In this Affinity Photo tutorial, we learn the BEST way to color correct skin. We're going to use the Free Hand Selection Tool, Average Blur, skin tone palettes, the Info panel, and the picker function of Curves.
That might seem like a lot, but I promise you, even a beginner can follow along with this color correction tutorial. Soon you'll have perfect color casts in all your pictures, and be editing portraits like a professional. :)
If you want the color correction to ONLY be applied to the skin (and not to the rest of the photo), here's what you should do.
1. Follow the steps in this video to set up your color-correcting-curves adjustment layer.
2. Invert the curves adjustment layer.
3. Paint in white on the adjustment layer's mask to reveal the color correction on just the areas you paint.
Have fun!
Affinity Revolution thanks. I was about to ask about this
can you please explain me this.... I realy don't know how to get this wright
Is the inverting before or after you do the actual colour correcting via the info panel?
@@dt..retired8462 After. Inverting + painting is your final step. :)
Affinity Revolution Got it! Its amazing that only 3 weeks ago I couldn’t even follow the first few minutes of this tutorial. Now, after working my way through many of your excellent tutorials, I’m following it with no difficulty! Thanks Ezra and Ally..brilliant tutors.
WOOOOOOOOOW... This was the first channel I found when I was learning AP and till this day you still continue to teach me new stuff every single time. Thank you for the time and effort you put into these videos. Hope Ezra and the family are ok.
Thank you! I'm glad you liked the video. 😊
That is so CLEVER! Thank you!
Thank you! :)
I can’t express how grateful I am for your Affinity tutorials. Thanks.
Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying our tutorials. 😊
This is exactly how tutorials should be taught. This is the best tutorial channel for Affinity Photo on UA-cam.
Wow, thank you so much! 😊
INCREDIBLY helpful, useful, and informative! Best example of the power of the curves adjustment I've seen in ANY video on Affinity Photo!
Thank you! :)
I am more and more amazed by this product. Glad I bought it recently.
It's an amazing piece of software! 😊
This is one of the most useful tutorials yet, at least for me. Fixing skin tones has been a great source of frustration for me, but with this info, I don't think I'll be nearly as troubled now. Thanks!
Thank you! I'm glad you liked the video! :-)
Excellent excellent video. This was very helpful. I am always surprised by how powerful this program is. Thank you so much.
Thank you! Glad you liked the technique. 😊
I would suggest to apply a black mask to the curves adjustment and then use white brush to uncover the curves adjustment just on the skin as not to affect the colours of hairs lips and environment.
I so need to see this in a tutorial
Good tip. If just the skin needs correction, and not the rest of the photo, that's exactly what I would do too.
Another awesome video. Thank you so much
Thank YOU! 🙂
Why am I just seeing this? Pretty interesting technique and will definitely play around this weekend.
Glad you liked the video! It's an old tutorial, but the technique still works great. 😊
What a simple, clear and easy step by step color correction skin on a tutorial. thanks a lot!
Thank you! 😊
You definitely received a subscribe here. You when deep into the color correcting and with some of the best explanations I've seen.
Thank you so much! 😊
Thank you, this is brilliant. Perfectly explained, too.
Thank you Patrick! :)
This is just what I was looking for. Great job. Thanks.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching. 😊
Wow cool tip. Is this also possible with the iPad Version? I don’t founf the Option to adjust the curves to exactly Numbers.
The iPad does not have the Info panel, so this particular technique only works on the Mac/PC.
Wonderful just gets better. As a newbie to affinity Photo, I am discovering how powerful it.
Thanks for watching! 😊
Thanks for these unbelievable Trick. Your voice is very clear and quit....very good to understand just like your video execution.
Thank you! I'm glad you liked the video. 😊
I imagine this is not possible in iPad version, isn’t it? Thank you for your video, real gems!
Unfortunately, you are correct. The iPad app is missing the Info Panel.
Wow ! Super video. I’ve just learnt so much. Thank you Ally.
Thank you Mark! Glad you liked it. 😊
After researching a few photo editing programs I’m going to get Affinity Photo (in part because of your tutorials, and I definitely don’t want to pay a monthly fee), my question is if I can buy it through you channel so that you get a commission (I’m sure it’s not very big LOL)
Thank you! But no, I don't get any commissions from them. I earn money by selling Affinity guides on my website, not when people buy the app. Thanks for thinking of me though! 😁
The tutorials are highly recommended from the Affinity Revolution website. I have used them to become VERY familiar with Affinity Photo when I first began.
@@gr8moblaze553 Thank you.
@@AffinityRevolution Ok, I just purchased Affinity Photo and it works great (even if I don’t know how to use it yet LOL), honestly it looks much better than I expected for $39.00
Now I want to buy your course but I’m not sure how it works, is it a "real" book, does it install on my computer or is it web based. (sorry to be a pain).
Wow.... that is so cool!!! One of those moments where I just grin admirably at a beautiful piece of intelligence. I'll certainly be using this technique. Thank you so much
Thank you David! 😊
Awesome tutorial!! Thanks
Thank you Manolo! 😊
Great video. Thank you for your time. I just purchased this program and I am loving it!
Awesome! I hope you love Affinity! 😄
What a nice trick to color correct skin tone!
Thank you Jay! 😊
wow. That's the most sophisticated thing I have ever done in photo editing! :)
Ya, this is definitely one my more advanced tutorials. :)
This tutorial has helped me more than you will ever know! Thank you so very much.
Yay! Thank you! 😊
Wow! That’s incredible! I love your approach!
Thank you! 😊
Love everything about your video! Very informative, easy to understand and follow, and a truly great approach to editing skin tone! Thank you!
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it. :)
hey Affinity Revolution crew! Thank you so much for such an educational video! I've just become a fan of your work!!! It would be interesting to see if you guys could show us an easy technique to colour correct film photos whose negatives have just been photographed against regular day-light using a macro lens and then brought into affinity as regular raw files. They normally have a strong orange cast and even after inverting them most of their colours still look pretty off and dull. Anyone has any ideas? :)
I have't worked with photo negatives before, but I show how to use advanced color correction techniques in my Retouching 301 course. 😊
courses.affinityrevolution.com/p/retouching-301
I can use this method for lots of combining picture and colours. Thanks!!
That's great! 😊
Great tutorial.Made it so simple...
Glad you liked it! 😊
Awesome! Thanks for the great video, I am just starting to switch to AP from Photoshop and you are helping a ton!
Good luck! It's worth taking the time to transfer to Affinity, so you can stop paying that subscription once and for all! 😊
Amazing and so cool... Thanks a lot
You're welcome! Glad you liked it. 😊
Thanks, nice work 👍
Thank you Hussain! 😊
Thank you so much for this video! It was super simple and easy to follow!
Thank you! 🤗
You guys are the BEST instructional videos out there.
Does this work the same on an iPad Pro?
Thank you! :-)
Unfortunately, this exact technique doesn't work on the iPad, because it's missing the Info panel.
Great question. I use the iPad also. Maybe one day we’ll have the panel also.
This was fantastic!!
Thank you so very much! ❤️
Thank you! 😊
Very nice, thank you. Hope you get better soon.
Thank you Mike! 🙂
Great tutorial. Very helpful and easy to understand.
Thank you! 😊
WOW Great Tutorial. 👍🏾
Thank you! Glad you liked it. 😊
Just wanted to say Thank you for this technique. I've used it to match skin tones from two different pics, first getting the average colors from both pics, then using the Info, and Curves to match them. The only difficulty I've encountered is in trying to match the color data without crushing the curves. I assume that when this happens, the two colors are just too out of range to meet. Anyway, thanks again for this video.
Ya, that is a problem you can run into. My recommendation is to keep the curves just barely above getting crushed. I'm glad you're finding the technique to be useful! 😊
Wow you are amazing thanks alot!!!!!
You're welcome! Glad you liked the video. 😊
Wow! Perfect!
Thank you! 😊
Very helpful, thank you. This has reminded me of a problem I see often - because of cosmetics the model's skin tone on her face & neck is very different to her shoulders & arms, perhaps you can produce a tutorial on how to solve?
You could use the same technique as shown in this video, but mask it to just her face or arms as needed. 🙂
Another great tutorial! I love the intro music. Ethan Newberry (Ginger Runner) is amazing.
Thank you! 😄
Thank you so much, very smart method to colour correct an image.
Thank you! :-)
thanks a lot for this technic
You're welcome! Thanks for watching. 😊
Hey Guys, I love your videos and tutorials! They are awesome 👍. I have a short question. From now on I only use affinity photo for the iPad. Where is the info panel hidden? Or is it only possible on the desktop version? How can I fix it to use your good technique? Thanks for your request an have a beautiful Sunday.
Sorry, the iPad version doesn't have the info panel. I hope they have that feature in an update soon.
Here is a verry similar approach that works on Affinity Photo for iPad: ua-cam.com/video/FgXkRJj8xP0/v-deo.html
Fantastic, clear tutorial.
Thank you! 😊
Awesome video
Thank you! 🙂
Ezra you did a great job and explanations are wonderful. Love your videos. However I had two people in a picture and hoping skin color of each would be the same and they did not match in color.
Can you make a video showing how to do this??
You can use the technique shown in this video, but you will need to make two Curves Adjustments, and then mask each adjustment of to the person you are color correcting.
@@AffinityRevolution Thank you for the reply and seems like I have to see someone do it for it to ever work for me. Hope you can do a video on it.
You guys are awesome!
Thank you! 😊
Excelente video muy bien explicado muy didactica, gracias por compartir
Gracias! 😊
Enrolled!!
Thank you! 😄
Amazing tuts! 😍
Thank you Mary! 😊
Fantastic. thanks
Thank you! 😊
Just learned more in this video than in 15 years working randomly
Thank you so much! 😊
This is a master class. Thank you!
Thank you! Glad you liked the video. 😊
Very useful tutorial, thank you very much!
Thank you! :-)
Another great video - thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Great Tutorial! Keep up your good work and thank you!
Thank you! 😊
Wow so easy. Thank you!
You’re welcome 😊
I have a question: I follow your instructions which are great!! But.... not only the color of the skin is changing, but the whole photo. What am I missing?
You need to invert the adjustment layer (Ctrl I), and then paint in white with the paint brush over the areas you want the adjustment applied. 😊
Thank you. Great tutorials. Is it possible to take a sample from a photo and use it to correct colours on another photo?
The reason I ask is because sometimes camera settings are wrong and you have a photo from someone who would like you to edit. You may have another photo with the correct skin tones and want to use that one.
This video might be able to help you. :)

Thank you for such a speedy response. It is good to know you do read the comments. I really like your tutorials, from which I have learnt so much. Unfortunately this method never worked for me. I have a few very bright photos to edit which have been taken on high ISOs. I have tried a few different tricks but just cannot correct the skin tones. It may not be possible to edit them correctly with Affinity or any other software.
Thank you. this is a great lesson to know.
Thank you! I'm glad you liked the video. 😊
Thank you !! Amazing tutorials
Thank you Elly! 😊
Does this work on iPad as well? I can’t find the color info picker.
The iPad version is missing the info panel, sorry. 😕
this is really awesome. thank you.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching. 😊
How can I do this in Affinity photo 2. The studio tool is not present in the same location, and the window path to studio gives different options. This looks like a great technique
Under the Window menu, there are all of the panels, including the Info Panel. 😊
@@AffinityRevolution thanks. I found it?
Can you re-create this technique using the iPad version of AP? 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
The iPad version doesn't have the Info Panel. Sorry!
When I use average blur the swatch becomes transparent unlike yours which is opaque and gives strange results. I have a similar problem with another of your videos which I tried and which uses the average blur. Any suggestions? You both provide great videos and have been a fan for a number of years.
Sorry, I'm not sure why that's happening. I recommend you post your question (with a screenshot) on the official Affinity forums. I bet someone there knows what's going on!

@@AffinityRevolution. I did as you suggested and got a reply almost immediately. I inadvertently had the feather too high. Once I set it to zero the problem was solved. Thanks for your help
Love to see this in the iPad version, because I have no computer. Great tutorial though.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
The iPad version doesn't have the Info Panel, which you need for this technique. Sorry! 😬
@@AffinityRevolution any work arounds?
Brilliant tutorial thank you !
Thank you! 😊
Any plans on adding the Info Panel to the iPad version? How can we color correct skin tone on iPad without this panel?
I don't make Affinity Photo (I just make tutorials for it). You can post your suggestion on the official Affinity forums: forum.affinity.serif.com/
ua-cam.com/video/FgXkRJj8xP0/v-deo.html
It is an interesting way to correct but this affects the color of the whole image not only for the skin, this means extra work to change the color of the background, clothes, hair and so on :)
Normally if a photo need to be color corrected, the whole photo will need it. But if you only want to affect the skin, you can just mask the color correction adjustments onto the skin. 🙂
So awesome! I’m about to make the jump from PS to Affinity! Curious if these same techniques can be make in the iPad?
This technique does not work on the iPad, since it doesn't have the Info Panel. Hopefully they add that feature soon! 😊
Check this variation of this technique that works on iPad as well: ua-cam.com/video/FgXkRJj8xP0/v-deo.html
For some reason my color sampling isn't working. I click on the crosshair (sample from location) and it stays fixed at a color. The other crosshair goes to the exact same color and doesn't change no matter where I click?
Hmmm... Sorry, I'm not sure why that is. I'd post your question with a screenshot on the official Affinity forums: forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/5-affinity-on-desktop-questions-mac-and-windows/
Brillant !!!
Thank you! 😊
I try to use that rope option but it won't allow me to do anything than to grab the entire picture. When I click on the rope all I get is a hand that's ready to grab. Help please =)
It's hard me to see what's going on without seeing your screen. I would post your question (with a screenshot) on the Affinity forums. 😊 forum.affinity.serif.com/
are those shortcut keys somewhere in the menus too? I have a hard time remembering them
Yes, you can find all the same tools in the menu. I'm just the opposite of you: I can never remember where things are in the menu!
@@AffinityRevolution thanks! I found a shotrcut list on the web. I like using the menus as it helps me learn the shortcuts (and how they are grouped) and then eventually stop using the menus. great tutorial video, btw!
all good until 11:40 - did it exactly the same, but the values are NOT showing in the info panel. so I have no way to know how to match the colours. help anyone?
Hmmm... it's hard to know what's going wrong without being able to see your screen. I'd post your question with a screenshot on the Affinity forums: forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/5-affinity-on-desktop-questions-mac-and-windows/

Wow! Extremely helpful😃!
Thank you! :)
Terrific, thanks!
Thank you Bill!
Very good! Thank you!
You're welcome! :)
What if the there are different spots of colours on the skin
You can mask the curves adjustment to a particular area, and then mask a 2nd curves adjustment onto another area. 😊
Thanks ever so much ;)
You're welcome! Glad you liked the video. 😊
very useful, thank you!
Thank you! 🙂
fantasssstic! Much easier for me than Photoshop
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it! 😊
С удовольствием смотрю ваши уроки,спасибо вам.
Спасибо! 😊
so is this reverse color grading? Yes, the result looks great, but the starting image was clearly intended to be that blueish color... or am I mistaken?
Yes, this is similar to color grading. But usually color grading is done to add an "Artistic flare" to an image, while color correction is intended to bring the colors back to what they are "supposed to be" in reality.
Will Affinity Photo able to create animation like Photoshop does?
Maybe someday, but I don't think that feature will be added anytime soon.
This is Epic! Top class!
Thank you! 🤗
Very cool video! I've got a question, so should we avoid doing the curve adjustment just on her skin and not on everything?
It depends on if the whole photo needs color correction, or just the skin. In this case, I color corrected the entire photo, but you could mask the adjustment to just the skin if needed. 😊
@@AffinityRevolution Thank you a lot for your time and dedication. I also checked up your free course by now and it's very good!
@@AffinityRevolution I've got a bit of a problem and I'm not sure if you can help me but I'll try.
I've edited a picture for a dear friend of mine, the picture looks fine and I like it on my monitor. The problem is, once it's exported and watched on a phone, the colours are way stronger, more contrast, and generally a different white balance. Is my Monitor completely off calibrated? Phone with vivid colours? It would be interesting to know how to mitigate this effect somehow
Hey love the video, thanks!! Could your next video be about how to shape a clout into any shape!!!!!! Please

Question. If you have multiple photos all shot under the same light, can you copy the formula to other photos?
Yes, you could copy the curves adjustment layer you made, and then paste it into other photos that you have opened inside Affinity.
