In case you haven't got the answer within 8 years: Racing engines are kept in check by air restrictors or in other series by a rev limit. In both scenarios they can theoretically rev much higher than their rev limiter, epecially on downshifts as there is no pressure in the cylinders from burning fuel. Shifting down early gives you more engine brake, which is useful on a qualifying run. Of course, you risk locking up the rear tires though. However, these GT500 machines had monstrous amounts of downforce so you could do it on a one lap qualifying. And it is more the gearbox that takes the penalty rather than the engine. But after qualifying you could change everything anyway back at those times.

He defacted to Toyota in 2008, driving for teams LeMans and TOM'S. He's in the same camp as 11 these days.

Some of these drivers like Kogure do it in races also. Painfully raping the gearbox. Most sincere mechanical sympathies.
