Three pillars is a very good core concept that puts into words what captain's need to be doing. Lotta people refer to the captain as the AA greytider, but that's only if you fail to apply yourself as the actual head of the station.

Love how the pillars here are:
    1. Yourself
    2. Your heads
    3. Crew
It's like an order of priority in a way. If the captain is good, the heads will be good, and the crew will be good. I might consider doing cap on low pop then!

Go for it! Worst case scenario it goes horribly wrong, which is how every shift goes anyways.

I’ve played well over 150 shifts as captain and I agree with this 100%.
    here is what I learned:
captain should always focus on the department that needs it the most. This includes security! some people mald about the captain helping out sec, but as long as the captain isn’t using sec gear and he is needed in order to stop a threat, he has every right to do so!
your name will go through the mud, you can never make everyone happy.
As captain, I know this is kind of fucked up but, you should be selfish and cherish your life over any other. You have the strongest equipment and all access, including the nuke disk. If you risk your life in a dangerous situation and die doing so, you made the situation WAY WORSE. because now the threat has all access, all comms, your infinite laser, and the disk. It is more selfish of you to fight and to die, giving this gear to the enemy, which may lead the station into turmoil. APPLY THIS ESPECIALLY IN NUKIE ROUNDS.
be a chill and easy captain to get along with, but have a firm hand. don’t let crew walk over you or you will be taken advantage of. Walking into the bridge is all fun and games until it was an actual syndicate agent waiting to jump you. be firm.
lead by example. don’t metagame, it’s not cool. don’t be a shitter, the crew will not care about you.
always go the extra mile for each department. give med and science needed mats, give security medical equipment, and lend a hand for everyone. (you are the most efficient cargo technician!)
You are the head of the heads. Steer each head the right direction. Micromanaging and doing everything yourself does-not work. You should give big orders for the department to fulfill. Sometimes sec gets bombed and all I have to say is, “engi to sec, bombed” and directly call CE to security. Another example is medical. I’ve called CMO and doctors to security to treat criminals and/or secoffs. WORK TOGETHER. USE YOUR CREW. YOU ARE NOT ALONE.
Stay on top of everything, and every situation. make sure that security is doing well, make sure cargo is making money, make sure that the station isn’t falling apart. About 3 times a shift I will just stand in bridge or my office and just scroll the chat, reading every bit of information that I have received. Your time is valuable and you should always have a plan on what to do next. For example, if the station is fine, simply help out cargo with bounties!
last thing I want to say is that, you have the ability to set martial laws. In revolutions, I announce a martial law about half a dozen times and say that anyone carrying a weapon will be arrested and shielded, or killed.
Another round I announced to the crew that I will be wearing security gear and as a 2nd officer since security was vey understaffed and there was half a dozen of syndicates roaming around.
I’ve never got bwoinked for doing anything like this. It’s apart of the escalation rules and overall ROLE PLAY.
don’t play captain or security to much on your main character, the community is toxic and ive lost some friends because of it, it’s pretty sad.

Ohh this is the Peash Anjer! I still remember when I suggested he make a memorial burger for some friendly fire incident I believe. I said the funds should be put towards their medical bills and he immediately yells for me to come to the bridge and awards me a medal. I’m Shoots-for-Moon by the way.

Captain here, some things I learned:
As a leader, you must be yourself willing to do what you ask of your crew, if you instead abuse them like pawns while you relax, they won't like you so much. easiest way to do this, is before issuing an order, quickly imagine yourself in a lower position's shoes getting that order, your reaction will likely be their reaction.
While captain is a stressful role filled with paranoia, this doesn't mean you should go at everything guns blazing, be calm and collect as it is absolutely not a good look if you gun down the tider for a harmless prank such as tripping you, losing you some of the crew's respect for you.
Maintain balance over the control you have over the station, and freedom the crew has. nobody likes a dictator, yet anarchy shouldn't be allowed either. A good example of this would be at roundstart, getting departmental priorities straight, and then letting them loose, whilst overseeing their activity, and correcting if absolutely necessary, as remember, you aren't their head of staff, and they should be the ones majorly responsible for corrections.
Remember: While your opinion as a captain may matter greatly, this doesn't mean it should be the only opinion, as maybe they know a bit more than you do about the situation and/or how to fix it.
ALWAYS have a plan, and ontop of that, a few backups, because if you aren't productive, you are wasting time. Also be prepared to make many changes to this plan as you go. adaptability is key.
Constructive criticism is important! not only should you hand it out (in a kind way) but also, you should be ready to receive some yourself. nobody is perfect, but together, you all can be better.
And remember! you don't have to be the fun captain to be a good captain, you just need to lead your crew well, and gain their respect. although, a fun captain is usually quite appreciated.

oh absolutely, a leader is only as good as the people who follow them.

Captain Nomu Skree here, I like the video. Strongly agree.
TLDR: I've seen it myself. Captains should save crew at every moment they can, they notice and they will fight like crazy.
I played tonight on Grasshopper (67182), an organized team of nukies attacked us. I fought with the crew and dragged critically wounded to safety constantly. The entire crew fought tooth and nail to defeat the nukies. I went down at one point and the HoP, QM and a chemist went far out of their way to save me. We fought constantly up until evac, killing every nukie but one.
In the post game OOC people mentioned how often the cap saved them; I loved to hear that the crew felt taken care of.

This makes me want to put in the 10 hours of security I've been dreading in order to unlock Cap lol

Thinking about almost every time I've played captain on Harmony, where I incentivise the crew with medals, everyone is such a shit they don't earn any, and I crown someone as my "greatest entertainer" with the champion belt only for them to blow up 3 seconds later.

Being captain sure is an experience, your job isn’t one that is bound by game mechanics, but more on the role-play side, you don’t exactly have a goal besides “keep shit working until it goes south”

For SOME REASON in the rounds I have played it's only ever been the rd who I have noticed being a shitcommand, and only once. One hos round on a low pop sever the rd announced this:"fuck you all I'm messing with the ai" then the it seems he put in the harmimov module into ai upload! Next thing we know we have no grav, no air, and all the doors are being bolted! We did manage to fix the ai with the NT default modilule but I had already called Evac (I was HOS) and it was too late to recall
