I never really dropped levels because of demotivation but rather because I got bored of the repetitiveness of playing the same level over and over again, which is why I barely touched Trollmachine for 4 months and only picked it up again 2 weeks ago

This video came out at a perfect time considering I was in the most demotivating grind while playing a level and I finished it last night. As someone who has dropped levels, I've said to myself that if there is a level that means something to you but becomes a massive mind block, giving up is just not an option if you want it done more than anything. It does sound silly just to go through a demotivating grind knowing you should have the level done if you knew how it can go, but that's something I've learned a lot especially after getting unlucky with so many levels. That's why I feel better playing levels even if it takes a large amount of time.
Also, Heartbeat has been fixed already because the cube physics actually work at 99%.

As someone who has 21k attempts on a medium demon (yes ur not hallucinating) my motivation comes from the fact that I enjoy the progression. It feels good to get runs however small they might be. And honestly at this point im used to levels taking me hilariously long to do. Playing a part over and over is just normal now. For me the hardest part is always running from 0. Every attempt from 0 is so much worse than any practice attempt, because as you rack those attempts up, your expectations to beat the level get higher and higher, until every death becomes rage inducing. So far I have 70 something percent on the level, however the last 60% is the easiest part, so 70% is more like 90%. Since the first 40% is so hard, passing it and then somehow dying to an easy part is super demotivating. And the more I die, the more I get annoyed, the more my expectations increase, the higher the stakes. What keeps me motivated is the 100%, nothing else really. One thing that keeps me going is knowing that no matter how many silly deaths happen, no matter how hard the level, no matter how hopeless it seems, eventually, with enough time, I can beat any level.

The main issue would be just the level living rent free in my head after dropping it. The thought of that is worse than braving through the rest of the level, despite the fact that it may be unenjoyable.

Ayo! I've dealt with a kind of grind like this outside of GD (i'm not that good lol). Studying 11th and 12th grade in India can be such a pain and it's a 2 year long never ending grind. It's really really hard to get good grades until the very final examination of 12th grade, and it can be such a demotivation to see that you grinded so damn hard only to get 60% on a test. But only if you get that 60% (you're probably better than half the class by then), you will have chances of doing well in the end. It becomes really important to keep going, even if you don't know if there is an end in sight. Personally, I find that something to deal with that kind of pain is to have something to appreciate about what you're doing.
I used to colour code the notes taken in class not only because it made it easier to read but also because I could look at it and appreciate both my note taking as well as my teacher's amazing skill. You could try something like that. You could admire the progress bar that's fully green upto 93% or heck you could take a step back and admire your entire setup and be like "damn I've got all this gear, must be cool to beat a really hard level on it" or something like that. Or you could appreciate the feel of your sayodevice as you do each click. Or admire every run, even if it's just to 5%. It's hard for people to get past ship parts with orbs in them. Sometimes appreciating tiny things help.

I think dropping levels to later come back to them and realize how much better you’ve got is a great feeling. I beat 100 hard demons before starting to consistently beat insane demons (22 rn) without being overwhelmed and requiring 10k attempts and I’ll definitely get to at least 50 before my first extreme. I still play some extremes and get to ~50%, but I don’t torture myself with the game.

that is the best way to get better, i thought about the great idea to jump from nine circles (my first hard) to supersonic and windy landscape (my two first insanes) and then jump to bloodbath (87%) and sonic wave (57%), it isnt fun at all, i strugle to beat insanes like acropolis even tho i can get far in a extreme, my skill with wave and ship are extremely unbalanced compared to cube, robot, spider, etc.

As someone who is somewhat of a serial dropper of levels I think there's some things I want to add.
First of all I think the most important thing you can do is decouple any shame you feel from dropping a level. For many years of me playing this game I have shamed myself and also been shamed by others for dropping levels. Screw that. This game is as much, or even more of, a mental game as it is a mechanically skillful game. Accepting that you don't have either the patience for the level or the skill for it should be seen as equally acceptable reasons to stop playing a level.
The second thing is that like, its a game man. If you're not having fun, what's the point? Many times throughout my career I said "I'm just going to play for fun," and I don't think I ever truly believed it until I beat Lotus Flower. It was only when I beat it and thought "this is probably the hardest thing I'll ever do," that I truly let myself just have fun with other extreme levels. I would much rather have the mentality of "I want to beat this level. I am going to play this level. If at any moment I feel like it's not worth it anymore I'm just going to stop," than grinding myself into dust by playing a level I'm just not enjoying anymore. I think if you truly want to beat the level and care about it enough you will pull through with it.
One last thing, dropping levels isn't the end you know? There are quite a few levels I dropped back in 2019-2021 that I came back to and really enjoyed beating. If you are continually playing this game you will get better over time and then, who knows? That level you struggled on and spent 10k attempts trying to beat might be something you beat in 2k in like a year. Like I said, if you really want to beat a level, even if you have already dropped it, you will feel the urge to come back to it at a later date, and by then you might beat it much quicker and have a much better experience than you ever would have had if you had just thrown yourself into it when you weren't ready for it.

I always forced myself to play for so many hours as I can per day whenever I grinded an extreme that was hard for me from 2018-2021 and a litte bit of beginning 2022 but then I just deciced at like the end of February 2022 to just not play gd because of mental health issues and it was 5 months long until I came back to the game and I wasn't taking this game that much seriously anymore and just mostly focused to not get into this routine of grinding so long as I could per day again so my mental health would be good and it helped so much and idk when but I started doing the 2 hours session per day (not every day but most of the time) on an hard extreme in 2023 I think and I was just happy to grind without having high expectations anymore and just loved to see how much consistency I build up these days and almost don't care about getting a good attempt, quitting the game for 5 months in 2022 was the best decision in my life. There's still some hard extremes that make me not play it for months, mostly because of it being so stressful to play or it is really boring to grind, then I just play easier demons and have fun but have the extreme still in my mind because I don't want to drop an extreme ever (even tho it is a mental drain for me to think about the level almost every day) so I come back to it whenever I want to or just spontaneously have the urge to play it again.

Don't know if you're gonna see this Aeon, but what helps me beat levels (although my hardest is Stalemate and I beat Future Funk today lol) is watching a youtube video on my second monitor whilst playing. Obviously I don't put full focus on the video, but if it's a long or strenuous level, having any form of media in the background helps keep things fresh. It means that there's always some variety in what you're doing, since when you're playing a level and dying it's the exact same thing on repeat and it get extremely repetitive, so it always helps to have some other form of stimulation which is less repetitive. I probably sound like a psychopath writing this, and having a youtube video in the background probably isn't ideal whilst you're streaming, but it could be worth it to try it out and see if it helps.

I’m doing AA and Michigun’s part has single handedly almost made me give up the level. I just spam attempts to michigun over and over and pass it like 1 in 5 attempts at the part. Then recently I’ve been having the worst mental block ever and keep dying on viprin’s part-my pass rate was like 10% yesterday-even though I do it 99% consistently in practice. It is beyond demoralizing FINALLY getting past michigun and anthrax then dying to some random shit that u nail every time in practice. I feel like quitting would make it all a massive waste of time but it’s so fucking painful constantly dying in the first half just to completely choke when I finally get past it

I personally drop levels all the time, but usually not ones that I have considerable progress on. Generally, whether or not I drop a level depends on whether or not I get bored before I've become consistent enough to reach what I deem to be the "point of no return," when I've become confident in my ability to beat it in the near future, regardless of how much I enjoy it. Basically, every time I beat a level I don't like, I get the good ending of the sunk-cost fallacy.

I am someone who has dropped many levels, such as glide. I was originally intending to beat it as a hardest but after getting 89x3, I got very annoyed with playing it and then i stopped having fun, and so, while being very close to the end, i decided to drop it. This is a decision which i still think was a good idea because its not as if i wasnt any better than when i started playing it, instead i actually learnt even when not completing it. I feel like people dont feel they improve at the game until they beat a level but that is not true at all, sure you may learn more if you continue to the end but the end is not necessary to get better. I think that if you stop enjoying a level entirely then there is no point playing it. Going back to my example, i dropped glide because i stopped having fun with it, i saw it as a complete grind for something that was just luck based, whereas now im going for shardscapes and i am about as close to the end of shardscapes as i was with glide, but even though i sometimes get angry at the level, i still see it positively and i am still enjoying just playing it, therefore i am not going to drop it anytime soon. Sorry if this doesnt make sense but i tried to get my thoughts across...

I hate the idea of dropping as well. But tbh the schedule plan you have would NEVER work for me for two reasons.
I hate having only a set amount of time to play a level. Thats why i never play this game when i have something to do later. I just cant focus. I like to have as much time as i want.
Also, i think instead of playing until i get frustrated but a maximum of 2h wouldnt work for me, because if i already struggle with my motivation that would just mean i play the level a couple attempts an then stop for the day because i am frustrated. I'd much rather force myself to play for 2h, and if by then i still have fun or play well, i continue...
But try out as many things as you can. I hope you find something that helps you^^

Very interesting rambling session this one! Specifically your idea of a schedule has struck me once as well, which I am going to elaborate on in a probably very lengthy comment, so buckle up!
Once upon a time (early 2020) I was a very promising, but unproven player in GD that stuck around since the early days of 2.0, but I had never ventured in Extreme Demon territory yet, even though I found them very appealing (my hardest had been Acropolis for nearly 3 years at that point). Then I suddenly got better gear or smth and proceeded to beat 5 new hardests in a row, culminating in a jump from Necropolis to Bloodbath as my first extreme and the most surprising part was that Bloodbath did not even take me more than 2 days!
It was still early 2020 when this happened, so I was officially a top 150 list demon victor and I was hyped to see what more was possible for me, but it took me the rest of 2020 to beat a new hardest with Phobos, which is basically the same difficulty.
Clearly, I had hit a brick wall. How could I possibly take so long on beating anything harder than Bloodbath, let alone beating extremes in general, when Bloodbath had taken me only 2 days?
Fast forward for 2 years where I had been trying to beat both Carnage Mode and Sakupen Hell on and off before dropping them over and over again, and I began to slowly click everything together. I found out that having set Bloodbath as my ultimate goal for the game had killed my interest for trying to go beyond that, and I set a new ultimate goal with the idea that if I will ever reach that skill level, I will have found another replacement for that.
And whenever I conceptualized this, I began to see why people have been playing “demon ladders” where they build up to a very hard goal by beating easier levels with similar skillsets one by one. Specifically Brandon Larkin, but also BlassCFB, who was known for his ability to just grind out a single level until it was done, had inspired me to do that myself as well. Heck, even Npesta’s Extreme Demon Roulette helped draw inspiration in a way.
And now the schedules come into play. This is because I am also a full time university student so I don’t always have time to grind the game. But I also had a lasting problem with waking up in the morning, let alone being productive and doing study things then. So I devised a plan. I would wake up earlier and since I was still too tired to study, I would play GD for a couple hours.
Of course not every morning is available, so I get frequent breaks automatically that prevent me from getting burnt out on levels, and I feel like I am not wasting my time by actually doing something good with playing GD because I have to wake up early, which gets me ready to go studying for the rest of the day. So even if I struggle with the level I close the game with a satisfied feeling, as I know I did something good for myself that day.
Of course this plan does not work for everyone, but it did help me from being stuck with both university and GD, to making strong progress again. This approach made me go from 14 to 50 extremes by the end of 2023, while I had been stuck on 10-14 extremes total for 2 years until the beginning of 2023.
So, yes, I implore dedicated GD players to start doing something like scheduling or at least get yourself to play a certain level that you want to beat regularly, not because you want to beat that level so desperately, but more so because you enjoy playing the game, and that level is just a goal you choose to set for yourself.
TL;DR Aeon mentions the idea of scheduling where you plan to dedicate time to a level regularly in some form, and I share my personal experience with exactly that approach of beating levels, as it really helped me to not drop levels, and subsequently the game.

For me dropping stuff has always just been a matter of "i do not have fun playing this level" and the most likely cause of it is when the level is balanced in a way where you barely ever get anywhere
RUST is my most recent drop and it was just because after warming up i would have to play from 0 and maybe get one drop attempt every 10-15 minutes because of how astronomically difficult the predrop is compared to the rest of the level, playing from startpos is always really fun but from 0 is just agony and it makes me just want to play any other level so eventually i just decided i wasn't going to make myself play it anymore because i couldn't deal with sitting at the predrop for hours getting nothing notable

I was playing a lot of "To the blue Moon" a couple months ago just for fun but when I started getting good runs I considered making it my first extreme demon (would be a rather large jump because I mostly play my own layouts and the hardest rated level I have completed is some random medium/hard demon from early 2.1). I got 13-59 which I am rather proud of but I more or less "dropped" it. I still play it from time to time because its a fun level but I gave up on the idea of beating it any time soon. For me its mostly a "I could beat this but it'd take more commitment and time than its worth" sort of deal. I'd be super proud of it sure but overall I have more fun creating rather than demon grinding.

    Hmmm interesting topic
I've dropped exactly one level before - Dance Massacre in which I got wrecked by it and took a 8ish month break before beating it because I just wasn't having fun with it. I came back to it when I got back into GD and the community and beat it in around a week. I probably would've been able to grind it out it just would've been really painful (I was playing on 60hz at the time). Of the 4 extremes that I've beaten none of them have given me all that much mental trouble aside from dying to Heartbeat 99% which was brutal to grind for a week after but I knew I wanted to beat it and so I did. For me right now, dropping Bloodbath has come across my mind but I don't want to drop it because I know I eventually can do it it will just take me a while.
Also idk what's going on with you and Heartbeat but I had no issues in 2.2 beating it so 👍

Nearing 70k attempts on it doing it on mobile, I've been repeatedly told I can beat this. In 9 months I only got to 94 twice. And although I'm getting more consistent, this doesn't stop attempts being painful.
It's getting very difficult suffering through extremely painful deaths.
I can drop it, but that may cost me my ability to play gd completely

i have dropped a lot of levels throughout my gd lifespan, most of them being around my personal top 5 achievements for their respective time. my main problem is that i get incredibly unlucky in these levels (meaning i suck, i know). most of the time i start a level, practice it a lot to a point where i make progress really fast until reaching a death at 80%+. and thats when that period begins where i spend another 5 to 6 days getting absolutely nowhere, and then i drop a level at some point (mostly with the intention to come back to it at a later point). take prismatic haze for example, my current hardest. i spent the first 2 days learning the level and getting comfortable with it, and on the third day i reached 94%. on that day i also got a couple of ending attempts, but i didnt make it. and then for a week straight i could not get anywhere past 50% because i kept dying to the beginning of the drop. i got like 2 ending attempts in that week, while i had like 6 or 7 on the third day. and that completely kills my motivation sadly.
i did come back to it last december and beat it within two days of basically constantly getting to the end part. i see dropping as an opportunity to train myself in the meantime, and after coming back seeing what i accomplished in the meantime. i did the same with acu, thanatophobia, hypersonic, fairydust and many more, and i must say: while it hurts in the moment, it can still be good to take a break and do something else

the one level I dropped was "E X T R A W I D E" which ironically was going to be a new hardest by a lot, I had spent 16K atts on it. but I didn't simply drop it, I actually was playing Acu out of frustration and somehow got 61% day one, I basically decided to just beat Acu instead because its harder anyway, funnily Acu took 4.8K atts. (I went back and beat E X T R A W I D E on my new pc in like under 300 atts so its fine now) 😀

I am absolutely not a top player, but I just have the mindset of: what’s the point of playing another level if I haven’t beaten the one I’m working on yet. If I’m gonna play gd, just work on the one im working on. I only go for levels I’ve practiced and enjoy, so it’s not like I’m slogging through painful levels.
I’ve taken one break on a level and it was because i took a break from gd, so when returning I played some easier levels to get back into it before going back to the new hardest. Other than that, I have no issue with how long or how many attempts levels take me

I dropped Acu after 95%, however I personally believe it was a great decision because I was genuinely hating playing the level and had been grinding too much to the point of exhaustion. When I dropped it I felt relieved and I think this would be the same with lots of other levels. The levels I didn’t drop I took my time much more and I had fun getting past 90%, even though that sounds ridiculous. The main part of this game is to have fun so I think if you are not enjoying yourself then take a break, whether it means dropping a level or not.

I've thought about dropping 2 levels ever. That being killbot and sonic wave. I did end up pulling through with sonic wave by simply taking a long break and then I returned and forced myself to play it for extended periods of time. Like a month and a few thousand attempts later it was done.
However with Killbot I did not end up pulling through. I hadn't even fully learnt it when I ended up dropping it but because of some issues with my eyes playing the level was really difficult for me (not impossible or painful, just difficult). I did end up deciding to drop it after spending multiple sessions on just the spider/ball dual alone without gaining an ounce of consistency. The level just felt completely intermountainable to me which was really frustrating given that it wouldn't even be a hardest.
Having dropped that does make feel a bit guilty and I really wanna return to it some day

I think too many people forget gd is just a game. If a level is genuinely causing you terrible mental issues when playing, there should be no shame in dropping it and coming back to it when you’re in a better headspace.

i have 51 on bloodbath, 52 on digital descent, 73 on abp, 61 on dedi, 77 on celestial force, 97 on incipient, 70 on sigma interface (its the easy one), 85 on concaved memories, 53 on mirage, 91 on gang plank hell, significant progress on tenth circle, precipitance, worse trip, shardscapes, mugigae, kuzureta and kowareta
why am i saying this? I think that out of all of these levels, i will only return to like 3. And I don't feel bad about it. Why did I drop them? I dunno, I just didn't want to play them anymore and that is it. For some people (me), it doesn't take much to drop a level, we arent as commited to the grind ig

  • @samuelefront9901

I can't relate to this video because I have a very different way of playing the game. I hate making progress and grinding only one level at a time. I always play 2/3 levels that are hard for me at the same time. When I beat one I immediately start learning a new level even if I haven't beaten the others yet. By doing so I practice different skillsets at the same time since I always choose levels that focus on different gamemods/styles. I keep myself fresh, I practice everything and if I don't feel like playing one level that day I can play a different one and still have fun with the game. For this reason taking breaks for me is not the exception but the rule: I do it all the time. I eventually finish everything, I'm not dropping levels. I just play other stuff for a bit and then come back. It is much more fun for me. I take months for every hard level because I don't play them for weeks but honestly who cares? I certainly don't. I can't imagine playing only one level for months. I would simply stop playing the game entirely. Having a schedule wouldnt work for me since I would still feel forced to play that level that day since my schedule days so. I just open the game and choose which levek I want to do. If i'm not touching something for a month that's fine.

There is only one level I have permanently dropped.
For context, I stopped playing the game from 2018 - 2023. When I came back, I made it a personal mission to beat all of the hard levels that I at the time was intending to beat. With one exception.
Despite getting 70% in the ultimate phase I will never, ever beat the level. It is just not fun in a way that I cannot push through. I can push through zaphkiel, even in its unbalanced state being 6 wave challenges in a trench coat, as learning the wave parts is satisfying, even if frustrating to play as a whole level. But the ultimate phase gives me nothing but bleh.
There are other levels I have stopped playing, levels I have put a lot of time into and gotten pretty good runs, but there is a possibility I at some point come back to those. Not the ultimate phase.

Even tho sometimes I feel like a level is just too hard for me and I can't beat it, I just cannot drop it, cuz I don't want to drop a level I poured thousands of attempts into. lets take for example Zodiac (level Im going for rn). Lenght and balancing of this level makes me wanb to drop it, but I just can't.

I would wonder if your ability to not drop levels partly stems from your playing Geometry Dash as a career.
Sometimes I have to drop levels because I realise the time investment would be too great.
Other times I'll start something and it'll become apparent after a while that beating it isn't feasible yet.
These days though I just try to avoid starting anything difficult.
Maybe if I get a job and have spare time I'll do harder levels again, because there are numerous that would be cool.
Your comment on "how much of the level is left" seems reasonable - Artifice and EXPLICIT are probably about the same difficulty to me, but having a few seconds to go on EXPLICIT was way more motivating than a whole minute left on Artifice (hence dropping Artifice).
