A problem I have is my jerkbait fouling when casting. Not sure if it's the brand of lure, the way I'm casting, the leader I'm using,... too many variables! Also, does scent play a role? You mentioned using a sharpie to color a lure darker but wouldn't that make it taste bad to the fish?
Typically with moving baits they react to the movements I don’t think scent plays a big role in my opinion. Try going to a little heavier line to make it a little stiffer and that should solve the fouling problem
