Emily and Ed have even said how much Rex has improved over the time they've had her, more than they thought possible. No, she'll never be a normal sized or shaped gator, but she's improved enough to be able to enjoy catching fish in her pool, and living a much better life, mentally and physically.
It so nice to see how much of an improvement Rex has made in the few years you guys have had her. She is so much bigger and her snout is a lot straighter than it used to be. I know she will never be the size she is meant to be, but it's still great being able to see the improvements she's made being in your care.

I was outside getting ready to go when a man and his son called to me from their golf cart. They said that there was a snake in the middle of the street, and maybe they ran over it... I rushed down after they drove away, expecting to find a basking garter snake... instead I saw a very confused copperhead. I’m so glad they told me instead of picking it up... they would’ve been bitten for sure... just something cool... it was a beautiful snake... wish it was a garter though, so I could’ve moved it out of the street... (they didn’t run over it, it was just fine)

I recently came across an injured garter snake (Got caught by a cat I know). He's still young, very long slender tail, but has a few puncture wounds on his back/sides. I'm going to get some betadine and use it like you guys did with that female hognose. My plan was to let him go as soon as he was healed, but I've been holding him every day to check up on him, and I set him down to watch him slither, and it looks like his whole back half is paralyzed. I've seen normal healthy garters move, and there's definitely some thing amiss with this poor guy. His back half just stays how it is until it ends up getting dragged by the rest of him. He has to pull himself along with these weird half lurching motions, and he's really slow because of it. He can't wrap his tail around things, and when he starts to go somewhere from a coil, his back half stays coiled up, again, until it gets dragged on. I'm afraid if I let him go again once his wounds are healed, he'll just get caught again and be killed anyway. I really don't want that to happen. I have a big enough enclosure for him, and I can get extra lights, heat, hides, etc. Honestly, I'm already buying mice for one snake, what's one more? What do you all think of this? Even if Snake Discovery themselves don't reply, I'm sure some of you in the comments could give your opinions.
Considering that you didn't go searching for him with the expectation of bringing home a wild caught snake, and that he's guaranteed to die quickly on his own, I think it's totally fine for you to hang onto him much like Emily had with Nick. (RIP.) You've clearly thought about what you would need to do to adjust, and you've got the necessary resources, so I say go for it! I hope the little fella heals up and can eat, and I hope he's able to enjoy a long, happy life with you.
I'm guessing it would be a good idea to take it to a vet if possible just to make sure you're doing everything you can for it and also so you know if it has anything that could be passed to your other snake. That's what I would do but I've never rescued a snake so idk.
I see nothing wrong with you holding on to him permanently from what you've described. Vet visit might be good for at least sending off a fecal sample, but I'd also be interested in radiographs to look at the spine (to confirm diagnoses, but probably won't change much on how you're caring for him). My big concern with the back end deficits is: can he defecate? A snake that can't poop is going to have a hard time even with a proper enclosure and care.
Imagine being like a new neighbor and seeing your neighbor take out a kiddie pool and you're just like oh? They have a child or a dog? No. They have an alligator.

I recently came across an injured garter snake (Got caught by a cat I know). He's still young, very long slender tail, but has a few puncture wounds on his back/sides. I'm going to get some betadine and use it like you guys did with that female hognose. My plan was to let him go as soon as he was healed, but I've been holding him every day to check up on him, and I set him down to watch him slither, and it looks like his whole back half is paralyzed. I've seen normal healthy garters move, and there's definitely some thing amiss with this poor guy. His back half just stays how it is until it ends up getting dragged by the rest of him. He has to pull himself along with these weird half lurching motions, and he's really slow because of it. He can't wrap his tail around things, and when he starts to go somewhere from a coil, his back half stays coiled up, again, until it gets dragged on. I'm afraid if I let him go again once his wounds are healed, he'll just get caught again and be killed anyway. I really don't want that to happen. I have a big enough enclosure for him, and I can get extra lights, heat, hides, etc. Honestly, I'm already buying mice for one snake, what's one more? What do you all think of this? Even if Snake Discovery themselves don't reply, I'm sure some of you in the comments could give your opinions.
Considering that you didn't go searching for him with the expectation of bringing home a wild caught snake, and that he's guaranteed to die quickly on his own, I think it's totally fine for you to hang onto him much like Emily had with Nick. (RIP.) You've clearly thought about what you would need to do to adjust, and you've got the necessary resources, so I say go for it! I hope the little fella heals up and can eat, and I hope he's able to enjoy a long, happy life with you.
I'm guessing it would be a good idea to take it to a vet if possible just to make sure you're doing everything you can for it and also so you know if it has anything that could be passed to your other snake. That's what I would do but I've never rescued a snake so idk.
I see nothing wrong with you holding on to him permanently from what you've described. Vet visit might be good for at least sending off a fecal sample, but I'd also be interested in radiographs to look at the spine (to confirm diagnoses, but probably won't change much on how you're caring for him). My big concern with the back end deficits is: can he defecate? A snake that can't poop is going to have a hard time even with a proper enclosure and care.
I love what you're doing! No doubt he will die quickly in the wild. As long as the snake is happy and healthy I think you should keep him!
