Kicking is one of the most interesting variables in sports imo. The fact that the creators of football thought “let’s put something into the game worth 1 or 3 points” is genius, and has greatly contributed to some of the most tense moments in sports history. So many classic nailbiters come down to a guys leg, in a sport where the ball is mainly thrown, is hilarious and awesome.

Kickers are hugely important to field position and the mathematical strategy to make point spreads harder to overcome. “Kickers aren’t footballers”
Well ignoring the fact they’re the only ones who’s foot touches the ball.
The punter is a specialist defence player.
The kicker is a specialist offence player.
And they’re specialty is so important that just like oLine men you only notice them when they get their role wrong, and usually then proceed to blame them for a loss. Because a shanked punt let the opponent get into field goal range easily. Or a missed field goal losses a game.

Dominant teams would keep scoring and scoring off easy field positioning. Let’s say to solve this it’s turnover on downs and start at the 20 like a touchback. That just makes the game 1 dimensional…a bit more boring. Instead of an extra point you always go for 2. Disgusting 🤢 that means a higher probability of scoreless games as well…a turnover happens in a stalemate game in good field position they won’t be able to score.

That's extra men for positions and no need to hang the game on a 50 yard field goal or an extra point. One of the aspects of the game that's been forgotten over the years is that originally the game was intended for teams to run the ball, not pass. It wasn't until the early 50's that QB's began really cutting loose. Imagine what the game would be like now if it hadn't evolved? I'm not saying Brady or Manning or Rodgers for that matter wouldn't have won Super Bowls, but their roles wouldn't have been near as significant. So, in all honesty, the kickers that are in the mix of being real football players are tied to the QB position because without those long passes that eat up only a few seconds of clock, they would've been even harder pressed to get within field goal range by running the ball and taking up precious seconds that could've easily been avoided. Lay off the kickers, they're getting paid and I think they're doing a good job.

  • @jameslay337
