Has to be remembered that soldiering then was far grimmer. Very basic medical facilities, so even a small wound could become infected and fatal. Savage discipline. Pretty much had to carry your gear and rations with you over hundreds of miles. Your best opportunity to win the lottery was taking an enemy city and looting it and enslaving the populace.
Generals had to motivate to the type of men who served in those types of armies. We don't know what Alexander actually said, but I think it might have been a lot cruder than what the poets and writers recorded decades or centuries later. Probably focused more on him being a proven general who had sacked hundreds of cities, India being easy pickings for looting, rather than grand dreams of reaching the world ocean or vague promises of glory. If you're one of his veterans that's what you're interested in - victory and loot.

That's why it's so much more likely that he took his men home through the desert as punishment rather than a mistake on his part. People have their issues with this movie but what I like the most is that it doesn't glorify Alexander as a person.

    • @tylerdurden3722

@@thegreekdeal4747 this speech didn't happen at that river.
It happened two years later in Opis (near Babylon), after they crossed the desert.
But this happened many times before...his men complaining about Alexander's "Asians" an him dressing like them, and using them as advisors and soldiers, etc..on top of wanting to go home...but Alexander always got his way in the end.
Except at the river Hyphasis, things went differently. Alexander first spoke to them...this usually worked, but not this time. Then he went into his tent for 3 days, not eating etc, not wanting to see anyone. This always worked if the first didn't work.
Still his men didn't budge this time.
So, then he decided he would guilt trip them by crossing the river on his own, knowing that his army would follow him.
But just before he could do this, Ptolemy convinced him to decide things with an omen via a sacrifice. Alexander was extremely religious and superstitious. Ptolemy knew this about Alexander. The priest performed the ritual and the omen "he read" said it's bad to cross that river.
Alexander heavy heartedly respected the omen since he was so intensely religious.
His men were overwhelmed with relief. They thanked him profusely for days, bringing gifts to his tent, etc. His later patronized him by thanking him for allowing them (his men) to be the only ones to have ever won against Alexander.
Alexander also only agreed on the condition that they not go back the same way they came. They fought more battles. Alexander ended up conquering 50% more territory on his way back.
Then on their way to Babylon, and advisor told he can't cross a desert because not even Cyrus the Great could do it.
Alexander then meticulously and intentionally split the army in two, send the first half back comfortably on boats. Who were mostly the core and elite units of his army (Macedonians)
And he made the other half go on foot, with him, through the desert. Who were mostly the baggage train (asian wives and children of those on the boat included) and the various asians who became part of his army. By this timez his army had swelled from 40 000 to 100 000 as various asians joined his army (he even had elephants). Where many in the baggage train died crossing that desert.
When he got back, he made this speech in this video, just before the veteran Macedonians were about to go home. Which was aimed at those who travelled there comfortably on the boats...he guilt tripped them by pointing out that Alexander and his Asians walked through the uncrossable desert that not even Cyrus the Great could cross.
And that they can go back home and tell everyone, they abandoned their king in Asia...and Alexander will continue onward, with his "Asians".

4149TOBI Not really, because to be good leader the people have to agree, the people like soldiers, politics, citizens all have to agree with that the leader wants to do, if most do not then it is time to do what they want. It's natural and normal, u can fight when u dont need to, or else ur dying uncessarily. U should only fight for defence/self-defence, in this situation the Macedonians/Greeks knew they did not need to be here, and achieve nothing other then what they already have. Going on with Alexander would be suicide and remembered for someone who tried to conquer world but failed, whereas if they turn back now at least the are allow and can tell tales of what they went though, and hve dignity of knowing when time is up and how its unecessary to go on, knowing world is larger then first though!

What king do you know about that actually fought side to side with his men, there were times he would give his food and drink to his own men, rather them himself if it was all they had left. They were all close knit, and tight like brothers. They all had the same dream of glory and yo conquer. He was right tho, Money, Lust, and all the other thing that destroy a mans pride is what did happen.. If you ask me, there's a reason he was the "Great". A lot of secrets still not revealed.

Many leaders did what Alexander did i.e. food, money, conquer etc Ghenges Khan, Sallahdin, Saxon kings, Roman Emperrors etc but fact is this was the time to go home, the longer they went the more would be killed and no army left, to even defend Macedonian/Greece. Also do not be naive many Greeks and Macedonians never liked Alexander, how many Kings get poisioned or attempted assinations by their own people? the Indians were too powerful and intelligent, because they are more united. Lastly there was no point going on, nothing to gain other then death. I am Greek and half Mecedonian but I am also fair and realistic. Many people today in the world hate Alexander, from Turkey to Pakistan, even many Egyptians. History is written by winners or conquerers, rapists, killers etc rememebr that. Cheerio!

Alexander Medina Hello! You will find several generals and kinds and leaders who did better then Alexander. Did Alexander really spread peace? or did he spread Hellenic civilization? I do not think it was his business to go to other countries, because like many have said other nations did not like him except local leaders who will get more money, protection and gold from Greeks, in order to protect themselves against other local Kings. If he really was liked then why fight so many wars and tribes in all nations? he nearely died in Pakistan, there must have been a reason why the Malli tribe went after him even when he was going back to Babylon. I do not believe he is the main dictator but he is also not the main warrior or conquerer, there were many before him and after him who went further and spread Peace too, this is what we Europeans want to call it-peace, but other people may call it oppression and enforcing Greek culture on others. It is a reason why he did not last long. Reason why he has big legacy is because it was long time ago in a culture that was only known within Persians and few Europeans, also he was young and lots of myths came out of Greece during the time of Alexander, but the more realistic people are getting the more they are realizing it was over hyped and not big as first though,, he was like many other Kings in history. Alexander went a long way, that is the different, the Mongolians also went nearly to England, the empires of Iran, Hungary, English people all also went a long way and spread their way. So let us be objective and open minded here. We have not much information on Alexander other then what is written by his closest people, who are biased, this is true. those days there was not much information on other warriors and kings, this is why Alexander stood out, but after that and discoveries, scientists, archaeologists etc all discovered lots of warriors, kings, legends, myths etc, and better then Alexander. Do not forget he murdered many people too, that is not right, people have a right to defend their homeland, so why murder people of other countries?. The Greeks at the end knew Alexander was a bit crazy so mutineed. If your own army does not trust you and believes they are not doing anything great then it is the right thing to do to listen to your own people, that is democracy. I do agree many of his own generals tried to kill him, yet other leaders not 1 general or citizen disliked their leaders, so really Alexander could not been that all popular. Reason why he was talked about was because at the time like I said there were tales of myths, Gods, Zeus, supersitions etc and Alexander was born into that kind of society, so whatever he did like conquer 1 small weak country it was made out to be he was a God, that is all. Same thing could be said about Moses, Jesus, Muhammad, Julias Ceasar, Isiah, Mongol people, Arab leaders, etc all were great in their own way. Just because Alexander crossed lot of terroritatry does not mean he was the big 1, many people could have conquered other nations but choose to only conquer those who were threat to them, that is how it should be, you do not invade other people, let them sort it out between themselves if there is a problem. The Persian people were more advanced before Greeks, they had civilizations, scientists, medicine, education etc way before Greeks, this is why many Greeks and also Macedonians migrated and fought with Persians, so again let us be on the level here and not dream to much.

After crossing the Indus River, Alexander's advance scouts crossed the Hyphastes and encountered the western flanks of the Nanda Empire. Alexander's forces had already dealt with some of the smaller Indian tribes west of Hyphastes and had even encountered the most feared warrior of ancient battle -- the war elephant. When the advance scouts went back across the Hyphastes and reported to Alexander that the Nanda Empire had over 10,000 battle hardened war elephants waiting for them, Alexander's soldiers refused to march on and thus Alexander returned to Babylon, gazing across the largest empire the world had known up until the Romans. Alexander conquered territory that was nearly as large as the later Roman Empire, and he did in 13 years what took the Romans nearly 150 years to accomplish.

This speech is laden with irony. Alexander chastises his troops for "falling in love with all the things that destroy men", yet is blind to his vainglory. He has conquered all of Persia - the known world is effectively his, and for all that, he still wants more. In a way, it shows how far he's drifted away from reality. I find it suiting how Ptolemy summarizes it so succinctly at the end: "The dreamers exhaust us. They must die before they kill us with their blasted dreams"
All that being said, Craterus' speech is that much more moving and heart-wrenching...

Lieblingsfachful You're taking this movie as 100% historically accurate? Omg... You should find facts elsewhere than from Hollywood movie if you want to start analyzing Alexander the Great's life.
While it is true his ambitions eventually took hold of him and he lost grasp on reality, without people like Alexander the Great the world would be still just a planet of apes. He united people of many different tribes under same banner and conquered most of the known world and beyond in his lifetime - no one else has been ever able to do that - let alone in such short time. If there were no dreamers and visionaries in this world, we would still live in mudhuts if it was up to the "original people".
Alexander the Great has every right to be called Great. Even strategists of today acknowledge his military genius. He also took risks in every battle and was there with his men in the fight, unlike most cowardly kings like Persian king Darius.

Many people will think that Alexander dreamed of wealth and land when he wanted to go further.
He was more than what simple man understood from his actions. He dreamed of the unknown, the things which are beyond. He seek knowledge, differences of the world. He seek things he was told by others, his mentors, and judge them by himself. His desire was never gold or family which made great man die in vain.
He wanted to lift a veil that separated men from each other, and unify east and west. And seek the knowledge of east, by going to the east beyond east. To prove his predecessors wrong. He was great, because his ideal was great. Simple men will not get it.

Exactly. Some people tend to think man of the past were aliens, with no passions like most of us.
It’s known that Alexander since a kid wanted glory, his dream was to be bigger than Achilles, and Achilles was known to be a very proud, vain hero. Alexander wanted that, and didn’t want to stop. The problem is that besides the army being exhausted, they were never going to have share of that glory, they could die and would never see the share of their gold or glory Alexander would have. There is nothing more dangerous than a man with no price, and that was Alexander. Gold was not his juice.

    The music is by Vangelis!
The same man who wrote Chariots of Fire. The same man who wrote the theme of Football World Cup 2000 for Japan. The same man who left his mark in world music.

The problem here is that homosexuals like Michel Focault, who himself was a sodomite and died of aids, read his own homosexual fantasies into the ancient Indo-European concept of a Männerbund and thus defiled the entire Ancient Greek culture with his perverted fantasies. The whole idea of pederasty being something common in Ancient Greece is entirely built on hand-wavy examples and then just by assuming that it was true any close relationship between males is assumed to be of a perverted homosexual nature. For an example Achilles - nowhere in the Iliad are any homosexual tendencies what-so-ever referenced, yet because of Achilles' strong friendship with Patroclus he is somehow pictured as a sodomite by modern degenerates based on their own homoerotic fantasies.
You people want to claim that homosexuality is something that you are born with and that a person cannot change and become straight while at the same time you want to claim that Ancient Greek culture was homosexual and thus made all men into sodomites. Pick one, you can't have both.

Giving them access to more money, power, and alcohol than they ever could have dreamed of. What was supposed to keep them centered? What was supposed to prevent human nature in conditions like? The buck stops with Alexander. It would be like taking 21 year old guy, making him a rock star, giving him unlimited access to women, booze, drugs, and making all his actions consequence free. In fact anyone who gets in your way you can kill them. No harm, no foul. But every time they ask to go home to see their family so they can remember who they really are as a person you tell them no. How is that person to be blamed for their actions and what right does the person enabling it have to complain when the person gets sick of it?

No, I don't mean any disrespect but in realistic terms I don't think you can be celtic græco roman. Maybe your very, very, very distant genetic ancestors were, but you (and nobody, really) aren't nearly similar to them in anything but maybe haplotypes. The language you speak, the food you eat, the lifestyle you live, the spiritual beliefs you hold, the labor you do, the technology you use, the knowledge you have, the way you understand the world, all of this is just too different and disconnected from those of the Celts, the ancient Greeks or the Romans to realistically call yourself one of them. Those civilisations/ethnicities are long gone, they left legacies for sure but no modern people can realistically be considered to currently be any of them. Too much history of migrations, ethnic evolution and change has gone by. We can learn from the history of those very ancient peoples, admire their feats and criticize their failings, maybe even establish some very abstract and general continuities between them and us, but not assume ourselves to be of the same ethnicity as they were.

The speech that Alexander gave at Opis after his army threatened to withdrawl back home was not to implore his men to continue but to make them recognize what they had accomplished. After conquering the Persian Empire he lamented that his men would not continue as soldiers of Greece and after the great victories they had won. He spoke to them as fellow soldiers, that it was "they" as a collective won those battles not just Alexander. He was willing to let them go where they wished, but reminded them of who it was who led them and gave them the opportunity to gain the honor, glory and wealth that had been achieved in Eurasia.

10/10 Leader right there. No wonder those men worshipped and later deified him as a God. And back in the day without Computers or Internet. Man truly was divine and ahead of the curve.
