This is why artists need to learn about engineering to some degree. You need to have control of what you sound like. If you don't know whatchu want then you can't expect an engineer to.
Idk if you'll ever read this comment but do you have some suggestions on how I can educate myself? I'm in that situation currently I can hear how I want to sound but don't know how to communicate that.

Faylsafe Jaxson The one thing I always tell artists is to experiment by writing and recording verses you have no intention making an official release. If you treat it more like practice and experimentation you’ll take the pressure off of it having to be “right” and the result will be you simply learning more about your voice.
Great visuals, nice and clean. Maybe work on redrafting your script one more time to really trim it down, I noticed some repetition. Otherwise really promising work, subscribed
Forreal. One of the reasons it stands out is absolutely just as much due to the mixing as the effects used. They are just meticulously applied. The key separating factor is how tediously everything is brought together between recording, effects and mixing. Kendrick is also a master of manipulating his voice on his own, and has been since the beginning.
As a wannabe rapper, this video is insanely awesome and helpful. So many ideas and paths have opened thanks to this video. You deserve more recognition.
This is dope. Bear in mind that it's more than just the way his vocals are mixed. It starts at the recording process. Kendrick is one of the best in the game when it comes to manipulating his voice to achieve different effects and create different feels. He has so many "different voices". His delivery is really immaculate in that sense
Im surprised you didn’t mention the cult classic “Cartoons & Cereal” which gave me the most goosebumps when I first heard the hook. Made it seem twisted and demented; the influence of an adult world pouring into the innocent child’s life.
I think how they achieve the pitching effect is by shifting formants, since just by pitching it down makes the voice sound muffled or pitching it up makes it sound chipmunk-y. Awesome content btw.
Vocals in Hip Hop might be more important than lyrics when rapping. U can be a lyrical genius but ur voice sucks. Ur flow can be great but your voice sucks. That's Y i needed to work on my voice. Many people told me my voice was different and I needed that different to sand out rather than just sound like a school guy talking
Shockheadd45 It's not about concious raps. I was talking about what you do for Hip Hop om the track. Not your rapping. What you to make music. Your flows and the type of voice.
Тигран Закарян haha true, i mean if you look up the Wikipedia article for Double Tracking, the only artist mentioned is The Beatles so hard to debate I guess lmao
kendricks music is out of this world and i always come back listening to his albums. timeless artist. i know for a fact i will listen to his music in 2069
Great video. The only thing I would add is that many of the songs shown here, he had quite a budget for given his label backing. Anything before Good Kid Maad City I could see them have limited resources but that album the production and mixing quality is fire! It must have cost a fortune.
holy shit I've noticed it in songs but never consciously. Like I registered the difference but never noticed it was playing a set of vocal instead of just one
I think a kenny beats denzel one would be cool just because of all the weird vocal effects also. Plus the drop out and switch ups in kenny production is super interesting
2:42 into my first viewing of your content and I’ve already subscribed. Excellent analytics, presentation, edit and depth. Fantastic work brother, looking forward to watching more of your channel today.
Thanks for the video. Interesting topic you've touched on. I think something missing from this is Kendrick's known influences that likely contributed to his creative approach. The lower pitched voice of authority (among other things) Kendrick uses in his skits on Section 8.0 are definitely a shout to Tupac's use of the same technique on several songs including Soulja's Story, Souljah's Revenge and, most notably, the interlude on Where Do We Go From Here. The higher pitched voice of reason on Swimming Pools was likely picked from the Outkast movie Idlewild - Big Boi's rooster. Also, when you mentioned the vocal doubling, I was hoping you'd speak of one of the most memorable uses of that effect - Bizzy Bone's verse in Notorious Thugs. Vocal doubling had been a common technique in rap from way back (can't think of a Pac verse without it) but it was strongly felt with Bone Thugs probably because they rap so fast it's difficult to perfectly align them like Em does. Btw, Em goes to great lengths to ensure the vocals are a near perfect match. Great content nonetheless👌 Thanks for the work.
Should have given a nod to The Beatles and the engineers at Abbey Road Studios for inventing the whole idea of double-tracking to be fair just to honor the history of it. They used it prolifically
Wow, truly great content. You remind me of What I've Learned only for music production. Keep up the great work, you definitely deserve more recognition!
i cant say u did something wrong because its just a video what the title says. but i really expected some more, maybe something not everyone knows by just listening to the song. its all so obvious and stuff like doubled vocals are so common in every genre its nothing special. and he adds harmony in the doubled takes, wow. dont get me wrong, i appreciate kendricks music and it really is special in total, but i dont get how his vocal effects are unique or special. it all is kinda common.
Really great stuff, looking forward to see what you do as your channel grows!
oh shit thanks, your videos are pretty much the only thing I have to go off of.

I needed this, been studying this guy for a while.
wish he would do more of his agressive voice like on blacker the berry
Yeah but its rarity makes it stand out, so when he does get like that you know hes got sum shit to say
@@rileymagee4645 doesn't he go pretty hard on DNA?

you should do a brock hampton vocal effects

All I hear is doubling low parts with high parts and just a lot of different voices...
Waves Doubler...MicroPitch Shift with a bunch of layers.
Didn’t know about doubling, this is a dope video
This channel deserves more subscribers, the research and editing is too proper, the visuals and the audio goes well together
These are all basic techniques that a lot of established producers/rappers use. Layering vocals, pitching up/down, and panning.

Vocal effects are such a huge part of what makes Travis Scott so popular as well. Maybe more than any other artist I can think of.

Greatest rapper of all time, tpab is top 5 greatest album of all time.
One of the simplest but most effective effects in my opinion would be the fade out in the second verse of Sing About Me.
TLDR: use different voicings, harmonies, and auto tune can be used pitch things up/down
I usually just fool around n rap/record...but damn...no wonder why I hated my voice 🤣.
Doubling your vocals isn't anything new. Tupac was doing this back in the 90s lol...
And John Lennon before him in the 70s. No one said is was anything new

Travis Scott Vocal effects would be interesting. Yes I know a lot of delay and reverb plus autotune but there is a lot more to it,
7.5 minutes to tell you he uses vocal doubling, pitch changing, panning/stereo imaging to add some pizzazz to his vocals.
