Who's container ship? They should be paying for bridge and every expense that has to do with this not taxpayer money.
They should definitely pay for it. However the government is going to just pay to get things back to normal as fast as possible. Then send the bill to whoever is to blame. Waiting for insurance companies would probably add years to the process.

No tax payers are not going to pay. You don’t know economics. When a structure is money producing, ad valorem taxes can’t be used. That bridge is a toll bridge. So it generates money. Any thing that generates money, tax payers can’t foot the bill. Only non income producing structures is ad valorem taxes ( property tax) like schools, roads, and libraries etc.
The Government will pay because it's got the money to replace the bridge quickly, but be in no doubt that they will be recovering from the shipping company every penny of the costs.
Would you rather have no bridges or roads or fire departments

Bridges nationwide are outdated because every president says they're going to invest in infrastructure, but they never do. President Biden passed the biggest infrastructure bill in history and he did it within his first year in office. He also passed two other major bills within the first two years... a feat no other president has ever done. AND he accomplished all that despite taking office during covid which trump failed at handling bigtime! During his first two years there was a major hurricaine in Florida, the biggest tornado in history that wiped out towns in two states, then putin invaded Ukraine, then the fire happened in Hawaii, then the train derailment.... and while one catastrophe after another was happening, he managed to pass the CHIPS Act and the PACT Act and also attract billions of investment dollars from countries who want to start buying manufactured goods from us instead of China.
What did trump do for the country during his 4 years in office? The side by side comparison between these two shows that old man Biden is dedicated to working for the American people and gets things accomplished.... trump cut billionaires taxes, did some things in the Arab nations that benefitted them, and golfed.
I vote for candidates that fulfill their promises and get great things done for me and for my country.

I think they can open a ferry, for temporary way to cross the river. The bridge can be rebuilt in a expedited way. I am sad, but, at the same time thankful that it was late at night,cans not much traffic. It was catastrophic that this happened.
