Hullo Lindsay, you are doing a wonderful version of Plein-Air. I have no trouble believing that you are not working outside in the snow! Not everyone is looking to be James Gurney! I have used pigment crystals in painting and printmaking too. I rebelled just a bit in college, as most printmakers want multiple versions of THE SAME image with no discernible difference between the prints. I loved creating “Artists Proofs” for making original artworks! I used inks impregnated with bigger chunks of pigment and crystal pigments to create to “explosions” in fields of colors. The big difference is that these pigments are lightfast and not dyes in chunk form.

I love it that you are revisiting older products. We need inspiration like this to help us to use what we have; what we all paid good money for when it was the latest fad! Keep this retrospective of favorites going to help me "shop at home!" I've got Brusho, and the rocks are brilliant!

I agree about the paper, just found canson montvaul that was like 7 to 10 years old stored in a moist trailer outside and it worked wonderfully. I found old cheap brushes and they were also better than my new ones. Even some crayola watercolor brushes they actually worked, they said they were made in dominican rep. I think they may have been camel hair, but if you try to use a modern crayola brush you cant even do a wash. But these were wonderful as a mop brush.
I always adore how you add so much color to your subjects that are actually more monochrome in real life.

Oh I need to get my Brusho out of their box and try this. I did abstracts on multi media paper which is glossy and it created a nice effect. Thanks 🙏 for the inspiration 🎉

I have two bottles of Brusho. I very rarely use them. Even with just a pin prick opening in the cap, for me it's hard to control. When I want that type of special effect, I rub a watercolor pencil back and forth over some fine sandpaper onto wet or damp paper. 😊

I have a complete set of Brushos that I obtained years ago for crafting use. These days I often use them to create backgrounds for watercolour or gouache paintings (great for fish paintings!) and I also use them to mix sprays, following one of your recipes from years ago 🙂. I've also mixed a little mica powder into Brushos to create a metallic or pearl effect. It's great to see an older supply being brought into use again. Thanks for sharing!

Love the way this came out, the colors are so pretty.
Loved watching the process and yes you are correct none of these are lightfast( I ran some tests on many colours and all brands you have here and none of the colours remained unchanged with some almost disappearing totally after only a few months. I still love the unique character of these powders for sketchbooks or artwork that is to be scanned and reproduced digitally.
Love this snow painting! I don't have any bursting wc sprinkles and probably won't get any, but it's good to see how you're using yours to great benefit! 👍
p.s. IMHO Royal and Langnickel brushes are some of the best "bang for your buck" value brushes out there...esp if you don't want to spend a lot.

I do something like that with some (retro😅) faber castell watercolour sticks, rub over it with a little sharp knife...nice for a 'flowerfield'😊 thank you for your video💗

I actually bought some brusho and preceded to spill it everywhere. I wish I had used a pin to make small holes instead of taking the whole seal off! Lol

I love brusho and I'm glad I found out about the thumb tack trick from you a while ago. If you have tics, the pinhole makes a huge difference to the clean up! 😂 Mostly I can tell when they're building up (its sort of like knowing you're about to sneeze) but occasionally they get past me.

This was really neat. I enjoy seeing videos with stuff like Brusho since it's pretty impossible to find "new" content with more, I guess "niche" products? This, Neocolor IIs, Inktense, all that sort of jazz. Thanks for that, UA-cam.
Those big blooms of texture on that clump of rocks is absolutely gorgeous! I'm definitely tempted to pick up a few other watercolor powder products. Stamp Gang powders seem to have super whimsical colors, even if I'm not the biggest fan of the sparkle in them - although that certainly has its own allure at times. I'd never heard of the Infusions before, but I like the bottles!

Oh! I forgot about brusho. I have a set of those. It's really cool. I made a mess with it, but it's really pretty. I used push pins too and it helps with control because it explodes.

Gosh I love this. These colors are just wonderful. I wasn't getting it until about 1/2 way through, then I got it. I don't have brusho, but I'm thinking of a way to give this a try. thank you!

I bought the 3 sets of Color Burst in 2022 and have never used them. But I love the idea of them. I guess I should get them out and start experimenting. I wonder how they would do on a canvas? I think I'll try on just a gessoed canvas and on one with watercolor ground added.
I'd do watercolor ground and you may been to fiz it as well.
I have some of the Ken Oliver Sparks, and a few bottles just labeled Sketchbox (from one of their boxes), so I do not know the actual brand. I struggled trying them out with bleed-through. I even tried to gesso a page first and it still bled through! I'm going to try again and be more subtle like you were. I admit, I had powder everywhere the 3 times I tried them out! So, yeah, I needed this video!
It's because they are dye based, so are these even tho they are called "watercolor pigments"
@@thefrugalcrafter Really, wow. They are beautiful but I didn't even think to research their base, I took them at their name. I will try them again and use them more subtly as you did. Your rocks turned out really stunning using them.

I grew up in Maine!!! I live in CT now but family gets me back every couple of weeks…..wondering what part of Maine you are in? I grew up in Scarborough on the water,my husband 8n So. Portland so spent a lot of the time on the coast and headlight….can’t wait to hear!❤️

Or when it is cold and snowing, could you draw and paint from your car, without having to move it?
I know you don't like travelling for safety issues when it is icy and the end of Winter start of Spring, but when you go grocery shopping, could you increase your plein-air subjects, and fruit and vegies inside, take a few snaps with your phone camera?
Sarah in Scotland does use her car, you could too!
(While we have 5 snowskiing, field areas of Australia, our Sydney hot days can reach 43 degrees C, where nobody wants to be in the bright, glaring sun with 88% humidity, so we do work and eat in our car, with the air con and car engine on, or studio days, or a local park (in the carpark) or Botanical Gardens, but not out in it, and at the beach with sunnies and work glasses only in the shade!)

I live in Phoenix Arizona where it gets so insanely hot and right now at the beginning of spring we're entering the temperatures in the 90s F. That is such a wonderful idea, thank you so much for sharing it.
I take reference photos when I am out and about. I could paint from my car and have before while waiting to pick up kids but not in years since they are grown.
@@thefrugalcrafter I do the same thing although my kids are grown and I'm disabled so I don't spend a lot of time out of the house now thank goodness I took a ton of photos before lol

I was looking at the Kremer Pigments site and they sell something called XSL pigments which act exactly like Brusho; but they are lightfast! They are bonded to methylcellulose. I got some Brusho in Olive Green and I'm not sure if I got a weird bottle or what -- maybe the bottom of the vat? But mine is predominantly orange rather than reading green, so I was disappointed. I guess yours looks the same???
There is orange but you get green as well.
@@thefrugalcrafter I decided my olive green brusho is more orange than yours, I think my bottle was a weird one. I didn't get the right mix of pigments.
What kind of fountain pen do you need to use the Dr Martin bottled watercolor with? Thanks!
I use a jinhao shark fine tip. I use the Radiance, the hydrus will clog.

Hmm its just fine grinded pigments no? Just the same youll use when making watercolors. Pigments mixing with gum arabic🤔 you also can use thoose pigments, if the surface is wett when applying. Dont really get the difference😅 are those pigments here food colors or how it is called? Sorry english isnt my first language
I believe these are dye based, so they burst wildly when they hit water, unlike pigment powders, which would sit. I think they bind by staying the paper like fabric die stains clothes. The see are more like fabric dye powder than pigments.
Is there a powdered gum arabic or some type of binder in these powders? Because I don't want them to just not be able to work in a professional piece. If these were in my budget I would so love to have a little bit of a few different colors even if all I could do is use them in my SketchBook.
I don't think so. Think of them as a dye like fabric dye or a marker. They absorb into the substrate. They are not lightfast.
I enjoyed watching this video, but this is one art supply I am absolutely not interested in using. I have 2 rowdy German Shepherds and I shudder to think what the inside of my house would look like after they tracked it through the house.
