I'm not a repair pro, but took your recommendation and brought an Amscope. This has certainly saved squinting shortsightedly through a magnifying lens when doing odd jobs for friends and the occasional bit of smt work. It's great being able to perceive tiny things in 3D! Thanks!
I'm a hobbyist. I like learning and soldering and fixing all my retro game consoles. Capacitor replacements on genesis, fuses on dreamcast controller ports, RGB upgrades on the SNES. My eyes start to go loopy after a while. Thanks for this review, i'm definitely pulling the trigger on this
Amscope, Koppace, Lucky Zoom and many others are identical models sold with different options. So your choice is yours but this has to be known as Amscope tends to the highest priced. The OEM is the same, just as Giant bicycle Corp makes 80% of all carbon frames for semi and pro road bikes, Cervelo, Colnago and even Trek are outsourcing to Giant.
I just made this purchase and I 100% vouch that this is an awesome scope for the money. I do electronics design and it is great for fine pitch rework and inspection.
+Alexander Hartdegen I tried the 20x but found the 10x is ideal. I just did a qfn part and it was easy to inspect at 10x. 20x almost puts you too close. I would not want more unless I was doing crazy wire bonding/hybrid circuits.
I just got one of these and I threw the 20X pieces on to see what you were talking about. I see what you mean, the view at first seemed much, much smaller, especially if you use the eye relief pieces from the 10x. However, I noticed that the 20X eye pieces actually have built in eye relief. If you press your eye all the way into the eye relief, you will see the full image circle that the 20x eyepiece can provide, and it's actually about the same as the 10x. It is, however, less, comfortable as your eyelashes actually touch the area around the lens.
Matt, I’ve been very close from returning this scope due to the “keyhole effect” I’ve been experiencing myself. Which is super embarrassing. Thank you for sharing the tip!
So should I look at the Amscope that has the 5x,10x magnification instead ? It’s only a few dollars more but if it makes it more useful then it’s worth it. Thanks.
This looks perfect for me but at $450 in Australia I think I need to see if I can find something similar over here :/ thanks for the video Louis very informative
Heya Louis. About the eyepieces, there's actually the SE-402Z which comes with both 1x and 2x objective lenses, so you can use the 10x eyepieces but have 2x the zoom with the FoV of the 10x. Thought you might wanna know. It's a bit more money (about $30 more than the 400Z) but well worth it just for the extra objective lenses. The light is also built into the stand for the scope so it's not in the way of your hands and such. The downside to that though is the light is tungsten whereas the 400Z uses an LED, so if it ever goes out you might have a hard time finding a cheap replacement.
jjenson2006 Wow, I actually did not know that. That's good to know. I personally have an SE-402Z now and yeah, the working distance is MUCH lower than how the SE-400 is situated in this video. It's still perfectly usable so I have no complaints, but wow. I wonder what that's all about.
hi i just purchased what i think is this microscope www.amscope.com/20x-stereo-binocular-microscope-boom-arm-light-1.html second hand to save time and money having one shipped to Ireland when i seen it i thought it was the SE-400Z seller did not state it but i noticed mine has 2x objective ? what does that exactly mean i do not understand microscopes so what would be better to have 1x or 2x it came with wf10x wf20x an wf5x eye pieces should i sell this microscope on an get the se400z ???
What is the exact working distance in inches or centimeters above the stage to the barlow lens when using the supplied eyepieces of 10X and 20x with the 1X barlow or objective lens? Is the working distance below the objective greater with a non zoom microscope as opposed to the stereo microscope with a zoom function?
Its like $250 now! Cant believe 7 years later & they still havent upgraded or changed this microscope, just inflated the price of a decade old MS smh. Im just gonna get the Tomlov DM201 pro digital microscope for $170. Hope I dont regret it
i have a question? do you sell motherboard parts(resistan,diode,etc..)there are people confuse about that.so you can earn more money if you sell that :), the people like you work and trust you.
No, selling parts sucks. I used to own rossmann supply, that company almost ruined my life. Selling parts is an insane waste of time compared to repairs, same amount of work but for 5% profit instead of 100-300% profit. It also makes you responsible for someone else's failure. When someone rips, or burns, or breaks the part you sell them, you get blamed for it. As a repair company I don't get blamed often because I control the customer experience. Most of the time, I control the speed of the repair, the work done, their expectations. I can't control if USPS holds a package, or someone blows a backlight fuse. I appreciate the idea, but in reality, selling parts is miserable. I would say digikey and mouser do an excellent job with the simple parts, and L2 Computer does an excellent job with the more difficult to find parts.
Great Videos! im debating between the SM-4TP and se400-z. I can afford the more expensive one but wonder other then the semifocal and camera capability does the sm-4tp have any other features that warrant the extra cost?
I almost broke a se400-z when I went to turn it out of my way and it almost tipped over. I'm sure the sm-4tp has better stability and that for me would be a deal breaker and why I'm not buying the se400-z.
I have a question...again... How much easier it is (well would be for me) to microsolder IF i had a real two eypiece microscope, coz now i use a 720p webcam, well the electronics and sensor from it with homemade objective (epoxied together bunch of lenses from broken cameras, lasers, who knows where, and plumbing supplies with threads, to adjust distances/focus/zoom :-) And i can get perfectly nice sharp focus image on computer screen, at different magnifications, BUT it "feels" strange to see your hands...detached..and there is a small time lag... I dont know anyone that would have me use their pro equipment to see the difference...
Oh, i forget to tell, the whole clusterfuck of lenses (that eat up 98% of light coming in because of no anti-reflex coating) is there just to get 15-35cm(depending on magnification) of working range, with single lens i would get nicer image but like 2-3cm range
Thanx. I thought so... Your channel is really inspiring, really love the merging of tech with your life/business philosophy stuff ;-) so it never gets boring listening to your repair videos :-) It made me realize i could make at least some real money from it, not just fuxing stepped on,beer spills and cat pissed stuff from friends and especialy not from "friends of a friends" for a price of few beers:-) So i just made a high magnification loupe from a projection tv optic assembly i found discarded, and added a led ring light. It kicks ass of that screen and webcam at lower magnifications. Too bad gypsies managed to crush/scratch 2 out of three (RGB) optic assemblies when they scrapped it for copper, but hey i got one without scratch and it works amazing :-)
Louis, I seriously hope AmScope gives you shit for pimping their scope(s). I just bought an SE400-Z, and I can only imagine how many they've sold because of this video (and a few others). Seriously, they should be sending you free shit. =D
+alex green We would suggest the SM-3TZ-54S if you need a boomstand (non simul-focal, camera addition optional) ~$475. If you can get by on a table stand, please see SM-1TSZ-144S (non simul-focal, camera addition optional) ~$400.

I just bought this microscope. The 20x lenses work fine if you don't use the rubber eyepieces.

I'm stuck on deciding this scope or one that connects to a tv ? Can you do work looking at a Tv? Or should I just get this scope ?
Difference between se400 and se400z? someone please reply as I'm new to this.

+stazeII i doubt that will happen in this lifetime.
+Louis Rossmann lol. fair enough. =P
No sound
Its just me or this microscope came down in price to 100.
And once rossman recommended it, went up in price.
You have much space but you must stand if you want to look in it I think
Unfortunately it's going to cost me almost the same amount of the microscope for postage :-(
Yeah it's a heavy box. Where do you live? What do you use now?
Dublin, Ireland :-)
I cant find this model? and similar models only magnify up to 20 times. please let me how yours compare
Louis, do you still recommend this Amscope SE400-z microscope, or is there a better model you would recommend today.
thanks.
+alex green If you have more money move up the amscope line.
My budget is around 450 max, what would you recommend.
+alex green We would suggest the SM-3TZ-54S if you need a boomstand (non simul-focal, camera addition optional) ~$475. If you can get by on a table stand, please see SM-1TSZ-144S (non simul-focal, camera addition optional) ~$400.

That microscope is not $175, its $220 on Amazon.
When I link to something and a bunch of people buy it, the price goes up. It happens every damn time. :(
@@rossmanngroup ☹️
Today, it's $167!
10x is way too much for soldering also it has almost no focus adjustment you can see a clear picture only at a fixed distance.... i don't like it
Ha ha ha....Inflation. This scope is now $210.
