The latest update from Deadline indicates the project is ramping up. Multiple writers have already met with Max and WB executives to make pitches on how they would go about retelling the Potter story.

A new scripted Harry Potter television series is coming! The series will be a faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s original Harry Potter books, marking a momentous new chapter for the Wizarding World. Here’s everything we know so far.
In April 2023, it was revealed at Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max Streaming Press Event that the Harry Potter books are to be adapted into a new TV series.
The news comes in tandem with the announcement that US streaming giant HBO Max will soon become Max - and the new Harry Potter television series will be a Max Original when it launches in the US. .
The new adaptation will introduce you to a new cast for a new generation of fandom, and will be full of the fantastic detail, much-loved characters and dramatic locations we have loved for over 25 years. Each season will be authentic to the original books and bring Harry Potter and his incredible adventures to new audiences around the world.
The Harry Potter books were first adapted for the screen back in 2001, paving the path for what would become a beloved 8-film series that we still celebrate today. They will always be at the heart of the magic, but we are excited to hear we will have the opportunity to relive these stories in exciting new ways.
Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content described Harry Potter as a ‘cultural phenomenon’.
“We are delighted to give audiences the opportunity to discover Hogwarts in a whole new way,” he said. “Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon and it is clear there is such an enduring love and thirst for the Wizarding World. In partnership with Warner Bros. Television and J.K. Rowling, this new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years.”
J. K. Rowling, who will serve as an Executive Producer said of the news: “Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I'm looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long form television series.”

let's be fair to netflix. for teens they have hit some things well. think wednesday or one piece. they have yet to do a decent movie but they have had some decent tv series for that age group at least and let's face it any harry potter series will be aimed for teens. i have a good deal more faith in netflix writers for series than movies.

I hate to say this but I would bet $1000 that they race swap characters, make some gay and trans and they'll highlight those story lines. Because writers and Hollyweird forces that on everything now, even though its not needed.

I'm extremely hyped for this TV series since it most likely it be very faithful to the books! So, we can finally get characters and situations that were left out of the movies! I do love the movies, but I'm still excited to see something that is more like the books!
Its Harry Potter, so I will definitely check out at least the first couple of episodes. But if Max decides to go the way of Netflix then I will be done with the show. If they say they are going to be faithful to the book, then they better be faithful to the book. No agendas please.

It is hard to be hyped about something that i am already so familiar with. I just want them to expand the Wizarding World and explore the other schools and how some of them use magic differently. I just want new stories.

Starting with a reboot that's truer to the books could lay a great foundation for future projects!
@@BatmanLikesSuperman That is only if they do it right and if the series will be as popular as the movies were. Because they could pretty much cancel the series if it's not profitable. I am a bit skeptical about whether they are really going to hook a new generation for 10 years. To be fair, I'll be 37 in ten years. I wouldn't want to wait another 10 years to have new projects on screen. The Wizarding World should've been expanded way sooner.
We should appease for both favors.
Have the show play out for those who want a accurate portrayal of the books and see it play out better, and for those who have not read the books (providing them important and entertaining plot lines that was left out from the movies)
While also simultaneously releasing spin offs, limited tv series, and special episodes that expands the world even more with additional stories and content; for those who want MORE.
My only caution, is that they keep the cast totally British, as the original movie series was. I'm not really interested in a American version, at all. I hope that the author, insist upon an all British casting.😊
They can do one book per season which is actually great. They can literally bring every page to the screen, hyped!
Think Max better drop some coin to get a known writer with skins on the wall then a bunch of unknowns with marginal portfolios. I watched some of the Last King and was not hooked to continue to watch it. The fandom expectations for this franchise is very high. Getting the right writer(s) and casting right is critical.
One of the things I am curious about is whether they plan on changing the current iconic architecture of Hogwarts, with it being so iconic and ingrained in our minds. Everything from the score to the actors from the original movies are iconic, but there's just something about Hogwarts! Don't get me wrong, I am super excited for the project but I am just curious how they will handle this. Will they keep iconic parts of the previous movies or give us an entirely new representation of the wizarding world. How do you think they will go about this?
I think they will hear out all the ideas first before making a final decision.
I think some things will change but everything is green screen now so they can make it look however they like.
@@mrow7598 I mean, they made the exterior of Hogwarts however they liked but they made a whole ass model of it. Probably gonna be a lot of green screen, but since it's a decade long project I do hope they make or re-use some of the sets.

I love Harry Potter as much as any Potter head but it’s way too soon to just do a reboot, but call it a TV show. I think they should’ve made this an animated TV show then they could actually do something different and create the world in the way we’ve never seen before, either that or wait another 20+ years or do we spin off?
Actually, there is one thing I think would be good. If they took the last of us approach, and developed entire episodes and stories around the lore we know exists, but really never fleshed out in the movies or the books, then this could be good.

None of these names give hopes. Som unknown, other from Netflix, and the last one had a hand on Hunger Games, which despite having a fanbase, are not good films, especially last ones.
Already concerned. And if the Netflix one will be chosen... yeah, be ready for 99% of misscasts and no respect for the source material, which every Netflix producer/director likes to do.

I think those is a good chance to start over the H.P universe. Starting from the original books. Hopefully this time the H.P universe remains consistent. The worst changes (in my opinion) to be undone is obliviate curse, the time turners from the cursed child and voldmort having a child are all the worst. With the obliviate curse she changes the way it worked. This was okay for the 7th movie but not fantastic beasts since that was supposed to be cannon and the movies are an adaptation of cannon
I think some of these directors will be involved with the Narnia series on Netflix.
I hope they both adapt the original story much more faithfully and expand a bunch of unused concepts, lore and world building details at the same time.
I’m kinda 50/50 on the reboot while yes I think it could be good and they can expand on things left out by the movies. But I also think they could have just done what Star Wars did and made more movies like prequal movies about voldamort before he become you know who or a movie dedicated to the marauders and snape

I absolutely love the idea of this... but I seriously hope JK Rowling gets some tangible control over the decisions made. It's ultimately her work, and it would benefit the franchise and the Fans at large if it was true to the Source Materials. The words written within the books, need to be taken literally... there should be NO room for a Director/scriptwriters interpretation of the source material, it should be as close to 1:1 as possible.
I just want a faifthful adaptation of the books that's it. The more they'll try to be "creative" the less interested I'll be watching this.
I want to see the First Wizarding War, like the final days or weeks leading to that night at Godric's Hollow.

I agree. In terms of the original story that's the only sort of reboot I'd be interested in. It wouldn't take 10 years and end up never finishing like Fantastic Beasts. Also, they could include all the interesting and fantastical bits, characters, and storylines that were cut due to budget.

If you don’t want a long form 1 hour long episode reboot then you’re a movie fan only. Giving each story multiple hours to tell faithfully is such a great idea and would be so bad ass. The movies are honestly pretty bad. Entertaining but they got so much wrong and left so much out. So much so that they’re not even considered canon but instead their own thing. I think some prequel series would be amazing as well and then mess around with some new stories. Just don’t allow woke politics.

It seems like this reboot is 5 year out minimum. If season 1 re-telling TSS comes out between 2029-2034, I don’t think it’d be “too soon”. Thats 18-23 years since the movies ended

Radical idea: invest in developing/writing another book series within the HP lore. We can do much more with a book series than risking everything on a show, movie, or game.

It's actually the other way around. Doing anything based on existing extremely popular books will sell no matter what - it's a much less risky project than trying to sell a completely new product. Plus - books in general make WAY less money than other media nowadays.
Possible shows they can do:
A show based on the Hogwarts Legacy game.
A show based on the founding of Hogwarts. Show Hogwarts' early years up to Slytherin leaving the school.
A show based on the First Wizarding War.
Can’t lie I rather them base it off one of the fan fictions I listen to. Probably better then the books! Goes into so much detail about the social, politics and history of the school, the world, the families and the magic used.

The have a lot of space to make it different. Movies are already very far from the books or games.
@piotrnowak8725 true the movies are different but they are still nostalgic for people and a live action TV series is going to be constantly compared to the movies. Look at the recent percy Jackson series as an example of that
@@vanguardplays3418 Comparisons can't be avoided but each one should be a separate thing still. I have a soft spot for books, movies, video games and even mobile games. It's all connected and is a part of something huge. I see a lot of potential of it becoming even bigger and greater regardless of returning to the beginning with the main saga.

Hahaha. I thought about that too 😅 Maybe like their style of storytelling/writing? I guess a good example would be how each of the movie directors seemed to have a slightly different take on the world Columbus/Cuaron/Newell/Yates.
When I heard they want to put more focus on diversity and "modernizing" it. I lost interest. I'll always be thankful for what JKR has already done for the wizarding world. But im also annoyed at the fact that modern Hollywood always needs to make things political and pander to people who dont watch or read this IP. Hollywood also has a thing for raceswaping redheads. And changing the ethnicity of characters for diversity points. They did this with the recent Percy Jackson series on D+. In the source material they describe characters a certain way and how they should be depicted then change it cause there's not enough representation or diversity in the original material. Then the author comes in and defends these actions despite the fact that they probably wouldn't have made these changes when the books first released as it was made that way for a reason. Idk I'm all for a series that stays true to the books and original material. But lately I've wanted it less and less. I'm glad JKR is involved, but I really dont like this idea and am not on board with it much.
I would very much hope these writers remain faithful to the source material but with a few added tweaks to make the show feel new but also feel familiar & by tweaks I don't mean adjusted for "modern audiences" , that has become such an awful trend taking exisiting IP'S destroying the core fundementals then gaslighting fanbases when they have valid complaints.
Given how the media & others treated the author she has no obligation to adhere to their demands given their delusional vile behaviour.
I want to see a reboot because while I enjoyed the movies at the time, theres far to much left out that should have made it in there was supposed to be more in the OOTP but WB's cut funding. I want to see tom riddle leaving Hogwarts then returning with his appearance visibly changed due to the horcruxes but yates runied it by stuffing in Romance & comedy where it wasnt needed & they muted Harrys outburst in DD office I wanted to see his fury at DD but all we got was a muted version. Also snape was never at Godrics Hollow the nigt the attack happened, that was shoe horned in to make snape sympathisable
I want to see all that was left out including ron being his comedic smart self instead of his lines being given to Hermione, he's the wizard street smart, she's acedemic smart you can thank steve kloves for runing Rons character in the movies. I want to see Harry's fianl battle in the great hall rather than outside randomnly flying around the castle, that way people know riddle is gone they have proof
I want other characters that were never shown to be given a role, introduce Narcissa much more early, show peeves Regulus black, Andromeda black etc. I also want this show to acknowledge a certain someone admitting to sending dementors after Harry, hell I'd take Harry getting some sort of revenge over her in the show rather than doing nothing.
In terms of other shows, the founders would be great to see in action & unfold see what made Slytheryin leave, see his development of the COS & even watch how he created his baslisk. Or a small part in the show showcasing the classification of the unforgiveable curses 1717. I would also like to see Riddles rise to power & how truly terrifying the death eaters were along with the 2nd WW I don't ant this dumbed down. A Maruaders show would be good to or what about something featuring the weasley twins. Something related to HL would be good if only to see Isadora's perspective & see an altenative path.

@@RetroRaconteur Saying make it purely about the wizarding world that is depicted in the books, not to include any real world ideologies what so ever.. Don't change anything, don't make Harry gay, don't make Dumbeldore black, don't make Voldemort transgender.. All these studio companies love to ruin things, if this show has anything no matter remotely how small changed about the race, gender or identity of any character this will tarnish the Harry Potter brand and legacy of the books and movies.

Tbh for me you got to separate the movies away from the series because the movies did change some of the stuff with them having a limited of time on the screen plus at least it wont be murdered like game of thrones since we know how it ends, i do like the movies however i did not like how they ended the movies since they took away two most important parts from the books, how the final battle went down between harry and tom plus harry fixing his wand which to me was more important than running around Hogwarts but that is my opinion

They can't wait too long between seasons or they are going to have multiple actors playing the trio. The child actors would outgrow their parts.
The founders I wouldn't mind same with a completely new set of characters but I don't want a Marauders series unless it's their time after Hogwarts where James isn't too big headed and obnoxious. Cause them fighting Voldemort or pretending to in the case of Peter would be very interesting to see as we don't know much about what happened after they graduated and Lily and James got killed.
Er.... we didn't love the Harry Potter series because of the battle scenes. We loved it because of all the joy and whimsy involved in Children discovering magic for the first time. If they write from the perspective of drama and conflict then it will be a shadow of what a Harry Potter series should be. It would be more fantastic beasts than Harry Potter, and we all saw how Fantastic Beasts ended up. Cancelled.
I loved every aspect of it and the HP's concept of dueling and wizarding war is my favourite.
@@piotrnowak8725 yes, but it wasn't all dueling and conflict. The drama was mixed in with comedy and light hearted moments. But if you watch Fantastic Beasts you'll see its more darkness than light and when the movie ends people have a residual tension that makes them feel bad. HP movies are feel good movies, which is why they're popular. I've seen some fan made movies and they're all the same, characters pointing their wands at each other in some non stop fight scene. Its very draining on the viewer. If the new series is mostly darkness you're not going to like it. Apparently its easier to write scenes where people "shoot" at each other with wands, than it is to write light hearted scenes that make people laugh and feel good.
@@RobertA-hq3vz I admit I didn't like fanmade movies focused heavily on action. HP is first of all a huge story made of many smaller stories but there is place in the franchise for more action than in the movies while staying story-driven. I never considered it a feel-good story. It is a hero's journey with ups and downs that eventually lead to happy ending but there's much depth and lore that comes with the story. The world is unique and it takes a lot of detailed description in the books or a lot of screentime. to do it well.
@@piotrnowak8725 Just think of all the times you laughed in HP. Harry fighting Ron over the spare potions manual, the awkwardly asking girls out for the ball, All the Ford Anglia scenes, Ron's comedic relief through out, and many many more instances. You might remember the action scenes the most afterwards but it was everything else in between that left you feeling good about it after the movie ended. After watching Fantastic Beasts I just felt more tense than good, and the movies got more violent as they progressed. Muggles being murdered in their homes, babies drowning, etc.
@@RobertA-hq3vz Harry Potter was a story that grew up with the viewers. Fantastic beasts tried to continue this with adult main character. I liked the approach and the movies being more dark as I was not a kid anymore when they came out. I don't see it as a contradiction to the HP wizarding world, it's just a change of perspective. The humour was imho much better in the books than movies.
It’s too soon for a reboot
Harry Potter is one of the few franchises that, if I’m being honest, I’m going to consume whatever media they give me. God I’d love new stories though and firmly believe that, especially if adapted for film or movie, JK Rowling needs to be a consultant and not a writer. Fantastic Beasts could have been so good if she could actually write for movies.

The last Kingdom, Vera, Bounty Hunter, American Princess, Devil Hour, Hunger Games.....oooh...this is going to be painful. They are mixing a bunch of genres here and they are bound to clash heads. As like, they have thier own methods and styles to it. And Vera...well....it is a TV Police drama. I am not sure what the plan is here, but it is bound to cause problems here. If this fails, they will be the fall guy and it will take the pressure of Rowling. The only thing good in this is Vera....it is a good series. This is one hell of a risk that's for sure
I don't think this means they're going to try and mix those genres. All of the writers mentions worked on more than what I referenced in the video. I just thought it would be helpful to get at least somewhat of an idea about the shows they'd written for and tried to pick the ones that would be recognized the most.
Didn't say they was, I said it is a mix of genres who havent done much fantasy and too many writers is never a good thing. There will be a lot of clashing over agreements and stuff. I know the series is going to be heavy, because they rewritting the whole storyline with new improved works, messages, world expansion, character development, theories and new information. It will be a 10 year timeline about everyone. Sure, it will be about Harry Potter, but it will packed full of iinformaion about everything. Voldemor will be much different now, we get Peeves finally, and some other background info that was missed from the films and books....but it has been said that they will be a modern version of a rewrite. Many years ago i knew it would eventually happen because of money, but i was concerned that it wouldn't happen in my lifetime as they would probably have to wait for JK to pass away so she can't block it.
I get that people are so interested in Hogwarts but the universe itself includes so many other interesting schools as well that I hope we can be able to explore and see. If they do this right, it will be amazing!
i doubt we'll see that till after 4th season of this so they can keep casting consistent. the main series head is going to need to be in control of evrey charactrer that appears there
Just not Micheal Lesslie. The new Hunnger Games move was horribly far from the book and none of the changes they made were neccessary or added anything to the story. They just took away any depth of the charatcers.

@@RetroRaconteurTo be fair - any part of Hunger Games is rather difficult to adapt. Most of the action happens in characters' minds, so for the movie to be close to the book there would have to be a lot of dialogs added to make sure the audience understands why the stuff happens - in those books it's much more important to get why stuff happens, not what happens.
He pretty much made the entire movie about the games - in books the games were not really that important. So he pretty much decided to f*ck the whole core of the books and make an action movie.

Oh god I hope it isn't the last kingdom writer. Fans of just the show will think that they did a good job but it wasn't even a pale imitation of the books. It had some of the best source material around and it made it worse in every single way. They would somehow find a way to change more than the films did!
I can imagine that the best writers don't want to spend that much time writing shows based on books, but if these guys write the show it's over.
This reboot will probably be bad anyway. The days of faithful and fun adaptations are over. This one will tell us how to live our lives up to Hollywood standards at least 10 times per episode, focus on CGI/battles and miss the complete point of the books. We already saw the movies take a weird turn when they completely ruined the character of Ron and Hermoine in favor of portraying Hermoine as a one dimensional boss babe. Any reboot filmed in this day and age will be a complete joke.
If they really stay true too the books then I expect to see Winky in Goblets of Fire and Half Blood Prince is my favorite book but the worst movie for me they took out the whole back story of Tom Riddle and his family I want that back in. I expect them to put everything back in from the books that they removed for the movies or they can just keep it I wont waste my time
This is my thought if the writers did not read the book or have the love for the Harry Potter world then he or she cannot be chosen
The writer must have the love and understanding of the characters to even attack a new angle of the story.
Just because a person have all these accomplishments does not mean they will do the show justice
For example one of the biggest pet peeve i have with the movie is regarding the black family and how they wrongly portrayed Draco ..
Sirius black the god father is the cousin to Draco
Nymphadora who is apart of the "Order of the Phoenix" is the cousin to Draco
The house or secret headquarters is the property of the Black family which mean the property of Draco.
Truly not Secret at all from the Black family because Draco mother ,Nymphadora mother , and Bellatrix which all sisters grew up in that house.
The movie never explained that at all lol.
Darco and harry had a heart to heart and how he truly did not want harm to come to him but he had to do what was asked of him.
They never explained how in the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 Draco knew it was harry the whole time .. Draco never wanted to kill harry.
If anything he wanted Harry to leave the wizard world because of danger he knew was coming

These are some talented writers. Just hope there aren't too many creatives trying to pitch in as too many writers usually create messes, despite how talented they are. Too many creatives in one space lead to a higher chance of creative differences.
But if this series fleshed out scenes like Hagrid's acquisition of Aragog, or Tom Riddle's childhood, or the exploration of certain events prior to the story can lend to a greater incentive for this series to exist. Show us scenes we haven't seen before that carry weight within the story. Show us the conception of the Deathly Hallows or the creation of the Dementors or the founding of Hogwarts.
Yeah that part about maybe having multiple writers was...interesting. Hopefully whoever lands it will be committed for the long haul. 10 years is a really long time, but I wouldn't want them to lose steam like Benioff and Weiss did with GoT. They started so strong...then ran out of book material 😅
@@RetroRaconteur i doubt they'll keep the same writers evey season. let's face it unless they get extremely amazingly lucky the same writer for the tone of the first two is probably not the best fit for the 5th-7th books.
Not a fan of the reboot. Tell and original story and expand the universe. Hogwarts legacy did this beautifully. The best part of the game for me was the story.

I think a story about the founders of hogwarts in the form of an hbo show should’ve been done first and then by the time that’s done they could’ve done the cursed child with the original cast and when all of that is said and done I think that should’ve been when they rebooted
They could probably make a mini-series as a promotion for one of the seasons of the main show. Netflix did it with The WItcher a few times.

Why are they even doing this? The movies got the feel and the tone of the world completely right skd we don’t need anything else. The movies are all 10/10 classics.
Same reason why Disney's rebooting their fairytale movies because they want to either relive or remind people of that nostalgia for those things. The problem is that you're not able to chase that and it's not as good.
The movies are good because the books are 10x better. They can do justice to them.
@@piotrnowak8725 You can never do complete justice to a very well detailed book series. In that case each book would need to be like 3 or 4 movies. And the movies really are well crafted films with a special feel and mood to them that are completely unique to them.

I think for this reboot, they should use the Hogwarts Legacy foundation. Honestly, that game should be the gold standard for Wizarding World content moving forward.

Same. I've heard of quite a few of the shows, but admittedly don't know much about the writing. I have been meaning to watch The Last Kingdom at some point though. Have heard good things.

I hope for the writer who worked of the Vera crime series. Afterall, Harry Potter (especially the first books) is a big whodunit kind of story, so she would fit perfectly. Vera is a very good detective story!
Executives want to get richer by making the same shit over and over and over again.
The original series is the car in the driveway, the new series is the model of that car you keep on your shelf. No matter how good a model it is.
And the fact the original series made so, many mistakes doesn't give me much hope.
