This is the best how to whip tutorial I’ve watched , as you menshioned mist ppl don’t talk about unweighting the back, before I saw this I use a lot of thrust trying to push the back wheel out when you just need to relax and sort of let it do it for you
Dude, this is really helpful. I remember a friend talking about shifting backward on takeoff years ago but it never clicked. You’re right and the way you explain it makes sense. Most videos don’t talk about these things. Super helpful.
That’s my New Years resolution: get my first really comfortable whip! Thanks for the info plus I saw you ripping some trail on another video, you got a good riding style! I’ve also subscribed, happy new year!
Great video, seriously helpful and your whips genuinely look sick. Me personally i way prefer your style of layed down whips, ignore the dudes saying your doing a table
Yess.i need some different approach and what actually happen in reality, what to do n try. I believe there is untold point in MTB media video rather than your tutrial. really helpfull Thanks
I learned this recently. I was so stiff w my arms that I couldn't do bar turns. My coach told me I'm not pushing into the jump enough and first time I did that my arms felt so loose in the air and I was doing bar turns the same line like 2 jumps later. Night and day difference. Still working on whips tho. This was like last week I learned it.
most vids dont tell ya: whip opposite of your rear foot. if you ride Right foot forward, whip to the right, that way your left (back) foot can "push" along with hip movement.. and it wont fall off the pedal as easily
I’ve found it comes down to personal preference more than anything, my outside foot or my right foot still gets floaty and almost comes off depending on how much I’m trying but ether way time and practice teaches best 👍.
@@jackridestrails oddly, i ride MTB "goofy foot" - that is to say right foot forward, complete opposite of skate/snowboard. it feels off to ride left foot forward. dunno why this is..
@@mikestivers8302 it’s personal preference man! Just ride what feels comfortable to you and you’ll find which direction suits you best for most things 👍
@@jackridestrails the unweighting of the rear wheel and the way you explained it is so interesting and helpful and the reminder of what Ben Cathro said definitely shows you do you research and actually want to help us. Love to see it !!!!!🤛🏻
Great video bro!:) I have a question: I ride left foot forward, does that mean it’s best to whip to the right? It feels more natural to do it the same direction as you, but I find it hard cause of my foot placement😅
Cheers man! The foot you ride forwards with doesn’t necessarily dictate the direction you whip, it’s more down to what feels most natural. Try both ways and see what works 👊
There could be a few reasons for this, the main one is that you possibly don’t have your weight far enough back or that your standing up too soon. Have a few goes jumping it normally and try focus on those things. 👍
Great video - quick question - When you say unweight the back wheel, do you mean while you are taking off or in the air? If you unweight while you are taking off wouldn't you lose you "pop" of the jump? If it's in the air that doesn't make a lot of sense to me since you're in the air and there's no weight on either wheel.
Thanks man! So what I mean is as you pop off the lip you lean back and as you start the whip if you then bring your weight forward off the back wheel it makes it free and easy to move around, if that makes more sense.
Does left foot/right foot forward help with whipping? For example, if u are right foot forward and trying to whip right, would it be harder to whip compare to whipping it left? If that makes sense
It’s more personal preference than anyone else, what I did was long and wide corners slowly on the flat in like a carpark or something and you’ll find a direction that feels more comfortable to you 👍
If you want to whip right push the left side bar to the right on the face, if you want to whip left push the right bar left on the face as you leave the lip, the rest sorts itself out, but maybe a lil more need to do the inverse to bring tail back on bikes as there's no gyroscopic effect from an engine, just the wheels only, It works shockingly well so be prepared, have airtime for it to come back around, Here's a video explaining it from the mouth of the G.O.A.T. ua-cam.com/video/cr7NV0wplIc/v-deo.html
For me the way I like to whip is really leant over which does make it difficult to try a straight right table without kicking my wheel out as its my favoured way to whip. I personally wouldn’t have classed that as a table since i through my back end out but to each their own 👍
"Whipping" is so cringeworthy and lame! I can't stand seeing it-the sort of thing that kids on BMX's do and should grow out of, seeing adults do it looks rather sad.
ok so after someone turns 21 they should just resign themselves to a 9-5 desk job, never do anything fun, and just count down the days until the sweet release of death?
there's a huge difference between the average guy doing a whip and then seeing a pro rider doing a whip.... most people seem to think its jut trying to push the back end out while in the air, while when you watch some one that has whips dialled the entire bike gets to 90degrees and then pulled back also most like an Unturndown
You missed one key thing that helped you (me)😁
YES! Both yourself and troy helped me a lot with getting her out there 🙌🙌

Hardtails are the best 🔥🔥
Indeed they are! 🤤
“Unweight back wheel” why didn’t I think of that
To be fair if you learned to whip without it you do it without noticing 😂
I'm just trying to get to the point where I get straight, go forward, and move ahead.....
I’m not sure I know what you mean 🤔
@@jackridestrails It's part of the lyrics from Devo's song Whip It.
@@ejej6934 that’ll be why I was confused 😂
I'm kinda weird I scrub to the Right and Whip to the Left The best tip from me is just go Hit a good sized floater and just try to whip
Im kinda the same 😂 if I’m squashing a jump I turn the bars the opposite way I whip 😅
I found out accidentally just doing tables lmao
Yeah its a very similar motion but the difficult part is being able to do a table without whipping and a whip without tabling 😅
Is it easier with clips
For my style I’ve found clips pull me back too quickly but it’s something to experiment with as long as you watch not to pull with them 👍
If you want to whip right push the left side bar to the right on the face, if you want to whip left push the right bar left on the face as you leave the lip, the rest sorts itself out, but maybe a lil more need to do the inverse to bring tail back on bikes as there's no gyroscopic effect from an engine, just the wheels only,

Naw, that was excellent....
Thank you man!
I can do a backflip but my whips still look terrible 😭
Whips are about all I can do 😂
coming from a scooter background we call it a 90 tweak. nobody calls it that anymore. but i learned whips using bmx in an hourglass bowl.
Nice one man! Always been keen to try some skateparks at some point 🤙
you know at 2:46, that's not a whip, that's a legit perfect table top. Once you lay the bike right down it's not a whip anymore.
whip is when you whip the back end out...
For me the way I like to whip is really leant over which does make it difficult to try a straight right table without kicking my wheel out as its my favoured way to whip. I personally wouldn’t have classed that as a table since i through my back end out but to each their own 👍
yes getting sidey ways
It’s the only way!!
我的脑子学会了,但身体没有😆
sick, but you're scrubbing more than whipping here i think
Never thought I knew how to scrub 🤷♂️😂
@@jackridestrails just a bit leaned over I think but maybe just cuz the hip
The hip helps when landing sideways… which I do a lot 😅

We grow old because we don't play and take the fun anymore not the other way around.
ok so after someone turns 21 they should just resign themselves to a 9-5 desk job, never do anything fun, and just count down the days until the sweet release of death?
