SICILY MYTH AND HISTORY

  • Sicilian history has always been steeped in mystery and magic. The island was said to be inhabited by giants such as Polyphemus and Orion, and guarded by frightening monsters, most notably Scylla and Charybdis. Sicily was contended between Greeks and Phoenicians, plundered by Barbary pirates, and oppressed by imperialist powers. Sicilian people rose up against their tyrants and founded one of the most elusive and powerful secret societies the world has ever known, namely the Mafia. Sicily was also the birthplace of great geniuses - from Archimedes to Cagliostro - and was chosen by Aleister Crowley as an ideal location for his Abbey of Thelema.

to me Sicily is one of the most beautiful and interesting places on earth. I loved everything about it, art, history, architecture, people, nature, food..and on and on.
Mafia is just part of the whole tapestry, no need to avoid visiting Sicily based on exaggerated rumours. So many wonderful things to experience on just this island.

Excellent! My grandparents emigrated from Sicily over 100 years ago. However, they died before I was born. My parents who were born in Ohio and Michigan were so desperate to be accepted as Americans that they shared very little about their Sicilian heritage. So thanks very much for this. I really appreciate it.

As a Sicilian I have to say this is an incredibly interesting video. I’m sorry you left out some interesting facts about WW2, when Sicily was the first region in Europe to be liberated from nazi-fascism thanks to the allies. In July 1943 there was the Battle of Gela, sadly this story is not so common as the Normandy battle that happened after. Apart from that thank you for spreading so much knowledge about my beautiful island!

5 or six years ago, I was priveledged to spend significant time on both Islands. both communities insisted that they were not Italians but Sicilians or Sardinians. I was surprised at the ability of both groups to secure their history and research their ancient history. Neither seem to accept assistance from UNESCO but preserve lots of ancient architecture

My mother was born in Calatafimi ( Trapani) where the Mille under Giuseppe Garibaldi defeated the Borboni … there is a monument called Il Pianto Romano and next to it an arch “ Qui si fa Italia o si Muore! “ on May 15, 1860 we celebrate the Unification of Italy!
I’ve visited the site and I’m proud to say I’m Sicilian 100% . I remember as a child the old time Sicilians called Garibaldi “ u Zu Peppe” .

As regards the first settlers, Sicani went from Spain, Sicels from East Europe, and Elymians their origin is mysterious, maybe Celts from south France maybe greeks from Troy. Concerning the phenicians, they never have setlled inside Sicily. They only found some branches near the sea (Panorma, Motye, Soloeis) before being chased out by the Greeks

The video is full of historical details , very well explained even though in short words. As an italian video watcher I've imagined this video very good for people coming from another country and willing to know the basis of sicilian history and culture. As I've seen many other videos by Muon Stone, I miss somehow this time more attention to myths, spiritual influences, or more focus on a special writer or poet or artist. A number of famous writers and artists is present, but only in a list . Very well done as ever , anyway.

My father, his older sister, and my grandparents were born outside of Agrigento. They came to the US when my father was about a year old. My grandmother was illiterate, and from 5 years old she worked in a salt mine. My grandfather was a farmer and sheep herder. When he came to the US and my father was going to school. my grandfather took my father's books to work with him at night and learned English. The family had 15 children, and 9 survived to adulthood. My grandfather knew the value of an education, and all the children finished high school. Two of the sons went to college, while the other boys opened their own businesses. My grandfather became a US citizen, voted in every election, and was happy to live in the US. Where he saw opportunity, my grandmother longed to return to Sicily to live a life that was primitive by anyone's standards. She was in her 90s when she died in the US, and my grandfather was in his late 80s when he passed. My grandparents lived in a cold-water flat all their lives, but my grandfather always said that it was better than living in a hut or cave as in Sicily. He was grateful for the opportunities life presented in the US. My father visited relatives in Sicily five or six times before he died. He spoke a dialect that few people in Italy could understand. From my study of Italian, I found listening to my grandparents and father speak that many of their words ended in -u and had definite Arabic influence. My brothers and I, along with our cousins (first, second and third cousins) all have an interest in Sicily. Some of us have visited family members in Sicily, and we've seen where our grandparents and my father were born and brought up. So much has changed since my grandparents, my father and his sister came to the US. The cousins
drove us around to sightsee, and we met distant family members and friends of people who had settled in the US but never returned to Sicily. In some cases, we saw old photographs
of people who left the island, never to return. The people made their way to the US, and
most never had enough money to return to Sicily---not even to visit. In other cases, the ties were severed with their move. Even though my father is long gone, I still am in contact with the cousins in Sicily----and I think our lives have been enriched by our contact.

The Sicani and the Sicel languages were derived from the same root language family as Roman Latin. Therefore the Sicilian language is not "so-called" before the Romans invaded. It was well developed centuries before Rome invaded and constantly evolved before and after, like all European languages did.

What a weird mixture of fact and fiction. Personally, I think some myths are cute but the one about the origins of the mafia has got to stop. The original mafiosi were the armed and violent rent collectors for the aristocrats of Sicily. When land reform happened those bands of men still wanted to collect money from the peasants for doing nothing- so they continued doing that. They came up with the corny myth that they originated in the Beati Paoli, but there's no reason to dignify the myths of criminals by repeating them.

I noted the swastika on the robe of the warrior 03:01 and learned from Wiki that when it is left-facing it is called sauwastika. I already knew it is an ancient religious icon used as a symbol of divinity and spirituality in Indian religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, but marvel at how it came to be on a Sicilian mosaic. :-)

    • @muonstone7088
      @muonstone7088  3 роки тому +3

Thanks for pointing that out. As a matter of fact, swastikas and sauwastikas are not found in Asia only. Undoubtedly, the name "swastika" is Sanskrit, and East Asia is actually the only region in which such symbols are still widely used. However, swastikas and the like used to be common in most ancient cultures including (surprise, surprise!) ancient Israel.

Frederick II is rather mischaracterized and certainly under described here. He was not opposed to Muslim; he, like any ruler, was opposed to open revolt which the Muslims of the innermost regions of the island were engaged in. His solution was as ingenious as it was efficacious and ensured peace for the island as well as security for the deported Muslims under his personal protection in Lucera. Also… I love how Roger II and Frederick II, the greatest sons of Sicily and the Regno, get just a few sentences all together.

Believe or not, Italy is a fairly young country. The Kingdom of Italy was founded in 1861, almost a century after the United States of America! Before that time, the Italian peninsula had been a patchwork of lordships, kingdoms and republics in constant warfare, whose populations hailed from all over the Mediterranean and beyond. So, to make a long story short, the concept of "Italian" or "Sicilian" - as a race or nationality - is more a social convention than an actual genetic fact. After all, each region in the world has always been a "melting pot" in its own right to a varying extent.

I am delivering a sermon to you 🙏😊 please read
Consistently Pray for forgiveness, guidance in a good (positive) direction, and for help against evil. Pray to be saved from hell (whatever that may be). Pray for your friends and your family too, it only takes a minute or so/less at a time to pray. Do it and your life will slowly get better, or maybe quickly. It probably just depends on you and the kind of person you are/have been. Don't wait until its too late and you have to suffer the consequences of built up bad karma from immoral acts/unrepented sins. Maybe together we can help make the world a better place by changing ourselves for the better, and changing things around us for the better.
And addressing/thanking the CREATOR, LORD GOD at the beginning and end of your prayers would be a good idea 😊
Or just be my friend if you don't want to say the prayer 😄
I'm trying to help you get right with the LORD 🙏
    Amen.
I have worded a short prayer for you to say if you are not sure what words to use, it may not be the best but here it is 😊
    '' CREATOR, LORD GOD,
Please forgive me and my friends and my family for our immoral acts, please help guide us in a positive direction and please help us against evil. Please save us from Hell and have mercy on our souls. Thank you CREATOR, LORD GOD. Amen. ''
Please say this at least once a day for at least a month, do it longer if you want to and can 🙏
You should prostrate yourself if you don't want to do spoken prayer, or do both 🙏😊 Please worship the LORD GOD and not any idol.
Please put your hands together 🙏 bow your head and say this prayer:
"CREATOR, LORD GOD, please know that I worship you and not any idols. Thank you for everything CREATOR, LORD GOD. Amen"
Say ' Om Namah Shivaya ' out loud or in your head 108 times, or try to do it 1008 times 😊 try to do it everyday if you want
repeat this aloud for as long as you want to, try to do it for like an hour a day or say it in a prayer "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner" 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
You can also say this prayer once a day or repeat it aloud as many times as you would like to:
"Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death, Amen."
    Thessalonians 5:16-18
"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."
    Philippians 4:6-7
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
"O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of mercy for us, I trust in You!" Repeat this aloud at least 3 times or as many as you want, do it everyday if you can
I apologize for all the words 😊 I know how it may look
