What do you think of this method?! Do you think I should tweak anything?
Don't forget to check out Sophie's channel here: ua-cam.com/video/Czudf2Eq-9k/v-deo.html
Thank you for the demo. I think this routine seems a bit stressful 😅 I have super fine hair that's why I love all your videos. I feel with fine hair less is more. And this routine for me is a bit more of a struggle.
Is good to try but my hair is very baby fine hair. I notice your hair and Sophie has different texture. She has more density and works for her very well
I'm a curly hair girl and I respect us curly people but this routine was hurting my stomach while watching. Sooooo much work. 😭 But thank you for making it. Your patience is unmatched.
I do this but on soaking wet hair in the shower.
With washing and styling it takes me 30 minuts
I thought the same. So much work AND SO MUCH TOUCHING!
I’ve been doing this method pretty regularly. I like that it gives me volume and doesn’t stretch out my top layer like regular brush styling seems to do. After trying it I decided I preferred adding the gel after sectioning and styling instead of doing it to each section. I also did the first two sections upside down and then flipped upright and did the back section right side up. I love seeing people’s routines and taking pieces from them to improve my own.
Me too! I'm definitely taking bits from this routine and incorporating them in my regular routine.
If you’re standing up to do the back section how do you do it without having the other two sections get in the way?
@@alli_loves_skincare7842 clip the top and middle sections and start at the bottom. It doesnt mix too often with the already done sections below.
@@imajenn3006 tysm
I like how Marisa does it where that bottom/back layer is brushed down upright instead. It works so much better for me
Yeah! I want to try that next time.
I tried this upright with my very long low-density hair after seeing someone else do it upright, too (on Instagram maybe?). Doing it upright involves starting with the back and working my way forward. It has been a game-changer for me. Thanks for your thoughts on the method! It helps to hear other people's tweaks.
I love seeing how different techniques get different results!
Thank you so much Gena for your lovely honest review! 😍 I actually love how your hair turned out, trial & error is the best way to see what works and what doesn’t - and love how you adapted it for you. I came up with method mainly to help existing filp stylers who already prefer styling upside down. Also I realised I didn’t mention in my video but my hair strands are thick and my density is medium, the reason patches are sometimes seen on my scalp is to do with previous alopecia episodes - my curl type is a mixture of 3A & 3B. Xx
Thank you! I loved testing it out and sharing some tweaks! I think it’s a really great quick way to brush style for those that prefer upside down styling.
Thanks for sharing your curl type too!
Gena, thx for the detailed video- it gave me a good idea how it would work ( or not) on my hair. Have an awesome week!
I tried this method with upright styling. I start with the bottom layer and work my way up. I actually like the sectioning - it helps me to be organized during brush styling
Me too! thats how i usually section upright too
The first time I tried this my side looser curls were a problem. What did work is how to get the back hair in place after being upside down or even wet plopping so that the curls are not webbed. This was excellent commentary. This method does give you great volume.
I have been doing a modified version. I do like to style upside down but I don’t do the three sections. The part that I’ve adopted is where I weave my fingers in the back before I go upright. That used to be my trouble spot with upside styling. This works so much better. I do have medium hair but I do have a deep cowlick and that helps immensely. Am loving it
Awww. You’re hair just always looks good no matter the technique. I like it and I like you usual way. They are just different. ❤️
I really like your feedback on this routine, thank you. Manes by Mel does the straight up brush styling using a Denman brush, I think she might use it other routines as well, but not 100% sure.
I tried this today. I did the bottom layer styled down and the other two upside down. I really need my hair very wet to style too. It worked so good! I will continue to use this method for sure! Thanks for showing this!
Oh and at the end I flipped it all upside down and glazed more gel. Then flipped it all to one side and glazed more gel and did the same for the other side. Micro plopped. Then hover diffuse.
Thanks for trying out this method! I've been seeing it everywhere lately! I never have much luck with brush styling unfortunately. My curl pattern is a little looser than yours and I struggle to retain curl definition when using a brush.
Fascinating point about shedding more if upside down styling. I’m going to try styling upright (my neck and back will appreciate that), and see if I shed less as I shed a tonne! Thanks. X
I just started using this method and it is a game changer! Takes no time, curls and volume for days. This routine + new Shark hair dryer= PERFECTION!!
Yay! 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Oh yes, you nailed it when you said you get a lot of root frizz when you try to cover the section lines, this is the bane of my life 😫 Low density hair can be such a pain. The curl smith oil doesn’t seem to work for me, I always feel like I get even more frizzy, faster, when I use it. 😕
So I do this method but instead I do it right side up with 4 sections. I adjusted it this way for my 2c/3a curls and it works wonders. My problem area was the curls at my nape just not clumping but this has helped tremendously. Skip the comb. No need it will loosen the clumps. Hope this helps.
I enjoyed this video ~ thank you. After seeing your hair type, I believe this technique works better w/ curly hair than wavy hair. I tried it, and I have more of a wavy pattern, and didn’t have as much success ~ 💕
I was wondering about this method for me too! I have high porosity, low density, fine waves/curls. I am still trying to figure out methods that work the best for me from a time and results perspective. I'm in a weird place where I get defined curls and no volume or I get volume and only waves.
I have shorter low density hair and I style to the side. I’ll try it since you recommended it for low density hair.
Great honest video Gina! This method was a disaster for my wavy long hair. The brush broke my clumps and product application was really hard! I can see it working for some people but it didn't work for me 😞😞😊😊!
Ah, I could see that possibly happening with waves or looser curls. You could try it without the comb step, and leave the curls clumped. 😊
I have to try this method. I love the volume
Me too!
I've never been successful with any type of upside-down styling, so I probably won't even try it. It looks like more work than it's worth! My hair is much lower density than yours, so all the sections would be quite obvious.
That makes total sense! Yeah it seems like more of a medium density type of technique
No no no 😀
It's the first method I tried where my scalp didn't showed and the first upside-down where my hair didn't stuck together
I need about 30 minuts with washing and styling
But I only do 2 sections because I don't have enough hair for 3 😂
Before I grab a towel, I use a wet brush on my hair, flipped over, but don't really bother with sections. I just finger through and scrunch, then towel and use a Denman brush, upright. Sometimes, I might section my hair and wind every piece with a long thin silver spoon. Those sections dry in perfect ringlets. Either way, it turns out curly.
I saved that video in Instagram too . I am trying it next wash day !
It's so fun!
@@GenaMarie , I am going to try this and then plop in the hairpear towel. I bought that on your recommendation and I LOVE it. It's so easy and I get great results !
I think I've seen Manes by Mell use a method similar to the one you describe @14:40. She sometimes separates the top section of her hair from the bottom section & then uses a brush to style each (horizontal) layer, starting from the back to the front.
Yeah! That's pretty much how I style too when I section. I pick up vertical sections instead which clump my curls better than horizontal.
That's the UA-camr I was thinking of too. I'd love to see you do a video using her styling techniques, and comparing and contrasting them to your own..you all use alot the similar methods, such as hover diffusing
I think the other influencer you may be thinking of started Top Down Styling...
This is for Volume & Definition.
It is sectioned upright (same sections) and brushed straight up starting in the top section. I think she puts product on section each time before brushing, and doesn't use a comb. It is awkward, but some low D people recommend.
I would switch to a bottom up upright sectioning with stylers in first.
Ouidad official Rake and Shake does that but uses 5 sections (bottom, middle back in 2, above the ears, and crown. You rake the product and smooth with index and middle finger or smaller width comb as you break those sections into smaller ones,
BUT i think using the 3-5 sections upright with product in, brushed & combed is what i shall try.
I think you're right, this is more for those with thicker, fuller hair. I have thick hair and a lot of it. This technique works exceptionally well for me. I also do not get any matting at the back. I do have pretty short hair as well. I have hypothryroidism, so have had hair loss, and thankfully do not see any extra hair loss with this technique. I also let my hair air dry for about half an hour before diffusing to help with the dry time. I don't think you had too much frizz. You look really good!
Thanks! That makes sense!
@@GenaMarie I think it's not for everyone, you're hair looks good no matter what though!! I'm still in the process of growing out extremely damaged hair which is not curling (on the top) :-( So I'm trying different techniques all the time trying to see what works best. Thank you for showing other techniques and also your own, its very helpful.
I going to have to try this even though My hair is shorter. I also have Bangs. I think I can make it work
I think this would be even better on shorter hair and bangs!
Hi Gena can you make a video on how to cure Dry scalp? 🙂
I keep trying this, maybe I’ll get the hang of it eventually
It's definitely a tricky one! I need some practice too.
@@GenaMarie honestly, might not be worth it for me, I’m an upright styler
Thanks for trying out this routine. I just tried this routine this morning, it was okay, but more stringy than usual, less definition than regular brush styling. (I have fine, low density wavy/curly hair for reference). The other routine that is similar is"Top down curls method" by Type of Beautiful. This one seems to work better for me, and I only do if I'm in a hurry and is good for volume. But I always seem to go back to regular brush styling if I really want good definition.
Ooh that's right! I definitely want to try that next! Although it's pretty similar to my regular routine.
I wonder if there is a way to do a hybrid method with this where you can section the same, but start by styling the bottom layer upright and THEN use this method to style the top and middle layers. I had the same concern about the bottom section roots when I first saw the video, and I do struggle to style the top half of my hair upright.
This could probably also work with gel worked in before brush styling.
Yeah!
I tried this method three times so far and everytime I don’t like the results my hair ends up going too forward towards my face. I end up more frizzy because the gel application isn’t as precise and when I flip up the back is funky. It’s easier for me to just do upright and I have more control of all those issues. But it looks so easy and I wish it worked for me.
Totally know what you mean! 💕
Hi, do you have a healthy dye suggestion?
Got any recommendations for shampoo bars and conditioner bars
I love the methods you show, but I have some questions. How do curly hair techniques work if you like to swim and workout every day? I just can't imagine taking the hours this all takes more than like 2 x a week. The results are great but yowza! Its a chore for sure! Thank you for alll your content!
I would think wearing a swim cap would be a good idea to keep your hair from drying out from the chlorine and constant washing. Curly hair should only be washed once a week.
My hair is fine thin 3b fragile high porosity curly hair. My hair didnt grow until age 4. I have scalp showing. I was told to wash once a week with conditioner and only shampoo every other week. Is that correct? Any tips? As a latina having really thin fragile curly hair is not so common and its so hard to find real helpful advice to help strengthen hair like mine and for growth. Ive had my hair like this my WHOLE LIFE. its not damage because i dont mess with my hair. I dont dye it or straighten it. Im afraid to since its so fragile. And if its my genetics its not obvious since my mother, sisters and family ALL have full thick curly hair.. And then theres me...someone who had this hair type my entire life. My hair grows sooooo slow as well. Sometimes i question if it grows at all 😭 Please help 🚩 I dont use heat or towel dry. I can just gently squeeze the water out and thats enough, itll dry within an hour. I dont use too many products because i get build up fast. I use lightweight products. My hair is also very very frizzy it sometimes feels like cotton. Balancing adding product with not adding too much because of buildup to not get frizzy or greasy is really hard. Its a mess.... Help me 😖 i want those bouncy curls at least if thickening isnt an option.
Top Down Curl Method by Type of Beautiful is similar to what you are referring to. It’s an awesome technique doing the top sections first and working your way towards the bottom and focuses on both volume and definition!
Yes!! I need to try her full routine although I already do a similar one!
Gina: I am having trouble getting rid of the crunch and the globs of stringy curls. Can you give me some tips? I saw the "shaking out" of the hair, but that does not get rid of the crunch. Thx
Ya maybe this method isnt best for ur hair. But thanks for showcasing it and introducing us to a new youtube curly girl. Love your videos. My hair is going gray and my waves are becoming straight. It's really hard to figure out how to get my hair to curl like before. Do u know any curly hair videos that has experience with this?
No problem! I have a video about graying if you havent seen it: ua-cam.com/video/WklJzc84SDs/v-deo.html

Types of beautiful is the channel with the Top down method.
My hair hates brushes. Tried the Denman brush and The Tangle Teezer.😢
I tried it..all it did was knots hair and made the fall uncomfortable. I think this is more for 1and 2 level curls. I have 3c and it was a nightmare
Your hair always looks good, you have a knowledge and knack with styling. My hair is very similar to yours except my back has a looser curl pattern. Wondering about this.....If I try this, maybe separate the head in thirds, then do the back first upright, then flip for the other two sections? I don’t know. When I’m in a major hurry I will upside down style in the shower with leave in and gel plop for a bit then diffuse. Otherwise I get my best results upright damp styling, brushing out in much smaller sections. I don’t know may as well give it a try.
Yeah! I think the back section should either be done upright or broken into more sections and brush up and back not forward
I like what it did for the area around your part. It’s got volume there. Sometimes we sacrifice having frizz for volume. As for the rest of it, I think you do better, maybe modify it so it works for you.
Yeah the “no part” look turned out great!
I also struggle with my scalp showing
Yes same here I don't do this method
seems like it would be easier and make more sense to start with the back section and work up.
I think it's the fit curls
Type of beautiful does something similar. She parts differently and doesn’t use a comb after.
Yeah! I need to try it
Helppp my curly hair is stringy and doesn't clump but at the bottom it clumps too much is I don't finger coil and it's not even curly just clump or to big clump amd it looks really weird because my hair is stringy and not curly at the top half and the bottom is really clumped
Even when I finger coil at the top and add product it's still stringy and wavy also my hair Is low porosity so the top drys soo fast but even if its wet it still won't clump
Top down method is what you’re looking for 👀
Looks like it's more work. Honestly, your way is better for your hair type and looks better. Thanks for the comparison. If your hair went wonky in back, someone with thick curls like me will be one tumbleweed!!
I could see it being a fast routine for someone that has the hang of it. And you're welcome 😊
Manes by Mel pulls clumps right up.
Definately keen to try this. Another youtuber i follow "marisas curls" posted a video with this method yesterday and she does the back section using upright styling and splits it in half down the middle. This may work for you to avoid the matted back? 😀
Yess I was tempted to do it that way but wanted to first follow Sophie’s method. I think that would help though!
@@GenaMarie makes sense 😀 im wanting to buy a styling brush this year so i can try these techniques out. Just need to find one i like
Top down styling by Katie with type of beautiful.
I tried it. Didn't work for me. my hair is kinda long so not to mention it was a struggle.
This will not work for my hair. I would get lots of breakage. I like the way you fixed and hid your scalp.😊 I seen a video from Katie with the top down curls. #topdowncurls. I really enjoyed her method and it worked on my hair.👍😊
Yeah I want to try that next!
Well I'm not doing this method, it took you over 20 min to dry your low-density hair, I have high density. I don't want to know how long it will take me.
Hmm if you know what works great for you, then does all these methods make since?
Testing out new methods are fun to try out to learn new things and share with others who they may work great for. There’s things I liked from this routine, like using a comb to separate clumps that I’ll be incorporating in my regular routine.
I have not been able to get my hair to look nice when I style upside down. I have velcro hair syndrom so when I turn upright my hair sticks to itself and creates a frizzy matted mess all over my head. 🤷♀️
Same!!
Sophie shows some great tips to get it unstuck, but I still struggle as well
Very informative... However I know you're a pro UA-camr and I love your videos. But from an experienced curly who's never had it straight, the few at your face when you talked about curling the wrong way. I think you're actually curling them them the wrong way, and they were fighting to go the right way. That big S shape they're making when they're dry is what it looks like they're going against their natural direction. Hope that helps.
Yes you're totally right and I realized this too during styling. I said in the video how when trying to brush the entire section at once, I'm not able to let the curls go in their correct direction because the brush is horizontal. I tried both directions, over and under. However I think I just need to hold it vertically on each side and go in the natural direction of my curls like I usually do. ❤️❤️
Definitely not an ideal styling method for low density curls
Your own routine is way more better than this ..
