren’t there but when looked back upon it will be something unique to this age, painted using historical brushes but with modern paints. The closest I can come is they we have entered a “Corporate Republic” phase.
We need to throughly dissect and evaluate the first 2 decades of the 21st century, the influence 9-11 had on the world, and specifically the US, was as profound as any other major historical event. Was it more profound than, say, WW1? I’m not sure, but it should be considered. If one is to ask the Weimar question then WW1 must be compared to as it was the major driver.
So, have we entered a phase similar? I don’t believe so, I believe it is something uniquely different, yet the same in some ways, as other periods in history. The real question is “how will it end”.

Excellent observations.
So much has changed since February.
NATO, Europe and the US have responded as one against Russian aggression. Germany had chosen to seriously muscle up. Russia is militarily and economically crippled for a generation. Need for CANZUK is agreed by most as a must. China feels unanchored to Western Markets.
Provided Putin doesn’t use tactical nukes, this will be viewed as confirmation of the Second American century. Let’s hope we lead with humbleness and humility in order to keep NATO United.
YES...and with Weimar republic problems, we will end up with Weimar republic solutions.
I was a classical liberal for over 60 years but even I would vote for a ruthless leader who would bend over the 'woke' and perverted left and ream them into oblivion.
This supporting of silencing opposition, provoking nuclear war on Russia's Western border, the decadence and corruption of our political leaders...all disgusting to me.

What was looming in 1987 that got Kurt all worked up? Acted like the world was coming to an end.
Well, we had Reagan cutting taxes for the rich, big deficits, more corporate power.
Iran Contra. Cold War rhetoric. Growing military spending. Big push to address crime through incarceration. Cutting social services.

R😅TFL! What a steaming load. 35 years later today we are not remotely a Weimar Republic.
1:45 he predicts Trump
sorry you thought crypto. Next time believe in the U.S. Constitution. Pokiemon trading cards are not money.
The Trump MAGA fascist movement is the fulfillment of Kurt’s prophecy.
If you want to see a fascist, look in the mirror.
MAGA does not support silencing opposition, or the provoking of nuclear war with Russia, or the sexual perversions being being forced on our children.
Trump is too weak for your crowd...I'd prefer a stronger leader who would pay back to your 'woke' left pansies the same wolfman tickets that you and yours are handing out.
Weimar republic problems lead to Weimar republic solutions.
As you worship your cult leaders warning you about melting ice-caps and utter doom because of your CO2. Yeah, your vision of reality really holds water.
You have zero concept of fascism.
