- DRIVE YOUR OWN CAR TO COSTA RICA, here's how! This video details the Costa Rica Temporary Import Permit (TIP) process as well as how to STORE YOUR VEHICLE for longer stays/travel. We drove our car (SUV & rooftop tent) from Canada to Costa Rica and are travelling in Costa Rica for 8 months. We have completed the TIP process TWICE and we stored our vehicle in Costa Rica for 3 months so we could extend our stay.

We are car camping/overlanding in our ROOF TOP TENT through Central America. We drove all the way from Canada to Nicaragua with our 2 bulldogs Tigger & Penelope to our new home in San Juan del Sur Nicaragua. We loved it so much that we are back on the road!!! Storing our SUV for 3 months was an easy process, a little nerve racking leaving our rooftop tent and all our camping gear...but it was safe and secure and no problems.
We found 90 days in Costa Rica was not enough time to see all the locations we wanted to see. Storing the vehicle or traveling to Panama for 90 days and then getting a new TIP was a great option.

It cost $300USD to store the vehicle for 3 months.
How much $$are the apartments there?
There is such a range in Costa Rica. You will pay more in San Jose and the more popular beach towns. In San Jose you could be in a very small apartment in a local neighborhood with no air conditioning for $500 or less (depending on the place) or in a newer high rise luxury building with a/c, a pool, gym, laundry, 24/7 security for $1500 plus. We rented a one bedroom in a new building in San Jose and paid $1400 USD a month. There is an apartment tour on our channel.
I don't understand why you need to store the vehicle?
In Costa Rica you can only drive a foreign vehicle for 3 month, then the vehicle must leave the country for at least 3 months. Alternatively you can store your vehicle in a government facility for 3 months (or more) instead of leaving the country. After 3 months out of country (or in storage) you can get a new temporary vehicle import permit to drive another 3 months. We had to store our vehicle because at the time we could not drive our vehicle to Nicaragua because they had a ban on dogs entering and we are traveling with our 2 dogs. We didn't want to go to Panama so we opted to stay in Costa Rica. People will also store there vehicle to break up there trip, say travel in Central America for a few months, store the vehicle, go home and work and then fly back, pick up their vehicle and travel a few more months.
I want to drive my motorcycle to Costa Rica, did you guys drive from Canada or did you ship 🛳️ it to a port and then pick it up and drive in?

Just out of curiosity ... did your Air B&B not have parking facilities in the building included with the rate ??? Is the storage facility a Government facility ???
The air B and B did have available parking but we had to either store our vehicle in a government bonded storage facility for 3 months or it have to leave Costa Rica for 3 months. foreign vehicles are only permitted in Costa Rica for 3 consecutive months and then must exit for 3 month (or be stored) and then can return for 3 more months (6 months in a year but not consecutive).
@@ChrisTovahsAmazingAdventures thanks for the answer, quick follow up: was the 3 months because the car permit is/was tethered to the (former) 90 days standard tourist visa? would you happen to know if what was 3 months has now changed to 6 months because of the new 180 days standard tourist visa ?

It cost us $100 per month to store our SUV.
So why did you have to store your car?
We had to store our car because we had already been in Costa Rica for 3 months/90 days. After that your vehicle has to leave the country for at least 3 months, or you can store your vehicle in Costa Rica for 3 months while you enjoy another 3 months in the country (but without your vehicle).

Hi. What about if I have purchased land in Costa Rica, parked my RV on it and dont want to drive it around ever anymore. Can i do that without any hassle about importing it?
Great question, we honestly don't know the answer to that. You should chat with the lawyer that you use to purchase land, they should be able to find out.
