And here is my tip: - use rectangle as new layer - set fill to gradient -- set start and end point to black (important!) -- set type from Linear to Elliptical -- set start or end point opacity to 0% (use Reverse gradient if need) - change to Gradient Tool and set position and Mid Point I use these steps for gradients, because can modify gradient of rectangle anytime.
Another method that I've been using and working really well if you want to try it. Use the circle/elliptic tool and make a shape over the focal point of the photo. Next in the layer panel press control and click the shape to make it a selection. Invert the selection and turn off the shape layer. Make a new pixel layer and now you can fill the section with a solid color or gradient. Finally apply a gaussian blur to that layer of 200-600 pxl. Makes a nice shadow and its movable

One question, at 4:00 when you use the brush over the mask layer, it sounded a bit overcomplicated to me since I use the eraser tool to get rid of part of the fill layer. Is there any difference between the two methods?
The eraser is simpler to use, but masks are a good habit to get into. Unlike the eraser, you can undo your mask at any time by painting in white to re-reveal the areas you've hidden. 😊

Ally -- I have been chatting with Ezra in email mentioning about Luminar 4 with Ai. It also has a vignette method which does allow for a couple of things that you will like. One is an ability to set the centre. Two is the ability to increase light at the centre. Unfortunately, many poor vignettes often are the user creating either or both something too dark, to tight to the centre of interest or not feathered sufficiently. For over a century photographers have used the vignette to draw the eye of the beholder to the location where the photographer wished point the attention. Oh, BTW, I believe that Luminar 4 can be obtained as a plug-in for AP and of course as a stand alone product. One drawback for PC users is that some things that work on a MAC will not work on a PC but we can all hope that this will be fixed sometime -- not holding breath though as it has been asked for over the past few years. Oh also, L4 would have helped with the image here by using the Sky Replacement filter and also additional editing would have created an image that would have allowed for an easy Live Filter vignette to have been used. Vignette is the last thing to do prior to adding a signature (one thing that can't be done with L4 so either use L4 as plug-in or export to .jpg and then open in AP and add signature etc. -- I like Stand Alone so would use the latter method).

I use AP but also have Luminar 2018 and L3 but have not purchased L4 yet as I want them to update the Windows O/S to be equal to the MAC platform. Yes, the iPad also has blend ranges. Open the Layers Studio, press on the 3 circles at the top left, and then you'll find blend ranges at the bottom of the window.

Love Affinity, I’ve used NIK filters for all my B/W conversions also NIK has a sweet adjustable vignette setup, shape, center, everything including whites. Together I will forget Adobe forever

Hello everyone. I realize that in principle you do not have to apply a mask to a filllayer. If you just go over the filllayer with the brush tool you get the same effect. The question is, does this make any difference or should I always use a filler?
Another great video, thanks! The “highlight protection mask” is excellent, thx. Affinity really do need to add a “centre of vignette” pointer option, like they have in Nik effects!! Talking of which, would you know what plug-ins work with Affinity please?
Great tutorial. As it goes to the Affinity Photo itself - its Vignette filter is weak and using your other technique makes it search for or even create your won brushes. GIMP, even though is a free software, provides way better Vignette tool/filter, but then again - who wants to use ten different programs to edit a single photo? ;P It's one of the tools/filters I wish Affinity will improve in their future Photo releases :)

I’m trying to apply a vignette to a square image in Designer and it seems it doesn’t work as well as in Affinity Photo.. when I apply a Gaussian blur to soften the edges, the corners of my image become apparent (without the vignette again). I’m also trying to move the center point around. I also tried the erase blending mode you showed in another video but then same story when I apply a Gaussian blue effect. 🙃🙃
Vignette? So what? Black Rectangle - nothing new! Mask with Soft Brush - nothing new! Blend Ranges - nothing new! But ------------------ this combination to this aim would have swept me right off my feet - if I hadn't happen to have my buttocks firmly clamped into my rather narrow office swivel chair! A really nice subtle type of vignette. Full marks!
