Clark Ashton Smith was born in Long Valley, California, in 1893. He was a member of the Lovecraft circle. His literary friendship with Howard Phillips Lovecraft lasted from 1922 until Lovecraft's death in 1937. Smith is remembered as "The Last of the Great Romantics" and "The Bard of Auburn, California", where he lived most of his life. He was fascinated by faraway locations, especially in Europe and Asia. The Great Wall was built over several centuries across northern China, just south of the Gobi Desert and the Manchurian Plain. When China opened its borders to foreign merchants and visitors in the late 19th century, the Great Wall became a main attraction for explorers, whose travelogues further enhanced its reputation and mythology.

I’m sorry you left out some interesting facts about WW2, when Sicily was the first region in Europe to be liberated from nazi-fascism thanks to the allies. In July 1943 there was the Battle of Gela, sadly this story is not so common as the Normandy battle that happened after.
