THE BEST QUALITY SILAGE WE'VE EVER MADE?! | RED CLOVER MOWING, ROWING, BALING, MOVING

  • In today's video we are onto cutting our reseeded red clover paddock for the first time for silage. First we get out the Samasz butterflys to mow and leave it to wilt. Then Bro goes on the rake to rake all together before the MF 6499 and Fusion 2 McHale are out to bale all up. All will be baled up and saved to feed for our weanlings in the winter. Red clover provides high protein, high quality forage.

Sowed red clover 4 yrs ago as a trial. One thing I learned with it is to let it flower once a year. Quality will drop for that cut but extends its lifetime. Normally do it for second cut. It's on the ground atm. Letting it flower allows it to self seed and also put energy into its roots for the next spring.

We do feed the calves red clover. Works well but they leave the red clover stalks. But the cows gobble them up.

Thanks for making this week a little better! Phil Have you ever used a sickle mower So would you want the rake spinning as slow as you can get but still making good rows to keep the damage to the clover leaves down to a minimum Liv should be painting little stick men pointing a gun in the air on each bail to keep the crows away 😂😂😂

If it’s anything like alfalfa the most important thing are making sure blades are sharp because it’s cutting softer stalks higher up and dropping the rpm on a rake, and if you’re tedding using a reducer box, get the uncut bit in the nitrogen tested, remember a while back we had issues with too much nitrogen on the fields so we cut back on the slurry and went to 500 gallon per acre with the trailing shoe and aerated every other cut.

Don't see many red heads-is this the first cut? Used to let it go to head to mature the roots and back reserves. You're right about cutting height,it's 3 inches plus. Great silage but try pushing that up in a pit-slippery. You can Ted it but at less than 1000rpm in engine and 540 at pto. You can turn it first thing in morning when it's moist, you won't lose leaves. Just little snippets to help if it's useful

The best mix we grow for making bulls grow fast for slaughter is... 50% lucern 30% Red clover and the last 20% is 12 types of grass and herbs.... It performs really well on ground that varies in quality, because some of the mixture is always growing in the difrent spots.

Hi there I’m over living in the US now, just recently found your channel. Fantastic by the way!
One farm I worked on made as you said alfalfa and a rye grass mix for “wet bales” over here, they feed value was unreal. If the weather was right you could also make dry hay off it here.
I’m guessing too that you would want to get the clover cut before it goes to head?
Any plans on increasing acreage of the red clover in time?
5 years was most we got of a lay here.

We have lots of red clover and it should be solid red even in grass. We only grow it to help the other crops because to us it's not worth anything by itself. We do fescue, rye, wheat, clover, brome and orchard and it gets as high as 11 bales to the acre then the following year the perennials take off and do really well for several years.
