- The Kawai R-50 playing some stock patterns through 10 different drum kits. (Apologies for the shaky video)
The original LCD display on my much loved Kawai R-50 was fading and almost unreadable. With a little searching I found an excellent site that showed how it can be replaced with an OLED display and also how you can make your own 4 x drum kit. Using this, I added an additional expansion board increasing the number of drum kits to 10. With four more switches (and plenty more wiring) the number of kits could go up to 16.

Rotary position 1:
- R-50
- R-50e
- R-100
- Sequential Circuits TOM
Rotary position 2:
- Favourites kit 1
- Favourites kit 2
- Yamaha RY30
- Akai XR10
Rotary position 3:
- E-mu Drumulator
Rotary position 4:
- Cheetah MD16

I always liked that machine and mods are awesome.
Loved the R50...my first drum machine....
The Kawai R-50 is my favorite drum machine I own. Such a lovely machine
But without single outputs it's almost useless
@@synthesizerhome2041 it's got an assignable out and stereo, so in theory you have three outputs.
That was dope! I had a R-50e back in the early 90s and then another one a few years ago that I flipped (demo of factory sounds and patterns on my channel). I've got a R-100 with the 3 ROM mod, but this mod for the R-50 is awesome!

Hey, excellent video can you provide where you got the screen or did you make it and what parts did you use because I’ve been trying to do on my own and it’s become a very often overwhelming method of trying to solder onto the display screen but I like the colors that you have black background and yellow letters. Thanks. 👍

How cool! The display changes everything for me, I hate non-backlit displays. I have a Kawai GB-4 session trainer. Anyone know if it might be possible to get light (led?) into the display? Eventually a replacement display with light...

Hi, if you power on the R50 with both the Erase and Accent pads held down it will do a full factory reset. This includes clearing all patterns and presets you have created.

Great! Can you tell me where to buy this expansion board?
There are a few options depending on your project and how much you would like to do yourself.
One issue was finding a rotary switch that would fit in the R-50. The ones supplied with the expansion boards are usually for the larger R-100.
Circuitbenders has a 4 slot expansion board. The board will fit, just about. The supplied rotary switch will not.
MTG (Music Technologies Group) has a 3 ROM switcher which basically turns it into an R-50III.
On eBay I see an 8 ROM bank switcher for sale. I have no information on this.
If you can burn your own IC's, R-Massive have an excellent page on making a single chip 4 bank expansion.
